People who drink two to three glasses of wine a day may be prescribed with a pill to help them cut back on their alcohol intake.

According to reports this week, Britain’s NHS are urging doctors to prescribe the £3 nalmefene pill to drinkers whose habits fall just wide of their safety guidelines.

An average glass of wine contains just over two units of alcohol, so with the national watchdog’s safe drinking limits set at two to three units a day for a woman, and three to four for a man, consuming more than one glass of wine a day may constitute a dangerous habit.

The pill, which the health body are recommending to be prescribed to up to 600,000 people in England alone, works to reduce the amount of the chemical dopamine that is released from the brain, and which is responsible for the reward feeling of drinking.

This new drug will reportedly work to ensure that while drinkers can still enjoy their one or two drinks, they can safely stop at that, without needing more.

It is recommended that the pill is prescribed alongside a requirement to attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.

RTÉ's new show Drunk is a bit on the controversial side, as it offers free alcohol to contestants so that they can then be put through different tests to see the effects of the drug on our ability to function.

The results? Well, apparently scientists were amazed at how little twelve or thirteen standard units of alcohol affected contestants, causing concern at how tolerant we are becoming due to over indulgence.

Bill Malone, RTE Two Channel Controller said that "The first night we went filming, we supplied the alcohol. The Irish young people, all over 18 of course, drank 12 to 13 vodkas each and the majority of them were functioning completely normal on the tests.

"The medical professionals were astounded by the level of capacity in the young Irish people who were able to drink."

We're all for tolerance here at SHEmazing!, but not like this! If you're going out tonight, maybe set yourself a healthy limit of alcohol, you'll be glad of it in the morning!

Demi Moore and Bruce Willis’ youngest daughter Tallulah Willis has checked herself into rehab for alcohol and cocaine abuse.

The 20-year-old is now residing in celebrity treatment centre The Medows, in Arizona.

Tallulah is not the first in her family to suffer from drug abuse problems.

Demi did a second stint in rehab just two years ago, and – according to a source close to the family – feels terribly guilty that her daughter seems to be following in her footsteps.

“Demi feels so much guilt about Tallulah spiralling out of control like she did. It’s like she’s living past experiences all over again. But she’s trying to be strong for her daughter”

Scott Disick has become a celebrity in his own right from starring in Keeping Up with the Kardashians.

That’s why, following his hospitalisation on June 22, fans of the show were left worried as to his well-being.

More details are now emerging of the days leading up to his illness, with sources saying he was “partying really hard” in the week before he got sick.

While celebrating his 31st birthday party at a house in the Hampton on the 22nd, Disick had to be rushed to hospital after drinking too much.

News of this may not come as a surprise to those who watch KUWTK as this is not the first time alcohol has gotten Scott in trouble.

Apparently, the star has now realised the error of his ways and will no doubt be cutting back on his partying and drinking.

Scott is currently expecting his third child with partner, Kourtney Kardashian.

Feel better soon, Scott!

Have you woken up recently with the mother of all hangovers and belly full of regret and thought ‘maybe I have a problem’?

Well, University of Leicester scientists found that by asking patients two questions they were able to correctly identify alcohol and/or drug abuse in 87.2% of cases.

The questions they asked were:

  • How often do you have six or more drinks on one occasion?
  • As a result of your drinking or drug use, did anything happen in the last year that you wish didn’t happen?

They didn’t explain what kind of answers the people who were abusing alcohol gave, but we imagine if you’re answering yes to these questions every weekend, or more than once a week, then you definitely need to give the party lifestyle a bit of a rest for a while.

If you would rather go for a Hoegardeen over a glass of white any day, you will be pleased to hear that mead is now making a comeback.

The honey-based beer dates back to pagan times but is slowly becoming trendy again. The drink is now being used in cocktails and sauces and the rise in craft beers can be attributed to its comeback.

Sarah Thompson, director of Lurgashall Winery in West Sussex, says it was an “underground drink, popular with medieval re-enactment groups, pagans, and students.” She adds: “We’ve seen a big difference in attitude in the past six months. It’s one of the last drinks to have its comeback, after cider and gin. But it’s coming.”

But Sophie Fenton from Cornish Mead is trying to give it a more trendier twist by incorporating it into cocktails. Talking about the new drink, she said: “We’re trying to start a new trend for using mead to make cocktails. It’s finding a new, younger market.”

Apparently mead was drunk by a bride and groom for a month after their wedding – hmm, wonder if that will become trendy again…?

Usually when you hear that celebs don’t drink it’s because they had a problem with it in previous lives and spent some time in rehab. However, we’ve found some celebs that actually decided to refrain from drinking alcohol, purely for the goodness of their health.

Blake Lively

The former Gossip Girl has never been a drinker. She says she’d rather curl up with her hubby Ryan Reynolds sober at the end of the day rather than hitting the red carpet after a few fancy cocktails. We can’t say we blame her!

Most of us have woken up after a night out wanting to jump in a time machine to the moment before we ordered that round of shots, and just go home instead.

And while most of us curse the heavens and yell ‘NEVER AGAIN!’ into the toilet bowl, we always manage to find ourselves back there again.

While there’s nothing wrong with letting your hair down now and again, the latest figure from the World Health Organisation (WHO) have revealed some really scary facts about alcohol.

According to WHO, dangerous alcohol consumption was responsible for 3.3 million deaths worldwide in 2012.

“This actually translates into one death every 10 seconds,” Shekhar Saxena from WHO said.

On average, every person in the world age 15 and older drinks 6.2 liters of pure alcohol a year, according to the report.

However, less than half the world’s population drinks any alcohol, which means people who do, drink an average of around 17 litres of pure alcohol a year.

Scarily, binge drinking among women, including those living in Ireland, is on the rise.

And according to the graph, Ireland ranks in the second highest category of worldwide alcohol consumption, with an average intake of between 10-12.4 litres per person over the age of 15, in 2010.

Alcohol is a common player in parties and nights out; but what do you really know about drinking? Here are five common myths that may make you think twice, before having a drink:

1. You can drive an hour after drinking
Eh, no! It can actually take up to two hours for our bodies to process alcohol. Depending on your weight and how much was in the bottle of beer you just drank.

2. Getting drunker on vodka
This one is true. Hard alcohol gets you drunk and dark liquors like whiskey and rum can make you feel a hell of a lot worse he next day.

3. A nightcap brings on sleep
Actually, while it may bring on sleep, it can leave you feeling like you haven’t had enough shut eye. The alcohol causes your REM sleep to be disturbed meaning your rest is more disturbed rest than it would without the alcohol.

4. Mixing drinks makes you sick
While mixing drinks can leave you a little worse for wear the next day, it’s probably down to the amount consumed, not what was consumed.

5. You’ve a high alcohol tolerance
Everyone processes alcohol differently: for some it means it takes more alcohol to feel drunk rather than be drunk. A supposed ‘high tolerance’ can leave you unaware that you’ve had one drink too many.

Having a few drinks is a massive part of our culture.

But sometimes drinking too much can have a bad effect on us, from hangovers to being general unhealthy for our bodies.

Here are some ways you can cut back on your alcohol intake without drawing lots of questions.

1. Eat a good dinner
Having a big dinner before you start drinking is key. It means you won’t be slurring your words after a glass of wine!

2. Plan
Settle on the number of drinks you will have when you are out and stick to it.

3. Hydrate
Dehydration causes hangovers. To avoid this drink water frequently throughout the night.

4. Go alcohol free
There is a massive range of alcohol free beers, mocktails and even wine out there. So you can still avoid alcohol without sacrificing taste. Perhaps you could make every second drink an alcohol free one.

5. Drink slowly
The slower you intake the drink, the longer it will last. This is healthier for your body and your purse!

1. Walking in heels
Men out there may not know this, but, women can generally walk better in heels when drunk. Heels make your legs look amazing, so, ever wondered why we don’t wear the sky scrappers during the day? It is because they cause a lot of pain. But, when vodka hits our lips, we can strut down Harcourt street like we’re at London Fashion Week.

2. Singing karaoke
You’re probably thinking you would definitely do this sober but you really wouldn’t. Not properly. The courage and momentum drink supplies us with can make a terrible singer stand up and sing a Whitney Houston track like the woman herself. In our drunk memory, of course.

3. Slutty Dancing
It is hard to watch and if you could look back on it you would die.

4. Wearing oversized glasses and clothing
When you find items on a night out that are definitely from the joke shop, they’re like gold dust. You take those oversized glasses and you put them on like they’re the world’s greatest treasure. Then, you refuse to take them off for the rest of the night.

5. Deep meaningful conversations
You wouldn’t get into half as many DMC’s on a night out if you removed alcohol from the situation. Talking about your emotions and feelings is not the way to fill an evening on the tiles, but it can be therapeutic and also the beginning of a beautiful friendship. Or not.

6. Doing the splits
Remember one must be classically trained in this sort of thing or it will end very badly.

7. Sleeping in odd places
Under a table, in a wardrobe, in the hot press, – weird stuff can happen when you have had the one too many.

8. Going to the toilet with someone you only sort of know
If you were sober and shopping in the Ilac centre and some random girl you’ve met twice, but know from Facebook stalking, came up to you and asked if you could share a toilet, it would be very strange and awkward. But drunk? Hell yes I will!

9. Writing bitchy Facebook mails/texts/emails
Writing an offensive message to anyone when drunk is never going to end well. Especially if they have done nothing wrong or you are as sweet as pie to them when your sober. You wouldn’t do it sober, so don’t do it now.

10. Sleazing on someone you don’t fancy whatsoever
The beer goggles are on and you get yourself into a situation with someone you never would have considered getting with. Maybe it will work out well for you or maybe it is your friend’s ex. Either way tread with caution.

11. Buying endless rounds of drinks
You’re no Hugh Hefner. You are no Bill Gates. So, why flaunt that Visa Debit card around like it is an American Express Black card. You aren’t very generous when you are sober, so, just bring out cash the next time.

12. Making over the top arrangements
“If I’m 40 and your 40 and we are both still single…let’s get married.” Did this actually just happen?

13. Making concrete plans with people you hardly speak to
So many plans and you are never ever going to keep them. Just try and avoid these situations as much as possible.

A potential traffic cone or danger sign will suffice.
