*This is a breaking news story*

Local reports this evening state that a tragic incident has occurred in an upmarket Turkish nightclub, where a huge New Year's bash was marking the end of 2016.

It is believed that two men dressed in Santa outfits opened fire on revellers, killing and injuring dozens. The most recent information coming live from the scene reports that 35 people are dead. At least one of the dead is a police officer.

CNN Turk reports that at least one attacker is still at large outside the Istanbul venue. The BBC reports that after the shooting, the killer shouted the murder was in revenge for Russian involvement in the conflict in the Syrian city of Aleppo.

Ambulances and police forces are there now in the popular Ortakoy district of the city. The attack happened at 00.30 local time (11.30 Irish time).

Up to 30 people have been wounded in the attack, NTV is reporting.

And close-to 700 people would have been at the club – one of the city's most high-profile spots – at the time.

In March also in Turkey, 37 people died in a bombing at a bus stop in Ankara. Meanwhile in June, a suicide bombing at Istanbul airport killed 45 people.

The hashtag #PrayForIstanbul had in the aftermath of the killings begun trending on social media outlets.

Just hours after performing on Strictly Come Dancing last Saturday night, Gorka Marquez was the victim of an unprovoked attack in Blackpool.

According to emerging reports, the professional dancer, who was partnered with Tameka Empson, was with fellow dancers Alijaz Skorjanec and Neil Jones when he was attacked by a group of individuals.

Speaking to The Sun, a friend of the popular dancer explained: "Gorka and a few of the other dancers were heading to a nightclub to let their hair down after another brilliant show."

"All of a sudden this group of local louts came out of nowhere," the source continued. "One of them punched Gorka in the face and broke two of his teeth."

Confirming the incident, a spokesperson for the show said: "Gorka was sadly the victim of an unprovoked incident in Blackpool on Saturday night but he will be back in training this week and is looking forward to the group routine next weekend."

Stunned by the incident, Gorka's friend expressed disbelief, saying: "This was an entirely random and shocking attack on a group of friends simply trying to enjoy a night out."

According to a source close to Gorka, the dancer, who returned to London for dental treatment, is equally stunned by Saturday night's attack, saying: "He wasn't angry, he was just more shaken by the event."

It is understood Gorka will be returning to scheduled training in preparation for the show's Christmas special.

As reported by Rolling Stone, the father of two will recommence his tour in Chicago this Friday.

A 21-year-old backpacker has been killed in a brutal attack at a hostel in Queensland.

Mia Ayliffe-Chung – known to her friends as Mimi – studied psychology and childcare at college and following the completion of her studies earlier this year, had been travelling around Australia.

She was killed yesterday in a frenzied knife-attack at Shelley's Backpackers. Carried out by a 29-year-old Frenchman, he seemingly shouted "Allahu akbar" as he repeatedly stabbed the young woman.

Australian police are calling the incident "senseless" but have also confirmed that they are investigating whether the attack was motivated by Islamic extremism.

"We don’t have a motive yet," telegraph.co.uk quotes superintendent Ray Rohweder.

"Police were confronted with a terrible scene when they arrived. There were up to 30 people who witnessed the incident."

The violent outburst took place at a hostel in Home Hill, a quiet coastal town 60 miles south of Townsville.

A dog was furthermore killed, while a 30-year-old Briton was injured trying to protect Mia. He remains in a critical condition in hospital.

A local resident named as Ray told The ABC that he heard "blood curdling screams," on Tuesday night.

"I’ll never forget the screaming – I’ve never heard that before in my life. It’s terrible," he said.

"A sleepy little town like this, you don’t expect things like that to happen."

According to her Facebook page, Ms Ayliffe-Chung hailed from Derbyshire and went to school at Ecclesbourne School and Anthony Gell School in Derbyshire. She then went on to study  at Buxton and Leek College, and Chesterfield College.

Local media in Queensland say that Mia travelled north from Surfers Paradise ten days ago to work in a rural area to extend her Australian visa.

Her friends and family have been heart-wrenching messages to her on social media.

A heart-breaking message left by a mother whose child is also currently travelling read: "RIP.. and love to your family and friends – my son is travelling nearby in Aus living the dream as you were… You were brave enough to spread your wings… good on you."

*Some users may find these images distressing*

A warning has now been issued to pet owners in the Cork area, after a family dog was attacked seemingly for no reason while he lay in his own back-garden.

In a heart-wrenching post on an animal charity's Facebook page, images of the injured pet were afterwards posted – prompting an outraged response from hundreds of people.

Shared via ArcAnimal Rescue Cobh – it read: "Word of caution to any dog owners in Cobh – it's a fright to God when you can't even keep your own family dog out in the back garden without him being abused.

"Our family dog who wouldn't hurt a fly has been minding his own business in the back garden when some lowlife poured some sort something over him which has been described by the vet as a sort of chemical.

"The holes in his back are from someone poking him with an iron through the fence.

"So everyone please keep an eye on your dogs and if you see any suspicious activity around a house please report to the Gardai! We are absolutely devastated that someone would do this to our dog."

In response, Peta Ireland has also offered up a €2,000 reward for information that leads to the discovery of the perpetrators of the vicious attack.

"It's imperative that any community faced with a cruel and callous act such as this take measures to find the culprit and bring him or her to justice," Peta's Elisa Allen said.

"Animal abusers are a danger to everyone – they take their issues out on whoever is available to them, human or non-human – and must be caught before they act again."

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Garda Confidential Line on 1800-666-111.

Supermodel Naomi Campbell has been convicted of assaulting a paparazzo.

She scratched the photographer’s eye during the incident, which happened in Sicily six years ago.

The Londoner was handed down a six-month sentence by an Italian court on Friday – though it’s unlikely she’ll see the inside of a prison cell: the term has been suspended.

And according to The Telegraph, her lawyer has also vowed to appeal.

"We are appealing the ruling surrounding the 2009 incident," attorney Guido Carlo Alleva said in a brief statement.

Gaetano Di Giovanni was taking pictures of the model with her then-boyfriend, Russian billionaire Vladimir Doronin, in the Sicilian town of Lipari when Campbell hit him with her bag.

The outburst resulted in a scratch to Mr Di Giovanni's eye, causing him to seek medical treatment and take three days off work to recover from the injury.

Ms Campbell had been ordered to stand trial in Italy in 2013.

And while she reportedly reached a financial settlement with the photographer on condition that he withdraw the charges, the public prosecutor nevertheless proceeded with a conviction due to the severity of the incident.

Back in 1998, Naomi, who boasts a 30-year career in modelling, was ordered by a court to attend anger-management classes after striking her personal assistant with a mobile phone.

In 2008 she admitted attacking police at Heathrow in a row over lost luggage.

A further terrorist attack in Tunisia is now highly likely: that's the warning being issued this evening by officials in the UK.

In fact, Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond is telling British nationals to leave the country as soon as they can.

Many tourists are currently making preparations to leave on flights back to the UK tonight or tomorrow.

The Department Of Foreign Affairs in Dublin has yet to officially update its advice for Irish people visiting the North African nation.

It is still telling tourists there to exercise “extreme caution” – without going as far as to recommend that people avoid Tunisia entirely.

However, the Irish Times this evening is reporting that the Department is now "urgently reviewing" this stance.

On June 26 an attack by Islamic extremist group ISIS in the popular costal resort town of Sousse killed 38 people – including three Irish people. Thirty of the dead were from Britain alone.

The BBC says this evening that some UK travel firms have also already begun to repatriate their British staff from Tunisia.

And Thomas Cook said in a statement to Reuters that it was working to bring home 2,000 British and Irish guests currently at its resorts in Tunisia on ten flights scheduled for the next few days.

Reports on social media said that tourists were being escorted to the airport by Tunisian military.

British authorities explained that they simply do not believe that necessary security measures are in place to keep holiday-makers safe.

A Foreign Affairs statement this evening read: "Since the attack in Sousse the intelligence and threat picture has developed considerably, leading us to the view that a further terrorist attack is highly likely."

An earlier terrorist attack on March 18 at the famed Bardo National Museum in the capital of Tunis killed 24 people including 20 foreign tourists.

This is not how anyone envisions a midnight swim ending. After warnings that an alligator has been seen in a Texas marina, a 28-year old man was fatally attacked when he entered the water.

Tommie Woodward was attacked and killed by an alligator when he took a dip in the early hours of the morning at Southeast Texas Marina on Friday.

According to the Associated Press, the Orange County Sheriff’s deputies and a Texas game warden found the man’s body at 4:30 am.

Tommie was warned not to jump in the water to swim before he was attacked by the alligator.

Justice of the Peace Rodney Price told KFDM that Tommie and a woman were standing at a landing on the dock before he jumped in.

When the woman heard Tommie scream for help, she jumped into the water. Then she felt something brush up against her.

Despite owners of the marina putting a sign in place to warn swimmers of the dangers of swimming in the area, Tommie and the woman had picked the spot for a quick swim that night after leaving the marina’s bar.

KFDM also reported the pair had received a verbal warning to avoid swimming in the area in case of the alligator appearing.

Thankfully the woman with Tommie at the time managed to escape the attack without any injuries.

A police Captain in the area, Robert Enmon told the Associated Press that in recent times a very large alligator had been spotted at the marina on multiple occasions.

Enmon noted that despite this being the only fatal attack he's seen in his 25-years of service; "you've got to remember that alligators are a predatory species, they are territorial, and they will take advantage of an opportunity."

The owners had decided to put signage in place in order to prevent and swimmers from coming into contact with the alligator.

Unfortunately, that didn’t stop Tommie from entering the water.

The fatal attack is suspected to have been from the same alligator that the owners had been on the look-out for recently. The alligator is estimated to be 11 feet long.

An Irish woman in her 50s is feared among the 28 dead following a terrorist attack in Tunisia today.

The death is yet to be confirmed officially, but RTE is reporting that she is from Meath.

Her husband, who was holidaying with her, has already been in touch with authorities in Ireland, according to thejournal.ie, which cites Fine Gael TD Ray Butler's constituency office as its source.

Sundayworld.com carries quotes from Ray Butler, who says he has spoken to the woman's husband. "He is absolutely distraught," the politician stated. “This was the hardest phone call I’ve ever taken. My heart goes out to the family who are enduring unthinkable grief.”

Local radio in Meath has also reported the death.

Today's attack, which began at around noon, took place at two busy hotels in the popular seaside resort town of Sousse.

Abbeytravel.ie, Budgettravel.ie and Sunway.ie all offer packages to the area from Irish airports.

As well as the 28 fatalities, another 36 are believed to be injured, according to Tunisian national television. The dead are said to include tourists from Britain, Germany and Belgium.

Witnesses to the attack have been expressing their fear and astonishment via social media platforms such as Twitter and Instagram.

So far, no organisation has claimed responsibility for the incident. However, the region is hugely popular with European sun-seekers and boasts numerous nightclubs and bars – something which Islamist jihadists condemn.

Tourism is a major source of income for the Tunisian government, and the country is widely viewed as the most liberal in the region.

Still, in March, a terrorist attack at the famed Bardo National Museum in central Tunis killed some 24 people – including four Italian tourists, three French and one Briton. Many others were injured.

A shocking terrorism attack has taken place at a Tunisian resort popular with Irish visitors. Several fatalities are now being reported by local media.

A pair of gunmen shot dead at least 27 people in the attack, which was aimed at two of the busiest tourist hotels in Sousse in north-eastern Tunisia.

The town is extremely popular with Irish tourists, with the likes of Sunway.ie frequently offering package holidays to the area.

Many tourists were on the beach at the time and ran to take refuge in their hotel rooms once they heard gun shots.

RTE Radio spoke to Dublin woman Elizabeth O’Brien, who is currently holidaying in the region with her two sons.

She told RTE listeners how she was forced to grab her children and run when she heard gunfire: “We were on the beach, my sons were in the sea and I just got out of the sea. It was about 12 o’clock and I just looked up about 500metres from me and I saw a (hot air) balloon collapse down, then rapid firing, then I saw two of the people who were going to go up in the balloon start to run towards me — because I thought it was fireworks.

“So, I thought ‘oh my God, it sounds like gunfire’, so I just ran to the sea to my children and grabbed our things and as I was running towards the hotel, the waiters and the security on the beach started saying ‘run, run run!’ and we just ran to our room, which is like a little bungalow.

“So we are actually trapped in our room.”

Another man, John Yeoman from Britain, has been tweeting his fear and astonishment at what unfolded around him.

"There has been a shooting on the beach at our hotel it's been going on for 20 mins," he said a little after noon today. He later added: "We were in the pool when we heard automatic gun fire. People ran past saying there was an armed man on the beach."

He was forced to barricade himself into his hotel room using a bed and other furniture, and shared an image of his efforts online.

A terrorist attack took place on March 18 of this year at the famed Bardo National Museum in central Tunis. Some 24 people were killed in that attack – including four Italian tourists, three French and one Briton. Many others were injured.

The Department of Foreign Affairs does not recommend that Irish tourists should avoid the country entirely, but it says that caution is needed.

Indeed, the dfa.ie website warns: “The presence of extremist elements in Tunisia, as well as instability in neighbouring Libya, mean that there is a heightened threat of terrorism in Tunisia.”

It adds: “Irish citizens should maintain a high level of security awareness, monitor the local media closely and follow the instructions of the Tunisian authorities and tour operators.”

There is no Irish embassy in Tunisia, but there is an honorary consul.

The Department of Foreign Affairs has furthermore said that Irish people concerned for family members in Sousse can call 01 408 2000.
