barack obama

No matter how many dignitaries, ambassadors, Prime Ministers and regular celebs you've met in your life, it seems all it takes is one glance from Ryan Reynolds to knock you for six.

As the daughter of US President Barack Obama, 14-year-old Sasha Obama hasn't exactly had an ordinary upbringing. But just like most teens her age (and adults, let's face it), she's a big fan of Mr. Reynolds.

And after coming face-to-face with the *disarmingly* hot actor during the Canada State Dinner at the White House last week, poor Sasha got a bit flustered.

Vancouver native Ryan attended the event with his wife Blake Lively, but found a few minutes to chat with the President's youngest daughter before sitting down to dinner.

This candid snap, which shows poor Sasha looking like she's about to melt with excitement as she chats with Ryan, has been doing the rounds on the internet all weekend.

There's just so much to love about it – Sasha's uber-starstruck face, Ryan's 'let's have a serious conversation, shall we?' expression and, of course, 17-year-old Malia Obama being the cheekiest big sister ever in the background.

She might be a bit blurred out, but there's no mistaking that massive smirk and thumbs up that Malia is throwing in her little sister's direction:

We bet the unmerciful slagging is STILL going on, four days later.

It's no easy feat to stand there and look like you're loving your dad's awful jokes while the world's media watches you, but Sasha and Malia Obama pulled it off this year – while looking super-stylish to boot.

Malia, 17 and Sasha, 14, were at the White House yesterday for the President's annual Thanksgiving Turkey Pardon, a family event which sees the POTUS allow two turkeys to escape the chopping block.

Dressed in dark tights and flat leather boots with woolly socks, the pair both looked the picture of relaxed autumn style.

Malia wore an American Apparel striped turtleneck with a forest green A-line mini, and covered up with a seriously gorgeous two-tone Barbour-style jacket.

Sasha opted for a denim skirt and a cream knitted sweater, both also from American Apparel, which she accessorised with large tortoiseshell glasses – her first time wearing them in public.

We're definitely taking notes for our Christmas Day look.

This year's event definitely went more smoothly for the Obama daughters than last year's, which saw a former Republican Party staff member resign after criticising Sasha and Malia's behaviour.

The pair certainly made no effort to hide their boredom at the 2014 Turkey Pardon, something which Elizabeth Lauten called "classless" in a public Facebook post, adding that their outfits would be more fitting "at a bar."

This time around, Malia and Sasha were on their best behaviour, with Sasha even telling her dad, "that was good," after a particularly awful turkey joke.

Sounds like these two are definitely growing up – and they've definitely come a long way (in height, mainly) since their dad's first campaign trail eight years ago.

Such a change!

Half a dozen terrifying coordinated attacks on the city of Paris have left scores of its citizens dead.

Carried out by eight or more terrorists, it is believed that at least 120 people lost their lives during last night's tragedies, although no official death-toll has been confirmed. Another 200 have also been injured – 80 seriously.

This morning, terror group Isis formally claimed responsibility for the tragedy via its propaganda agency, the al-Hayat Media Centre.

The Department Of Foreign Affairs has said that one Irish citizen is among the injured.

President Francois Hollande has now called a state of emergency – the first declared by France since the end of World War II – in response. Border control has also been stringent in the aftermath and 1,500 soldiers have been deployed onto the capital's streets.

The metro is currently shut, and all schools, museums, libraries, gyms, swimming pools and food markets in Paris are closed today.

Residents are still being urged to stay inside and a curfew may be issued again this evening.

The largest single number of fatalities – officially 87 but possibly as many as 118 – took place at the Bataclan concert hall, located just a few hundred metres from the Charlie Hebdo magazine offices.

There, Californian rock band Eagles Of Death Metal (on Monday they performed at the Olympia in Dublin) were playing a gig to an audience of 1,500 when four men stormed the venue, taking more than 100 people hostage.

Although the band themselves survived unharmed, the terrorists subsequently began randomly shooting dozens of others, reloading their weapons three or four times during the attack.

And as armed French authorities surrounded the venue a little after midnight, five bomb blasts were heard: the attackers detonated their explosive vests just as police arrived.

"I found myself inside the concert hall when several armed individuals burst in, in the middle of the concert," Julien Pearce told The Guardian.

"Two or three men, without masks, came in with Kalashnikov-type automatic weapons and began shooting blindly at the crowd."

Clearly shell-shocked, Mr Pearce went on to describe the attack as "extremely violent".

"They knew what they were doing," he added of the killers. "They were very young."

Another witness at the Bataclan described the situation to The Telegraph as "carnage". They stated that before opening fire, one of the gunmen had asked: "What are you doing in Syria? You're going to pay now."

Timeline:

  • The attacks had begun on Friday evening at 9.20pm local time (8.20pm Irish time) at two popular restaurants – Le Petit Cambodge, and Le Carillon – both on trendy Rue Bichat in the 10th arrondissement. Close-to a dozen were believed to have been killed.
  • Within minutes, another shooting then took place at La Casa Nostra, a nearby Italian restaurant – resulting in five fatalities.

  • Shortly afterwards, there were two suicide attacks and one bombing near the Stade de France where the national team were playing Germany in a friendly soccer match. At least five died.
  • La Belle Équipe, a restaurant on the Rue de Charonne in the 11th arrondissement was then attacked, with gunmen killing 18.
  • French SWAT forces storm the Bataclan, where dozens of hostages are being held. Although the siege concludes at 1am, at least 87 die – including four policemen.

In January in Paris, a series of attacks that began at the Charlie Hebdo offices saw 17 people lose their lives.

Last night, Facebook kicked-off its Safety Check app, which allowed people in the area to tell their family and friends that they were safe.

Meanwhile, several landmark buildings around the world – including the Empire State building in New York, the CN Tower in Toronto and Dublin's Conference Centre – lit up in the French colours of blue, red and white in a show of solidarity.

Flags globally are also flying at half mast as a sign of respect.

Most flights to and from Paris were this morning operating normally, although Aer Lingus says it is offering passengers the option to change their flight for free.

When you're a kid, there's nothing better than going out to trick or treat with your parents – but these children were very lucky because they went trick or treating on the front garden of the White House.

Barack and Michelle Obama welcomed the children of military families to come to the White House for a festive afternoon, but we don't think Barack was expecting such genius costumes.

Obama absolutely cracked up when the world's smallest Pope landed on his doorstep, along with his clever dad. #ParentGoals.

He loved the costume so much he brought Michelle over to see it too.

The Obamas also welcomed a flurry of witches and princesses alike on the day, as well as an American Cub player.

The President Barack Obama and the First Lady, Michelle, put on a surprise performance for Usher last week as he celebrated his birthday in the White House.

The singer turned 37-years-old last Wednesday and was set to perform for the couple, when suddenly Obama broke out into song and presented him with a cupcake and lit candle.

Michelle then joined in, to the surprise of Usher.

So this really happened the other night…… The President and First Lady sang me Happy Birthday at The White House & I…

Have a seat, Vince Vaughn, because Barack Obama just became the coolest wedding crasher of all time.

When Stephanie and Brian (who chose not to reveal their last name to the press) picked a date and location for their wedding, they had no idea it would bring them close to a certain world leader.

The could told ABC2 that they were aware the president would be golfing in the San Diego region where they were planning their ceremony, but they never thought they would actually cross paths.

Stephanie and Brian married at the Torrey Pines Golf Course in La Jolla and assumed the president was golfing at another location, but then they spotted the secret service and realised he was closer than they thought.

The final putt of President Obama's golf game was positioned right behind their wedding alter and when he finished his game, he walked up to the wedding party and started shaking hands with excited guests.

Stephanie was hidden away in her bridal suite as she was just moments away from walking down the aisle, but when she saw who was outside her window, she made a dash to get his attention. Running out onto the golf course in her heels and dress (followed closely by Brian), she caught up with the president.

"I was just hoping that they'd notice my wedding dress," she said. "And it would just be the last chance….You don't get this chance very often so why not just go for it."

Stephanie said she was in tears running while all of her guests cheered her on. When President Obama finally met up with the couple, he congratulated the newly weds and shook their hands, while also offering the groom some advice.

"He saw my foot on the train of the wedding dress and he said, 'Oops can't put your foot on the wedding dress there.' Little piece of advice, pretty funny," Brian said.

Obviously, the president couldn't stay for the whole wedding but he sure did make their day even more memorable.

Stephanie and Brian's wedding photographer managed to capture amazing shots of the special moments, over on their blog.

Kanye West seems strangely intend on actually running for the White House in 2020 – and now the current US President has weighed in on the rapper's political aspirations.

"It couldn’t get any stranger," Barack Obama playfully told a crowd of Democratic donors in San Francisco on Saturday.

It was a fundraiser that Mr West himself headlined, with his wife Kim also being spotted among the revellers.

And Ms Kardashian made sure to send the President a couple of gifts once the event had wrapped up.

"Special delivery," she captioned an Instagram snap depicting two pairs of Kanye's trainers – the original Yeezy Boost 350, along with the boot-style Yeezy Boost 750 – which had been ear-marked for the President.

Both styles retail for a few hundred euro each.

Mr Obama had earlier in the day leant some invaluable advice to the multi Grammy award-winner – so perhaps Kim felt she owed Barack a favour.

"In case Kanye is serious about this whole POTUS thing – or as he calls it, 'peezy' – I do have some advice for him," Mr Obama had told the gathering.

"First of all, you have to spend some time dealing with some strange characters who act like they're on a reality TV show. You gotta be cool with that.

"Second important tip: Saying you have a beautiful dark twisted fantasy – that's what's known as off message in politics," he furthermore stated.

"And number three: Do you really think this country's going to elect a black guy from the South Side of Chicago with a funny name to be president of the US? That’s crazy. Cray."

Of course, both Mr Obama and Mr West both hail from Chicago's south side.

A total of 13 people are now dead following a mass shooting in the US state of Oregon.

Another 20 have been injured, and it is also being reported that the 20-year-old gunman has been shot dead by police.

The tragic incident took place Umpqua Community College in rural Roseburg on Thursday morning.

In the aftermath, US President Barack Obama stated that his country's gun laws will have to change.

"Somehow this has become routine," Mr Obama said at the White House.

The shooter, who was also a student at the college, had according to eye-witnesses asked people to stand and state their religions before he began firing.

Dozens of police officers and detectives remain the scene now, although authorities have ruled out a link with international terrorism.

Drawing on a message he allegedly posted on social media prior to the tragedy, CNN is reporting that the shooter picked the campus because it was a "soft target".

Social media reports also suggest that the 20 injured are all young women. One of them is critical wounded, while two others are described as being in a "serious" condition.

The last time Kanye West released an album was 2013, and his fans are just not willing to wait any longer to hear the star’s latest work.

Over the last year the father of one has kept his listeners pining for some new songs by teasing them with two singles Only One and Four Five Seconds.

Yeezus was a huge success that shot to the number one spot around the world after its release.

Naturally, his fans are very excited for Kanye’s next musical venture. So much so that one fan started a White House petition which demanded Barack Obama force his album to be released early.

In a short space of time the petition had managed to gather together tens of thousands of signatures.

The petition for the new album, Swish, read:

"Kanye West has kept us thirsty for too long. We haven’t gotten any new singles in months.

The President should order Ye to drop the album on the date August, 21st as his producer Mike Dean has been teasing people about."

Unfortunately for Kanye super fans, the petition was taken down after it was found to be violating the terms of participation.

If it had managed to reach the coveted 100,000 signatures necessary to be brought before Obama and his administration, we can only imagine what Kanye would have to say about it.

Maybe he would appreciate the chance to get to chat with Barack about his latest issue.

Reportedly Kanye wants a no-flying zone to be applied to the area surrounding his house. Apparently he wants his Hidden Hills property to become a no-fly zone in order to protect wife Kim and daughter North’s privacy.

Just hours after President Obama gave an interview to the BBC discussing how his “greatest frustration” as the President was his failure to enact “common sense” gun control laws, another mass shooting has taken place.

This time the incident occurred in Lafayette, a town in the state of Louisiana. The gunman, who is believed to be a 58-year-old “lone, white male” shot dead two people before taking his own life.

It is almost three years to the day that James Holmes shot and killed 12 people and injured a further 70. It was only days ago that he was found guilty of all charges against him.

While it has not been confirmed, many outlets have reported that the shooting took place during a screening of Amy Schumer’s new hit-comedy, Trainwreck.

Amy, along with a host of other celebrities, has tweeted her devastation upon hearing the tragic news.

At 16 years of age and with a father who's been the President of the United States for the last seven years, Malia Obama's upbringing has been far from normal.

Wherever she goes, be it to Chicago's Lollapalooza music festival, a Beyoncé concert or just out for a stroll with friends, the teenager has to have at least two Secret Service agents in her vicinity at all times. Very inconvenient if you're 16 years old and trying to impress boys.

One thing Malia's parents have allowed her to do to live a somewhat normal teenage life is to get a part-time summer job. Except, of course, this is no normal summer job… she's not working in her local Centra, we assure you.

The teenager is spending the next few weeks away from her home in Washington DC to work in New York as an intern on the set of HBO's Girls, according to TMZ. There are definitely a few perks to being the President's daughter…

Malia has been on set in Brooklyn all week, where Lena Dunham and co. are currently filming the show's fourth series.

The eldest Obama daughter obviously has an interest in TV production (or just in TV), as this is her second interning gig on the set of a show. Last summer she worked on Halle Berry's Extant in Los Angeles, where crew members told TMZ that she mainly went on coffee runs and stopped passers-by from accidentally walking on to the set.

It might not be the most glamourous of jobs, but we love that Malia's parents have encouraged her to work to get what she wants, rather than waiting for things to come her way.

President Obama was in the middle of giving a speech honouring LGBTQ Pride Month when he was heckled by a member of the crowd.

The US President tried to ask the heckler to stop interrupting him and when the person wouldn’t listen Obama pointed out, “you’re in my house,” which prompted a big cheer from the crowd.

The audience was clearly on Obama’s side throughout the altercation as they booed the heckler and began a chant, shouting “O-bam-a.”

The President even declared that, “As a general rule I am just fine with a few hecklers… But not when I’m up in the house,” which again warranted a huge laugh from the crowd and a slap on the back from Vice President, Joe Biden.

Following the incident, an immigration group claimed that the protestor was an undocumented transgender who advocates for LGBTQ immigrants. The group says that LGBTQ immigrants are often excluded from the immigration debate.

While Obama has received his fair share of hecklers in his time, it is a rare occurrence in the White House. As he said, if the guests are “eating the hors d’oeuvres and drinking the booze,” they are usually expected to be respectful and listen.
