Getting ready for a night out can result in panic and stress if things start going wrong. Here are four common night out dilemmas and how to resolve them without any hassle.

Achieving model pins: Shave your legs the night before tanning
If you don’t want sore legs with all those little irritating red dots, shave the night before. This gives your legs a chance to recover overnight instead of immediately overwhelming your pores with tan after you have only just shaved.

If you have a spot: Don’t squeeze it
As red as it looks now, it will look eight times worse if you start picking at it and make-up will not cover it. Unless it has turned into a white head and you really need to get rid of it, don't touch it. Sudocrem tends to help many people with bringing down the redness of their spots so you could try leaving this on the spot all day before getting ready to go out.

False face problems: Don't panic if your foundation won’t stay on
This can happen sometimes, but the causes vary from person to person. First, relax, then breathe. Try taking it off and apply a layer of powder to your skin before applying your foundation again. If you put on moisturiser just before it, that could have been acting as a barrier and prevented your foundation from staying on. Perhaps try giving the moisturiser time to settle into your skin before applying your make-up.

How to avoid an emotional breakdown about your hair: Wash it the day before
Really fresh hair can be quite difficult to work with sometimes. If you’re looking to style your hair in a way that’s not simply blow-dried straight, we would recommend washing it the day before. Otherwise, it can be tricky to make it stay in position, unless you put in some mousse.

When doing our make-up, choosing an eyeshadow colour can be a terribly big struggle. Obviously, any make-up colour will look nice with any eye colour when applied nicely. However, if you're stuck, here are a few suggestions of colours that suit your eye colour the most.

Blue eyes
1. Orange based colours to make the eyes pop (eg. copper, coral.)
2. Pale pink shades.
3. Deep blue/purple to enhance the blue in your eyes.

Brown eyes
1.
Green to complement the brown.
2. Neutral, brown shades.
3. Pink/purple.

Green eyes
1. Deep brown/gold/green.
2. Red undertones.
3. Pink/purple.

The opinion about waxing and shaving varies from person to person. Whether you only do one, or vary from one to the other. Here are the important differences between both.

Pain
Pain is the first thing we panic about when we consider waxing. Of course it hurts slightly, but it depends on the area and the person. Waxing lasts a lot longer so if you find you get sore after shaving, you will have to experience that pain more regularly, whereas waxing is just a second of bravery, intense pain and then, boom, smoothness all round.

How long does it last?
Waxing removes the entire hair follicle rather than just slicing off the top of the hair which is why waxing lasts for so much longer. Over time, waxing also causes the hair to become thinner so it will stop growing back as much as it did before. Shaving needs to be done regularly and doesn’t grow back as nicely as the hair that you’ve had waxed. Shaving can cause stubble and itchiness. However, in order to be able to wax the hair it needs to be quite long so you need to wait for it to grow back.

Problems
There can be problems with both waxing and shaving but like anything, it depends on each individual person. Both can irritate the skin, leaving it itchy and red. Shaving can also cause the hair to grow back thicker and darker which is why you should never shave areas such as your face and arms (even if you’re tempted for a quick solution.)

The pro’s of shaving
1. It is quick
2. It is less painful
3. It is helpful in emergency, going out last minute scenarios
4. It’s cheap

The pro’s of waxing
1. It lasts much longer than shaving
2.  It can reduce hair growth
3.  Skin stays smoother for longer
4. Ingrowing hairs are less common

These handbag essentials will get you out of many a stitch. There's a reason we carry the kitchen sink, you know!

1. Baby wipes
You don’t need a baby to need baby wipes. These are handy for any spills on your clothes, smudging make-up and are really handy if you need to apply make-up in the car.

2. Hand sanitizer
Because you never know when you might have to use a public bathroom. Or shake someone’s hand when you really don’t want to. Or sneeze. Or get sneezed on. The list is endless.

3. Pen and paper
If you’re anything like us, making lists is a way of life. Grocery lists, reminders or an idea for that book you want to write that you know you’ll forget – having a pen could literally change your life. Or something not quite so dramatic…

4. Tissues
At your boyfriend’s friends house having a few pre-game drinks and there’s no toilet paper – we’ve all been there. No woman likes to drip-dry so pack some tissues.

5. Sunglasses
Unexpectedly, the sun comes out and you are left squinting over your coffee – so not chic. Sunglasses will always be the epitome of glamour so keep them safe in your handbag. Oh, and they’re good for protecting your eyes too, or something like that.

6. Tampons
The horror of realising you have gotten your period while in a public place alone can never be underestimated. Keep some tampons in your bag and never be caught in the lurch again. Plus, you know your not-as-organised friends will be thanking you when you can lend them one.

7. SPF
Looking after our skin is really important and although your make-up may have protection in it, keep some high SPF in your bag too for top ups.

8. A small umbrella
Because we live in Ireland, it could be the hottest day of the year and you may still end up thanking your lucky stars you packed an umbrella.

9. Mirror
You just ate the most amazing spinach salad – now let’s make sure it’s not in your teeth.

10. A hair bobbin
It’s a lovely sunny day and you get a 99 (with a Flake) when suddenly a gust of wind blows all of your hair into the ice-cream. Avoid this disaster by making sure you have some hair bobbins in your bag.

11. Safety pins
For those awkward moments the zip pops – oops!

12. Pain killers
If you get a bad headache, always reach for the water first. That said, having some pain killers on hand can also be a good idea.

13. Clear nail polish
Dabbing some clear nail varnish on a small tear in your tights will stop it from getting worse and takes up less room than a spare pair.

14. Hair brush
Neaten your look in seconds with a quick sweep of a hairbrush.

15. Mints
Garlic breath right before your date? Not cool.

It’s that time of the year again when we have to shed our final layers and actually – gasp – show skin. The thought can be daunting, especially for those of us who hate our feet, and there are quite a lot of us.

Here’s how to get beautiful feet you can be confident about when the nice weather comes out:

How to cure smelly feet
It’s important first to deal with any underlying issues you may have with your feet – such as bad odour. To keep your feet smelling clean, make sure to wash them thoroughly at least once a day and more if the weather is particularly warm. Wear loose fitting shoes and breathable socks, or none if possible.

Yellow toenails
Many women who suffer with yellow toenails are more than likely dealing with a side-effect of wearing nail polish. However, it’s important to rule out any fungus first. If you think your yellow nails are down to nail polish and not something more serious, try rubbing the nails with some lemon juice.

Dry, cracked skin
Summer feet are moisturised feet. If you have cracked heels and dry, calloused skin on your feet, invest in a high-quality foot moisturisers. Apply at night and pop on some cotton socks. Your tootsies should be soft in no time.

Scrub
Using a foot scrub can ensure your feet are rid of dead skin cells. To make a homemade foot scrub, mix brown sugar, olive oil and some essential oil of your choice before scrubbing feet and rinsing off. Do this once a week for smooth, soft feet. You can also invest in a pumice stone to keep your feet soft.

The Michael Kors beauty range has only just started to make ripples over here and honestly doesn’t get enough love – it’s available in Arnotts and online. The brand’s limited edition Glow Colour Collection for spring 2015 features a new Hydrating Bronze Gel Crème; vibrant colours for nails and lips, bronzer, and a dry oil spray to achieve the iconic Michael Kors sun-kissed glow. My pick? Definitely the nail lacquers in Blush, Daydreamer and Paradise – they’re incredibly long lasting.

L’Oréal Infallible is a new modern matte foundation that looks set to rival some of our high-end favourites. There’s also a matching primer; both are lightweight, melting formulas that glide and fuse onto skin and lends flawless coverage. It’s just €11.99 from all good pharmacies!

Estée Lauder is a great brand for basics – their Double Wear range is particularly reliable for those of us who don’t have time for touch-ups. Featuring the same beloved formula, the newly updated Double Wear Stay-In-Place Eye Pencils now include a water-resistant claim, a silicone smudge tip and an updated collection of shades.

MAC have long been known for teaming up with designers to create amazing collections, so it’s fantastic to see that their latest collaboration is with an Irish name.  Philip Treacy is their artist of choice for spring 2015 – catch the collection at Brown Thomas from April.

Their new mascara that promises to hook, lift and curl lashes, Benefit Roller Lash is beautifully packaged, but bloody expensive at €26. After trialing it extensively, though, I do think it’s worth investing in if you’re sick of overly dramatic, clumpy mascaras. This one is definitely lifting and separating, and the formula seems to get better with age!

This week, SHEmazing! were lucky enough to have a chat with the fabulous make-up artist Annette O'Brien about all things beauty.

Annette is a highly-acclaimed make-up artist in Ireland having worked with big names such as Lucy Kennedy, Miriam O'Callaghan and even James Nesbitt.

You can catch up with Annette on her website and have a look at some of her stunning work as well as on TwitterFacebook and YouTube

1. What's your best budget beauty buy?
I have so many budget beauty buys but I love Carmex moisturising lip balm. I wear it every single day and it is so long wearing. It's fantastic to wear over lipstick and gives a glossy appearance too. It is one of my go-to products for a perfect red lip – exfoliate the lips and then apply a heavy layer of Carmex all over. A definite must in my makeup kit for brides. It's available in most pharmacies and Penneys also stock it now.

2. What's your top make-up tip?
The next time you are applying your makeup start off with the eyes. As a makeup artist, this is one of the most practical things I've learned. Once your eye makeup is done you can wipe all the residue from underneath the eye and apply fresh concealer and foundation then. No messy eye makeup here!

3. Do you have a favourite all-round beauty product?
I do for sure! I absolutely love Anastasia Beverly Hills Dip Down Pomade. This is the most amazing brow product I have found. So easy to use and a little goes a long way. Brows are such an important feature and they really shape the face. I love the sleek, defined shape this products gives. I use this gel-like product in every one of my makeup video tutorials and there you can see how easy it is to use.

4. What's your earliest beauty memory?
I loved Barbie dolls when I was younger, didn't we all?  I loved them because they had hair I could cut and restyle, nails that could be painted and faces that I applied makeup to! I did this to every single one of my Barbies – as you can imagine they were "a sight for sore eyes" by the time I was finished with them!

5. Most girls have a signature scent – what's yours?
I have two! For daytime I love Zara White. It's a fresh, floral smell and it reminds me of summer and holidays. For night & special occasions I always go for Carolina Herrera 212 Sexy. A gorgeous, lingering perfume of bergamot and geranium that makes me feel so girly. Every time I wear it people ask about it. I have so many good memories from the scent.

6. What's in your make-up bag right now?

  •  Makeup Forever HD Foundation
  • Creme De La Mer – The Concentrate
  • Mac Prep & Prime – Radiance (my highlighter)
  • Mac Blush – Fleur Power
  • Chanel Satin Finish Radiance Powder
  • Anastasia Beverly Hills DipDown Pomade
  • Mac Lipliner – Hip n' Happy
  • Anastasia Beverly Hills #12 brow brush
  • Chanel lipstick in Gabrielle

Thanks for answering all of our questions, Annette!

Annette was also kind enough to share her brand new make-up tutorial with us; gold glitter with smokey eye and a MAJOR flick – perfect for nights out with the girls.

We’ve been given plenty of hair envy of late, with a number of stars embracing the bob and chopping off their tresses.

The latest celebrity to rock the ‘it’ hairstyle of the moment is actress Jessica Alba, who has cut off the long locks she is so famous for, in favour of a stunning long bob.

The 33-year-old took to her Instagram account to share her fresh look with her followers, posing with stylist to the stars Giann Andrea.

“Uh oh someone chopped off her hair!” wrote the Valentine’s Day star, showing off a side view of her caramel locks.

“Thank you @giannandrea1 for the cute cut! Love it!” she added, posting a second shot.

It seems that Kim Kardashian has really set the short hair trend in motion this season!

We absolutely love Jessica’s ‘do, but we’re not sure if we would be so brave as to go in for the chop!

In make-up terms, Instagram is the new YouTube. As YouTube becomes increasingly saturated with tutorial after tutorial, artists are increasingly moving towards the use of edited pictures and short-form video clips in order to share their work and stand out on what is a far more aesthetic platform.

Recently a really popular YouTuber, Gossmakeupartist, criticised the likes of Anastasia Soare (creator of the Anastasia Beverly Hills line) for favouring a somewhat heavy makeup look and helping to push the trend for that technique on Instagram in particular. It turned into something of an ugly (though popcorn-worthy) Twitter spat, which really was a shame.

There’s room for everyone and every kind of technique online, and Instagram is a brilliant tool for creatives of all types to showcase their work – some MUAs have even been discovered via their accounts. On that note, I thought I’d take things a little closer to home, and explore some of Ireland’s best makeup artists on Instagram…

1. Siobhán McDonnell – @letzmakeup82
I'm sure that more than a few of you know Siobhán from her hugely popular YouTube channel, LetzMakeup. She's hugely likeable and her honest, no-fuss persona is something that really stands out to me. Her videos are always some of the first for me to click on, but she's also totally worth following on Instagram for a bit of inspiration and product porn!

Super-filtered sneak peek of Friday's makeup tutorial….

2. Heather Davern @heatherdavernmakeup
Heather showcases a lot of looks on herself and her core aesthetic is all about fresh, clean skin, smokey eyes and daringly bold lips. She makes the somewhat daunting task of pulling off the two look absolutely effortless, and I'm always jotting down her choices and combinations of shades, as she simply never gets it wrong.

3. Ciara Allen – @ciaraallenmakeupartist
As well as being seriously talented at what she does (having worked with MAC, L'Oreal, Wella and more), Ciara's a lot of fun! Give her a follow for a peek at her professional work as well some personal musings, plenty of product chat and mini reviews – always with added craic!

4. Noella Geoghegan – @noellamakeup
Noella is a multi-skilled artist – aside from her makeup skills, she's a trained eyebrow professional, and had the privilege of working backstage at the London Olympics opening ceremony back in 2012. Her Instagram feed is full of the most beautiful creatures – mostly models that she's made up – and her impeccable technique speaks for itself.

5. Fabiana Coppola – @fabsyyy
MAC-trained Fabiana has just gone out on her own and I've no doubt that her venture will be a huge success. I love how she heavily favours a cat eye and her blending is just always on point! Fabiana uses a lot of indie makeup brands as well as the usual suspects, so definitely check her out if you're after something that little bit more unusual.

Well there's a look of disgust if ever I've seen one!

How many of us take the time each week to wash all of our make-up brushes properly as well as tossing our make-up bags (yes, all of them) into the wash for a good scrub?

The only time we ever really seem to care about the state of our make-up bag is when we buy a shiny new product and it just doesn’t do it justice to throw it in the pit so we make everything shiny.

Here is what you need to be doing in order to keep your make-up bag free of harmful bacteria and germs:

Wash your brushes…often
We know it’s an obvious one but it’s probably the most important. Your make-up brushes are being used ON your skin EVERY day and they need to be clean. Take ten minutes once a week and wash your brushes thoroughly in either hot soapy water or special make-up brush cleanser.

Throw your make-up bag in the laundry
Another chore to do once a week. There’s no point in washing your brushes and then throwing them into a germ-filled make-up bag now is there?!

No fingers please
If you have any foundation or pot product make sure to use a cotton bud to scoop out what you need. Your fingers are germ-magnets and every time you pop them in there you’re leaving some behind to transfer onto your face next time. Not cool. If there is a tube version of the pot product available, even better.

That pencil sharpener though…
Your pencil sharpener needs to be kept spick and span. Your lip pencils and eyeliners need to be sharpened regularly as they are used on your skin, and more importantly – your eyes! This means the sharpener itself needs to be perfectly clean too.

Sharing isn’t caring
We know it’s in our nature to wear each other’s clothes and do each other’s hair but the line needs to be drawn at sharing make-up. Everyone’s skin is different and by allowing someone to use your brushes/lipstick/mascara you run the risk of transferring skin issues to them or getting them yourself.

Regular clean-out
Make-up has an expiry date. Here is how long common beauty products last and how often you need to replace them, even if they haven't run out:

Mascara: 2-3 months
Eyeshadow: 6 months
Foundation: 6-12 months
Stick concealer: 2 years
Liquid concealer: 1 year
Eyeliner: 3 months

We have to hand it to her – Kylie Jenner has one of the most perfect pouts we have ever seen. And who hasn’t experimented with that lip-liner trick in a bid to look even just the tiniest bit like her?

Well, while we’re messing around with lipstick and filters, one woman went to extremes to copy Kylie’s look – with hilarious results.

Australian Brittany Foster decided to try out the latest beauty craze, a non-surgical lip enhancer that works using suction technology.

The rather extreme results were captured on video by her friends, and while her three-second trout-pout is pretty amusing to behold, it’s the reactions of Brittany and her friends that are the highlight of this footage.

Just check it out below, and prepare to laugh.

Eyeshadow palettes are some of the most hyped products on the beauty market. With each brand shouting louder than the next, it’s quite hard to know what’s worth handing over your hard-earned cash for. Writing about beauty means that I’ve had the uber-difficult task of trying as many palettes as humanly possible over the past few years.

Here, I’m breaking it down into some of my recent picks, as well as all-time favourites…

The Classic
Urban Decay Naked Basics, €30 from Debenhams

Skip the hype over Naked 1, 2 and 3 and keep it simple with the Naked Basics palette. It’s small, it’s portable and, if you like your makeup to be simple and streamlined, you will love this. The paler shades are great for opening up the eyes and the darker crease colours also double up as brilliant shades for filling in brows. Oh, and that deep, matte black? Brilliant as a smokey liner!

The Newbie
Smashbox Double Exposure, €39.60 from Arnotts and larger Boots stores

This is the brand’s second neutral palette. The first, Full Exposure, didn’t quite do it for me as the shimmery shades were a little too heavy on the glitter. This one is a lot easier to work with and has some beautiful warm and jewel-toned shades. It’s good value for the price as the double-ended brush you get with it is actually fantastic, and there’s also a handy little booklet of ideas and guides for using the palette.

The Dark Horse
TheBalm Nude ‘Tude Palette, €35 from Cloud10Beauty.com

Ever heard of TheBalm? I’ve yet to try a bad product from them, and happily, the brand is quickly becoming more accessible in pharmacies nationwide, as well as from my favourite Irish beauty e-tailer, Cloud10Beauty. TheBalm Nude ‘Tude palette is an absolutely gorgeous warm-toned array of shadows; ranging from glittery coppers to matte, bone-white shades. The colours are well thought out and I’m a sucker for the cute packaging!

The Bargain
Wet ‘n’ Wild Comfort Zone Palette, €6 from Penneys and pharmacies nationwide

The Comfort Zone palette is brilliant value even if you don't end up using all of the colours – I'm mad about the deep, dark shimmery brown in it, and the shade down on the bottom right-hand corner is a pretty excellent dupe for MAC's Club eyeshadow. The pigment on these is incredible, they’re easy to blend, and just like any shadow, they’ll last all day with the help of a good primer.
