Associate Fashion and Beauty editor of Bustle magazine, Marie Southard Ospina, is the latest person to challenge global perceptions of beauty.

This year, we’ve seen women send their images to photoshopping experts across the globe and requested the photos be altered so that the result fits in with that particular culture’s understanding of ‘beautiful’.

Well, Marie has gone one step further and investigated the cultural link between beauty and weight which allows us to see how many experts altered Marie's size in a bid to make her ‘beautiful’.

Having been judged on her size, Marie says "Stereotypes include, but are not limited to: laziness, selfishness, stupidity, naiveté and even a lower socioeconomic class."

Here are just some of the results of Marie's experiment.

Ukraine

Mexico

Latvia

Despite some obvious alterations having been made to Marie's size in some of these images, she says: "I'm aware that the notion of "thin is the only beautiful" doesn't permeate the entirety of the world."

Evidence of which can be seen in Italy's and Australia's re-touching which doesn't appear to focus on Marie's size as much as other country's did.

Australia

What do you make of Marie's investigation?

Beauty Angel is our latest go-to guide for all our pampering needs, so we were thrilled to catch up with Sarah, the face behind the wonderful site, to chat all things beauty and make-up related!

The lovely Sarah is a self-confessed make-up addict since her early teens and has recently completed a course with LA Make Up Academy which she says has only increased her passion for the industry!

Sarah’s unmistakable enthusiasm bodes well for us because it means her site is chock-full of interesting reviews and top tips!

What more could you want?!

1. What is your best budget beauty buy?

There are some amazing budget beauty buys out there, so  it’s quite hard to choose! I think the one I have recommended the most is the Rimmel Wake Me Up Concealer. It’s really creamy and moisturising. It feels cooling when you apply it, so it’s perfect if your eyes are a little puffy in the morning. I find some concealers can be drying or go cakey, but this one definitely isn't. It does a great job at covering dark circles and redness to perk up your skin. It costs just €6.99 so it won’t break the bank!

2. What is your top make-up tip?

My top make-up tip is simply to look after your skin. The better your skin, the better the canvas for your make-up. I know it can be a pain when you’re in a hurry or tired, but it really pays to clean your skin properly.

I always do a two-step cleanse at night. I usually start using a Micellar water to take off the first layer of make-up. At the moment I’m using the Ziaja Rose Butter Micellar Water. I then use a wash-off cleanser. Lately, I’m using the Clinique Take the Day Off Balm which is an oil-based balm, so it even removes traces of waterproof make-up. I massage the balm into my skin and remove it with a warm facecloth. Then I finish with a serum and moisturiser.

I find that once you get into the habit of doing this, it doesn’t take too long, your skin will thank you and your make-up will look flawless!

3. Most girls have a much-loved lipstick – what's yours?

I think I’m a little bit different in that I don’t wear lipstick that often. I usually prefer a lip gloss, but lately I’m loving a gloss stick. My all-time favourite range is the Soap and Glory Sexy Mother Pucker Gloss Sticks. Their gloss pencils have a lovely texture, strong colour and last really well. My favourite every day colour is Nudist, it’s a great everyday pinky brown.

4. What was your very first perfume and what are you currently wearing?

I’m really going to show my age here as I suspect many SHEmazing! readers won’t have heard of my first perfume, it was called Exclamation! It came in a bottle that was shaped like an exclamation point and was a firm favourite with 90’s teens!

At the moment my favourite scent is Nuxe Prodigieux Le Parfum. If anybody knows the cult product Nuxe Huile Prodigieux, this scent is the perfume version of the oil. It’s really fresh and quite summery, but I can’t seem to part with it even in winter. For night time I usually wear Viktor and Rolf Flowerbomb which I think is a perfume you either love or hate!

5. You're only allowed to use three make-up products for the rest of your life… what are they?

As the most indecisive person in the world, I could think about this question for days! But I think I could commit to these products for the rest of my life…

Revlon Colorstay Foundation
When I first tried this I wondered where it had been all my life.  This foundation gives medium-full coverage and the finish is perfect. It’s not too drying, but lasts the full day without budging. There is a version of this for dry skin and combination skin and it costs just €17.99.

Urban Decay 24/7 Eyeliner in Mushroom
I’m trying to be clever here as I think I could use this shade as eyeliner, but also to fill my eyebrows if I was stuck! I’ve never found another eyeliner to beat this. I have really watery eyes and these don’t budge all day and are really strongly pigmented.

Soap and Glory Sexy Mother Pucker Gloss Stick in Fuscia-ristic
This is how much I love these gloss sticks! I would really miss my blusher if I could only have these three products so I figure I could use this pink/coral shade on my lips and my cheeks, sneaky!

Perfume can be fairly magical, right?

We need only get a fleeting waft of a particular scent and we’re instantly transported to a different time, place or stage in our lives. Smelling the various perfumes we wore during our teenage years is almost like getting access to a time machine.

The easiest way to recall how you felt sitting in the front row of Irish class or standing outside the Home Ec room with your mates is to take a deep breath of your favourite fragrance at the time and allow yourself to relive those ‘interesting’ years in your life.

Here are just five fragrances we rocked when we thought dark eyeliner, poker straight hair and school ties over white vests were the height of style. (Cheers for that, Av Lav.)

White Musk

This Body Shop classic saw us through from the first day of secondary school until the moment we left gripping our Leaving Cert results. Fresh, inexpensive and instantly recognisable; this fragrance was a hit with most girls in their teens and their bank balances.

Tommy Girl

Who didn’t have at least one bottle of Tommy Girl on their shelf as a teenager? Even now when we get a hint of this classic teen scent, we instantly recall the day Conor in the year above let slip that he was more interested in our best friend than us. Sob.

Glow by J Lo

Jennifer Lopez could do no wrong in our eyes when we were teens. So, when the queen of the R&B scene released her own fragrance, we knew exactly what we’d be teaming with our bandana, hoop earrings and fur jacket.

Ralph

Ralph, in its small blue bottle, was the perfect size to slip in to our bag amongst our ring binders and forged PE notes. With its floral, fruity fragrance and hint of sophistication, there was no way Conor would be immune to our charms this time, dammit.

Curious

When teen queen Britney released her first fragrance with Elizabeth Arden back in 2004, very few teen girls felt they could live without their beloved Brit’s signature scent. The vintage-looking bottle was the icing on the cake for all of us, right?

As every woman knows, a waxing appointment is not exactly a cause for celebration. Yes, we leave the salon silky smooth and oh-so-super-sexy, but we also have to deal with a hell of a lot of discomfort in the meantime.

If you dread your appointments, but adore the results of a good wax, then you should definitely consider some of the following hacks to make sure your beauty regime is as agony-free as possible.

Hell, we don’t have time for pain, we’re busy women.

1. Refrigerate some soothing lotion the night before your appointment and turn to it in case of an emergency later.

Future you will thank you for it!

2. Pop an over-the counter painkiller about half an hour before you’re due to hop up on that table.

You, girl, are ready for this.

3. Do NOT schedule a waxing appointment when you’re due your period because your sensitivity to pain is heightened at this time of the month, however your tolerance to pain is at its highest a few days after your period!

Bring it ON!

4. Apparently our pain threshold is at its highest between 3 and 5pm every day girls, so get booking an afternoon session!

No, a morning appointment doesn't suit me unfortunately.

5. Avoid using scented body creams, working-out or wearing restrictive clothing for about 24 hours after your waxing session.

You do NOT want your perfectly smooth skin ruined by an eruption of pimples due to misuse of lotions or excessive sweating from a tough work-out.

If you follow these tips, you will have done everything in your power to make the appointment as painless and stress-free as possible. Go you!

Some times we think we have our whole beauty regime down; we know our favourite brands and we can contour like a pro and then other times we feel like a five-year-old rummaging through our mum's beauty bag with absolutely NO idea what we're doing and why it's going oh-so-very wrong.

Here are just five beauty mysteries that leave us completely stumped every single time.

If you've gotten to the bottom of them, either spread the word or spare a thought for the rest of us who are still very much in the dark.

Pedicure  vs. nail polish remover

1. Someone banging a door in another country can easily result in your chipped manicure.

But nothing short of a pneumatic drill will rid your toenails of that hideous plum shade you’ve been rocking since your Lanzarote trip in May.

Mascara vs. eye make-up remover

2. You could get into bed after spending hours removing your eye make-up until there isn’t the merest hint you went anyway near your make-up bag that day.

But when you look in the mirror the next morning, every spec of mascara and eyeliner has flaked under your eyes and, horrifyingly, coagulated in the corner of your eye.

Tan vs. skin

We know all the application rules, hell we could write a book on them and we stick to them.

But we rarely experience a flawless tan finish after a DIY application. Seriously, what secret are we missing out on here?

Eyeliner vs. skill

We know the rules of winged eyeliner application, we apply the technique and we hope for the best every single time.

But why do we always look like we nailed one, butgave up halfway through the other?

Blusher vs. talent

We watch the tutorials, blusher brush in hand, and then we carefully apply the same technique that the lovely girl in our laptop said we should.

But then we look in the mirror, quietly reach for a facewipe and vow to try again tomorrow.

But do you know what, girls? It doesn't really matter because despite all these thing we still look pretty fierce, right?!

Your Beauty, an Irish beauty, fashion and lifestyle blog written by the stunning Andreea from Bucharest, offers fantastic reviews of the latest products and an insight into the numerous beauty issues we've all been faced with, so if you're on the look-out for some top tips then be sure to check her out!

The lovely Andreea, who started her blog almost four years ago, chatted to us this week about her budget beauty buys, her Maybelline must-have and her essential eyebrow tool!

1. What is your best budget beauty buy?

I am a concealer junkie and after trying numerous high end products; Laura Mercier, Bobbi Brown, Lancome etc, nothing compares to The Eraser from Maybelline. It’s the best! Never cakes, covers well and looks flawless.

2. What is your top make-up tip?

Apply your concealer after the foundation application, using the upside down triangle method. Using a fluffy eyeshadow brush blend it in with circular strokes. Finally, set it up with a fine translucent loose powder.

3. Most girls have a much-loved lipstick – what's yours?

This is so hard to narrow down! I love bold, vibrant colours and by looking at my collection, I seem to be attracted to different shades of coral. If I really had to choose one, you cant beat Mac Vegas Volt. A must-have!

4. What was your very first perfume and what are you currently wearing?

My very first scent was Clinique Simply, I wore it for most of my teenage years. Sadly it was discontinued, but I still managed to track down a bottle on Ebay to keep for special occasions! Currently I switch between Marc Jacobs Daisy and Dolce&Gabbana Light Blue, both light and uplifting, which is great for early Monday mornings!

5. You're only allowed to use three make-up products for the rest of your life… what are they?

Eyebrow pencil, concealer and mascara. I could use the concealer to hide imperfections as well as an under eye brightener, whilst the mascara will help to make me look awake. Eyebrow pencil should be a basic human right, defined brows are a must!

Some of us have been Shellac converts for years, while others have yet to dip their fingers in this unknown world of nail care.

Whether you prefer to go au naturel with your nails or you’re a dab hand at a DIY manicure, there’s a lot to be said for availing of a Shellac treatment from time to time. (Or more often, if you become totally addicted to this ‘manicure miracle’.)

The treatments tend to be relatively inexpensive, the majority of salons offer free removal and there’s no denying that longevity plays a massive role in Shellac’s popularity!

But what exactly is Shellac, why is it often referred to as a ‘manicure miracle’ and what should you expect from a treatment?

Here are some questions you may have pondered if you’ve yet to treat yourself to this revolutionary salon treatment.

1. How is Shellac polish different from normal nail polish?

Normal nail polish tends to chip right? Well, Shellac polish is a whole lot thicker than your standard varnishes; a treatment requires three coats and each coat is then ‘set’ under a UV light which makes it virtually chip-proof!

2. How long does it last?

It is recommended that you have your Shellac removed after approximately two to three weeks because this is when natural nail growth will become visible.

After this point there will be a stark contrast between your natural nail colour and your chosen Shellac shade, and yes that’s the case even if you opt for a French polish!

Some lucky girls, however, can get up to a month out of a Shellac treatment before their own nail begins appearing!

3. What is the upkeep like?

Many therapists advise their clients to use cuticle oil on their nails twice a day while rocking their Shellac as this will nourish the nail beneath the treatment.

A small price to pay to ensure we’re looking after our own nails beneath the polish, right?

4. Does Shellac have an artificial look?

Shellac doesn’t lengthen or thicken your nails in any way, so your nails will look as natural as they normally do when you apply polish, but will last a whole lot longer!

5. What are the downsides of the treatment?

Shellac is not without its cons, but if you’re aware of these issues, they are very easy to avoid.

Shellac can damage your nails if you don’t have it removed professionally, something which is normally included in the cost of the initial treatment.

Picking and peeling at your Shellac treatment will have a detrimental effect on your nails, leaving them broken and very brittle, so be sure to take advantage of the salon removal!

The verdict

Shellac is a wonderful treatment to have because you get serious bang for your buck, manicured nails do wonders for your overall look and there’s something seriously indulgent about having someone tend to your hands and nails, right?

Beware though, you will spend more time than your boss might appreciate staring dreamily at those fab nails of yours, so maybe you should opt for your first treatment over the Christmas holidays!

Some of us thought it was a walk in the park and others (usually known as people who tell the truth) acknowledge that the first-time bikini wax is a horrendous affair.

It's an occasion where you leave your dignity at the door and hobble out afterwards wondering what the hell you were thinking clambering up on that table in the first place.

No matter which camp you fall into, what we do all have in common is that we do, at the very least, remember the occasion.

And here’s why…

1. It was the first time a non-medical person in a non-sexy environment asked us to remove our pants.

I knew it was coming, but I really don’t think I like it.

2. It was the first time we realised we might be a bit more attached to our lady garden than we originally thought.

Stop. Stop. I’ll keep it.

3. It was the first time we truly appreciated what our mothers went through in childbirth.

Actually, maybe this is worse.

4. It was the first time we saw our raised knees actually tremble in fear.

Huh, I didn’t know they could do that.

5. It was the first time we were made to engage in pleasant chit-chat while in excruciating pain.

I know I didn’t have to chat about my holidays with the nurse who stitched me up after I fell down the stairs and smashed through our front door on roller skates.

6. It was the first time we questioned whether someone truly, truly despised us.

Did I do something to this woman in a past life?

7.It was the first time we truly questioned societal values and didn’t have to put it in an essay.

This is barbaric and wrong and I’m only doing it because society insists on it… I think.

8. It was the first time we found staring at a buzzing fluorescent light relatively calming.

The flickering of this light will see me through.

9. It was the first time we wondered if our finger nails could be considered a weapon and would we do time if we used them?

Back off and don’t dare go any lower.

10. It was the first time we realised that we are willing to suffer so that our lady garden looks ‘just-so’.

Great, it’s exactly what I wanted. Super-cute. See you in six weeks.

And the cycle continues…

We devote a lot of time to the hair on our head, right?

We curl it, straighten it, condition it, day in, day out, but it looks like we’ve been concentrating on the wrong hair if this latest craze is anything to go by.

Women have recently been taking to social media in their droves to flaunt their fabulously flamboyant underarms and it’s been getting a very mixed response!

Girls from the pro- body hair camp have dyed their underarm hair in an array of colours and, as a result, have had to face many negative comments including ‘Feminists are gross’. Charming.

But, thankfully, more open-minded individuals have backed these ladies, saying: “Finally! I thought I was the only one!”

Whether you’re for it or against it, you have to admit that a splash of colour on a winter’s morning is always welcome!

It goes without saying that we’re all guilty of a few beauty sins. Whether you’re a little liberal with your foundation every once in a while or you forget to remove your slap after a 14 hour day, none of us are perfect. (Hell, we can't be amazing at EVERYTHING.)

But if we have anything in common it’s probably that we all carry around far too many near-empty bottles and tubes when we should be taking stock of our make-up bag and having a ruthless clear-out every six months or so.

Let's make this our New Year’s beauty resolution; if you’re on board, here’s how to get started.

Mascara

If your mascara is becoming clumpy, it’s not necessarily time for a new one.

Try immersing the tube in a cup of warm water for a few minutes and watch how it reinvigorates itself!

If you’ve purchased a new mascara and yet you’re still carrying around a near-empty tube, then bin it!

You bought the new one for a reason, remember?

Powders

We’ve all had a palette of pressed powder or bronzer shatter on us, but we soldier on and continue to use it on a daily basis despite the fact it coats our clothes and bag in powder, right?

Cut your losses and ditch it immediately. Treat yourself to a new one, you have had a make-up trauma after all!

Brushes

Be honest, how often do you wash them? We all need a little schoolin’ in that department, don’t we?

Experts recommend we wash our brushes once a month in warm, soapy water to avoid germs and infection.  Every thirty days; that’s doable, right?

Nail Polish

Yes, you love the shade, but does it look as good when it’s clumpy and streaky on your nails?

If you’ve tried the age-old trick of adding a little nail polish remover to the actual polish and it’s still not as good as it used be, then admit defeat, bin the bottle and treat yourself to a new shade!

Lipstick

When was the last time you rocked that pearly pink?

If you haven't worn a lipstick in over a year, then chances are it's best days are over, so why not free up some space in your make-up bag for the latest lippie must-have!

Girls, start the new year by taking the time to rummage through your beauty bag and discard the non-essentials, then hit the beauty counter sales to re-stock.

You deserve a few treats for your organisational skills, after all!
