We admit it – we love nothing more than to run out and buy the latest beauty ‘must-have’, but the reality is that we could live without most of these things. Here are the top five beauty products you don’t REALLY need:

Primer
Does applying primer REALLY make a difference to how your make-up looks, or how long it stays on? Some make-up artists even say it can clog your pores! Are you really going to fork out your hard earned cash for that? It’s a pity too because we love the silky feeling it gives our skin!

Toner
Some people may disagree, but you can definitely live without toner. It’s meant to get rid of any residual product after cleansing, but most cleansers come off pretty easily these days. It’s also supposed to close up your pores – nothing a splash of cold water can’t sort out!

Foot cream
Any cream that claims to be for one specific part of your body is lying. A general body lotion is the best way to go – and less clutter in the bathroom!

Shaving cream
All shaving cream does is soften the hairs and make it easier to glide the razor over the skin, something that a blob of hair conditioner can do just as well! A lot of shower gels these days have moisturising qualities too so they would also work. Though we do like the way it foams up!

SPF 100
While it’s important to protect your skin from the sun, forking out for an extra high SPF factor isn’t really necessary. SPF 30 protects you from 97% of UV rays, while SPF 100 is only 2% better at 99% protection. Just make sure to use whatever factor you choose properly by applying it evenly and regularly.

Waking up the morning after the night before can be a bit scary – mascara everywhere, lipstick smeared across your face and foundation patches on your cheeks. While making yourself look somewhat presentable requires a bit of effort, these steps will go a long way to ensure you look alive.

Have a shower
First things first, have a shower. There is nothing better than a shower to perk you up.

Moisturise
Moisturise like your life depended on it. Alcohol will leave your skin dehydrated and you need to hydrate your skin as much as you can.

Light foundation
Don’t pile on the foundation. it will just make you look more tired. A light tinted moisturiser is ideal or even just some concealer to hide blemishes and bags under your eyes.

Work on your lashes
The next thing you need to do is work on your lashes. Curl them with an eye lash curler and then lightly apply mascara. Don’t overdo it though as they will end up looking clumpy and top heavy.

Blusher
Finally, give yourself some much needed colour by sweeping blusher across your cheeks.

Now you are ready to face the world. Well, once your stomach settles down a bit.

We have all heard of the term beauty sleep with many of us thinking it is just an urban myth, but this video shows just how important getting adequate shut-eye actually is.

In the video, a make-up artist asks people how much snooze they get in any given night, they then use make-up to show them what they’ll look like if they keep going this way.

If you are prone to surviving on just a few hours of sleep you will definitely change your mind after looking at this.

When it comes to beauty, there are a few things that you need to remember to do in order to make your make-up go on quicker, last longer and look flawless.

Make sure you know these five make-up tips before you put any cosmetics near your face:

Eyeshadow before foundation
Put your eyeshadow on before your foundation. Powder always falls onto your face but this way you can easily wipe it away without ruining your foundation.

Concealer before foundation
Dab your concealer on areas that need it the most and then put your foundation on. Concealer costs more than foundation so use more concealer and less foundation.

Curl your eyelashes
Before you put on your mascara, make sure you curl your lashes. This way you are sure to have the ultimate curl without using five or six layers of mascara!

Always moisturise
Whether you have oily or dry skin you need to moisturise it. Dab a little on your face before you put on your foundation but make sure it is rubbed in first.

Never forget your blusher
When we say don’t forget your blusher we don’t mean you need to go out looking like a doll. A little swept across your cheeks will bring your whole look together.

Although Buff Make-Up has been around for two years, you may not have heard of them – making them the best-kept beauty secret out there.

The brand began in Hessions salon in Drumcondra and is both Irish owned and run (yey!).  Our beauty expert Odette popped along to their recent beauty event in the Westbury hotel to learn more

As we took our seats, Buff Make-Up’s new creative director Jessica Moulds and the rest of the team made us feel really at ease and welcome – a feeling I’m sure is mirrored in their salons in Drumcondra and Clontarf.

There is a gorgeous array of products in their range, like their coveted HD foundation, their super creamy long lasting lipsticks and highly pigmented eyeshadows that would give MAC a run for their money any day.

During their demonstration, we were walked through two beautiful makeup looks –  a dramatic smoky eye and a soft wedding day look – which really highlighted some of their best-loved items. And while there was a lot to choose from, three products really caught my eye.

The first was their Sheer Glo (€36), a gorgeous light-reflecting, illuminating liquid. It can be worn under or over make-up, comes in three shades and gives a natural glow without looking glittery.

My second must-have is their blush in Orgasmic (€21.50) which is a beautiful pinky-coral shade with a really delicate shimmer. It’s beautifully pigmented without looking over powering on the cheek and is a perfect summery shade that will look great on Irish skin tones.

My final pick is their Dual Powder (€32.00). I love multifunction products that give you the best bang for your buck. This product can be used as a light coverage foundation, swept over the face with a large brush or as a setting powder over liquid foundation. It can even be applied with a damp sponge or stippling brush to create a cream foundation.

If this was your the first time hearing of this brand, trust me it won’t be the last; Buff Make-Up will soon be the number one luxury Irish makeup brand out there in no time.
