beauty mistakes

Model of the moment Kendall Jenner may have grown up surrounded by the image obsessed Kardashians and their army-sized glam squad, but that didn’t stop her from making one of beauty’s most basic mistakes.

Taking to her app to share her biggest beauty regret, the stunning brunette recently revealed that she did what we all did in the noughties and plucked off her eyebrows.

Unfortunately for the reality star, she didn’t even leave behind that thread of hair we once believed were brows of fleek as she removed ALL of her eyebrow hairs.  The actual horror!

She wrote: “When I was younger, on a totally weird whim, I plucked out all of my eyebrows!  Thankfully, they grew back, but my sisters flipped OUT.”

“And, of course, I had to go to camp (Malibu Makos, in case you were wondering) with all the cute surfer boys.  Completely.  Mortifying.”

Luckily for Kendall her brows did eventually grow back and with the help of a brow expert she slowly crafted the impressive set she has today.

She said: “So, yes, they grew back, but it was soooo slowly and in a kind of gross way.  It felt like an eternity.”

“Finally, when I turned 14, I went to the eyebrow aesthetician and started having them professionally done.”

Not to worry Kendall, we’ve all been there.

Yes, make-up is a necessary evil but sometimes we just feel like throwing all our products out the window and being done with it.

Mascara might might our eyes look bigger and our lashes longer, but by GOD is it annoying sometimes. As for liquid eyeliner… don't even get us started.

Here are just a few common beauty struggles every girl has to deal with…

1. Poking yourself in the eye with your mascara wand
Cue one seriously bloodshot eye and enough tears to flood the Sahara.

2. Blinking the second you finish applying mascara
Oh great, it's now all over my cheeks. WONDERFUL.

3. The constant fear that you haven't blended your foundation enough
"I bet I have tide marks, I just know it."

4. Always waking up with eye make-up under your eyes, no matter HOW much time you spent cleansing
Hello, panda eyes.

5. Overdoing it with the dry shampoo and ending up with a grey tint
Oh, you mean you weren't going for the "glamourous granny" look?

6. Realising you haven't washed your conditioner out enough
Ugh. Anna Kendrick knows this pain:

7. Accidentally applying too much blusher/bronzer
There's nothing for it but to start all over again.

8. Smudging your lipstick and instantly looking like you've spent 30 minutes shifting someone
Lipstick. LIPSTICK EVERYWHERE.

With so many different beauty products on the market, each for a different purpose or a different skn type, it can be daunting trying to work out what's right and wrong for you. Are you using the right day cream? Is that primer necessary? How much mascara is too much?

But some of the most common beauty mistakes are simpler than you might think. Here are a few that most of us make on a regular basis and that are easy bad habits to kick!

1. Forgetting to clean your brushes regularly
It's one of the most boring beauty chores, but cleaning your brushes is so important for keeping your skin clear and ensuring your beauty tools do the best job they can. Leaving leftover product on brushes means your skin is more likely to become irritated and break out – never good. Overloading your brushes with different pigment also makes it more difficult to apply your make-up precisely. Try to clean your brushes at least once a week using lukewarm water and a gentle shampoo.

2. Testing foundation on the back of your hand
Our faces and hands receive different amounts of sun exposure, so they are generally different tones. Rather than comparing foundation shades by applying them to the back of your hand, try testing them on your jawline instead.

3. Not taking your make-up off every night
Sure, your make-up will wash off just fine in the shower tomorrow morning, but sleeping in it tonight is still a very bad idea for your poor skin. Even if you're not prone to breakouts, sleeping with your face on causes make-up particles to settle in your pores, enlarging them over time. The key to looking youthful no matter what your age? Start looking after your skin now!

4. Wearing too much foundation
One of the most common mistakes us Irish ladies make is to cake our entire face in foundation even if we only have uneven skin tone on certain parts of our face. Avoid the "orange mask" look and only use foundation on key areas like your T-zone – as long as your foundation is well matched to your skin tone you don't need to apply it all over!

5. Not applying concealer properly
Rather than just swiping concealer under the eyes, apply it in an upside-down triangle with the point touching the apple of each cheek. This reflects light upward, brightening those dark under-eye circles. Stop concealer from fading by setting it with a small amount of translucent powder.

Everyone has their own haircare and skincare routine, but sometimes you can fall into bad habits.

Knowing some of the more common beauty mistakes (and quick fixes for them) is a simple way to ensure you always look flawless and put-together, even if you’ve been strutting your stuff on the dance floor for the last two hours.

Here are some common errors to watch out for…

1. Not prepping your skin for foundation
Heat, wind, humidity and the natural oils released by our skin all work against your foundation, meaning your perfect make up look might not look so sleek by lunchtime. Ensure you use a primer as a good base for any foundation, and if you have oily skin, set your make-up with a powder. For even better staying power, try a weightless makeup setting spray.

2. Neglecting your exfoliant
Exfoliation might seem like something that you only need to do every so often when you have the time, but it should be a regular part of your skin care routine, particularly for your face. It’s the only way to ensure your skin stays smooth, with no dry flaky skin or pesky blackheads. If you find your skin feels tight after exfoliating, use one that is gel-free, and be sure to apply a good layer of moisturiser directly afterwards.

3. Not applying mascara correctly
The easy fix when in a rush is to apply mascara in one long upward stroke. All this does is coat your lashes – your mascara isn’t even getting a chance to show off its lengthening and volumising capabilities! Apply two to three light coats of mascara, wiggling the wand from the base to the tips of your lashes as you go.

4. Letting your lipstick slide off
Lipstick can be a tough one to get the hang of – you can’t just whack it on like lip gloss. Using a matte lip balm or a very light coat of foundation underneath ensures that your lipstick stays in place and doesn’t smudge or feather. It’s also wise to bring some make-up wipes in your bag in case your lip colour does go awry – just wipe off and start again!

5. Allowing your eyeliner to smudge
Applying an eye primer under your eyeliner is a surefire way to keep it in place, but you should also consider the type of liner you’re using. Gel and liquid liners have far more staying power than pencil ones. If you find them difficult to apply and don’t want to make the switch, choose pencil liners that are smudge-proof or waterproof.

6. Applying conditioner all over your hair
An intensive conditioner is such a great quick fix for dry and damaged hair, but apply it sparingly! Hair at the top of your head is new and doesn’t need to be conditioned – using it all over will just weigh your hair down. Instead just use your conditioner on the bottom section of your hair, from where you would tie a ponytail.

7. Matching your eyebrow colour to your hair colour
Brow pencils are the best friend of the patchy eyebrow, but be careful when choosing a shade! Our brows are naturally a couple of shades lighter or darker than our hair. If you have fair or lighter hair, choose a pencil that’s 1 -2 shades darker. If you have dark hair, choose a colour 1 – 2 shades lighter. Easy!

Beauty regimes are important to keep skin clean, clear and blemish-free. Unfortunately, some of us are a bit lacks when it comes to taking care of ourselves.

Here are 5 ways that your beauty regime or lack-thereof is hurting you.

Weekly facials
While you may think you are doing your skin a world of good, you are actually doing more harm. Steam used to open pores can lead to broken capillaries in your face and deep cleansing can lead to scarring if not done properly.

Heavy foundation
Skin needs to be able to breathe and thick, heavy foundation can actually suffocate it. If you are trying to cover up blemishes, use a concealer on these areas and a lighter foundation everywhere else. The caked look was never in anyway.

Rubbing eyes to remove mascara
Well done on taking your make-up off, but rubbing your eyes too much in your quest to remove your mascara is not good. Doing this can cause your lashes to fall out and leave your eyes red and puffy.

Over tweezing
No one likes thick, unruly brows but neither do we like over-plucked ones. Go with your natural brow line and don’t try to change the shape of your eyebrows.

Sharing make-up
Frantically asking someone, anyone, if they have eyeliner you can borrow is a common scene in nightclub bathrooms. However, by doing this you are transferring bacteria from one person to another and sure you never know where it’s been.

Most ladies apply make-up on a regular bases; unfortunately, a few are making mistakes that rather than accentuate their beauty are just making them look a lot older than their actual age.

Here are five beauty mistakes to avoid:

Caking your face in foundation
Too much foundation becomes cakey and settles into any lines an wrinkles you have on your face. Remember to use it sparingly.

Too much under eye concealer
Don’t go overboard when it comes to hiding the bags under your eyes – they will just look worse. Use a light creamy colour and make sure you blend, blend, blend.

Skipping blush
Blush lifts a washed out complexion and blends your make-up together – don’t skip this part.

Mascara on your lower lashes
Avoid this at all costs – it can make your eyes look droopy and leaves your make-up looking too heavy. Stick with an eyeliner pencil.

Bronzer overload
Sweeping bronzer across your whole face will leave you looking like you have a dodgy tan. Use it sparingly and lightly apply it under the cheekbones and along your temples.
