One thing Irish people are known for is the ability to tell a yarn. Think James Joyce, Anne Enright, and of course the LOL-a-minute Marian Keyes, to name just a few.

The publishing landscape is changing by the day – not too long ago the only way to go was a book deal from a traditional publisher, but now thanks to technology, self-publishing your own novel is becoming a viable alternative.

Need some tips to get that bestseller in the bag? We went along to the recent How to Publish Independently with Amazon conference and picked up some awesome tips:

1. Pick a subject you’re genuinely interested in

First things first: choose a subject you actually feel passionate about. Picking something because you think there’s a gap in the market for it, or because it’s ‘hot topic’ means it might not read as authentic as it should, and the odds are it’ll feel more like homework than a labour of love.

2. Plot your story arc

One of the most important considerations in writing a novel is your story arc. Simply put, it’s the story you tell from the beginning (the trigger or event) to the rising action, to the climax, to the resolution. And you don’t necessarily have to plot it scene-by-scene – according to author Hazel Gaynor, some writers have a skeleton of a story before they begin, and others want to see where it takes them naturally.

3. Download Scrivener

Scrivener is a pretty genius tool that lets you outline and structure your story with ease. Part word processor, part project management tool, it lets you drag and drop scenes and ideas, take notes, and view your research as you write.

4. Start with a bang

People often decide to read a book based on the first few pages, so make your opening scene interesting enough to pull people in. Ask yourself the question: is this something that would grab ME?

5. Make mistakes in your first draft

You should be under zero pressure or restrictions when your write your first draft. This is the most free and creative part of the process, so just write away with wild abandon and focus on getting your story down. Don’t worry about spelling, grammar and tying up loose ends – that’s what your second, third and maybe even fourth drafts are for.

6. Consider hiring a professional editor

In the second and third drafts you’ll work on structure, inconsistencies and spelling and grammar. However, getting a professional editor on board to go over story, plot, characterisation, dialogue and point of view is definitely something to consider. “Don’t worry about ‘meddling’,” says author and editor Alison Walsh. “It’s about making it the best it can be. We don’t want to rewrite it. It’s about your work, your voice, we just help get the story across.”

7. Build an author platform

If you decide to go down the self-publishing route, you will be author, marketer, publicist and businessperson, so it’s important to get yourself out there. Remember, Fifty Shades started out as a blog! So start an author blog (there are heaps of fab free themes on WordPress and Wix), get yourself on social media, and engage with fellow writers. “Do up a press release, contact people in newspapers and don’t go for the hard sell – engage people with your genuine passion,” advises author LG Ross.

8. Upload your finished novel

Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing – or KDP – is a portal to set your novel live to a paying audience. The big differences between KDP and traditional publishing are that you get to keep all the rights to your novel, and you can also update the document if there are any typos. Uploading your work using the tool is actually pretty easy; there’s a handy step-by-step guide you can follow on getting started here.

Go forth and conquer!

She’s a successful actress, outspoken feminist and proud bookworm, but did you know Emma Watson is also a total sweetheart?

The Harry Potter star has surprised fans with handwritten notes hidden inside copies of Maya Angelou’s autobiography, Mom & Me & Mom, which she placed along the sides of escalators in a London tube station.

The 26-year-old took to Facebook last night to share a video of herself distributing the books in a move which has led fans to call her “the best human in the world”.

Some lucky commuters have already shared news of their finds online.

Pictures of the special notes reveal Emma’s hope that the books will be left in tube carriages once their finders have finished with them so that they can then be read by other passengers.

It looks like it’s still not time to say goodbye to Harry Potter and his wizarding friends as JK Rowling has announced the story isn’t finished yet.

With three more books to be written this year, Amazon have released the descriptions of the tales.

Set to be released as e-books, the three newest editions to the Harry Potter universe will explore the history of Hogwarts as well as give us more of an insight into some our favourite HP characters.

“J.K. Rowling’s writing in these collections reveals intricate details of her characters’ lives, their histories, as well as her inspiration,” Pottermore chief executive Susan Jurevics said in a statement.

The highly anticipated “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” is the first of three spin-off movies which is due to be released in November.

We always suspected that despite her petite-frame, Amy Huberman is one seriously tough-cookie.

And she'll be putting that to the test tomorrow: the 35-year-old actress is filming her brand-new action flick in the capital… and things are about to get seriously feisty.

Lining up alongside an all-star Irish cast – although the gorgeous male lead is an Englishman – Amy confirmed in conversation with SHEmazing! that she will play a 'goodie' in the forthcoming feature-length film.

With a working title of The Fixer, the Dubliner added that her former rugby player husband didn't try and offer up any combat tips.

"He finds the whole thing quite funny I think," she laughed.

"I've never done an action film before," she also admitted. "It's an Irish production, though initially I didn't know I'd actually be filming here.

"I only have one fight scene – it's tomorrow – so thankfully I'm not bruised today.

"We choreographed the whole thing the other day… and I'll be fighting a fella too!"

However, Ms Huberman added with a sigh of relief: "My stunt double will take any of the major hits, which is fine by me."

The mum-of-two – who has also penned several successful novels – was on hand this afternoon to launch the third annual Bord Gáis Energy Student Theatre Awards.

She will be on the judging panel for 2016, and the accolades aim to recognise drama in primary (3rd to 6th classes) and secondary schools.

With a total of 12 categories ranging from best overall school musical to best set design, the deadline for this year’s competition is Friday January 29.

"This is a fantastic competition which recognises all the hard work and effort that students, teachers and parents are putting into schools drama around Ireland," Amy explained.

"It’s a great platform for anyone wanting to participate in the arts and I would have absolutely loved to have taken part in something like this when I was a student."

And in the meantime, Ms Huberman furthermore told SHEmazing! that Bolt, the screenplay she is penning based on her second novel I Wished For You, is very nearly finished.

"We don't have a cast just yet," she admitted, "but it will be an Irish cast and yes, I do have my dream line-up in mind!"

From the Philosopher's Stone to the Deathly Hallows, the Harry Potter books have enthralled readers since the very first one was released back in 1997.

By 2007, JK Rowling had concluded her seven-part literary series – and millions of enthusiasts have been desperate for further instalments ever since.

The Scottish author last year announced that she would pen a spin-off play, The Cursed Child, but has otherwise been cautious about implying that the books themselves are anything less than done and dusted.

"I’m not going to say I won’t. I don’t think I will… I feel I am done, but you never know," she said back in 2010.

Such ambiguity is enough to fuel hope too – and many woke this morning to discover that #newHarryPotterbooks was trending globally on Twitter. It was a hashtag which, understandably, sent fans into total meltdown.

Alas, sadly Ms Rowling didn't make any sort of surprise statement this morning – rather the #newHarryPotterbooks movement was kicked-off by Midnight, a late night Comedy Central game show hosted by Chris Hardwick.

The show had asked Twitter users to come up with alternative Harry Potter titles… and evidently it REALLY took off.

In the aftermath, however, many were less than impressed when they discovered that they'd inadvertently been dubbed.

And – inevitably – the odd tongue-in-cheek response also duly followed.

Although, fans could be forgiven for getting their hopes up: JK Rowling often takes to social media to promote new material. She also regularly answers questions from readers via Twitter.

She furthermore used to platform to reveal details of the three forthcoming Newt Scamander spin-off films she has written for Warner online.

Eddie Redmayne, who plays the lead in the Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them trilogy, based on a Hogwarts text book read by Harry, is currently filming the first of the films, which is due out on 16 November 2016.

Ms Rowling is due to publish the third in a crime series written under the pen name Robert Galbraith this October.

Ah James Franco, one of our must favourite celebs and also the most likely to make us whisper ‘wtf, James?’ every now and then.

Did you know though, that not only is he quite the accomplished actor and one fraction of a genetically blessed family, but he is also now an author?

How do I get so many followers? I just post photos with little dogs. #nacho

A photo posted by James Franco (@jamesfrancotv) on

We’re not just talking about his possibly fictional possibly real life accounts of his adventures with Lindsay Lohan, Bungalow 89, either. James has now turned his attention, and affections apparently towards none of other than Lana del Ray.

The 37-year old has put together a short book about his friend/muse Lana titled: Flip-Side: Real and Imaginary Conversations with Lana del Rey. It is 100 pages long, and published by Random House.

The book was co-written with photographer David Shields, who is a New York Times best-selling author and has previously collaborated with James.

If you thought this was a little spontaneous then let us remind you it is not the first time James has found himself inspired by the Summertime Sadness singer. In September 2014 he wrote a poetic ode to the 30-year old called Shades of Cool for V Magazine.

He is apparently drawn to her unapologetically “weird” personality, naturally.

"The only difference between Lana and me is her haunting voice. That carries everything. The voice is the central axle around which the spokes of everything else extend," he wrote in the 2014 piece.

His new book is due to be released in March 2016, and we wait in curiosity until then to find out what the 100-page tribute will include.

In the meantime feel free to examine some mildly blurry polaroid’s of the duo which appear on the book’s cover. We can’t wait.

Thirsty Thursday became a trend not so long ago, and now it’s been surpassed by Grey Thursday.

Just when you thought it couldn’t get any bigger, 50 Shades Of Grey has come back, again. A retelling of the trilogy from Christian Grey’s perspective is exactly what we wanted heading into the weekend.

The publishing phenomenon has sold 125million copies worldwide already, and has also become a film series. Anastasia and Christian’s relationship is now being told “in Christian’s own words, and through his thoughts, reflections and dreams”.

Yes E.L James has somehow managed to transform a Twilight fanfiction inspired smut trilogy into a lucrative industry.

Today not only marks the release of the hotly-anticipated new novel, but the date was also chosen by the author herself as it marks Christian’s birthday. Nice.

The fictional seducer and bondage aficionado has, naturally, caused quite the stir online today. Once people managed to get through the rather wordy preamble, they’ve got an awful lot Grey waiting for them.

Twitter users couldn’t help themselves:

Just in case you weren’t one of the die-hard fans who had the novel sent to their E-readers at midnight (how could you not?), we’ve gathered up some Christian’s best parts, no pun intended, honestly.

First of all, it’s important to note that while poor Anastasia’s point of view was given the dull numerical chapter titles, Mr Grey gets a bit more specific with his dates. So, to surmise Christian is not only a billionaire sex god, he’s also really good at keeping a diary, of course.

"'Mr Grey.' His handshake is limp, like his hair. Asshole. 'Wait up – not the Christian Grey? Of Grey Enterprises Holdings?' Yeah, that's me, you prick.

“Her words travel directly to my d***, passing ‘Go’ on the way. F***.”

"Absentmindedly, she wipes a crumb from the corner of her lips and into her mouth and sucks on her finger. My c*** twitches in response. What am I, fourteen?"

“This calls for – what did she call them? SHOUTY CAPITALS.”

"She has a fresh, wholesome fragrance that reminds me of my grandfather’s apple orchard."

"I remember her telling me to keep still and tugging my pubic hair while she was sitting astride me, naked. The thought is arousing."

"Keeping my eyes on hers, I pop an olive into my mouth and lick my index finger. Her eyes grow wider and darker."

"Her hair is beautiful. Lush. Long. Thick. Idly, I wonder what it would be like to braid."

"I cannot believe she's said that out loud! Ironically, the question even my own family will not ask. How dare she!

"I have a sudden urge to drag her out of her seat, bend her over my knee, spank her, and then f*** her over my desk with her hands tied behind her back. That would answer her ridiculous question."

"'This is my favorite tea,' she says, and I revise my mental note that it's Twinings English Breakfast tea she likes. I watch her dunk the teabag in the teapot. It's an elaborate and messy spectacle.

"She fishes it out almost immediately and places the used teabag on her saucer.

"My mouth is twitching with my amusement. As she tells me she likes her tea weak and black, for a moment I think she's describing what she likes in a man. Get a grip, Grey. She's talking about tea."
