Ever heard the claim that dog owners can actually resemble their canine companions?

Well turns out the same could actually be true for humans and their partners.

In general, long-term couples tend to develop similar mannerisms and facial expressions. It’s cute, most of the time.

But have you ever looked at your partner and thought ‘actually, dya know what, we look really alike’?

You only have to look at any Hollywood red carpet to see plenty examples of the phenomenon.

Take Jessica Alba and her husband Cash Warren for example.

Or LeAnn Rimes and her husband, Eddie Cibrian. 

And Courtney Cox and Snow Patrol's Johnny McDaid.

Well, turns out, if you do happen to share some physical attributes with your significant other, you guys could actually have similar genes.

Yep.  

Research conducted at universities in Pennsylvania, California and Boston found that people will most likely marry someone with the same ancestry.

Results of the study, published in PLOS Genetics, concluded that people of Northern European, Southern European and Ashkenazi Jewish descent are the worst offenders.

But thankfully, after studying families over three generations, researchers found that the tendency to hook up with someone we share great-great-great grandparents with, has declined over time.

From broken engagements to affairs with the nanny, it's been a trying year for celebrity romances.

First, our little hearts were shattered by Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield calling off their oh-so adorable relationship. But before we even had time to re-adjust, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner pulled the plug on their marriage after a massive TEN years together.

It's a wonder we have any faith left in relationships at all. Thank God for Kim and Kanye, eh?

Here are just some of the celebrity break-ups that had us shaking our heads in disbelief…

1. Zayn Malik and Perrie Edwards
After being snapped with his arm around another woman in Thailand, Zayn abandoned the One Direction tour to fly home to his fiancée Perrie for crisis talks. But within weeks he had quit both the band AND his engagement. He's since moved on with Gigi Hadid, of course, which we doubt Perrie's too happy about.

 

2. Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick
​It certainly wasn't the most perfect of celeb relationships, but these two had serious staying power, having made it through nine years with various trips to rehab (Scott), constant attention from E! cameras (Kourtney) and three kids. Since the split, Kourtney has been letting Scott back into her life, but it remains to be seen whether they'll reunite.

 

3. Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner
In what was possibly the most jaw-dropping celebrity moment of the year, Ben and Jen called time on their ten-year marriage, before flying off to the Bahamas… together. Then, of course, it transpired that Ben had been dating the family nanny. Well, he did say marriage was "hard work" during his 2013 Oscar acceptance speech.

 

4. Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield
We still can't believe these two are no more. They split briefly in February 2015, only to reunite a few months on and split again just three months ago. And with that, our faith in love was killed forever.

 

5. Louis Tomlinson and Eleanor Calder
​Within weeks of his split from Eleanor last spring, Louis began seeing LA-based stylist Briana Jungwirth. He's no longer dating Bri, but the pair are in fact expecting a child together. Not the smoothest ending to Louis and Eleanor's four-year pairing.

 

6. Liam Payne and Sophia Smith
Another One Direction romance that ended with a bang. We hoped Liam and Sophia might last the distance, but the 1D star admitted in November that their split was the right choice, despite him being "absolutely devastated." Maybe they'll get back together now that 1D have kicked off their hiatus? *crosses fingers*

 

7. Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale
​First, Blake Shelton splits from Miranda Lambert. Then, Gwen splits from Gavin. And within weeks, Blake and Gwen promptly start dating. Oh, the rollercoaster world of celebrity romance.

 

8. Vogue Williams and Brian McFadden
​Despite having split back in July after two years of marriage, Brian and Vogue seem as pally as ever, even remaining in their London home together for three months after breaking up. Another couple we *kinda* hope might re-kindle their flame.

 

9. Courteney Cox and Johnny McDaid
​These two were set to descend on Ashford Castle in Co Mayo for the celebrity wedding of the year, before calling their engagement off just last month. According to some sources, Snow Patrol rocker Johnny wanted to make a move to the UK, but Courteney couldn't bear to say farewell to her life in Malibu.

The world of celebrity romances – it giveth, and it taketh away.

Yes, we're still a bit devo that Zayn and Perrie's engagement is no more, but we're equally THRILLED about the bizarre pairing that is Zayn and Gigi Hadid.

2015 has most definitely been a year of bewildering celebrity relationships, and they just kept on coming as the year wore on. No-one ever said love was straightforward, did they?

Without further ado, here are some of our favourite (and most unexpected) star-studded romances from the last 12 months…

1. Taylor Swift and Calvin Harris
We heart these two purely because they look so damn good in photos together. They first met back in February, and seem to be going strong… although we must note it's been over a month since they were last seen together in public.

 

2. Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik
We're still reeling from this one, a romance which kicked off just a few short weeks after Gigi's split from Joe Jonas. We just hope Zayn doesn't pop the question again too soon. *Cough* Perrie Edwards *cough*

 

3. Charlotte Crosby and Gary Beadle
They're most definitely the Romeo and Juliet of the Geordie Shore house, and now they seem to be an item for real. Yep, these two were spotted smooching in various locations across London over the last few weeks. Publicity stunt? Well, Charlotte does have a new fitness DVD coming out…

 

4. Cara Delevingne and St Vincent
"I think that being in love with my girlfriend is a big part of why I'm feeling so happy with who I am these days," Cara told Vogue back in June, as hearts melted all over the world. We love these two… and their co-ordinated couple style is always on point.

 

5. Selena Gomez and Niall Horan
This A-list duo have yet to confirm anything is going on between them – indeed, Selena is still insisting they're 'just friends' – but according to various sources the romance is well and truly blossoming. Things went public when they were reportedly spotted kissing at Jenna Dewan Tatum's birthday party earlier this month.

 

6. Steve-O and Stacey Solomon
Yes, these two have already called it quits but they still get a mention for the sheer 'WTF' nature of their relationship. Jackass frontman Steve-O met Stacey while they were both working on The Jump, a ski reality show for Channel 5. Love flourished in the snowy mountains, and the couple tried their hand at an LA/UK romance for a while before ending things.

 

7. Jennifer Lawrence and Liam Hemsworth
Yup, Katniss and Gale are apparently a couple IRL. We're still picking our jaws up off the floor after that revelation, though it's another relationship that has yet to be fully confirmed. However the pair were spotted looking very touchy-feely at dinner together in early December. All that on-screen chemistry had to come from somewhere.

From minor hook-ups (Selena Gomez and Orlando Bloom anyone?) to full scale relationship chaos (that award goes to Perrie and Zayn, for sure), we consider ourselves pretty well-versed in celebrity relationship history.

But not every rendez-vous is common knowledge – in fact, there are more than a few star-studded romances that totally passed us by.

Here are just 11 couples you (probably) never knew dated…

1. Ryan Reynolds and Alanis Morrisette

Even though you may have figured Ryan had a bit of a thing for blondes (Scarlett and Blake, hello!), it turns out that one of our favourite Hollywood heartthrobs was in fact with a certain talented brunette.

Ryan and Alanis dated for over four years and at one point were even ENGAGED. They called off the entire thing in 2007.

2. Matthew McConaughey and Janet Jackson

Back when Matthew was Oscar-less and way before he was starring in rom coms with J-Lo, he was also briefly courting a certain Jackson. No, not Michael unfortunately but the one and only Janet whom he met at the Grammys in 2002.

Though Matthew never admitted to the pairing, Janet described the romance as 'a brief fling,' a very common occurrence in Hollywood it seems.

3. Jared Leto and Cameron Diaz

Another Oscar winner, the multi-talented (and irresistibly delicious) Jared dated Hollywood it-girl Cameron for FOUR YEARS. How did we not know this?

The gorgeous couple were together from 1999.

4. Sofia Vergara and Enrique Iglesias

We can only fathom the Latin spice involved in this relationship. Before becoming famous in her own right with Modern Family, Sofia was MOST famous for dating the Spanish heartthrob.

5. Helen Mirren and Liam Neeson

Yep, our very own Liam was smitten with cinematic royalty back in the 1980’s. Apparently having met on the set of the film, Excalibar, they fell madly in love.

Liam later told CBS News: “Oh my God. Can you imagine riding horses in shiny suits of armour, having sword fights and stuff, and you’re falling in love with Helen Mirren? It doesn’t get any better than that.” We can’t! So cute!

6. Vanessa Hudgens and Josh Hutcherson

When we think of Vanessa’s dating exploits, we salivate to think of Zac Efron and her current beau Austin Butler. Somehow we can’t quite fit the Hunger Games star Josh into the mix.

Having apparently met on the set of Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, it doesn’t seem that this romance ended amicably. Speaking to Seventeen Magazine in 2013, Josh said: “I think getting broken up with is worse than breaking up with somebody. For me it hurts more when you’re ready for something to keep going and the other person isn’t.” Ouch.

7. Mischa Barton and Jamie Dornan

Wait, what? How did these two even meet? Our favourite Northern Irish eye candy of 50 Shades of Grey fame apparently dated Marissa from the O.C. Yep apparently these two had a proper, albeit brief, romance back in 2007.

8. Simon Cowell and Carmen Electra

Inside sources have said that these two were mad about each other at one point back in 2012 .

9. Sandra Bullock and Ryan Gosling

Before The Notebook and before Rachel McAdams, there was Sandra. Dating for an entire year, Sandra was 16 years older than the promising actor.

He apparently still counts her among his best girlfriends ever. Awh! Wait, but how many have you had Ryan?

10. Britney Spears and Colin Farrell

Ah, yet another of our famous exports doing the rounds in Hollywood. Alleged to have dated back in 2003, Britney quickly brushed off the rumours.

Cheeky chappie Colin even reportedly sent Brit a t-shirt saying “I slept with Colin Farrell and all I got was this lousy t-shirt.” We can’t imagine the two remained friends…

11. Justin Timberlake and Fergie

Way back in 1996, before double denim and Britney, a fresh faced 16 year old Justin had a brief romance with the then 23 year old Fergie.

Though the romance failed, the duo remained amicable following their split.

The Blink 182 drummer has opened about their relationship after a photograph of the pair shared on social media sparked massive speculation about their romance.

The rocker told E! News: "We actually share a lot of the same tastes in music. Little did I know, she likes punk rock a lot, I love that. I was raised on it, you know."

Travis split from his wife Shanna Moakler in 2009 after five years of marriage. The pair have two children together, Landon, 11, and Alabama, 9.

A representative for Travis has apparently told TMZ that the pair are an item despite only meeting in LA two weeks ago.

The Mirror reports a source saying, "Rita sought him out and gave him her info. They have been together every day since."

Travis also told E! that both he and Rita, 24, are huge fans of Halloween, so does this mean they might be going the matching route when it comes to costumes?

The 39-year old seemed pretty excited about the prospect when he told reporters, “Possibly, yeah!"

Travis previously dated a UFC ring girl, Arianna Celeste after he and Shanna’s highly publicized divorce.

Meanwhile, Rita has been sparking plenty of rumours about her love life since she and Ricky Hilfiger, son of Tommy, broke up in July.

They had been together for a year.

We have been big fans of Will Smith for some time now, he kind of won us over way back when he was still the Fresh Prince and parachte pants were a definite trend. 

People all over the internet feel even more in love with him this week however when he took to social media to post a very sweet tribute to his wife Jada on her birthday. 

He shared a very cute throwback snap of the pair as she turned 44 and the caption that came with it made people melt instantly:

“This was taken at your mom’s house 20 years ago. That’s a long time ago!!! So I decided to do some math… I have sung happy birthday to you 20 times and I have bought you 19 birthday presents (I was mad that one year).

“I have watched you blow out 693 candles (737 after tonite). I’ve told you “I love you” at least 8,285 times. And of the nearly 3.96 billion women on the planet – there is only one that I want to spend the rest of my life with.”

The pair have been married since 1997 and have to kids, Willow and Jaden. 

Of late the duo have been hit by many claims that their marriage is headed for divorce. In August Will announced to the public with a special message that he and Jada were not going to be separating and that the pair were sick of the speculation surrounding their family:

Rihanna has found herself linked with several different famous faces over the last number of months.

The Umbrella singer has not confirmed any of the rumour surrounding her relationship status aside from calling out one NBA player who claimed they were item. They were not.

Now TMZ is reporting that anyone who thought Rihanna and rapper Travis Scott were the latest celebrity couple may not have been wrong. The pair have been rumoured to be an item since the beginning of September according to Hollywood Life things between the duo are getting serious.

A source claims that Riri thinks “he is super sexy and the right amount of bad boy that she is attracted to. She is having fun with him.”

She also thinks he is a “rapping genius” and a “super stylish guy to be around” so she is really enjoying his company.

Not surprising then that the pair were spotted at one of the many parties taking place in NYC for Fashion Week.

The pair were at the New York Edition Hotel certainly looked like a couple as they met with Justin Timberlake. Their PDA filled escapades were captured by paparazzi at the party as they got nice and cozy at the DJ booth.

They also threw some serious shapes on the dancefloor when Bitch Better Have My Money was played. There was a lot of fist pumping happening.

Lauren Hutton and Spencer Matthews have split up. The duo, who began dating last August had sparked rumours of a break-up after it became clear they were under some strain during the latest Made In Chelsea series.

Initially Lauren had dismissed the rumours they were no longer a couple when she shared a very intimate photo on Instagram this week.

Sharing a tender moment between her and Spencer with her almost 200,000 followers she captioned the snap “spoons”.

However, despite this evidence to solidify their relationship status, a representative for Spencer has said that he is no longer in a relationship:

OK! Magazine writes that while Lauren is yet to comment on the news but she did reveal recently that the dup were not involved in the show’s LA-based series because of Spencer’s less than committed ways.

She confirmed that the reality TV star had cheated on her. After a difficult series, one where Spencer was on the receiving end of another drink in the face, they opted to stay at home and work on their relationship.

She said that while the scandal hurt her, she believed it made them stronger as a couple:

"It would be sad if we ever did end because we're really beautiful together."

After 18 years together and months of speculation it has been confirmed that John Hamm and Jennifer Westfeldt has broken up.

The pair released a statement on Monday that confirmed the rumours of their separation but did not provide any details of why they were breaking up.

'With great sadness, we have decided to separate, after 18 years of love and shared history,' the couple said in the joint statement. 

'We will continue to be supportive of each other in every way possible moving forward.”

44-year old John and 45-year old Jennifer who is both an actress and screenwriter have been together since 1997; they never married and have no children together.

In April of this year the pair were hit by rumours of their relationship ending when John entered a rehab facility for alcoholism. The news, originally reported by TMZ, was confirmed by the pair’s publicist before the final season Mad Men aired in the U.S

In the past John has admitted that playing the role of troubled Don Draper has taken a toll on him mentally:

“People ask, 'What's the difference between you and Don?' Look, I drink, I get drunk. I'm not immune to that.

'And (creator) Matt (Weiner) will tell you, the darkness in Don has not abated,” he told Variety earlier this year.

He added that while he loved his work and his co-stars, “it can be hard on you as a person.”

One of the most private people in Hollywood may just accidentally made a huge revelation about her private life.

According to reports, Kristen Stewart may have let slip that she and Alicia Cargile are actually married. Or at least considering taking their relationship to the next level in the future.

In late August the actress, 25, attended the premiere for American Ultra with former co-star Taylor Lautner. However, reports are saying that at the after party, she told guests “I miss my wife!”

OK! Magazine reports an insider as saying that they overheard the actress referring to her assistant Alicia as her wife then apparently “ran off to celebrate with friends and co-stars.”

The ‘eyewitness’ has insinuated that Kristen was thoroughly enjoying herself at the after party with friends and gave a “quirky smile and coyly said ‘thanks!’” when they congratulated her on her marriage.

Hollywood Life reports that friends of the star are not that surprised at her secretly marrying as she has referred to Alicia, 23, as ‘the One’, in the past.

Neither of the stars are fans of the media spotlight, which Kristen has been known to avoid, especially since her very public break up with fellow Twilight alum Robert Pattinson.

Apparently, Alicia, whom is Kristen is rumoured to be dating since January of this year, feels the same way and would rather not be getting the attention of the press.

They’ve only been together for a few months but apparently these two love birds are already talking about marriage.

Taylor Swift, 25, and Calvin Harris, 31 (aka Taylvin), met and got together in February and have since been showcasing their loved-up status as a twosome all over social media.

Taylor’s celebrity filled party last weekend seemed to be just another excuse for her and beau, and her beau’s abs, to appear on our Instagram feeds seeming completely smitten.

According to Reveal magazine the two are taking their relationship to the next level by planning their future together.

A source told the publication that despite being worth a total of €130m, neither wants to sign a prenuptial agreement, but they are at least happy to talk honeymoons.

Apparently the two are big adventure seekers, as the source said they “would love to take a camper van and disappear either in Europe or North America for a while."

They’ve also apparently been discussing serious details about the Big Day. Taylor apparently “would love a big wedding at home but she loved Scotland and could be persuaded to do it there, especially as her family can travel more than his extended family can."

Things certainly seems to be escalating rather quickly for the pair.

There are reports, however, that Taylor’s family may not be so on-board with her not wishing to sign a pre-nup (fair enough really – she's worth at least twice what he is).

Taylvin have even just recently surpassed megastars Beyoncé and Jay-Z are the world’s most powerful couple.

The source says that Tay-Tay and Mr Harris both “know what they want from the future” so apparently “pre-nups and marriage came up in the conversation almost straight away”.

There hasn’t been any comment from reps for either of the stars on the story, so maybe we might be getting our hopes up; but could you imagine the invite list for that wedding?

It’s nice to know then even the super famous are able to take joke like the rest of us. Nick Cannon, 34, obviously doesn’t want us to think he’s sitting around crying about his estranged wife Mariah Carey.

The America’s Got Talent host posted some funny memes on his Instagram account, apparently not wanting to seem bitter about spending the American holiday weekend alone.

Another was an image of a couple in front of fireworks compared to a solo Kanye West drinking from a bottle. The memes are pretty familiar, but we can’t say we expected  Nick to be posting them while his former love is all over social media with her new BF.

Nick has always had a sense of humour though. He was a comedian for a while after all…

Meanwhile, Mariah seems to thoroughly enjoying her new romance with billionaire boyfriend James Packer.

The couple have recently been spotted at some very lavish parties and looking positively smitten as they strolled hand-in-hand on the beach in Spain.

James, who is Australia’s fourth richest man, apparently, had invited the singer to sail around the Mediterranean along with Mariah and Nick’s four-year old twins Moroccan and Monroe.

So it seems Nick is getting used to his single status then. We’re just happy he’s found “the One” (himself) to keep him company.

The couple’s split is rumoured to have prompted Nick to write a tell-all book about their life together after Mariah reportedly refused to meet Nick’s demands of an almost €27 million divorce settlement.
