christmas movies

The office is closed, the fire is lit, there's a glass of wine with your name on it and a TV just waiting to be watched.

That's right, the Christmas holidays are just around the corner, and with that, it's about time we start planning how what we're going to watch during all those cosy evenings spent by the fire.

After all, it wouldn't be Christmas if we didn't watch an unholy amount of cheesy films, right?

Here's our top picks:

1. Elf

One of our all time favourites!

Nothing fills us with the joys of Christmas quite like a watching Buddy The Elf attempt to navigate the Big Apple and find his birth father, Walter Hobbs.

His child-like behaviour and joyous attitude may be a little over the top for the business types of NYC, but even the most cynical among us are no match for his Christmas spirit.

2. The Santa Clause

Growing up in 1990's Ireland, three things heralded the arrival of Christmas over all others – 1. The Late Late Toy Show (obviously), 2. Seeing the Coca-cola ad on TV for the first time, and 3. Staying up late to watch what is arguably Tim Allen's greatest performance on RTÉ

Sure, the story starts off on a bit of grim note, but seeing Scott (aka the new Santa Clause) rise to the occasion for the sake of his son reminds us what Christmas is all about.

3. Love Actually

Is it just us, or is it hard to believe that Richard Curtis' festive masterpiece is 14-years-old?

Love Actually tells ten interweaving stories of love around Christmas time, and has cemented itself as a holiday tradition in many households across the country.

Cry, laugh and ask what love actually is with an all-star cast featuring Hugh Grant, Liam Neeson, Colin Firth, Kiera Knightley, Emma Thompson and Alan Rickman, to name just a few.

4. The Holiday

A modern classic that is often overshadowed by other festive favourites.

Starring Cameron Diaz, Jude Law, Kate Winslet and Jack Black, this Yueltide romantic comedy tells the story of two women who embark on a house exchange after shortcomings in their love lives leave them yearning for change.

A tale full of love, loss and warm fuzzy feelings – everything we look for in a Christmas comedy.

5. Home Alone

No Christmas movie list would be complete without a visit to the McCallister's house.

Sure, child negligence doesn't exactly scream Christmas spirit, but Macaulay Culkin's charming performance makes this a must-watch ever single year.

Admit it, you pretty much know the script off by heart at this stage.

6. The Nightmare Before Christmas

Tim Burton's fantastical animation is unique in that it can be enjoyed at Halloween and Christmas time alike.

And while most people generally wouldn't associate one with the other, The Nightmare Before Christmas manages to strike the perfect balance between light and dark.

A Christmas film even the biggest scrooges can get on board with – it's win win!

7. About A Boy

Not the most traditional of Christmas films, but hey, when the main character lives off the royalties of song called Santa's Super Sleigh, we're willing to make an exception.

The story follows the unlikely friendship between a wealthy bachelor and a bullied schoolboy as they gain a new appreciation for life and the importance of family.

And if that doesn't scream Christmas time, we don't know what does.

When we think of classic Christmas movies, most of them were made before we were even born.

So, we never got to witness them on their original release, never mind in the actual cinema.

However, this wasn't for lack of wanting to, and luckily one cinema is making that happen.

Omniplex Cinemas #BringItBack Christmas series is kicking off in the months of November and December, bringing iconic Christmas flicks to the big screen.

The start off the festivities, Omniplex will be showing the 1984 comedy fantasy Gremlins on Monday, November 27.

Miracle on 34th Street will follow on the first Monday in December, with Die Hard following on Monday, December 11.

A complete classic, Home Alone will then light up the silver screen on December 18.

The golden oldie flicks will be made all the better thanks to modern, updated cinematic technology.

#BringItBack will be happening every Monday night at 7.30PM in Rathmines Dublin, Cork, Wexford, Tralee, Limerick, Dundalk, Lisburn, Craigavon and Dundonald.

We'll see you there, popcorn in hand.

Gone are the days when we'd wait with bated breath for the Christmas RTÉ Guide to find out what we'd be settling down to on TV that year.

Now, the listings are announced online too, and if you don't find the film you're looking for, well, there's always box sets, Netflix and more box sets.

Luckily though, our favourite Irish TV channels have come up trumps this year, and we reckon we'll be glued to the telly on those chilly Christmas nights.

Here's what you can look forward to…

Brand New Movies

Gravity, RTÉ One, Christmas Eve

Oz The Great & Powerful, RTÉ One, Christmas Day

Anchorman 2, RTÉ2

Lincoln, RTÉ One, St Stephen's Day

Les Miserables, RTÉ One, St Stephen's Day

One Direction: This Is Us, RTÉ2

The Classics

Home Alone 2, RTÉ One

Up, RTÉ One

The Commitments, TV3

And a special mention…

Queen Of Ireland Christmas Message, Christmas Day, TV3

Ireland's honourary Queen of Ireland will take to our screens on Christmas Day afternoon to share her vision of 2016 with us. Even though it's long before the watershed we reckon there'll be a few risqué jokes in there. It is Panti Bliss after all.

Telling someone that you’re really not into Christmas movies is almost like admitting that chocolate or pizza just isn’t your bag. It can be, in other words, completely and utterly shocking.

But fear not, we have a list of reasons why it’s completely OK to dislike festive flicks.

The next time you’re faced with a sea of gobsmacked expressions because you’ve never watched Elf or seen Miracle on 34th Street, just reel out the following reasons for your questionable attitude and watch people slowly come around to your way of thinking.

1. Perfect family vs. your family

Who wants to endure two hours of some perfect family enjoying the holiday season when your own family struggle to make it through Christmas breakfast without a scuffle?

2. Movie weather vs. real weather

Why must we watch that same perfect family enjoy classic Christmas activities like sleighing and snowball fighting when our dad just skulled himself on the icy back steps and crashed head first into the dog’s kennel?

3. Film fights vs. real fights

Who needs to be duped into thinking that Christmas fights within the family can be rectified with a little comedy and a lot of good cheer when really, we all know that there was NO coming back from our family fight on Christmas Day 2005. We'd rather not talk about it, thanks.

4. Movie soundtrack vs. your soundtrack

Who needs to see a neighbourhood who gets to experience Christmas carols, church bells and neighbourly well wishes when all WE get is a dodgy Christmas number one, a non-stop burglar alarm and the annual screaming match in the Queen Vic.

5. Their presents vs. your presents.

How is it fair that they get perfectly wrapped gifts sitting under an enormous Christmas tree, and all WE get is a voucher given to us by a hungover and disgruntled sibling who’d rather keep it for themselves?

If anyone needs us, we'll be watching Hostel.

Christmas is made for movies. It's when everyone is at home, the fire is on, the kettle is always hot and the TV plays all our favourite festive movies on repeat!

Here are our favourite scenes:

1. Love Actually
When Mark turns up and declares his love for Juliet…sob

2. Home Alone
When Kevin's mom finally makes it home to her little boy – grab the tissues!

3. Bridget Jones' Diary
When Bridget chases Mark Darcy and she's wearing no pants and they have an epic kiss in the snow

4. Miracle on 34th Street
When Santa signs with the adorable little girl after her mom tells him she is deaf

6. Elf
When Buddy meets the store manager and he tells him Santa is coming

7. Sleepless in Seattle
Just when you think all is lost – little Jonah forgets his bag on top of the Empire State building

8. The Santa Clause
Scott's visit to the doctor is always a classic

9. It's A Wonderful Life
Most of this film is just a sobfest – a beautiful, wonderful sobfest!

10. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Not festive per se – but come on, who doesn't watch this at Christmas time?! When you realise Wonka isn't actually a crook, it's just lovely!
