christmas music

Has anyone else been singing along to Last Christmas on your morning commute or have I been bitten by the Christmas bug a little too early?

I adore Christmas music and once December rolls around it’s all I want to listen to.

Whether its Fairytale of New York or Driving Home for Christmas, I’ll sing along to every classic.

And it turns out it’s really good for us.

A recent study has discovered that Christmas music actually has a positive impact on our health.

Researchers at McGill University explained that Christmas music makes us feel happy and upbeat because it can often trigger happy memories in our minds.

The team gathered a group of people to take part in an experiment to prove their point. They split the group into four and got each of them to listen to four genres of music- happy, peaceful, scary and sad.

The researchers discovered that when the people listened to happy music, they thought of happy memories.

Christmas music is one of my favourite things about the holidays so this news has made me feel pretty merry.

I hate to say I told you so to all of the Grinches out there but… I told you so.

Trying to pick a favourite Christmas song ain’t easy, especially when there are so many classics to choose from.

However, there is one we can’t help but sing (screech) along to every time it is on the radio.

You know Christmas is truly here when you hear Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You, and the Grammy award-winning artists is celebrating quite the achievement this year.

The songstress has claimed the #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with her immortal holiday classic All I Want For Christmas Is You, 25 years after the original release.

This marks the first time in the song’s 25-year history it captured #1 on the respective chart after ascending to #3 in 2018.

It also stands out as her 19th number one entry on the Hot 100, making history as the most Hot 100 #1’s by a solo artist ever and the second most Hot 100 #1’s by any artist – breaking a tie with Elvis Presley and one behind The Beatles.

Mariah even earned a Guinness World Record for the highest-charting holiday (Christmas/New Year) song on the Billboard Hot 100 by a solo artist.

The Queen of Christmas shines brighter, bigger, and bolder than ever.

If anyone needs us we’ll be trying to reach that famous high note and failing miserably.

And that’s not all.

The All Too Well singer is also releasing a music video which is made entirely from home videos and there’s no doubt it’s going to turn us into blubbering messes.

She jokingly posted a video of her and her cats to share the news.

The 29-year-old spoke to her pets in the witty clip, “I know this is pretty wild but I’ve just written a Christmas song. I feel like it’s weird to wait a year to put it out. So, I don’t know what to do.”

Her three pets completely ignored her so Taylor decided to release the song herself, “When in doubt, ask the itty bitty pretty kitty committee,” she wrote alongside the video.

She added, “When they shun you with silence, ambivalence, and judgmental brush offs … just put the song out anyway.”

I’m counting down the minutes to its release.

If you find yourself gritting your teeth and clenching your fists at the first sounds of Christmas music, you're not alone.

Let's be honest; even if you're a massive fan of the festive season, the idea of celebrating it for an entire eight weeks doesn't appeal to everyone.

While you can quickly scroll by Facebook friends who post photos of their Christmas tree in early November, avoiding Christmas music can be a lot more difficult, especially if you work in the retail sector.

(Or an office with colleagues who would happily begin the festive season in May.)

And it turns out being subjected to an onslaught of Christmas carols can actually have a detrimental effect on your mental health.

Speaking to Sky News, clinical psychologist, Linda Blair, explained that attempting to tune out the likes of Mariah Carey, East 17 and Cliff Richard indirectly affects your brain's functioning.

"People working in the shops at Christmas have to tune out Christmas music, because if they don't, it really does stop you from being able to focus on anything else," she says.

"You're simply spending all of your energy trying not to hear what you're hearing."

In other words, early Christmas affects your productivity levels.

Something to remember the next time you're passing the office Suggestion Box, right?

The festive season may be jolly and bright, but for Ireland’s elderly it can be anything but. As people get involved in Christmas activities and many clubs and organisations close for the holidays, loneliness can have a devastating effect on the older community – something that Age Action is once again highlighting this year.

Lead man of Dublin’s Hunting the Brave, John Sadlier, is raising money for this brilliant cause with his debut solo single, Dare to Dream (this Christmas). All proceeds from the sale of this great Christmas tune go to Age Action, to make the festive season a little better for the country’s older people. Check out the unforgettable tune below:

Hunting the Brave is an alternative folk band hailing from Dublin. Their music is a blend of alternative pop and the soft subtleties of folk, with a dynamic range of guitar and piano-led songs.

Along with John’s first solo single, 2014 has been a huge year for Hunting the Brave, who supported The Coronas and White Lies, and were also firm favourites at all the big festivals, including Indiependence. After all this success, John felt it was only fair to give something back.

“Christmas is an exceptionally tough time for elderly people who face loneliness throughout the year. When I wrote this song, I really wanted to use it to create awareness for those less fortunate than myself. I couldn’t think of a better charity to help than Age Action and I am delighted to be working alongside them this year. If I help one person I will be glad I could make a difference.”

Robin Webster, CEO of Age Action, is thrilled to be involved in this Christmas campaign. ‘We are delighted that John has chosen Age Action this Christmas. By downloading the song Dare to Dream the public not only get a great single but also help our work with vulnerable older people this Christmas’.

Dare to Dream (This Christmas) is available on iTunes from November 19th 2014. Follow Hunting the Brave on Twitter and Facebook to keep up to date with news.
