Christmas

In what is probably one of the best Christmas presents to ever receive, Aer Lingus just made this year very special for a lot of people.

The airline asked Irish people living in America to share their stories of why they want to come home to Ireland for the holidays – and then they gave five lucky people return flights.

Flying from all across America and Canada, they all captured their journeys home on video.

Be warned ladies, we're sobbing while watching this:

We can probably all admit that the lead up to Christmas is just as much of a stressful time as it is a merry time.

The rush to get presents, cook the food and clean the house can drive people up the wall and in a recent survey, Irish parents' devious methods for cleaning-up were revealed.

Shockingly, nearly 71 percent of parents throw out their kids' toys ahead of Christmas without telling them (but all parents know they won't even remember said toys, right?). And poor Granny is blamed for giving kids the most presents.

Also, a lot of parents (six in ten) admit to threatening their children with coal if they are messy.

But even worse than that is the amount of waste that comes from giving the house a clean for the holidays.

Six in ten Irish parents will do a last minute clean of the home, and while that number is good, the numbers that follow aren't.

One in three are throwing plastic, rubber and toys into the recycling bin and because of this, Repak will have enough plastic to create over 51 MILLION Barbie dolls.

As well as that, there will be enough cardboard thrown out to make 262 million Christmas crackers and enough glass to create 1.7 million Christmas baubles. Shocking, right?!

So, instead of creating all of this rubbish, Repak want you to recycle wisely around this time of the year and be smart when starting your Christmas clear-out.

Maybe the results of this survey won't to as bad for Irish mothers next year!

Every Christmas, there is a flurry of gingerbread house being made, all in competition to be the very best.

But this gingerbread house beats them all… and it's not even made of gingerbread. Nope ladies, this house is made out of PIZZA.

The masterpiece was made by Thrillist, Carrie Dennis and instead of cookies, she made pizza walls, a pizza garden and even a pepperoni roof.

Honestly, we think we'll try to make this one at home tonight!

We love gingerbread houses of all shapes and sizes and hey, if Hanzel and Grettle can eat a house made of sweets, why can't we, right?!

But, we fell in love with this Up-themed gingerbread house, spotted on Delish, so much and now we don't know whether to eat it or just look and adore it.

The amazing display has every detail from the movie; the pastel colours, the small front porch and of course, the thousands of colourful balloons.

If only we could make a gingerbread house like that.

With all the lights and festive flare running rampant in our lovely little capital during the Christmas season, you would think that all of the locals would be in soaking up all the atmosphere of town in December.

When actually, most of us are trying to avoid town like the absolute plague.

1) The crowds

I just want to walk up Henry street, buy a lipstick in MAC and go home.

WHY ARE YOU ALL MAKING THIS SIMPLE TASK SO DIFFICULT.

2) The traffic

It doesn't even matter if you manage to avoid rush hour because in December, you can look forward to traffic ALL the time.

3) The queues

Want to walk around Dublin with a nice hot chocolate and soak in the festive cheer?

Make sure to pencil in the twenty minute queue for said hot chocolate. And also for anything else you may want to purchase

4) The over zealous shoppers

You really learn at Christmas that people are actually RUTHLESS.

Do not go up against an Irish mammy with a load of shopping bags on the street because you will LOSE.

5) The slow walkers

Yes Dublin is beautiful and yes the lights are sparkly but I really just want to be able to walk up this street at a reasonable if not brisk pace. Thanks.

6) The people who cannot use umbrellas

Particularly relevant this year, is the onslaught of umbrellas because we are now forced to do our Christmas shopping in literal STORMS.

Guard your eyeballs with your life people.

7) The drunk people

Don't get us wrong, we LOVE getting drunk at Christmas.

But we don't like those who use the festive season to get so drunk that they literally destroy everything in their path (including the festive spirit).

8) Penneys… in general

All we want in life is to be able to go into Penneys and fill our baskets up with handy stocking fillers.

But the crowds are exhausting and don't even get us started on the queues. And good luck if you want to get a matching festive PJs set in a size ten.

9) Public transport

Public transport at the best of times can be painful, but in December all modes of shepherding people to and from town become literal travelling boxes of sweat.

The Luas gets a particular shout out on this one.

We may just be feeling a bit grumpy after spending the last few weeks Christmas shopping but we do still think Dublin is amazing at Christmas.

(But we personally won't be heading in til the New Year)

Ellie Goulding is no stranger to doing a few covers and her unique voice usually comes as a welcome variation on a classic tune.

And this year, Ellie is treating us to her own rendition of a classic Christmas song.

The 28-year-old has just released her own version of O Holy Night as a free download and gave us previews of the tune on social media.

We like it!

Posting a preview to her Instagram, the star said: "I recorded this for fun and as a *christmassy* thank you for all the beautiful support I've had this year."

Ellie has had a pretty big year with the release of her third album and with her single On My Mind topping the charts.

Will you be giving Ellie a whirl on Christmas Day?

We think if Santa Claus happened to be female, she would do a stellar job.

Think of all the multi-tasking a Miss Claus could achieve in one calendar year.

However, we all know that Santa is depicted in popular culture as a male, which we suppose is not THAT surprising.

But would it be so shocking if Santa turned out to be female? And would she not be able do just as good of a job as a male Santa?

This is the question posed to children in a social experiment video created by creative agency, Anomaly

The cute, festive video aims to encourage parents to discuss issues of gender inequality with their children from a young age.

And from the video, it is clear to see why.

Children, who are very used to a male version of Santa, pretty much unanimously agree that a female could not hack Santa's job.

The main issues seem to be that a female Santa would be too busy having babies and getting "lost in the sky."

Though, one child notes that she may be smaller than Santa and therefore might be able to get down the chimney easier.

The video is pretty cute but does pin point the problems with gender representation in popular culture that children are exposed to from birth.

FYI kids, a female Santa would be kick ass. And we all know the real Santa would not get very far without Mrs. Claus.

It's almost Christmas, which means it's time for your Facebook timeline to start filling up with surprise homecoming videos.

We've seen everything from people hiding in cardboard boxes to organising airport flashmobs – but this latest video is simple in its perfection.

Sit on the couch and wait until your mam walks in – John McAleenan from Rostrevor, Co. Down had the right idea when he flew home from New York to surprise his family.

Probably one of the best things I've ever done, so glad to be home after a year x #christmassurprise

Posted by John McAleenan on Saturday, 12 December 2015

It "had to be done" said John of the sweet video, which has racked up 23,000 views since it was posted over the weekend.

His mammy's reaction is oh-so adorable, and we'll just say this – have the tissues at the ready.

Happy Christmas!

The countdown to Christmas is well and truly underway, and we're getting all hot and sweaty just thinking about the amount of Christmas shopping we have left to do.

With stormy weather to battle, crowded buses to navigate, and endless queues to face, we're considering forgoing shopping outdoors entirely.

If online shopping is sounding mighty tempting right about now, your first destination should be Hampers & Co, an Irish website offering everything from wine and chocolate Pamper Hampers to gifts with a difference for your dad.

To make the situation even sweeter, you can now get a 15% discount from Hampers & Co for a limited time, by using the code XMAS015 at the checkout. Boom!

Of course, not everyone in our gift-giving circle is quite so quick-thinking, and we've definitely received a few clangers over the years. Here are just a few of the gifts we've all put on that *fake smile* for…

1. The 'I bought this at 5pm on Christmas Eve' gift
There are two extremes here – the €10 Penneys PJs or the desperately expensive gold watch that was totally panic-bought.

2. The 'This is really for me, not you' gift
'Cos you've ALWAYS wanted an XBox, right?

3. The 'I saw this and thought of you' gift
Which of course begs the question, 'Why did a Weight Watchers cookery book make you think of me?'

4. The 'IOU one present' gift
This better come wrapped up with one huge apology.

5. The 'But you love handmade things!' gift
Sock puppets, our FAVE.

6. The 'All that was open was the 24-hour garage' gift
A selection box, windscreen washer fluid and a copy of today's newspaper – yay!

7. The 'Mary in HR said she loves this jewellery brand so I thought you would too' gift
Ah, Mary in HR, the gift-buying oracle.

8. The 'I'm giving something back this year' gift
Much as we love the fact that you're charitable, we really had our hearts set on a fancy new mascara. Sigh.

Avoid falling foul to one of the above this year, and get your Christmas shopping sorted with Hampers & Co. No more fake smiles!

We have seen Santa in many guises, but this one might just be our favourite.

The Yorkdale Shopping Centre in the States has given aul St. Nick a festive makeover this year and seriously he has NEVER looked better.

Taking to their Instagram account, the shopping centre has posted numerous pics of Santa striking some serious poses as he takes a break from planning for the big day on the December 25.

In the super trendy snaps, Santa has temporarily ditched the ill-fitting red suit for some very fetching festive fashion by top designers such as Burberry.

Well, la-di-dah Santa.

And Fashion Santa is not just featuring on a social media campaign because if you happen to be in Yorkdale, you can actually meet him.

The fashionable king of Christmas, who is portrayed by model Paul Mason, will be kicking around the shopping centre in the build up for the big day.

This is one Santa that we would want to meet.

We would imagine that all postal services get extremely busy in the run up to Christmas as we all try to wish our nearest and dearest a very merry festive season.

So you might forgive the postman for deciding that he has got no time for the post card arrived from America with not even half an address.

The post card failed to include the surname of the recipient, the county name or even a street name.

Instead, it simply read: "Albert, Carndonagh, Ireland."

And whatever you might say about the Irish postal service, An Post did not give up on this one.

The writer obviously assumed that Ireland was small enough that surely someone would know who Albert in Carndonagh was.

And well, they were actually right.

According to the Donegal Now, the card was intended for Sinn Fein councillor Albert Downey who is thankfully rather well known in the community.

The card reads: "Greetings from across the pond Albert! Wanted to wish you a very grand day! Your Sister Cities Friends!"

We reckon in the Carndonagh post office deserves a raise.
