Christmas

Let's be real. Apart from turkey, the taste of Christmas is gingerbread.

The little ginger men and houses make a great treat to munch on every year, and if you're in and around Dublin this season, drop by to one (or all) of these places for the BEST gingerbread experience of your life:

1. The Morrison's Miracle on Strand Street

As part of the Morrison Hotel's Christmas menu, there is a FAB cocktail with bacardi, gingerbread syrup and lime juice. What more could you want?!

2. Gingerbread house from the Natural Bakery

For the best gingerbread houses you've seen (and eaten), the Natural Bakery's are top notch. And there are loads of locations around Dublin and Naas to get one.

3. Gingerbread pot au creme in the Gibson Hotel

Because there's nothing cuter than these yummy treats.

4. Gingerbread hot chocolate from Butlers

Forget Starbucks pumpkin spiced lattes because Butlers gingerbread hot choc's are the way to go.

5. Gingerbread vanilla chocolate fudge brownie shake from Sweet Republic

Just LOOK at it! You can grab one of these from Sweet Republic on Bachelor's Walk.

We all have our Christmas traditions.

Whether it's as harmless as carving up the turkey or as embarrassing as whipping out your choreography to 'All I want for Christmas', it is all part of the festive fun.

Well except for Ryan Gosling who doesn't find his wife's festive traditions particularly fun.

Ryan has revealed in an interview with Hello! Magazine that Eva Mendes has rather questionable taste in Christmas music.

"She's obsessed with the Hanson Christmas album! No disrespect to Hanson, they're very talented kids, but I think I've heard that record enough. I'm sure it will be on a loop this Christmas as well."

So Eva loves a bit of the 'mmm-boppers' then does she? Very interesting…

Well no matter how woeful Ryan finds the Christmas music, he is still really excited for this Christmas because of the other little lady in his life, the couple's daughter, Esmerelda.

"This will be our first Christmas where [she is] sort of taking it all in, so that's exciting."

Nawh!

As for Ryan, he has never been happier to be a family man.

"There's nothing else I'm looking for. I know that I'm with the person I'm supposed to be with."

Eva Mendes, we are eternally jealous of you.

Presents, decorations, tins of biscuits and turkey… all the turkey. There's a lot to worry about when planning a typical Irish Christmas.

While we always swear we'll help out with the cooking, cleaning, table-setting and veggie-roasting on Christmas Day, in reality we're generally shooed out of the kitchen by our very flustered mam.

In fact, a huge 45% of Irish mammies say they do the Christmas Day baking alone – that's according to a new survey by Stork.

And 1 in 5 Irish mothers say the hard work they do at Christmas goes unappreciated – even though we do try to lend a hand. Well, just once, before falling asleep in front of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

It's tough being a mammy at this time of year – and here are nine things you're bound to hear in your house over the festive season:

1. 'Two weeks to Christmas? That flew in'
Calendars, eh? Mad yokes.

2. 'Where in God's name did I put the Christmas lights?'
Every year they're left in a 'safe place.' Usually under a box of old duvets somewhere only she knows of.

3. 'While you're getting the decorations out of the attic, we might as well do a big clear out'
NOOOOOOO.

4. 'Who opened the good biscuits? Who was it?'
They're for the neighbours, doncha know.

5. 'I'm only doing a turkey crown this year, we were eating leftovers for a week last time.'
In the end though, she'll buy a full one, because how else would you make sambos after dinner?

6. 'I've a lovely Nigella recipe for Fruity Turkey Curry for Stephen's Day.'
Cue groans.

7. 'NO phones at the dinner table this year.'
But how else will we take selfies in our Christmas cracker hats?

8. 'Will you come into town with me, I've one or two things left to get'
'One or two things' = approx 18 tins of biscuits, presents for ALL the cousins and an outfit for Christmas Day.

9. 'Do you think we'll have enough?'
Usually said while looking anxiously at a trolley bursting with selection boxes and bottles of fizzy orange.

In case you didn't know, LOVE magazine releases an online festive advent calendar each year full to the brim with festive goodies.

Each day reveals a new treat and it usually involves someone you love mucking about or looking incredibly gorgeous.

This year's advent calendar kicked off to a riotous start with Kendall Jenner's hilarious mini video.

The festive clip featured the gorgeous model dressed up as one of 2015's greatest icons, left shark.

Yes, THE left shark from Katy Perry's Super Bowl performance.

In a perfect pop culture combination, the video sees Kendall sneak up on herself in the shower dressed as the iconic shark in a quirky homage to that famous shower scene from Hitchcock's Psycho.

What does it mean? Who knows, but it's bloomin' brilliant.

Today we were greeted by Gigi in her undies and well who wouldn't want to see Gigi dance around in her undies.

Today on THELOVEMAGAZINE.co.uk it's the heavenly @gigihadid @redmackey #dogwyn

When it comes to Christmas advertising, Coca-Cola are often considered the ringleaders of the perfect Christmas ad.

The popular soft drinks company are single handedly responsible for the fact that Santa is always dressed in red. Before the Coke ads of the early twentieth century, St. Nick used to be decked out in green!

Not only did the company make festive advertising a thing, but the Coke truck that was featured in their most popular ad campaign still gets people into a frenzy. So yeah, they defo know what they are doing.

However, it turns out that even Coca-Cola can get it wrong from time to time.

The company has recently been forced to pull a Mexican Christmas ad after it received a barrage of negative comments on social media following its debut.

The ad starts by stating that "81.6% of indigenous Mexicans speak an indigenous tongue and feel rejected by Mexican society."

Then, a group of pretty, white twenty-somethings decide to selflessly make a trip into the mountains to share a coke under the tree with the indigenous people of Mexico.

The message is topped off by the hashtag #openyourheart.

Following the advertisement's release, various health groups got in contact with Mexico's National Council to Prevent Discrimination labelling the ad as discriminatory and "outrageous for the indigenous [people]"

And the purported reason for the outrage is that Mexico has one of the highest rates of fizzy drinks consumption in the world as well as one of the fastest growing rates of obesity. While these issues are becoming increasingly difficult for people all over the country, they pose a significant and ongoing problem for indigenous people.

So yeah, considering the amount of sugar one Coke contains, it's no surprise that people find the ad a bit hypocritical.

Coca-Cola quickly removed the ad stating "We appreciated you sharing your concerns. We will be sure to pass along your comments."

Best stick to the big red trucks so.

Australian MP Andrew Leigh sent out his annual family Christmas card this year, but one member of his brood was having none of it.

The Canberra-based politician had his festive greeting gatecrashed somewhat by his youngest son, who flat-out refused to smile for the snap.

Just by looking at this photo we can guess exactly what went one – 25 failed attempts to get the little fella to smile, followed by a 'Fine! Well we'll take the photo without you then' which Andrew and his wife actually decided to follow through on.

The Christmas card has gone viral since it was sent around this week – we're sure Andrew's only delighted with the increase in public popularity.

But we all know it's his toddler son who's the true hero. Meme waiting to happen.

Hands up who's already sweating about what to buy their parents this Christmas?

No doubt your dad has already said he 'only wants a pair of socks' which of course means, 'I swear to God if you give me socks on Christmas morning you'll be evicted from this house.'

As for your mum, there are only so many candles, vouchers and framed family photos you can give her before it gets old.

In fact, one Irish mother has decided enough is enough when it comes to unwanted gifts. Instead of a Christmas gift list, comedian Brona Titley got the exact opposite – a list of all the things her mother DIDN'T want.

Among the – very specific – things on the list are:

– 'No wallets bags purses rocks perfume scarves face cream or anything cosmetic'

– 'Nothing for the house as it is inanimate'

– 'No jewellery of any kind'

– 'No re-gifts or tired wardrobe things'

But of course, anything else 'might be possible,' as Brona's mam concedes that she is 'easy to buy for.' Ahem.

This genius text was sent back in 2013, but Brona re-posted it this week as she started her 2015 Christmas shopping.

Last year, the Irish comedian admitted she broke 'rule no. 17' to buy her mum an M&S voucher.

We wish her the best of luck this time around… sounds like she'll need it.

If things had gone differently, we'd know Gigi Hadid by a very different name these day.

She may have one of the most perfect supermodel monikers now, but Gigi actually grew up as Jelena Noura Hadid.

Yeah, it doesn't quite roll off the tongue does it?

According to Gigi: "A teacher asked my mom, 'If I needed to call Jelena a nickname, what would it be?' And my mom was like, 'I call her Gigi sometimes,' and the name stuck."

Thank goodness for that!

It turns out that the majority of our favourite celebrities were not actually born with their rock star names. Check out this list of some mundane, some surprising and some ridiculous celebrity name changes.

1) Suki Waterhouse

Suki is actually this British model's middle name. Her first name is actually Alice!

But apparently her ex beau Bradley Cooper used to use her real name and as you can imagine, people were a bit puzzled.

"I told him that that was my name when we first met, and I called him something else, too. It was just something fun, but then I stopped and he didn't, so he introduced me to everyone as Alice. It confuses people sometimes… "

2) Blake Lively

The lovely Blake's real name does not have quite the ring to it. Blake's real surname is Brown but her father opted to break the marital tradition and take the surname of Blake's Mum, Elaine instead.

Blake Brown. Not so much.

3) Jude Law

Jude Law is actually not a Jude at all, but a David. He decided to use his middle name as his celebrity persona.

It is quite amazing that the name Jude adds about ten times more sex appeal.

4) Elizabeth Banks

Elizabeth Irene Mitchell was the real name of this famous lady. As Elizabeth rose to fame, she was forced to change her name as there was another Elizabeth Mitchell working in the biz (you may recognise her from Lost).

How did she choose her stage name?

"I made a list and then alphabetised it, and Banks was the first one on the list. And I called [the Screen Actors Guild] and they said it was available, so I said, ‘I’ll take it!’ I just wanted it over with!”

5) Lily James

Lily changed her surname from Thomson to James to honour her late father, James Thomson, who died in a car crash in 2008.

6) Calvin Harris

Calvin's real name is actually Adam Wiles.

As for why he changed his perfectly normal name to another perfectly normal name, we have no idea.

7) Katy Perry

Having a name that sounds too similar to another star sounds like a pretty common problem for celebrities.

Katy Perry changed her name from Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson because it was decided it sounded too similar to Kate Hudson.

8) Olivia Wilde

Olivia changed her surname from Cockburn in favour of adopting the surname of Oscar Wilde.

Why you ask? To honour coming from a family full of writers (even though she has no relation to Oscar whatsoever).

9) Joaquin Pheonix

Joaquin's whole family changed their surname from Bottom to Pheonix after leaving a religious CULT.

We can understand why they would have wanted to leave that past behind them, but we think changing the surname Bottom was a good idea in general.

10) Helen Mirren

In perhaps the most shocking reason EVER for a name change, Helen Mirren was actually born Ilynea Lydia Mironoff.

The Oscar winning actress and her family were stranded in London during the Russian Revolution and her father decided to change her name to avoid being her being treated suspiciously during the Cold War!

11) Nicolas Cage

Did you know that Nicolas Cage was the nephew of legendary director Franics Ford Coppola?

Well as you can imagine that surname is pretty well know which is why he changed his surname to Cage so that people would not discover the link. We think it worked!
