Christmas

You may have noticed that today Dublin city has seen a huge influx of very cute, and very large puppies.

While they are not of the fluffy variety- as they are in fact papier mâché puppies- they still have people stopping for photos and sharing them on social media.

The pups are part of a campaign called The Puppy Promise.

The puppies are a reminder from Dog’s Trust Ireland that a puppy is not just for Christmas. The puppies who have even been joining commuters on the LUAS today appear to look quite sad.

While they do look cute, it is worth noting that they are a reminder of the countless animals who are abandoned every year.

The rather glum looking puppies have been spotted about the city with social media users sharing their photos of the canine props to help spread the message.

The charity point out on their website that every November they see a huge increase in the amount of puppies advertised for sale. In January the amount of dogs then abandoned will also inevitably spike. So, they are asking people to make the Puppy Promise

For many coffee junkies, the arrival of the Starbucks red holiday cups heralds the arrival of the festive season – even if they do launch in early November.

Every year the coffee giant introduces a new design for the cups, to go along with winter-themed drinks like Toffee Nut Lattes, Almond Hot Chocolates and Peppermint Mochas.

The 2015 cup design is the company's most minimal one yet, but it's already causing huge controversy online.

Why? Some conservative Christian groups are suggesting that Starbucks' plain red ombré cups – with no stars, Santas or trees in sight – are an attempt to "whitewash" Christmas.

"The Red Cups are now an anti-Christmas symbol," writes journalist Raheem Kasan.

"Subliminally, [customers are] being told/reminded that this time of the year is no longer about Christmas."

Starbucks, on the other hand, says their plain red cups are a "more open way to usher in the holiday."

Some angry Twitter users have gotten on board with Raheem's view on social media, announcing plans to "boycott" Starbucks and calling the new cups a "war on Christmas."

A few have even said they'll tell employees their name is "Merry Christmas" to force them to write it on the cup.

Of course, for the most part, coffee lovers are just excited about the new flavours:

What do you think of the controversy?

OK, so we're not entirely sure how we feel about it being quite so Christmasy quite so early.

November 6; we're only just over the excitement of Halloween when suddenly bags of yuletide delights and oodles of festive cheer has flooded shops, streets and homes.

Ho, ho, ho – or bah humbug?

Well, while another six weeks of glittery goodness and mulled wine-infused air might prove taxing, we're today feeling sufficiently good-humoured to embrace the spirit of the season.

And certainly, we couldn't help but get oh-so unreasonably giddy at the sight of the Brown Thomas Christmas window on Grafton Street.

Unveiled last night, this year the theme is Store Of Wonders. As BTs explains: "We have gone back to the simple pleasure of a great story well told and have decided to celebrate the art of storytelling.

"We are doing fairytales and enchanted stories with a Brown Thomas twist."

Below, we bring you the gorgeous windows – which, it has to be said, are particularly stunning for 2015. In the meantime… 'jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way…'

Got any plans for November 15th? You do now.

We were already INSANELY excited by the news that Dublin was getting its own Rockefeller-style tree this year at the Custom House Quarter, and now plans to Christmas-ify the rest of the city have been revealed.

The Grafton St Christmas lights will be switched on next month during an official ceremony on Sunday November 15.

Free family entertainment will kick off at 4pm, with an unannounced "special guest" showing up to turn on the lights once the sun sets.

Henry St's bauble light wreaths will be lighting up the city from a few days earlier, as they'll be switched on from Thursday November 12. Again there'll be free entertainment from 5pm, with a special guest in attendance to flick the switch.

In the spirit of all things Christmassy, DublinTown.ie have put together a pretty cool infographic with some facts about the famous lights.

For example, did you know it takes 20 people a full FOUR weeks to hang the lights?

There are 47,350 individual bulbs on Grafton St alone – we'd hate to be tasked with untangling those…

The lights will be on for a total of 1,000 hours between November and January.

Each light curtain you see contains 50,000 bulbs – there are three throughout the city.

And around 25m people are expected to walk under the lights this year.

A black mesh maxi – with a distinctly designer feel: we've had our eye on one particular dress that Penneys has had in the offing since unveiling its a/w collection.

And now – FINALLY! – it's arriving in Irish stores.

Even if we have been pronouncing it wrong all this time (oopsies), here at SHEmazing! Towers we're mega-fans of the chocolatey, hazelnutty, sugary spread that is Nutella.

In fact, we had long-ago assumed that it couldn't really get any better.

How very wrong we were: because now Nutella has just upped its game… and we're deliciously excited.

Yes, from this Friday, Brown Thomas Dublin will be offering an exclusive personalisation service which allows you to brandish the otherwise humble jar.

Never know what to get your friends and family for Christmas? Well sit back and relax; it may only be October, but you're already sorted – because it will be tubs of Nutella all round this festive season.

Brown Thomas is calling it the "ultimate stocking filler". Pish-posh, we say! These will be given pride of place under the tree (albeit away from the radiator), because it's unlikely that any other gift will top them. Ever.

You have up to nine characters to play with (fair play Alexander and Aoibheann, you just make it – better luck next time, Christopher and Blaithnaid) and can avail of the service in the Grafton Street store's Living Floor on Level 3.

Individual personalised jars are priced at €5.50, while there is also the option to purchase a personalised jar in a presentation box for €7.50.

The Nutella personalisation service is available exclusively at Brown Thomas Dublin from Friday October 16 onwards.

Hurrah for pumpkins! The giant veg have now hit supermarkets, getting us oh-so excited for Halloween.

But just WHAT should we do with the leftover sticky, sweet mess of orange flesh and that tough, waxy exterior? Because all too often it all just ends up in the bin come November 1.

Fear not! There are actually loads of different things you can do with your spooky pumpkin once Halloween concludes.

Here, SHEmazing! rounds up our favourites tricks…

1) In the kitchen:

Pumpkin fries are a delicious, healthier-alternative to their potato counterparts:

  • Cut the flesh into thick chips 1-2cm thick.
  • Wash and pat dry with kitchen roll before transferring to a bowl.
  • Sprinkle generously with salt and leave aside to draw out any excess water.
  • Place on a baking tray lined with parchment paper. Lightly drizzle with a vegetable oil of your choice.
  • Bake at 200C for 40 minutes before serving immediately.

Roasted pumpkin hummus is a welcomed twist:

  • Cut the pumpkin flesh into cubes, drizzle with vegetable oil and bake on parchment paper for 35/40 minutes at 200C.
  • When cooled, add to a food processor. Top with a can of drained chickpeas, two cloves of garlic, two tablespoons of lemon juice and ground cumin to taste.
  • When the motor is running, add in about 60mls of virgin olive oil.
  • Remove and dress with chopped parsley and black pepper before serving.

2) In the bathroom:

Make a pumpkin spice body spruce to banish dry, rough skin as we head into the winter months:

  • Take a mixing bowl and add in 400g of brown sugar, 100g of white sugar and a sprinkle of ground cinnamon, nutmeg or clove. Mix together.
  • Gradually add in 100mls of almond or coconut oil until you have a damp, solid mass.
  • Transfer to a re-sealable jar and keep in the fridge for up to eight weeks.
  • Apply with exfoliating gloves to clean skin while in the shower and rinse afterwards.

3) In the water:

The more ambitious individual might fancy fashioning their giant pumpkin into a boat: a pumpkinfest in Maine in the US runs an annual water-based competition with participants racing in hollowed out pumpkins.

This year’s event, the 10th pumkin boat regatta, kicked off last week and will run until Monday. But don’t worry – the 2016 festival is already earmarked for 12 months’ time.

4) In the living room:

Painted pumpkin seeds can be dried out and used to create gorgeous Christmas tree decorations:

  • Wash the seeds, dry thoroughly and then toast on a low heat in the oven for 10 minutes. Leave these to sit overnight.
  • Take some cardboard and cut into Christmas tree shapes. Next glue the dried seeds to the template, with the pointed end facing downward to create a pinecone effect.
  • Allow the glue to dry before applying green, red, silver or gold spray-paint.
  • Finish with glitter or top with ribbons to hang from the tree.

5) In the party spirit:

Pumpkin-infused vodka or gin is a delightful as a seasonal liquor or in cocktails:

  • Dry roast pumpkin cubes on parchment paper for around 25/30minutes.
  • Decant 750mls of vodka or gin into a re-sealable jar and then add the pumpkin cubes, along with cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg.
  • Allow to sit for three weeks in a cool, dark place.
  • Strain out the liquid through a cheese cloth so you’re left with a clear, orange infusion.
  • Keep in the fridge and serve on its own or as part of a cocktail.

6) In the garden:

Simply rough chop any remaining pumpkin and work it into garden soil to act as a fertiliser. And why not sow your own for next year’s festivities?

Plant in late April in a greenhouse, conservatory or even on a window sill indoors, before transferring outside in late May or early June. Be careful not to over-water but use plenty of compost. Watch out for hungry slugs and snails too.

As Christmas movies go, Home Alone has a fairly straightforward plot line. Kevin McCallister gets left home alone by his family, antics ensue.

But there's been one detail in the movie that has always annoyed us a little… and lots of other people too, it would seem.

Early on in the movie, a storm causes trees to fall on phone lines, meaning Kevin can't contact his mum and dad to let them know he's okay.

And yet later in the film, he successfully orders a cheese pizza (and manages to terrify the delivery man in the process).

So, before the days of mobile internet and all that jazz, how on earth did Kevin make a phone call with a broken phoneline?

Well, you'll sleep easy tonight because we've finally solved the mystery… with the help of some logical thought from a Reddit user on a thread about movie plot holes.

"I always assumed the tree actually severed the main trunk line to the whole town, but local calls within the same exchange still worked," the quick-thinking Home Alone fan wrote.

To set the record straight, the Huffington Post contacted American telecommunications company AT&T, who says the theory is definitely a solid one.

"Everything is changing now because of all this phone capability is moving into the cloud, but in 1990, that was absolutely a plausible scenario," spokesperson said.

"When you're trying to call from Paris, now you're relying on a whole series of connections including undersea cables, any one of which could have a problem, which would prevent you from reaching some particular telephone number."

Plot hole or not, that pizza scene is still one of our faves, for this line alone:

If there was any lingering doubt (and there probably wasn't) that summer is well and truly over – today proves once and for all that winter is definitely en route.

And while darker, colder evenings are a bit of a downer, the prospect of roaring fires, Halloween delights and festive fun is admittedly rather tempting.

Is too early to be thinking of that most essential of Yuletide wardrobe stables – the Christmas jumper?

Last Wednesday marked the start of the 100-day countdown to Christmas, so we've decided it's officially OK to start getting more than a little excited.

In fact, we uttered a quiet "ho, ho, ho," when we heard of plans for a pretty spectacular addition to Dublin's 2015 Christmas landscape.

Yes, as part of a month-long new festive festival in the capital, the Fair City will be getting a HUGE Rockefeller-style fir tree to rival that of New York's.

Exciting! The tree will be erected in Dublin's Custom House Quarter at the start of the I Believe Festival, which is running from November 26 to December 23.

Donated by Coillte, the tree will be at least 15metres high. Although it'll be dwarfed by the 38metre Rockefeller tree, we reckon it will still look pretty special against the city's backdrop.

According to the festival organisers "selected charities" will take ownership of the tree throughout the festival, using the area for gift drives and fundraising.

Set in a "chalet style village," the surrounding market will furthermore offer delicious food, drinks, crafts and unique presents for loved-ones.

Santa will be appearing (natch), and visitors can even buy their Christmas trees from a dedicated market at the Point Village.

And while we love the Grafton Street lights and the bauble tree on O'Connell Street, there is always something magical about a real Christmas tree – meaning we'll certainly be heading to the Custom House Quarter for the 2015 Yuletide season.

So… basically, this is us right now:

I BELIEVE will run for 28 days in the lead-up to Christmas from Thursday, November 26 until Wednesday, December 23 at the Custom House Quarter in Dublin, which includes George’s Dock, The CHQ Building and its surrounding area.

With the sun shining outside and Halloween still weeks away, Christmas couldn't have been the furthest thing from our minds… until we stepped into the Christmas Market at Brown Thomas.

A dedicated Christmas area opened at Brown Thomas stores  in Dublin, Cork and Limerick last week, catering to anyone planning ahead for the upcoming festive season, and S! TV headed along for a first look.

This year's Christmas range is divided into four themes – Ice Palace, Venetian Winter, I Love Candy and of course, Santa's Journey. With a huge selection of seasonal decorations, gifts and food on offer, there's no shortage of temptation.

Roll on December 25th…
