If you're partial to a margarita or a Corona with lime on a summer's evening, you had better be careful where you drink it.

Some terrifying pictures have been doing the rounds online over the last few days, all showing painful looking chemical skin burns from a very unexpected source. Phytophotodermatitis, a.ka. "margarita dermatitis", occurs when the sun's UV rays come into contact with the juice or oil of certain plants, vegetables or fruit… in particular lime juice.

All it takes is for a splash of lime juice to land on your skin on a hot day for a reaction to occur, although it can take a few days for the burn to fully develop. If you don't wash the juice off quickly, you'll be left with painful flaking, redness and burning. OW. Depending on the level of heat and the amount of juice, the reaction can range from minor:

TO MAJOR:

Search #phytophotodermatitis on Instagram if you're in the mood for anything more graphic (read: BLISTERS BLISTERS BLISTERS).

Limes aren't the only cause of the burns, either. If you're preparing anything containing citrus fruits, celery, wild parsley, wild parsnip, wild dill or other wild flowers before heading outside, be sure to wash up well with soap and water.

And if you have been unlucky enough to be affected, you have a couple of options. For mild reactions, an application of 1% hydrocortisone cream two or three times a day should help clear it up and reduce pain. For more severe peeling or blistering, be sure to see your doctor as soon as possible. Don't panic though, as even major reactions should heal completely in time.

Today's lesson – keep those margarita pitchers indoors, people.

It’s warm! No really – it’s proper warm out.

In fact, it’s a day to venture outside without so much as a hint of a geansai. And it’s time to wear your sandals with pride too. Yes, leave your sunnies on… there are no clouds in the sky (seriously – we just checked).

For many of us, it will be only right and proper to mark the occasion with a cool cocktail of sorts. It’s officially a school night, admittedly, but we have no idea when the weather will take a turn for the worse – so it’s probably best just to take action now.

Here, we’ve compiled three of our favourites…

Vodka-lemon slush:

  • 500mls lemonade
  • 500mls of orange juice
  • Three dessert spoons of sugar
  • 7UP or Sprite to top up with
  • 750mls vodka

Makes enough for an evening soiree

  1. Leaving the 7UP aside, in a large plastic container (eg a big lunchbox) combine all ingredients and mix well.
  2. Cover and freeze overnight.
  3. To serve, scrape a spoon across the top of the frozen mixture and then half fill a glass with the slush.
  4. Top it up with 7UP and enjoy.

Crushed berry gin:

  • 10/12 frozen mixed berries
  • One teaspoon of sugar
  • Ice
  • A squeeze of lime and lemon juice
  • Two fresh strawberries to serve (if you're feeling fancy)
  • 50mls gin

Makes one crushed berry gin

  1. You can make these for individuals or in smaller batches – ideal if you don’t plan on consuming an entire bottle of spirits (hardly advisable at the best of times).
  2. In a blender, combine the ice, sugar and frozen berries.
  3. Squeeze a dash of lime and lemon over the mixture, add your rum, and then top up with 7Up to taste.
  4. Blend again until smooth..
  5. Pour into a glass and serve – garnishing with sliced strawberry.

Classic mojito:

  • 8 mint leaves
  • Half a lime, chopped
  • Crushed ice
  • 15g of brown sugar
  • Soda water
  • 80mls white rum

Makes two classic mojitos

  1. Mash up mint, lime, and sugar in a cocktail shaker – or just stick in a sandwich bag and hammer with a rolling pin.
  2. If you’re using a shaker, next add a generous scoop of ice and then the rum. If you’ve gone down the sandwich bag route, transfer into a large bowl before adding the same.
  3. Shake/stir until well-mixed and then strain equally into two chilled glasses.
  4. Top up with soda water to taste.

It's not all cocktails and spray tans – there are some really annoying things about going on a girls night out…

1. The pressure of getting ready
While we're excited about our night out, getting ready and choosing our clothes can be SO annoying.

2.  Irish Weather ruining our style..literally
Quickly doing a make-up session in the back seat of the taxi before disembarking from a vehicle filled with merry girls. And of course, with the inevitabilities of Irish weather, a massive squall of wind comes and sticks your coiffured hair to your lip-gloss. This may seem trivial in the grand scheme of things, but it’s not a good look prior to making your main entrance.

3. Do you know who I am?
Strutting up to the very top of the queue, despite there being an evident and lengthy group of punters waiting to get in. The personality drink you just indulged in at pre-drinks empowers you with the audacity to do so. However, your self- assumed celebrity status is met with the reprimanding words of the bouncer to join the queue with the rest of your peasant counterparts – ‘end of the queue love.’

4. Toilet formalities
Straight to the toilets to be met with another large queue and some awful girls banging on the cubicle door like you’re under attack, urging you to ‘hurry up’ (okay, in reality that may be spoken with some expletives). However, you can’t hurry up because there’s about four of your mates shoved into the same cubicle having an absolute DMC.

5. Oh no you did not!
You’ve finally fought your way to the bar besieged by a profusion of people. Having received your drink, you turn and make for the dance floor when some girl steps on your toe. I mean it when I say there is possibly no other pain in the world quite like it. An utter sense of rage descends upon you.

6. Feeling like the bag lady
Being on a cheap one, or in other words being so frugal you can’t spare some change to put your coat in the cloakroom, thus you’re condemned to lugging it around for the night – effectively ruining your entire outfit and disenabling you to ooze any sense of coolness while creeping through the club. You don’t see Carrie Bradshaw bearing the burden of an anorak coat in a high-end LA nightclub do you?

7. Hey Mister DJ!
Surely we all love some classic oldies or a good chart song, but when the same music is played on every night out, it almost drives you to drink more just to drown out the harsh reality that NEYO is playing for the sixth time in a row.

8. Wearing heels is a workout, forget about squats!!
If a nightclub has too many unnecessary staircases, your night begins to feel more like an actual work out more than anything else. Sporting killer heels alone constitutes exercise, and this is something we females are willingly to sacrifice within reason. However, clambering the steps is potentially both dangerous and ludicrous! Elevators are key..
