If you – like us –  find yourself lying about the number of coffees you get through in a day, the good folk from the world of science are here to tell us that we no longer have to live a lie.

While your friends and co-workers reach for their second litre of water and you guzzle down your fourth flat white, experts in the field suggest you stop hiding you habit and start boasting about the benefits.

According to a recent study, your coffee habit will stand to you in the future, with findings suggesting that women over 65 who drink two or three cups of coffee per day reduce the risk of dementia by a third.

With the help of almost 6,500 women, researchers from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee established that caffeine consumption of more than 261 mg per day was associated with a staggering 36 per cent reduction in the risk of dementia.

"The mounting evidence of caffeine consumption as a potentially protective factor against cognitive impairment is exciting given that caffeine is also an easily modifiable dietary factor with very few contraindications," lead author Professor Ira Driscoll explained.

"What is unique about this study is that we had an unprecedented opportunity to examine the relationships between caffeine intake and dementia incidence in a large and well-defined, prospectively-studied cohort of women."

The study's authors explain that the level of caffeine recorded in the study equate with two to three 8-oz cups of coffee per day, five to six 8-oz cups of black tea, or seven to eight 12-ounce cans of cola.

Get thee to the local cafe, ladies!

With Starbucks and food porn dominating the social media scene, these days coffee is pretty much synonymous with Instagram.

And because this favoured beverage is being pictured a gazillion times a day, those making it are becoming increasingly more creative.

Earlier this year, barista Dayne Levinrad decided that the latest caffeinated craze should involve drinking coffee from ice-cream cones, but in order to prevent the drink from leaking through said cones, the former digital marketing executive had to design a special cone-sealing technique.

CNN has reported that after much testing, the South African discovered that by lining his cones with four different types of chocolate, he would be able to successfully serve coffee cones to his customers.

The clever idea has since been patented by Dayne and – due to the pretty nature of the concept – has received huge attention online.

While we’re all for trying the latest coffee concoctions, we’re not sure a salty brew is really to our taste.

But, as it turns out, adding a shake of salt to a good cup of Joe is actually a thing.

According to culinary expert Alton Brown, salt can be used to reduce a cuppa’s bitter flavour and to remove the “stale” taste of tank-stored water.

On his website the food show presenter recommends adding a quarter teaspoon of kosher salt to every six tablespoons of ground coffee.

He claims you won’t be able to taste the salt but because salt is better at neutralising bitterness than sugar a quarter teaspoon will “do the trick”.

See you on Thursday, yeah?

Imagine waking up in the morning and the first thing that hits you is the smell of freshly brewed coffee.

In the real world, that normally never happens and you have to trudge down to the nearest coffee shop in order to get a cup. Not ideal when you're still half asleep.

Well, enter the most amazing alarm clock in thee world.

Designed by Joshua Renouf, the delightful device is called the Barisieur and it's seriously every coffee lover's dream. Not only will it wake you up, the Barisieur will boil the water, pour it over your grinds, keep your milk cold, and gather up your sugar. Mmm hmm.

However it might be a while until you have this sitting on your bedside locker because it's currently still in development for mass retail. You can preorder it though, via a waitlist on Renouf's site

And another bit of bad news, it's kinda very expensive, and will set you back about $300 to $380 (€270 – €340).

I guess trekking down to the coffee shop is just going to have to do for now.

If you just need a cup of coffee in the morning, there's nothing that can pull you away from it.

We're so used to hearing about everything that's bad for you, so it's refreshing to see that new research has been done that says coffee can actually be good for your heart.

A study carried out in York University tracked nearly 4,000 heart-attack survivors and analysed their daily eating and drinking habits.

It found that patients who drank one or two cups of coffee a day were 20 per cent less likely to die from a heart-related illness than those who drank no coffee at all.

Now, of course more research needs to be done, but we're happy that there's some good news today rather than more research telling us to stay away from our favourite things.

These days avoiding dairy is easier and more popular than ever before.  But whether you're lactose intolerant or simply not mad about milk, it is super frustrating that one of the world’s most prominent coffee chains doesn’t do an almond-based alternative.

With the rise of nut milks – which are widely viewed as healthier and better tasting than soy – it seems like every decent coffee shop is offering almond milk lattes, cappuccinos and macchiatos but, for whatever reason, until now Starbucks has stuck by soy.

To the cheers of the lactose intolerant everywhere, today Starbucks announced that this September almond milk will make its long-awaited debut on the coffee giant’s US menu.

The move comes after one of the most common suggestions on Starbucks’ customer request platform My Starbucks Idea was that almond milk should be made available.

Sadly Starbucks Ireland have yet to make a similar statement but since it’s coming to America, we’re hopeful the almond truck will be here soon.

There's nothing better than having a sweet treat with your morning (or afternoon, or evening) cup of coffee.

And whether you like to sneak a snack in daily (oops!) or just fancy having one every now and again, it's an indulgence like no other.

Here at Shemazing! HQ, we love a little goodie, so we've come up with our top 5 favourite treats to have with our cuppa joe:

Chocolate biscuit slice:

If we're being very naughty, we love a good chocolate biscuit cake slice. The gooey delicious chocolate mixed with the crunch of the biscuit is just too good. Pair that with coffee and you're in heaven.

Jacob's Caffe Di Milano:

The latest to Jacob's, the Caffe Di Milano range is unreal. The Italian style wafer (which is so light you wouldn't belive) mixed with your choice of either chocolate, hazelnut or vanilla filling is perfect to go with your cup of coffee or tea. You'll make your way through a whole pack and won't even notice.

A doughnut:

For days when we're really bold, there's nothing better than making our way through a juicy doughnut. Especially lately when we're spoiled for choice in Dublin, a doughnut is the perfect cheat day treat. YUM.

Biscuits (ALL the biscuits):

If you haven't noticed already we're obsessed with biscuits. Whether it's a plain biscuit, a chocolate biscuit or basically just anything to do with a biscuit, we're there. We're SO there.

Cupcakes:

Cupcakes in all shapes and sizes are just the BOMB. Icing, no icing, filling, fruit, cream – there's so many combinations and something to suit everyone in the office. Each one is a little bit different and that's why we love them. Also… lots of sugar.

Ah, we all know the deal. You're dying for a coffee, but the queue is so damn long.

It's frustrating, yes, but we don't think we'd become so impatient that we'd resort to THIS.

Two Canadian men have created a bracelet that lets caffeine seep into your skin. *Squirm*

"The Joule Caffeine Bracelet is a bracelet with a slot for you to snap on a transdermal caffeine patch," states the crowd funder site.

"These patches work in a similar fashion to a nicotine patch or other transdermal medication patches. The caffeine is administered gradually for a steady supply of caffeine and energy without any of the typical energy crashes, jitters or other negative effects of consuming your caffeine through beverages.”

This might sound (very) odd but caffeine is a catechin which means it's fat-soluble and small, which makes it easy to go in through the skin.

As good and scientific as this might sound, we're good with our latte. We're just going to have to put up with waiting in line.

We normally hear about the dangers of drinking a can of coke everyday, and generally, fizzy drinks are a big no-no because of their high sugar content.

But now, as it turns out our cup of high street coffee is waaaay worse. Three times worse, in fact.

A charity called Action on Sugar performed an analysis on 131 hot flavoured drinks from various coffee shops you'd see on the high street.

They found that 98 percent of the drinks tested would receive a red label for nutritional value since the content of sugar is so high.

The drink with the highest sugar content is Starbuck's venti hot mulled fruit with grape, chai orange and cinnamon. While this drink might make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside, it has a shocking 25 spoons of sugar in it.

A Starbuck's venti white chocolate mocha with cream has 18 spoons, while a regular hot chocolate has 15 spoons of sugar.

Costa cafe isn't much better, with an average of 9 spoons of sugar in each drink – the same as a can of Coke.

Graham MacGregor, the chairman of Action on Sugar, commented: "This is another example of the scandalous amount of sugar added to our food and drink. No wonder we have the highest rates of obesity in Europe."

So it might be time to stop your habit of that daily latte. Sorry, ladies…

Like many crazy trends, the cat café started in Japan, and again, like many crazy trends, we are totally digging it.

Who doesn't want to sit down with a cuppa tea and stroke cute, furry felines all day, huh?

Well, we all might be able to soon as a Kickstarter campaign has landed in Ireland, and if successful, it will see the first cat café opening in Dublin.

Georgia O Neill has a full plan for her business, but just needs a little money to get started.

Her goal is €35,000 which will be enough to get the business completely set up and people in the door.

She also is offering a range of awards, from discounted visits to personalised t-shirts.

If you want to learn more about Crazy Cat Café, here's the link to her campaign.

Let's be real, we all hated coffee when we first tried it. It's bitter and sour and not at all nice.

But then, as most adults, we ended up needing it and drinking it nearly every day of our lives.

But here, Buzzfeed asked a few kids to try a lovely cup of coffee, and let's just say… Well, let's just say they flat-out hated it. Except for one rather mature kid.

Watching this video will give you all the LOLs you need today:
