As the last few fireworks light up the sky and the Christmas sections in shops getting bigger by the day, it's safe to say that winter 2017 is officially here.

And with that, there is a definite chill in the air as temperatures look set to plummet over the weekend.

Tonight will see temperatures drop to lows of one to five degrees, with gusty northwest winds set for the Atlantic coasts.

Tomorrow will be a cool but bright day with sunny spells as well as the odd shower over the northern half of the country. Highs of seven to 11 degrees.

Sunday night will see temperatures drop back to between one and five degrees once again, with some grass frost expected for the eastern half of the country.

It's a similar story for the rest of the week, with a mixture of sunny spells and scattered showers.

Wrap up warm, ladies. It looks like we're in for a cold few months.

We are one step closer to finding a cure for the common cold and we have Irish researchers to thank.

Scientists from Trinity College Dublin are part of an international team which may have tapped into the cure for one of the most common viruses worldwide.

Published in the scientific journal, Nature Communications, the study looks at how viruses cause disease in humans.

Professor John O'Leary, the Chair of Pathology at Trinity College, revealed the team had discovered that an ancient cell-process in plants and mammals can have the same effect on viruses in humans.

"It's been around for a long time probably in excess 1.5 billion years," he said

"This is an extremely old conserved biologically process which is found in plants and we are aware that it also enhances viral disease in life.

"The identification of the protein but also precisely where it is in the cell is hugely important."

Here's hoping those seasonal sniffles will soon be a thing of the past.

Going back to work after a week or so off is hard enough, but having to figure out what to wear is a totally different story.

Some mornings it's so cold out, we literally want to drag our duvets with us (or just not get out of bed at all), but not to worry ladies, you don't have to look like a fluffy marshmallow everyday.

Here's some handy tips and tricks to keep you warm throughout the working day:

Having recently been linked to depression, often associated with weight gain and commonly blamed for breakouts, it’s safe to say the contraceptive pill has a bit of a bad rep.

But thankfully for its users, there could be one unusual benefit to taking progesterone only and combined pills – and no it’s not just the prevention of unplanned pregnancies.

Research conducted at the John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health suggests that the pill could help prevent common illnesses like the flu.

Taking female mice as participants, the study found that animals with higher levels of progesterone in their bodies had better functioning immune systems than those in possession of lower doses of the hormone.

Because progesterone is found in the majority of pills, those who’ve been prescribed the contraceptive could have boosted immune systems and therefore be better able to fight Winter ailments.

While it is still very early days, if the study’s findings are found to be applicable to humans, it would mean that the pill could have real benefits for parts of the body beyond the reproductive system.

Not only is it windy, rainy and generally horrible outside but to add insult to injury, it is also really REALLY cold.

We are all pretty much freezing all the time, but there is always that one person who is constantly colder than everyone else.

You know the ones, they come to the office in twenty five separate layers, hog all the heaters and can withstand the sweatiest nightclubs on the planet without breaking a sweat.

Sound familiar? Here is what it is like to be constantly cold.

1) You have resigned yourself to the fact that no matter what, your fingers will always be freezing.

2) Electric heaters are your everything.

3) You get in trouble at home for turning on the heating ALL the time.

4) You keep an hot water bottle close by at all times.

5) You can't deal when someone suggests you should sit outside.

6) Getting out of the shower is the most dreaded part of each and every day.

7) You have no going out clothes because you spend all your money on coats and knitwear. But your coat game is on POINT.

8) You would probably rather wet yourself than get out of your warm bed at 3am to go to the toilet.

9) You realise that living in this country is life playing a really cruel joke on you.

Cool with heavy rain: it could only be the October Bank Holiday weekend!

Yes, sadly Met Eireann isn’t the bringer of good news today – it has told the country that the weather outlook for the long weekend is somewhat bleak.

How bleak, you ask? Well, think the likes of hail, thunder, and freezing conditions at night.

Yup, temperatures will hover around the 10C mark – a good 5C colder than it is now – with plenty of rain showers spread throughout the country.

As meteorologist Joan Blackburn explained: “It looks like a cool weekend with showers in place on Saturday and on Sunday. Some of the showers are likely to be heavy.”

“The prospects aren‘t great,” she added.

Met Eireann furthermore explained: “Saturday and Sunday will be similar days with sunny spells and scattered showers developing in the afternoon with some heavy falls in places and a slight chance of thunder and hail.

“It will turn noticeably colder for the weekend as temperatures will only reach the low teens by day and will fall close to freezing by night with moderate to fresh westerly winds making it feel even colder.”

Summer '15 won't go down as one of the greats, granted (we love and miss you summer 1995) – and even the much-promised back-to-school surge of sunshine has largely failed to materialise.

Now there are mutterings that a Freezageddon to rival that of 2009/10 – a winter which was Ireland's worst in 50 years – is on the horizon.

Although meteorologists caution against making predictions too far in advance, in Britain there have been repeated warnings of a forthcoming El Nino phenomenon – a term used to describe specific atmospheric and oceanic conditions in the Pacific.

The natural effect is believed to occur around every two to seven years and it can have disastrous effects on the world’s weather system.

In this part of the world, it results in bitterly cold and snowy winters, although in Asia and Australia drought is a consequence, while the west coasts of North and South America can expect torrential rain.

Six years ago, heavy snow and ice caused traffic chaos in Ireland's cities, and grounded numerous aircraft.

If you’re anything like us then you probably don’t open your curtains or check the weather on your phone before you pick out your outfit.

And like us, that probably meant your morning went a little something like this…

1. “Ahh, a new day – I think I’ll wear that new light floral dress I bought. After all, it’s spring now!”

2. “So glad I don’t have to wear bulky woolly jumpers anymore, see ya winter!"

3. “A heavy coat? Nah, this light jacket will definitely do. Sure it’s not like it’s snowing HAHAHA”

4. “Boots or pumps? I think pumps, it hasn’t rained in a while after all!”

5. “I’m so glad I packed away all of my winter clothes this weekend, I mean, LOOK at all of this space!”

6. “Okay time to gooo…oh, it’s…snowing.” *runs back inside and changes*

7. "It's been winter for about seven months now, but that's okay, I'm resilient"

8. "I need a bloody holiday"

If you're not suffering from a cold or flu yourself, the person beside you in work probably is. It seems like it's the season EVERYONE is getting sick – so the time to take action is now!

This smoothie will help ward off that cold or flu with lots of greens and the superpowers of ginger.

This can be juiced or blended – whichever you prefer!

What you'll need:

  • Thumb-sized piece of ginger
  • Handful of spinach
  • 1 lemon
  • 1 orange
  • 1 apple
  • 1 carrot

What you'll need to do:

Peel the ginger, lemon, orange and carrot. If blending, place all ingredients into the blender, add a little water and ice and blend until smooth. If juicing, simply put all of the fruit and veg through the juicer and if you want, add a little water to dilute.

Colds, headcolds and flus are just the WORST.

From annoying sniffles and a niggle at the back of your throat to a fever and sweats; colds and flus can really bring us way down.

However, there are some things you can do to help avoid getting sick this autumn and boost that immunity to the max!

1. “I work out”
That’s right, exercise can help keep those pesky sniffles at bay – just another reason to get those runners on! Studies show that people who exercise on a regular basis get sick less often than those who do not.

2. “You can totally make friends with salad”
Don’t listen to them – fruit and veggies are one of your best bets against the common cold! Fresh produce will boost your immune system and keep sickness away. Garlic is also an amazing way to help boost your immune system against colds and flus because it is antiviral and anti-fungal – basically it’s magic. So eat it.

3. “Rub-a-dub-dub”
Keep some anti-viral gel in your bag or at your desk during cold and flu season. Sure, you may seem like a germ-phobe putting it on every time someone shakes your hand – but isn’t it better than the alternative?

4. “Zzzzz”
Make sure your sleep pattern is up to scratch as disturbances in our sleeping can really affect our health. Aim for 8-10 hours and you should be feeling fresh and perky.

5. “You’re not going out in that”
Now, we don’t want to sound like your parents but if you feel a cold coming on, going out with bare legs and wet hair isn’t going to help, is it?! Invest in a good winter coat and wrap up warm and cosy against the wind and rain.

If all else fails and you do come down with a cold…or even a cursed flu then grab that water bottle, a big blanket, a day off, lots of fluids and some Disney movies and you'll be right as rain as soon as you know it!

It’s also good if you don’t like putting ice in your drink and don’t have all day for it to cool down in the fridge!
