Cork

A teenager fell two-and-a-half metres from a three-storey building in Cork at 2.30am yesterday – and now has suspected serious spinal injuries.

Ciara O’Brien was on a night-out with her friends at the newly-opened The Moorings venue in Kinsale; a beach-themed bash was being held to mark the end of summer.

Following the incident, the 18-year-old was taken to Cork University Hospital, but has now been airlifted to the specialist spinal injuries unit at the Mater in Dublin.

Ciara had only recently celebrated her Debs and sat her Leaving Cert at Kinsale Community School. Friends told the Irish Sun that they and her family are “devastated and shocked” by what happened.

The full extend of her injuries is still being accessed by doctors in Dublin.

Kinsale Cllr Kevin Murphy, who knows the family, also told the Irish Sun: “It’s a terrible shock for all her relatives.

“You don’t expect such a dreadful thing to happen when a young girl is out socialising.

“The family are devastated and are praying she’ll make a full recovery.

“We don’t know the extent of her injuries, we’ll find that out over the coming days.

“They don’t know how bad it is yet.

“She is a gorgeous young girl. Her family are the nicest people you could ever meet — they are salt of the earth.

“It’s very upsetting for the whole Kinsale area. The family are very well-known in the locality and all our thoughts are with them.”

Gardai have now launched an investigation and a garda spokesman has confirmed: “An 18-year-old girl fell from the flat roof of a licenced premises on Market Street in Kinsale early on Saturday.

Beach party kicks off in 3 and a half hours! Why not come in fancy dress and you could win a holiday for 2!

“She was taken to Cork University Hospital and was subsequently transferred to the Mater Hospital in Dublin. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.”

The Moorings nightclub only reopened last month under new ownership.

Business continued as normal at the venue last night with the second of their beach-themed bashes taking place as planned.

Declan Ryan of The Moorings last night explained to the Sunday World: “It was simply just a freak accident,” adding: “It was just an accident. She fell about 8 foot [2.5metres] from the side of the building.

"It wasn’t in the club it was beside it.”

He also said that he had met with Gardai and that all the staff at the venue were “hoping and praying she will be OK”.

Is it just us, or is Christmas actually getting earlier every year? Well, if Brown Thomas in Dublin, Cork and Limerick is anything to go by… the festive season is already here.

Yes, a full four months before the man with the bag arrives in Ireland, the famed department store has kicked off a spot of Yuletide joy.

For 2015 the Christmas Market is, according to Brown Thomas, "filled with Christmas trees and trim, seasonal decorations and festive food".

"We’ve actually been working on this year's Christmas Market since Christmas last year," BTs also said in a statement today.

And they reckon that they need to launch the market at this time of year to satisfy "customer demand".

"Plenty of shoppers are keen to get organised early," it maintains. "Generally we find that there’s a great response from customers to opening in August especially tourists who are eager to buy pieces they can’t get at home."

The themes for this year’s Christmas Market at Brown Thomas include Ice Palace, Venetian Winter, I Love Candy, and Santa’s Journey.

Ho, ho, ho? Or just bah, humbug?

We're four months away still – a full four months and a bit in fact (we just counted).

But that hasn't stopped one department store from getting into the spirit of things.

In fact, Brown Thomas in Dublin, Cork and Limerick are all unveiling their Christmas markets on Thursday – yes, that's August 20.

Each store apparently has a "dedicated space," which has now been transformed into "a festive Christmas market – filled with Christmas trees and trim, beautiful decorations, crackers and festive food".

And the themes for this year’s BT markets (just so you're in the know) include Ice Palace; Venetian Winter; I Love Candy and Santa’s Journey.

Hmmm, we reckon we'll still probably end up doing most of our shopping at the last minute (circa December 23).

Ho, ho, ho!

Music, film, theatre and poetry. Oh yeah, and there’s literature, exhibitions, symposiums and interventions. Not to mention walks, talks, workshops and dance. Or does a spectacular torch-lit parade tickle your fancy?

All of the above – and more – are taking place from today until Sunday week at the celebrated Skibbereen Arts Festival; meaning there are ten full days of fun to indulge in if you’re in the Cork area.

The Mad Pride Family Day, for example, takes place this Sunday, July 26. It will bring together local families with the aim of breaking down stigma surrounding mental illness – and involves a load of fun and entertainment: musicians, puppeteers, circus performers, face painters, arts and crafts facilitators, and artisan food producers will all be there, creating a carnival-like atmosphere.

And movie buffs will be happy to hear that Song Of The Sea will showcase on Monday. An Oscar-nominated Irish animation film directed by Tom Moore, the story is inspired by the mythological Selkies of Irish folklore. It also features the voices Brendan Gleeson, Pat Short, Lisa HanniganFionnula Flanagan, and David Rawle.

Meanwhile, following on from the phenomenal success of last year’s inaugural staging, 4 Plays In A Day returns to Skibbereen – with the town itself becoming a stage for the day with four excellent plays by four different companies taking place in four different venues.

Tomorrow week, there will be an exploration of the life and times of Alan Lomax, one of the world’s greatest song collectors. He is most famous for his work around the Mississippi Delta, but he also travelled to the Caribbean, various parts of Europe, and North Africa.

Saturday, August 1 marks the 100th anniversary of his birth, so the Skibbereen Arts Festival along with host Donal Dineen will celebrate his legacy – in the company of well-known singers and musicians including David Kitt, Cian Nugent, and Liz Clarke.

Last night the crowds in Cork were treated to an amazing performance from Ellie Goulding at the Marquee.

And shortly afterwards, a local Garda couldn’t believe he was the lucky one who got to get Ellie into a pair of handcuffs.

Shiiiiit….

After a most eventful night in Cork, the Starry Eyed singer took to Instagram to document her run-in with one of Ireland’s finest.

Always endeavouring to keep things of the highest professional standard, the official Garda Twitter account checked in to make sure Ellie was treated well.

Clearly the singer was doing just fine as she later shared a photograph from her room at the five star Haymarket Hotel (ooo, fancy).

Obviously delighted with her show, and not at all phased by her brush with the law, Ellie shared a photograph of her team before the gig and couldn’t stop talking about what a great time she was having.

Cork I loved that so much… THANK YOU! here's us all nervous pre show, me and my beautiful team!

Ellie has played here on numerous occasions and this time she even chose to debut her new pink hair while visiting.

We’re wondering though, what would Ellie do to get herself arrested? Or even better, how would she have gotten herself out of trouble?

Offering up a free snack box can apparently do wonders when in tricky situations. Or she probably just crooned a sweet little tune and strutted off into the night.

Maybe someday we’ll be enlightened by the lucky Garda himself, it’s sure to be a good one.

The former Ireland international rugby star and his fiancé of one year tied the knot day in Marbella.

The pair got engaged this time last year in Barbados. Peter got down on one knee at the five-star hotel Sandy Lane – incidently the same place where Tiger Woods married his now ex-wife Elin Nordegren in 2004.

The former model from Cork and wore a beautiful tight-fitting dress with a fishtail and long veil. She also shared a photo of her fabulous LK Bennett shoes on Instagram.

Her new husband and former Munster player chose navy for his suit, and a pale pink tie. The bridesmaid wore a lust-worthy pair of Jimmy Choo heels with her beige below-the-knee dress.

Nadia Forde, Paul O’Connell and Donncha O’Callaghan were among the high-profile guests who joined the happy couple for their Big Day.

While the couple have decided to postpone their honeymoon until later in the year, they will be spending the rest of the week enjoying their newly wedded bliss in sunny southern Spain.

On its way to Dingle via Kinsale and Balitmore, one rather spectacular yacht supposedly named Air has been spotted leaving Cork Harbour.

At 80metres in length and boasting four storeys as well as a helipad, it costs a cool €750,000 to stay on each week, according to local radio station, Red FM.

And – most excitingly of all – George Clooney is widely rumoured to be on board.

George, who's family emigrated from Co. Kilkenny after The Famine, was also spotted in the area back in 2012 when he stayed in Cobh for a short springtime break.

Earlier this year, he hinted that a trip to his ancestral home was in the offing.

He told the Irish Independent in January he was “embarrassed” that, despite his roots, he’d never had the chance to visit Ireland properly.

“I’ve been talking about going there for years,” he added. “And Bono has been trying to get me to do a bike ride around Ireland with him.

“I’m definitely going to make a visit this summer.”

Just last week, the 54-year-old took Amal, his wife of eight-months, home to his native Kentucky.

Mr and Mrs Clooney were back for a family reunion — and their presence understandably sent locals into an excited frenzy.

A month ago, it was furthermore revealed that human rights lawyer Amal would be in Belfast during June to meet some of the 14 men who claim they were tortured by the British Army in Northern Ireland in the 1970s.

She was brought on to the case by Belfast-based solicitors Kevin R Winters and Co.

George and Amal married in a glitzy €10m celebration in Venice last September. They had been dating for year prior to their nuptials, and were engaged in April 2014.

Elite Singles decided to find out which county in Ireland has the most attractive single people – as perceived by themselves that is.

Asking 47,300 single people across the country, the study showed that people in Dublin are the most likely to consider themselves ‘sexy’ – closely followed by Greystones, Limerick, Cork and Galway.

If you’re looking for a more modest single Irish man, you may want to head to Kilkenny, which came in at number 10, followed by Clonakilty in West Cork, Wicklow, Naas and Swords.

Hmm, unfortunately this information can’t tell us if Dublin is where all of the attractive singles are – or just where all of the cocky singles are…

We reckon we'd take our chances in Kilkenny!

It’s almost that day of the year again and we are getting very excited!

While the annual St. Patrick’s Festival will take place in Dublin on March 17th, there is also so much going on around the country for you to check out as well.

Where will you spend the most Irish day of the year this 17th March?

Cork

From tasty treats at the festival market to The Lee Sessions keeping Irish traditional music alive in the pubs of Cork, this will be a weekend to remember!

Limerick
The St. Patrick’s Day weekend events in Limerick city are every bit as exciting as people hit the races on Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th with the Limerick International Band Championship hitting the streets on Sunday. Tuesday will see not only the parade captivating interest by all, but also Limerick’s beloved Milk Market which will open on St. Patrick’s Day for a non-alcoholic celebration of food, crafts and music.

Galway
This year, the Galway parade’s theme is celebrating ‘Galway’s Cultural and Creative Community’. Not only will the World’s Strongest Man be in attendance but the Galway Community Circus will feature in the parade too!

Belfast
Belfast’s St. Patrick’s Day parade is set to be a lively affair indeed! Not only will Blue’s Simon Webbe be headlining at a free concert at Custom House Square, but Louis Walsh’s band Homeland will also take to the stage! If the boozy atmosphere is something you are trying to avoid this St. Patrick’s Day, there is also a free event in Custom House Square from 1pm-3pm.

A couple who got engaged at Cork’s Fota Wildlife Park have seen their sweet story go viral over the last two days.

Grace Fanning, an Irish naval officer, dropped to one knee to propose to her girlfriend of seven years, Carol Brady. The beautiful moment Carol said yes was caught on camera and the photos were posted by Fota, who have claimed them to be their most liked post so far! We can't say we are surprised by that!

The proposal took place in front of the giraffes, Carol’s favourite animal and Grace has said they are delighted with the reaction: “It was fairly emotional alright but the reaction has been incredible.” Such a sweet story – apparently even the ladies' tour guide, Leslie cried!

The couple hope to tie the knot in 2016 following this year’s same-sex marriage referendum.

The 5th annual Irish Redhead Convention is getting started this evening in Crosshaven, Co. Cork, and it sounds like it’s going to be LOADS of craic.

They have a carrot tossing competition, the best red eyebrows competition and let’s not forget the most freckles per squared inch competition. There’s even speed dating if you fancy bagging yourself a redhead!

The festival is a fundraiser for the Irish Cancer Society, so it’s for a good cause too. And all you non-redheads are more than welcome too, by the way.

We wonder if any of our famous friends will be showing their faces… Here are some of our favourite celebs with red hair – sorry, we mean strawberry blonde!

When Christina Hendricks was told to dye her hair red for her modelling career, she wasn't so sure, but it worked out pretty well! "I booked two or three jobs, because were a lot fewer redheads than blondes, and I was like, this is working for me, I’m keeping this!"

We love Emma Stone, and she loves being a redhead! "I’m blonde at the roots but red at heart.”

We were always so jealous of Debra Messing's red, curly hair!

Thank God Nicola Roberts stopped dying her hair brown and wearing fake tan – she looks WAY better when she goes natural!

Ed Sheeran is another one who says his red hair helped his career! "Being ginger can seem like a bad thing when you are young but as a musician it has been my saving grace – because if you see a ginger kid on TV and there is only one messy-haired ginger kid who plays guitar, it is very easy to find them on YouTube."
