Some sad news from the literary world today – author Harper Lee has sadly died aged 89.

While there has been no official word from the Lee family yet, US news site AL.com has cited multiple sources in the author's hometown of Monroeville, Alabama.

Just last July a sequel to Lee's beloved To Kill A Mockingbird was published, Go Set A Watchman, telling the story of an older Scout as she sees her father Atticus through an adult's eyes.

Millions of young readers have cut their teeth on To Kill A Mockingbird since its publication in 1960, and even here in Ireland it is still on the reading list for Junior Cert students.

Given Lee's Alabama upbringing as the youngest daughter of a lawyer, it's no surprise that To Kill A Mockingbird is considered by many to be a partly autobiographical novel. Born Nelle Harper Lee in 1926, the author was the youngest of four children.

Tributes for the late author are already flooding in on social media today:

A young woman has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the discovery of the bodies of two young children.

The exact age of the youngsters is still unknown, but the suspect is believed to be 24-years of age.

No one else is currently being sought in connection with the deaths.

Police in England found the children with stab wounds after they were called to an address in Bradford, West Yorkshire, at 11.28am.

A spokesman said law enforcement was contacted after paramedics attended a call-out.

Both children received treatment at the scene but were pronounced dead a short time later, police said.

Inquiries are continuing.

Star of the likes of Miracle On 34th Street, and The Quiet Man, actress Maureen O'Hara has died in her sleep at her Beverly Hills home.

Often described as one of the last remaining members of the Golden Age Of Hollywood, Ms O'Hara, the second of six children, was born on Beachwood Ave in Ranelagh in Dublin.

She joined the Rathmines Theatre Club aged 10 and later trained with the Abbey Theatre.

Also a firm fan of Shamrock Rovers until her death, Maureen had homes in Bantry in Cork and St Croix in the US Virgin Islands.

Just last year she was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Oscar by the Academy, and is especially fondly remembered for her half a dozen on-screen partnerships with John Wayne.

"Maureen was our loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend.

"She passed peacefully surrounded by her loving family as they celebrated her life listening to music from her favourite movie, The Quiet Man," said a statement from her family earlier today.

Still a teenager, she arrived in Hollywood in 1939 to star in The Hunchback Of Notre Dame, but found real fame with How Green Is My Valley two years later – a film which went on to win five Oscars.

Maureen also often starred in colourful pirate adventures such as The Black Swan with Tyrone Power, The Spanish Main with Paul Henreid, and Sinbad The Sailor with Douglas Fairbanks Jr.

One of her earliest movies was Alfred Hitchcock's maritime-tinged Jamaica Inn.

Indeed, she often spoke highly of the iconic director recalling that she "never experienced the strange feeling of detachment with Hitchcock that many other actors claimed to have felt while working with him".

She is furthermore much-loved for her part in 1961's The Parent Trap alongside Hayley Mills. Her final performance was in The Last Dance, a 2000 TV movie.

Her manager said she had “a wicked sense of humour and never took her good fortunes for granted.” Johnny Nicoletti added: “She was a classy, warm, feisty, funny woman and she was always so proudly Irish.”

Ms O’Hara will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery near Washington DC, next to her husband, the US Navy pilot General Charles Blair who died in a plane crash in 1978.

She had been married twice before she met Charles, and had one child – a daughter, Bronwyn, whose father was the director William Houston Price.

She died without ever revealing, even to her closest friends and family, one of Hollywood’s most famous secrets: what she whispered in John Wayne’s ear at the end of The Quiet Man to elicit the shocked reaction that director John Ford had sought from the star.

Following a post-mortem examination at Cork University Hospital, a number of packages have been recovered from the stomach of a young man who died on board an Aer Lingus plane.

The 24-year-old Brazilian national, whom independent.ie has named as John Santos Gurjao, fell ill on Lisbon-Dublin flight EI 485.

He reportedly became “extremely violent” – even biting a fellow passenger who attempted to restrain him – before falling unconscious and dying.

The packages have now been sent for forensic analysis. RTÉ News reports that at least one of them was ruptured. They are believed to have contained cocaine totaling around 800g in weight and worth €55,000 on the street.

A Garda spokesman confirmed late last night: “The post-mortem has taken place. A number of packages have been recovered and have been forwarded for forensic examination. The toxicology results are awaited.”

The flight was diverted to Cork with the pilots citing a “medical emergency,” and requesting permission to make an unscheduled landing.

This morning, gardaí continue to question a 44-year old Portuguese woman who was also on the same flight. It is believed that 2kg of a powdered substance has already been recovered from her luggage.

RTÉ says she has been living in Dublin for several years and is involved in a number of businesses, including offering herself as a consultant to non-EU residents seeking visas to work and study in Ireland.

The post mortem was conducted by Assistant State Pathologist Dr Margot Bolster, who has now also ordered further toxicology tests.

In an astonishingly account, John Leonard, who was also on the same plane, has yesterday told Cork's 96fm that the Brazilian man was "on the ground shaking violently" prior to his death.

He went on to explain: "The noise he was making was like something I have never heard before.

"It's not something you'd hear everyday. It was like deep anguish is the best way I could describe it, very, very troubled.

"Not screaming in a sense, you know if you'd hurt yourself or something, just very guttural, from deep within him."

Mr Leonard furthermore said that it was a "very violent end". He stated: "To die that way in the back of an aeroplane, it's not right. It was not very pleasant at all."

He may have been given a five year sentence following a sensational trial last year, but this evening convicted killer Oscar Pistorius has been permitted to pack up his belongings and leave his prison cell.

Spending just 11 months inside, he departed from the Pretoria Central Prison a day earlier than planned in order to thwart waiting media.

He has now made his way to his uncle's house, where he will spend time under house arrest.

The former Olympian killed his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp at his upmarket Pretoria home in February 2013. He was charged with murder but ultimately convicted of culpable homicide – which is largely akin to manslaughter.

Pistorius was due to be released two months ago, but international outcry at the brevity of his jail-time encouraged South African officials to intervene at the 11th hour.

Furthermore, with an appeal currently lodged with the Supreme Court, the 28-year-old will find out on November 3 if his sentence will be upgraded to that of murder – a conviction which would see him return to prison for at least 15 years.

Cape Town native Ms Steenkamp was 29 when her boyfriend shot her dead. He has always claimed he believed her to be an intruder.

A model and reality TV star, she also studied law at university and hoped to practise once she was called to the bar.

Her relatives have said they believe Pistorius is "getting off lightly" and that the time he served is "not enough for taking a life".

Gardai allegedly found 2kg of a powdered substance in her luggage and she is currently being detained under the Drug Trafficking Act, according to RTE News.

The Irish Mirror reports that the crew yesterday evening broadcast an emergency Pan Pan message three times in quick succession and advised air traffic controllers of an incident on board the Airbus A320-200.

The pilot requested clearance to divert and land at Cork Airport, telling controllers that there was a man “running amok” and that he had “injured one or two passengers”.

It is also understood there was a doctor and two nurses on board who tried to assist the restrained passenger.

In an astonishingly account, John Leonard, who was also on the plane, told Cork's 96fm that the Brazilian man was "on the ground shaking violently".

He went on to explain: "The noise he was making was like something I have never heard before. It's not something you'd hear everyday. It was like deep anguish is the best way I could describe it, very, very troubled.

Mr Leonard furthermore said that it was a "very violent end". He stated: "To die that way in the back of an aeroplane, it's not right. It was not very pleasant at all."

All 168 passengers and six crew members were removed from the plane in Cork while gardai, airport paramedics and an ambulance rushed to the scene.

The passenger who suffered from the bite was also taken to hospital as a precaution.

The Irish Mirror adds that although the dead man wasn't Irish he “may have been studying in the country”.

Describing the incident as a “medical emergency,” Aer Lingus said last night in a statement: “Flight EI 485 Lisbon to Dublin diverted into Cork due to a medical emergency on board.

“There were 168 guests and six crew members on board. The flight landed safely at 17.40 local time.”

Fans of Jim Carrey have been taking to social media this evening to express their shock at the passing of his girlfriend, Cathriona White.

The 28-year-old Tipperary-native had moved to Hollywood in 2009 to work as a make-up artist and had met the high-profile actor on a movie set in 2012.

Sadly, reports from the US this afternoon say that Ms White has taken her own life.

According to TMZ, she was found dead by friends last night and it has been furthermore reported that she had left a suicide note addressed to Mr Carrey.

Now, in a heartfelt statement, Jim has responded to the tragedy.

“I am shocked and deeply saddened by the passing of my sweet Cathriona,” he said.

“She was a truly kind and delicate Irish flower, too sensitive for this soil, to whom loving and being loved was all that sparkled.”

The 53-year-old added: “My heart goes out to her family and friends and to everyone who loved and cared about her.

“We have all been hit with a lightning bolt.”

Just a week ago, the talented make-up artist had dined at Malibu's upmarket Nobu restaurant.

Ms White also recently travelled to Canada – taking to Instagram to thank the Irish consulate in San Franciso for renewing her passport promptly. And earlier this year, she had shared a snap of her proudly wearing her Tipperary hurling jersey around LA.

Her most recent post was from just five days ago when she uploaded a wind-swept black-and-white snap for her 7,500 followers.

Underneath the image, people have this evening been leaving their condolences.

"Sweet Dreams @littleirishcat may flights of angels sing you to your rest xxx shocked," one sympathiser wrote.

Another said, "RIP young lady. May you find peace at last."

Meanwhile a third person stated: "At dheis Dé go bhfuil a anam. Had the pleasure of playing football with Caitríona, she was a loyal, kind and caring girl.

"Her heart was always in the right place. So sorry to hear of her loss my sympathies to all family and friends xx Rest in peace a stór."

They've been dating on/off since meeting on a movie set three years ago – and in recent months Cathriona White and Hollywood star Jim Carrey had rekindled their romance.

Tragically, however, reports from the US now say that Ms White has taken her own life.

She was aged just 28 and originally hailed from Cappawhite in Co Tipperary.

Police in Californian have told TMZ that after responding to a call last night, LAPD officers went to a local residence and discovered Cathriona's body.

It is believed that she was originally found by two concerned friends and a TMZ source added that Ms White left a suicide note addressed to Mr Carrey.

Cathriona had tweeted last Thursday: "Signing off Twitter, I hope I have been a light to my nearest and dearest."

US law enforcement reportedly believe she may have died from a drugs' overdose: pills were discovered next to her body.

She and 53-year-old Jim met in 2012 while she was working as a make-up artist.

They originally dated for more than a year before breaking-up. They then began seeing each other in May of this year but are believed to have split again in the last few days.

Cathriona trained as a beauty therapist in Ireland before moving to Hollywood in 2009.

It is the shocking image that began to emerge yesterday afternoon on social media: a small boy in blue trousers, a red t-shirt, and pair of smart black Velcro runners.

He was seen lying face down in the sand on a beach in Bodrum, a coastal area of Turkey popular with Irish tourists.

The three-year-old toddler, later named as Aylan Kurdi, had drowned – along with a dozen others.

Fleeing the violence of their home in Syria, Aylan and his family were attempting to reach Greece across the Aegean Sea at the time of his death.

The small boat on which they were travelling would have been loaded with migrants before setting off at 2am yesterday from the coast of Turkey.

Aylan, of course, never made it. Nor did his five-year-old elder brother, Galip, or their mother, Rehan. Two people remain unaccounted for; the youngest victim is a nine-month-old baby.

The short journey amounts to just 20km, but none of the passengers were wearing life-jackets, and once tossed into the sea, the children in particular stood little chance of survival.

The only remaining member of the family, the children’s father, Abdullah, had to make a series of unspeakably grim phone-calls to relatives yesterday.

He reportedly could only say: “My wife and two boys are dead,” before breaking down in grief.

Despite the presumed hardship of their young lives – the family lived in the ISIS-besieged Syrian city of Kobane – evidently the Kurdi boys enjoyed moments of happiness too: heartbreaking photographs of the pair emerged this morning.

One shows them smiling warmly while posing for the camera; Galip with his arm around Alyan.

A second snap shows the boys laughing with a large teddy bear between them.

Today, newspapers throughout Europe are dominated by the image of Alyan’s body – many front pages show him being carried gently from the shoreline by a member of the Turkish police force.

Indeed, the photograph is being compared to other historically significant and pivotal images from the 20th century: the stark picture of a burning Phan Thi Kim Phúc taken during the Vietnamese War, as well as the photo used on the cover of TIME magazine showing Muslim prisoners peering through barbed wire during the Srebrenica Genocide.

Social media has been particularly vocal too, with hundreds of thousands of tweets being posted calling for European nations – including Ireland – to do more to alleviate the crisis.

Speaking on RTE’s Morning Ireland today, Minister Brendan Howlin admitted that as a nation we now must “step up to the plate,” to help those refugees fleeing from Syria.

“It’s a world issue,” he said. “And we need to have a world response with a real sense of solidarity.”

Calling it “one of the most challenging issues for human-kind right now,” he concluded: “Seeing the bodies of young children on the shores of Europe is so shocking – and we can’t let that lie.”

Ireland has so far committed to taking 600 refugees between now and 2017.

This year, Germany, which has been at the forefront of campaigning on behalf of displaced peoples from the Middle East, will take 800,000.

Friends, family and colleagues have been taking to social media to pay tributes to Govan Jolliffe-Byrne – the young Irishman who died in East Africa over the weekend.

Backpacking with friends in Tanzania, the 20-year-old Dubliner fell off a balcony at a nightclub in the coastal town of Tanga early this morning, the Irish Mirror reports.

Govan left Ireland for his East African trip in June and was expected to return shortly to resume his studies in Maynooth.

The Foreign Affairs department has been in touch with the Irish embassy in Dar es Salaam, and is in contact with his family.

Tanga sits on the Indian Ocean close to the Kenyan border. It is popular for its proximity to the islands of Zanzibar – where Govan was also spending time – and Pemba.

Alexander Pacteau has pleaded guilty to the murder of Irish student Karen Buckley in April this year.

Pacteau was charged with the murder of the 24-year-old north Cork woman a week after she disappeared from a Glasgow nightclub on April 12.

A massive search attempted to locate Karen after her worried friends reported her missing, but tragically her remains were discovered four days later on a farm on the outskirts of the city.

Privately-educated Pacteau, 21, appeared in Glasgow High Court this morning. Ms Buckley's father John, mother Marian and brothers Brendan, Kieran and Damian are all also in court for the proceedings.

They are being supported by Mourneabbey, Co Cork parish priest, Fr Joe O’Keeffe, and a Garda liaison officer.

His guilty plea now means he faces a mandatory life sentence in prison.

Read out in court before the Honorable Justice Lady Rae, the indictment against him states: “You Alexander Pacteau aka Alexander Barr on 12 April in motor vehicle registration no. EY05 VVR at Kelvin Way, Glasgow did assault Karen Buckley, formerly of Glasgow Caledonian University, repeatedly strike her on the head and body with a spanner and compress her neck and you did murder her.”

It earlier emerged that Pacteau, who had been drinking heavily at the time, had first attempted to strangle the University Of Limerick nursing graduate in his car before battering her to death with a spanner, striking her head up to 13 times.

He later desperately tried to cover his tracks, placing his victim's body in a blue plastic barrel and filling it up with 40 litres of caustic soda – a strong chemical used in the likes of drain cleaner.

Pacteau then hid the barrel in a storage shed on an isolated farm 10km north of the city.

Karen was studying for a Masters degree in Occupational Therapy at Glasgow Caledonia University at the time of her murder.

Following the tragic death of his daughter, Bobbi Kristina Brown, musician Bobby Brown has spoken publicly for the first time.

"Krissy was and is an angel. I am completely numb at this time," the singer, 46, said in a statement today. "My family must find a way to live with her in spirit and honor her memory.

"Our loss is unimaginable."

He added: "We thank everyone for the prayers for Krissy and our family as we mourn my baby girl."

Bobbi Kristina was aged just 22 when she died a hospice facility in Atlanta yesterday.

On January 31, she was found unresponsive face-down in a bath-tub at the townhouse she once shared with her late mother, Whitney Houston. Police believe she was underwater for anywhere between two and five minutes.

Her father's words come as TMZ reports that the investigation into the circumstances that led to the young woman's death has just been made one of murder.

Law enforcement sources told the website that police believe foul play was involved. Bobbi Kristina's boyfriend, Nick Gordon, continues to be a person of interest.

Ms Brown was surrounded by her family at the time of her death.

"Yesterday Bobbi Kristina Brown took her place in heaven," lawyers for Mr Brown also said in a statement today. "Krissy fought to get well for months, however she has [succumbed] to her injuries."

Following his daughter's death, PEOPLE reported via a family source that Bobby contacted loved ones to share the news himself.

"He is holding it together more than you'd expect," the source furthermore explained. "He knew it was coming.

"Of course he's very emotional, but at the same time, he knows that Krissy is in a better place now.

"He is taking comfort in the fact that she's with her mother and that there will be no more sadness or pain. She is at peace. He knows that and is taking comfort in that."

The Houston-Brown family had confirmed the death yesterday via a statement.

"Bobbi Kristina Brown passed away July 26, 2015, surrounded by her family," it read.

"She is finally at peace in the arms of God. We want to again thank everyone for their tremendous amount of love and support during these last few months."
