There is nothing worse than nursing a killer hangover, and while the headache and dry mouth are bad enough, the hangover shakes are torture.

Shakiness is one of the ultimate giveaways that you've been hitting the G&Ts the night before, and truly gives life to the phrase: "I'm shook."

While we know we can put our banging headache down to dehydration and our sore muscles down to thinking we can twerk after a few beverages, we've often wondered: What actually causes shakiness during a hangover?

"The tremors and the sweats come from an overactive sympathetic nervous system; they’re withdrawal symptoms," Dr Alastair O'Brien from The London Clinic told Cosmo.

This is why the hair of the dog works so well, because you are essentially giving the body what it is craving.

"The hair of the dog will temporarily make you feel a bit better because some of the symptoms you are experiencing are a direct withdrawal effect," explained the doctor.

"After the first drink you feel like Superwoman; you feel brilliant, your sweats and shakes go away."

"After the second drink you’re back down where you were before. Your body is feeling bad for a reason, so listen to it!"

Your body is essentially "coming down" from all of the alcohol that you pumped into it the night before.

So, pints of water all around?

We've pretty much given up on hangover cures. Sure, you have a few remedies that make a banging headache and sick stomach better, but all in all, it takes a good day or so for a hangover to go away.

Why do we put ourselves through it?!

Well, we may not have to put ourselves through it anymore because students in Yale have created SunUp, which will apparently banish the morning-after aches and pains

The product is a powdered, citrus flavoured supplement that you dissolve in water. However, you don't take it the morning after.

Nope, you take it before you even go out drinking.

The pharmaceutical team, Margaret Morse, a major in Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology and Liam McClintock, a competitive athlete, made a chart to show you how the powder works.

Unfortunately, SunUp is still in the crowdfunding stages, so it might be a while before we get our hands on it.

December killed us. We're totally broke, our livers have gone into crisis, and we just had to endure our first week back to work. Ouch.

Many people decide to try some self control in January, which mostly means, they won't even step inside the local on a Friday night for the entire month.

But, as it turns out, drinking in the pub with your mates is very good for you.

According to new research released by Oxford University, having a couple of pints or G&Ts with friends will improve your overall wellbeing.

The study, which was published in the Adaptive Human Behaviour and Psychology journal, found that people who had a regular pint in their local were happier and more satisfied with their lives.

Professor Robin Dunbar, who conducted the study, said: “This study showed that frequenting a local pub can directly affect peoples’ social network size and how engaged they are with their local community, which in turn can affect how satisfied they feel in life.

"Pubs traditionally have a role as a place for community socialising, alcohol’s role appears to be in triggering the endorphin system, which promotes social bonding.

“Like other complex bonding systems such as dancing, singing and storytelling, [going to the pub] has often been adopted by large social communities as a ritual associated with bonding.”

Dry January is over then, yeah?

Olly Murs appeared in the Late Late Show last night and revealed what it's really like to go out partying with Niall Horan.

The singer gushed about his friend, saying that he feels like he's Niall's big brother.

“He’s brilliant, me and Niall met in 2010, when he was doing X Factor, and we’ve been mates ever since.

“Over the years, me and Niall just became really good pals. In this job, you just click with certain people, and we just got on really well, and I’m just kind of like his big brother, really."

And when it comes to going out, well, let's just say Olly can't really keep up.

“The last time I went out with Niall properly was in London, and all I remember is, he’s got his mates that come out and they’re all Irish as well – and you guys can drink!

“And I thought ‘aw yeah I can drink’ – but, no chance.

“And we went out, and I remember it was such a good night that we walked out and it was daylight, and we were like ‘oh my God, it’s like 6 o’clock in the morning'."

And when asked about the ladies: “We go out, we meet ladies, of course, yeah. A couple.”

Well, they are very lucky ladies.

Let's face it, Marnie Simpson has made her career from going out, guzzling down and getting 'mortal'.

But it looks like the hard partying lifestyle is taking its toll on the reality star's body after she was recently rushed to hospital.

Opening up about her experience in her column for Star magazine, the 24-year-old admitted that professionals fear her symptoms stem from excessive alcohol consumption.

"I was rushed to hospital last week with a kidney infection and kidney stones." she wrote.

"My kidneys aren’t working properly and doctors think it could be from drinking too much alcohol," Marnie revealed in a candid assessment of her hospital stay.

Marnie, who recently told Twitter followers that her 'body was giving up' on her, explained that she had been out with a  former co-star when she was unable to continue socialising.

"I went out with Charlotte Crosby last week and only lasted an hour because I had no energy," Marnie explained.

Thankfully, Marnie's mum, who championed her throughout her controversial stint in the Celebrity Big Brother house, is currently on hand.

It's a common thing. More common than you think.

Say you're heading out on a Saturday night. You all meet in your friend's house, and when the drinks run out, you haven't a notion where to head to next.

Or, you've been drinking in the local since you left work and it's time for the small pub to close. Where to head to next? No idea.

Do these scenarios seem familar? If yes, then there's a new app here to help you out. Yay!

Dublin Pub Finder will help you find the perfect pub in the city centre based on your preferences.

Want some live music? No problem. Some craft beer? Gotcha. Maybe a cocktail? You're sorted.

The app lets you search for what you want, and will then offer you a list of pubs that suit what you're looking for.

And as well as that, the app also comes with rating, reviews, a map to the location and directions.

Your Saturday night has just been sorted.

It has been claimed that Lamar Odom paid a visit to an Irish pub the night before Easter.

TMZ shared photos of Lamar and two other men at Johnny O'Brien's pub in California.

According to the site, who spoke to staff and customers, Lamar ordered three Remy Martin drinks (the same drink he had when he nearly overdosed) and then left at around 1am.

He was spotted wearing the same outfit the next morning when he went to church with the Kardashians, yet we doubt Khloe knew he was out drinking then.

When the reality star spotted the photos on TMZ, she tweeted something very cryptic:

She then proceeded to retweet these tweets from a preacher:

We just hope Lamar is OK, and they can finally work things out.

There are going to be some very disappointed tourists hanging around Temple Bar this Friday, longing for a pint of Guinness only to be told they've come to the wrong place.

As us Irish folks know all too well at this stage, Good Friday is the only day aside from Christmas Day when pubs must close and alcohol is unavailable to buy.

Of course, as with any rule, there are a few ways to bend it – but only a few, mind you. If you don't fancy panic-buying at your local off-licence this Thursday and can't bear to finish out the week without so much as a (responsible) sip of wine, try one of these options…

Have a flutter on the dogs

Harold's Cross Greyhound Stadium is once again offering full bar facilities for anyone booked in for a restaurant package. So head along for a night of betting and a few pints. Generally there's a minimum group size of four, and you'll need to get your reservation in fast by phone or online.

**IT'S A GREAT FRIDAY EVERY FRIDAY**If your looking for something fun and Irish to do on a Friday Night in Dublin,…

Hop on the boat… kinda
If you've spotted the La Peniche restaurant-boat docked on the Grand Canal, this Friday would be a good time to check it out. La Peniche offer a three-course dinner cruise for €42pp at 6pm or 9pm including a glass of Prosecco, with a bar serving wine, beer, Guinness and more once the boat is moving. A three-course lunch option is also available for €35 if you want to catch some springtime rays as you eat (and drink).

Catch the train
It's legal to purchase alcohol on a train or in any train station bar, provided you can show a valid Intercity ticket. So take a road trip somewhere while enjoying a drink… or stay in Dublin and head to Madigans in Connolly Station.

If you're celebrating St Patrick's Day in the West today you might notice things are a little more subdued than usual.

At least that's the aim of the plan laid down by several supermarkets and off-licences across Galway, preventing revellers from purchasing alcohol until 3pm today, March 17.

It's hoped the initiative will help to cut down on anti-social behaviour in the area, on a day which is notorious for on-street trouble.

According the Gardaí, the initiative is totally voluntary and businesses are under no legal obligation to refrain from selling alcohol.

Speaking to Newstalk today, Galway's Lord Mayor Frank Fahy said that the issue of anti-social behaviour on March 17 was not just isolated to one part of Ireland.

"We need to encourage people that there are other ways to celebrate St Patrick's Day other than going over the top as regards alcohol.

"It's not just Galway, every city has the same problem, right across the country."

So are you the person that never remembers the office Christmas party?

Did you accidently tell Brigid in Accounting that everyone thinks shes a bit dry or perhaps you flirted shamelessly with your married boss?

Maybe those scratches on your leg are from when you crawled up on the table to do a terrible karaoke version of Total Eclipse of the Heart?

Well listen up! New research says your drunken antics might not just be the result of just having one too many G&Ts.

A new study conducted by scientists in the University of Helsinki has identified a genetic mutation that results in some drinkers acting overly impulsive and reckless when drinking.

Defects in our 'serotonin 2B receptor' can kick in after only a small amount of alcohol, causing unruliness in some drinkers.

According to Dr Roope Tukkanen, those with the mutation are more likely to "get into verbal arguments and fights, have unplanned sex" and "are arrested more often."

Those with the genetic mutation are generally quite impulsive even when not drinking and probably suffer from mood disorders.

Though the study has located the mutation in the Finnish population, people with Finnish ancestry could also be susceptible.

"Nowadays people move more, which may result in the mutation being passed on," said Dr Roope.

Even if you can't find any semblance of Finnish ancestry in your family tree, this is still a good excuse for a particularly embarrassing office Christmas party – but if we're honest, it was probably all those shots of tequila that were the problem.

We certainly know how to make the most of a beer garden 'round these parts.

Indeed, if there's a hint of sunshine – even in the depths of winter – hoards of Irish folk are more than happy to transfer outdoors to finish their pints and chats.

Gas heater switched on; an extra geansaí applied; a sturdy disposition: with the right, can-do attitude even freezing temperatures and the occasional sprinkling of rain can be cheerfully endured.

However, we could only shake our heads in wonder when we spotted two particularly hardy chaps finish their beer garden pints… while waist-deep in flood water.

With the nearby river bursting its banks amid heavy rainfall over the weekend, a pair of patrons at the Kirkstall Bridge Inn in Leeds very much took matters into their own hands.

John Kelly and Steve Holt, the plucky individuals in question, run the Kirkstall Brewery that owns the pub. They told BuzzFeed they were "irked by the river’s inconsiderate nature" and decided to reclaim it by taking their beers outside.

And while the water was initially only knee-deep, the flooding continued until it soon reached their waists.

The pair reported afterwards that "the beer was spot on… but we only had a couple". They eventually departed when they "got told off by Steve’s missus and had to get out".

Reckless; dangerous; just a bit of good fun? Well, they're all over social media anyway. And one thing's for sure too – a bit of November beer garden chill doesn't seem so bad now after all.

Whether it's a Saturday night blow-out or a few cheeky cocktails, a night of drinking can rack up far more calories than you might think.

Carb-heavy drinks, sugary mixers, post-pub chips… it all adds up.

If you're planning a night out this weekend but don't want to throw your clean-eating plans out the window, then it's important to plan ahead.

Being mindful of what you consume can go a huge way towards keeping you on track when it comes to dropping the pounds.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind…

1. Eat BEFORE you drink
Drinking on an empty stomach is NOT the way to lose weight, despite what you might think. Not only will it result in huge blood sugar spikes, but you'll get tipsier faster, meaning you're more likely to choose drinks and food that will send your diet flying out the window. Eat at least a light meal or a filling snack before you head out on the town.

2. Know your drinks
The cocktail menu can be a bit of a diet disaster – it's generally full of syrupy mixers and high calorie alcohol options. If you want a mixed drink, choose soda water or slimline tonic as your base. When it comes to beer, choose a low-carb or light version, or keep things simple with a glass of white wine or prosecco.

3. Water, water, water
Space out your drinking by ordering a glass of still or sparking water (whatever you prefer) with each drink, and not ordering your next round until the water is finished. Not only will you be inclined to drink far less, but by keeping hydrated you're already helping ease tomorrow's hangover.

4. Avoid mindless nibbing
Peanuts, finger food and bags of crisps are all readily available on a night out, but if they do show up on your table, it's time to get focused. Either say 'no' or sit somewhere where the food is out of arm's reach. If you have to lean over three people to get to those cocktail sausages, you'll find you'll eat far fewer of them.

5. Plan what you'll eat afterwards
If you're inclined to get the munchies after a night out, be one step ahead of your tipsy self. Either scope out late-night food joints nearby that have healthy options, or pre-prepare some guilt free snacks for when you arrive home, like carrot sticks and hummus or a bag of light popcorn. Convenience is key.
