Friday is FINALLY here and for many that means it’s also finally time to wind down and kick the weekend off with friends and an after-work drink.

But, even if you are trying to keep your alcohol content to a minimum with just a few drinks, the amount of sugar you may be consuming will SERIOUSLY shock you.

What is not so surprising is that it is our choice of mixers that are the biggest offenders.

It’s safe to say after reading this you won’t be ordering a G&T tonight – but instead may be opting for a glass of red wine or even a beer (surprised us too).

Here is the breakdown on seven of the most popular drinks, and their sugar content:

Gin and tonic

The bitter taste of our favourite refreshing drink may fool you into thinking that there isn’t too much sugar in a standard G&T. But the sugar content in tonic water is way higher than we thought. On average, a 250ml glass of gin and tonic contains approximately 18g of sugar – this is 36 percent of our daily intake*. Simply order a slimline tonic instead, and you will avoid having four tsps. of sugar in your drink.

*Daily sugar intake should be 50g for females and 70g for males

Rum and cola

Similarly to gin, rum has next to no sugar in it. But, when you add in a coke, this is a totally different story. An average mixing size measure of coke (250ml) contains 27g of sugar. This is an astounding 55 percent on your recommended daily sugar intake. Ehhh… diet please!

Vodka and cranberry

No, no, no! Cranberry juice is absolutely LOADED with sugar. While vodka is virtually sugar free, cranberry juice is a killer for your waistline. On average, 250ml of cranberry juice contains roughly 30g of sugar. This is a staggering 60 percent of your RDA (recommended daily allowance).

Thankfully, it’s time for the good news.

Prosecco

Thank God! According to FatSecret.com, an average sized glass of prosecco (121ml) has only about a gram of sugar in it. This is a happy 2 percent of our RDA.

Beer

While some beers are totally sugar free, the rest contain approximately 1 percent of your daily sugar allowance in each pint.

White wine

On average, a small glass of wine (125ml) contains 1.25g of sugar. However, the sugar content in white wines varies depending on each individual wine, and how sweet it is. But overall, white wine is a relatively safe option if you are trying to watch your sugar intake. Each glass is approximately 2.5 percent of your allowance.

Red wine

Woohoo! Taking up only 2 perfect of our daily intake, on average a 125ml glass of red wine has less than a gram of sugar in it, according to the US Department of Agriculture. We know what we’ll be drinking tonight!

Many of us are looking for that perfect white smile, and while giving them an extra good scrub is sure to help, the foods you are eating could also be responsible for staining your teeth.

Here are five foods and drinks you should try to cut down on if you want to achieve that Hollywood smile.

1. Tea and coffee
The tannins in tea can cause staining and the outer layer of your tooth easily absorbs food and drink which causes further staining. Try to reduce your tea and coffee intake.

2. Sauces
Similarly to tea and coffee, coloured sauces can cause staining by entering your tooth enamel.  However, some vegetables can protect your teeth from this so eat these before over indulging on rich coloured sauces.

3. Red wine
Despite the fact that it can help to prevent gum disease, red wine is terrible for staining your teeth. Opt for white wine when possible.

4. Some fruits and vegetables
As tempting and healthy as they are, the bright colours in fruits and vegetables can be causing your teeth to discolour so wash water around your mouth afterwards or brush your teeth straight away.

5. Sweets
Sweets are full of vibrant dyes and juices to give them their irresistible colour, so if it stains your tongue it will probably stain your teeth.

Owner of V+ Modelling agency Vicki Mooney has opened up about a terrifying incident in which she stopped breathing after her drink was spiked.

Vicki appeared on TV3’s Midday earlier today and spoke of the ordeal which saw her collapse after leaving a nightclub, not long after refusing a man’s advances to leave with him.

Her friend performed CPR on her and she was rushed to St Luke’s Hospital in Kilkenny: “I was fine. I had my normal few drinks that I normally had, and had a great night’s dance. There was a guy that evening that had kind of pressured me into leaving with him. I said, ‘no, no, no’, and he was ushered out. Fifteen minutes later we left, and we were 20ft away from the B&B across the road. I remember my arms and legs began to feel weak. It was a strange feeling. I started to fee nauseous and dizzy. Apparently I just hit the floor and I was gone. And Anna [her friend] who was a trained first responder… performed CPR as I had stopped breathing.”

Vicki said that as the weeks started to go by following the terrifying incident, she began to realise what had actually happened to her: “So I was perfectly fine leaving the club ten minutes after everyone was ushered out, but I hit the floor and I don’t remember anything else. I presumed I was [spiked] because it wasn’t one of those crazy nights where there was dancing on tables.”

The actress is involved in Sodastream’s new campaign and this new ad was due to be released during the Superbowl on the Fox network in the US.

However, due to the reference at the end of the advert when Johansson says, “Sorry, Coke and Pepsi,” the ad has been banned and must be redone to remove competitors names.

Pepsi and Coke are big sponsors of Fox so this shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to Sodastream.

The ad centres around proving that Sodasteam is not only healthier but is less wasteful than other soda brands.
