According to emerging reports this morning, a garda and another individual have sustained injuries following a shooting in Ballymun earlier today.

The incident occurred during a drugs raid which saw armed officers from the Emergency Response Unit support unarmed colleagues.

It is believed the shooting began from within the house on Barnwell Drive as officers attempted to gain entry.

A garda spokesman has elaborated on the incident, saying: "Two people have been injured, a Garda and male civilian, both were treated at the scene by trained Gardaí and DFB."

"They have taken to hospital for treatment. Their injuries are not believed to be life threatening."

It has been established that the Garda Ombudsman has been notified of this morning's incident due to the fact a gun was discharged by a garda member during a planned operation.

The area around the home has been sealed off and Gardaí remain at the scene.

A man, who was found unresponsive on the streets of the nation's capital on Monday evening, has died in hospital.

The individual, who is known to the city's homeless services, was discovered in the vicinity of the Four Courts at 8pm, and subsequently rushed to hospital.

The deceased, who is understood to have been a Lithuanian national, did not recover, and passed away in the Mater hospital.

Commenting on his death and the death of another rough sleeper in Ranelagh this week, Homelessness charity the Peter McVerry Trust expressed remorse over the city's homelessness crisis.

"The latest two deaths in Dublin bring to seven the number of people sleeping rough that have died in the past 12 weeks."

The Lord Mayor of Dublin has taken to Twitter to tell the people of Dublin that they have a special place in the heart of a man who recently visited the Irish capital.

Mark from Lancashire composed a letter which paid tribute to the people he encountered during a recent trip to Dublin – a message which was swiftly shared by Mícheál MacDonncha.

Recalling the events of September 9, 10 and 11 this year, Mark explained that he collapsed on Leeson Street after suffering a brain injury, and was treated with the utmost care, respect and understanding by everyone from the emergency services to the hotel management.

Posting an image of the letter he received, the Lord Mayor wrote: "I received a lovely letter from Mark in Lancashire who asked me to thank people of Dublin, esp the Emergency Services, who helped him after he suffered a brain injury on 11th September."

"He is very grateful all in Dublin who were so friendly and thoughtful to him and his partner."

Mark writes: "I would like to thank everyone in Dublin who attended to me and helped my partner in the awful days after the accident, the Ambulance Service, St. James Hospital and Beaumont Hospital where I had an operation for a bleed on my brain, the Central Hotel on Talbot St, who free of charge let my partner stay for a night."

"I cannot explain how grateful I am to the people of Dublin who have been the most friendly and thoughtful people I have ever met and you must be so proud to be the mayor of such a wonderful city."

"I would be grateful if you could pass on my appreciation to the people of Dublin in any way you can."

For months now, Irish shoppers have patiently waited as Victorias' Secret sets up its first fully-stocked Dublin store.

The shop front on Grafton street has been hidden from public view for the best part of a year, and it's safe to say we're all dying to get inside the doors.

While an official date is yet to be confirmed, one blogger has claimed the lingerie store will open for business on December 5 or 6 – just in time for the Christmas rush.

Louise Cooney took to Snapchat to reveal the news after she reportedly received an invite to the big launch.

However, as Victoria's Secret have yet to comment on the launch, we won't be planning any shopping trips just yet.

But hey, this definitely looks promising.

Putting a personalised touch on any gift makes it extra special.

Selection boxes are a staple Christmas gift, but we have often wondered if there was a way that the classic confectionery present could be made that little bit more exceptional.

Luckily, Maltesers seems to have been reading our minds, and had teamed up with Arnotts to bring Christmas shoppers that extra special accentuation to add to their boxes of chocolate.

A post shared by James Patrice (@james_patrice) on

Personalised selection boxes will be available in Arnotts from now until Christmas Eve (so it's perfect for a last minute gift).

Confectionery connoisseurs can visit the Maltesers Pop Up in store  and nab Maltesers, Galaxy or Snickers selection boxes.

The boxes can then be personalised with a Happy Christmas message and the name of your gift recipient.

The personalisation is printed on a silky ribbon which is wrapped around the box by the staff at Arnotts (great news for us lazy gals who hate wrapping).

The boxes cost €8.00 each, including your personal message.

Fancy treating your entire family to a ribbon-wrapped selection box? There are deals on the chocolate where you can nab four boxes for just €28.00

The pop-up can be found in Arnotts on Henry Street until December 24.

Dubliners, you're in luck.

Research by the latest Pobal Deprivation Index has shown that Dublin is the wealthiest area in Ireland (no surprise there.)

The research shows that income levels are growing strongly in the nation's capital.

Pobal says towns with between 1,000 and 5,000 people were worst hit by the recession and didn't do the best during the recovery.

Communities located in the most rural areas are also the worst impacted.

'The areas of highest affluence and highest disadvantage are largely those areas that were of highest disadvantage and affluence in previous census waves,' spokesperson Martin Quigley told Breaking News.

'While there has been some movement, in general, what we have found is social disadvantage is a long-term and geographically entrenched phenomenon.'

The Irish Government has announced plans to propose a levy on disposable coffee cups.

For the privilege of tossing your paper cup in the trash, you can expect to pay up to 15cent more per cup than before under the potential measures.

The cafe sector creates a huge amount of waste through coffee cups, lids, stirrers and sachets, and up to 2 million coffee cups end up in Irish landfills every single day.

A post shared by Coffeeangel (@coffeeangel) on

One cafe with big plans to combat the massive waste is Dublin coffee connoisseur Coffeeangel.

Coffeeangel believes the most effective way to tackle the cafe industry’s waste issue is by raising awareness and encouraging the use of reusable cups.

The coffee concept has teamed up with Friends of the Earth to create the KeepCup – a reusable coffee mug with a difference.

The Keepcup comes in at €18.00, a little pricey for a mug, but it's the gift that keeps on giving – literally.

Every time a Coffeeangel customer uses their Keepcup, the cafe will donate 20 cent of the order to Friends of the Earth.

The money will go towards helping to support local environmental initiatives.

'It is impossible to ignore the impact the human race is having on our environment, and whilst the challenges and changes required are immense, we wholeheartedly believe that through the power of small, personal initiatives we can help make a difference,' said Caroline Sleiman, Director at Coffeeangel.

'That is why we have decided to donate 20¢ to Friends of the Earth Ireland, on behalf of our customers, from every Coffeeangel coffee served in a reusable KeepCup as part of our new ‘Your Cup Our Future’ initiative.'

'We explored more conventional incentives for reuse, such as giving 20¢ off a purchase, but we believe our customers are as concerned about environmental issues as we are and want to create bigger impact with their purchasing decisions.'

Sounds pretty environmentally savvy to us.

If you've been out for a few late ones in Dublin city over the past few months, you'll notice that it's becoming increasingly difficult to hail a taxi home.

And it looks like the problem is only going to get worse with one Dublin City Councillor warning that the capital could face a taxi shortage due to the rising costs of insurance premiums.

According to The Irish Examiner, Fianna Fáil's Pal McAuliffe said taxi drivers are being forced to leave the industry because they simply can not afford to keep their cabs on the road, or in some cases, because insurance companies won't even quote them.

He went on to say how he has already received a huge amount of complaints from Dublin residents who had been inconvenience by the lack of available taxis.

"Well we've seen increasingly over the past three years the cost of car insurance increase, but those in the taxi industry have been particularly impacted," he said.

"The real issue now is that we're being increasingly getting taxi drivers who are coming to us saying that they can't enter the market because insurance companies will not insure them.

"This week alone, I've had two people contacting me saying that they just cannot get a quote."
