Dublin

The weekend is nearly here, but just to make your day that little bit better (thank us later), we have some exciting PUPPY-RELATED news.

If you’re a fan of all things cuddly, cute and generally squeal-inducing, you better make a big space in your diary for March 11, 12 and 13.

Dublin is set to become a cat and dog playground for that weekend only, as Whiskas and Pedigree team up for Pawsitivity In The City, a three-day event promoting #PawsitiveLiving for pets and their owners.

Whether you’re a pet owner, looking to give a pet in need a new home, or simply just want to give and receive some oh-so fluffy puppy love, then head along to Merrion Square to check out the action.

Activities lined up so far include a doggy disco, professional pet grooming and dog training services, plus advice from expert vets including Ireland AM star Pete Wedderburn.

The ISPCA will also be there to help some dogs in need to find their new forever home through their Rehoming Programme.

Now, to tide you over until March 11, here’s the most adorable puppy/kitten GIF we’ve ever seen:

Time was that a red carpet event was an everyday occurrence on the busy Irish social scene.

After all, who can forget the likes of the VIP Style and the TV Now awards being the hottest tickets in town?

Charlize Theron would pop along to the Meteors, while the Iftas also boasted oodles of Hollywood attendees.

Duchess Kate and her Mammy Middleton would swing by for a weekend break in our capital (circa spring 2007), making sure to stop by a fancy-pants, red-carpeted gallery launch while they were in town.

Then there was the Eurovision, an iron-clad stable of the mid-Nineties. Even the MTV Europe Music Awards came to Dublin back in 1999 (where Christina, Mariah, Britney and Whitney – *swoon* – ALL made an appearance).

Of course, red carpet events still take place: but we dare say that there’s not quite as much glitz nor as much glam these days. Yes, the dresses are more muted; the hair decidedly less full.

Thankfully, however, you may yet have reason to dust off your Gina sandals.

Yes, the inaugural black-tie Gossies are taking place this Sunday in Dublin and suffice to say that the guestlist (Vogue Williams, Rosanna Davison, Nicola Hughes and Roz Purcell) is as impressive as anything 2006 could have offered us. Hurrah!

Here, in honour of the glamorous Gossies (where a total of 18 awards will be up for grabs), we examine the five key red carpet styles we can expect to see on the night…

1) Dressed to the nines

A big night out means only one thing: a really big dress. Take inspiration from Lisa Cannon in Vera Wang:

2) Keeping it casual

The ‘oh this old thing’ vibe. Look to Mariah Carey – dressed down in a black vest and ripped denim jeans – for ideas:

3) Look at me

The UTV Ireland cameras will be there at the Gossies, so expect a few head-turners, just like Michelle Keegan:

4) Dividing opinion

They’ll love it or they’ll hate it. Check out Lorraine Keane in a Deborah Veale gown to perfect your look:

5) Classic is best

Why try and reinvent the wheel – keep it simple like Kathryn Thomas:

With reports of daylight muggings and on-street attacks increasing in Dublin, we can't stress how important it is to look after your personal safety when walking alone.

Of course, in some cases, adrenaline tends to kick in whether you mean it to or not, as happened with stylist Courtney Smith earlier this week.

The Dublin fashionista was walking along Ormond Quay in the city centre on Tuesday when she was the victim of an attempted mugging – but she says she managed to fight the thief off.

"It probably wasn't the wisest thing in the world to do as I saw afterwards there was another guy with him," Courtney recalled to the Irish Independent.

"But I was just acting on pure adrenaline."

The scariest part of Courtney's experience is that it happened in the middle of the afternoon, long before dark.

"It happened in broad daylight as I was walking down the quays," she said.

"I felt a little tug on my bag and then it felt as if someone was rummaging in my handbag and I saw this guy out of the corner of my eye trying to take something out of my bag.

"Then he went to take the bag off me and I basically boxed him in the shoulder and shouted something like, 'what are you doing?'

"He just sauntered off with the other guy without saying a word."

Courtney tweeted shortly after the incident, saying she hoped her "right hook left a mark" on the anonymous attacker.

We hope so too.

If you're a fashion gal or a style stealer, then get ready for your wallet to be emptied because & Other Stories is coming to Dublin.

The mega-fashion brand is opening up its first ever Irish store, and they're certainly going all out with it.

The new shop will have THREE floors full of fashion and accessories which will give us shoppers the ultimate shopping experience.

The brand is known for its minimal style, sharp cuts and being bang on trend, so the purse-friendly store will be welcomed to Grafton Street.

Samuel Fernstrom, the managing director of & Other Stories said he's looking forward for the brand to "come alive" in Dublin.

“We’re very happy to have found a great location right in the heart of Dublin. We look forward to seeing our first-ever Irish store come alive,” he said.

The store already has 22 shops all around the world, so we can't wait until the launch this Autumn.

Shoppers and Tesco staff had quite the ordeal over the weekend as a man entered the local supermarket in Rush, Co Dublin and threatened to light himself on fire.

Fire crews, paramedics and the Garda rushed to the scene to try and help the man away from harm.

It was a busy Saturday afternoon when then drama unfolded. One witness told the Irish Independent that the man in his 40s walked up to the deli counter and then poured fuel over his body and on the floor.

"The man was fumbling with the lighter. I think the only reason he couldn't light the fire is because his hands were wet," the witness said.

One of the deli workers then ran to find security, who attempted to reason with the man.

Since the man wouldn't back down, the security guard tackled him and pushed him along to the fire exit.

"We could hear a staff member calling all managers to the deli – then staff were running for fire extinguishers," she said. "Then she was asking customers to evacuate the shop."

"If he had lit himself on fire, the two women working behind the deli would have been trapped in there," the witness added.

The man in question was later taken to Beaumont Hospital where he was examined by a mental health specialist.

The Humans of Dublin Facebook page, our capital's answer to Humans Of New York, has featured some truly touching posts over the last couple of years.

We've had family stories, mental health stories and a few love stories too  – like this beautiful post last night from a familiar Irish face.

Mattress Mick is known to many as Dublin's zaniest mattress salesman, but last night he shared a very different side of himself.

"When I was in my late teens I met a girl, and she became very, very special to me," Mick explains.

"She was my first love. We were together for quite a while, but I guess we were just too young. We met too early. She wanted to do other things, so she decided to go different ways.

Mick then goes on to explain how the two grew apart, even though the woman in question "never really left" his thoughts.

"A few years later somebody told me she developed cancer. I actually met her about two years before she died. Her friends organised a reunion but I didn't think it'd be the last time I saw her.

"One Sunday afternoon, out of the blue, a friend of hers called me and said, 'Hi Michael, I have someone here that wants to talk to you.’ She said, 'Hi, it’s me, Kathy. I just would like to say goodbye. I know I'm going to die soon, and I wanted to let you know you were very special in my life too.'

"Every time I think about that phone call I get very sad. It was the nicest phone call I have ever received in my whole life. It meant so much to me. That someone who knew they were terminally ill and hadn't a lot of time could actually think about me, and tell me that…

"I guess it is true, it's never too late to tell somebody how you feel. She died that week, but she'll always be in that very special place in my heart."

So beautiful. After less than a day, the post has over 7,000 likes on the Humans of Dublin page, and we can see why.

Banksy's style of artwork is well-known and often-copied at this stage, but a new piece on Dublin's Moore St has gotten people very excited indeed today.

The artwork, which appeared on wooden hoarding overnight, is a nod to the 1916 Rising and the current dispute over the redevelopment of the Moore St area.

It shows Padraig Pearse "surrendering" two to developers dressed in high-vis jackets, and is signed with a distinctive Banksy signature.

Needless to say, people have been getting very excited over on Twitter:

However, according to Dublin street art king Will St Leger, the new piece is "99.9% likely" to be a fake.

Speaking to RTÉ, Will cited the piece's "amateur style and theme" along with the fact that Banksy no longer signs his work in that way, as two signs it's almost certainly a dupe.

Oh well. Maybe one day…

To be honest, we all go on about how great the 90s were. And rightly so, it was the best decade of all time, obvz.

Well, now any 90s kids out there get ready to be VERY excited because a brand new radio station has just launched that is dedicated to the ninties. *Screams*.

It's called Non Stop 90s Radio and you can hear it on 107.1FM.

The description on its website goes: "If you were born in the 90s or you lived through the decade, then this is the station for you. Browse through our website and remember the fashion, the movies, the news and lots more."

There's also some "exciting news" being released on February 11 – which we're hoping is in relation to the 30-day licence being extended, much like Christmas FM.

At the moment the station is only available in Dublin, but we're trusting it will spread around the whole country soon.

Like many crazy trends, the cat café started in Japan, and again, like many crazy trends, we are totally digging it.

Who doesn't want to sit down with a cuppa tea and stroke cute, furry felines all day, huh?

Well, we all might be able to soon as a Kickstarter campaign has landed in Ireland, and if successful, it will see the first cat café opening in Dublin.

Georgia O Neill has a full plan for her business, but just needs a little money to get started.

Her goal is €35,000 which will be enough to get the business completely set up and people in the door.

She also is offering a range of awards, from discounted visits to personalised t-shirts.

If you want to learn more about Crazy Cat Café, here's the link to her campaign.

Last week it was the LadyBall, and now another marketing ploy has the people of Ireland scratching their heads.

A new ad for an ironing service in Dublin called Iron Mike's is definitely the most enthusiastic – and bizarre – piece of promotion we've seen in a LONG time.

Iron Mike's reportedly opened on Camden St today, and the first ad features a very shouty and muscular man who is apparently a "world class ironer."

Just look at him there, getting all excited about shirts and trousers:

The website is also very flashy indeed (and we mean that literally), making us wonder if it's all a smart marketing promotion for another company.

A few calls by us to the number listed have been unanswered – though we do recommend calling it just to hear the hilarious voicemail featuring 'Mike' singing Joe Esposito's You're The Best Around…

We do love our pub crawls in Ireland, and Christmas time isn't the only time of the year you can do one, you know.

So, one Reddit user decided to put together the ultimate pub crawl in Dublin.

The user, tyr, came up with the handiest way to reach most bars, so, starting from J O'Connell's on Richmond Street, he made a straight line all the way down to the George on George's Street where you finish your night.

There's over 25 bars and pubs to get through though, so you'd either want to start very early, or skip a few.

Either way, it'll make for an interesting night out.

If you have a story, video or anything else you think we’d love, catch us on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or hello@shemazing.ie. The best submission EVERY month wins a €50 shopping voucher!

Honest To Goodness
Everything's good here – the juices, the sambos and the breakfast omelettes. But a personal favourite is the €8 Legend Salad, a delish mix of broccoli, feta, cherry tomatoes, roasted seeds, mixed leaves and your choice of roast chicken or tuna.
