In a moving essay for Elle Magazine, Kesha has spoken about her eating disorder as well as her time in rehab.

The Timber singer revealed in the weeks prior to her treatment, she said she felt that her whole body was “shutting down”, and knew it wasn’t because of her touring schedule. The singer admitted that she was worried about what people might think about her going to rehab.

"Sure, I've written songs about partying, but my dirty little secret is that I'm actually incredibly responsible. I take my music and career very seriously, and certainly didn't land in this situation from partying. But I was cut off from the outside world and I imagined people making up stories at a time when what I really needed was support."

The 27-year-old revealed that she felt pressurised by her job to be as skinny as possible.

"I've always tried to be a crusader for loving yourself, but I'd been finding it harder and harder to do personally. I felt like part of my job was to be as skinny as possible, and to make that happen, I had been abusing my body. I just wasn't giving it the energy it needed to keep me healthy and strong."

Kesha went on to criticise the music industry for the way it compares female artists to one another especially when it comes to their appearance. The singer said this only made things worse for her body insecurities.

"The music industry has set unrealistic expectations for what a body is supposed to look like, and I started becoming overly critical of my own body because of that. I felt like people were always lurking, trying to take pictures of me with the intention of putting them up online or printing them in magazines and making me look terrible. I became scared to go in public, or even use the internet. I may have been paranoid, but I also saw and heard enough hateful things to fuel that paranoia."

Kesha spent two months in rehab and felt she is able to focus more on her music because of it. The singer said sharing her story has been scary, but hopes that it will help other people facing similar issues.

"I'm not fully fixed—I am a person in progress—but I want to be part of the solution, not part of the problem. Even I need to be reminded that we are who we are," she said. "And when I say that, I f–king mean it, now more than ever."

Kesha has opened up for the first time about going to rehab and battling her eating disorder.

The 27-year-old singer revealed that the constant public scrutiny and media commentary played a big part in her breakdown.

“I’m in an industry where people photograph your body and zoom in and blow it up and put it on the cover of magazines, and other people make terrible comments. It really messed with my head, and I realized I couldn’t do it by myself.”

Kesha went on to deny rumours which claimed that she went to rehab for substance abuse, but insisted her attendance was to help her overcome her eating disorder.

“Let’s just get the elephant out of the room. My eating disorder is something I’ve been struggling with for a while. People will make up stories, but I went to rehab for an eating disorder — nothing more and nothing less.”

Kesha went on to say that attending rehab was the “scariest thing she’s ever done” but believes it saved her life.

“The decision to take control of it is the scariest thing I’ve ever done. And this is coming from someone who dives with sharks and jumps out of airplanes for fun. To have a breakthrough you have to have a breakdown, and I definitely went through both of those — in hindsight, it saved my life.”

The Timber singer feels stronger after attending rehab and is ready to make more music.

“The whole process has made me so much stronger and ready to take my life by the horns and make a record that I’m going to be proud of and not care what anybody else thinks!”

When you suspect someone you love has an eating disorder it can be difficult knowing how to face them. The matter can be particularly delicate and people often worry about saying the wrong thing or being pushed away, so they can leave things to fester.

However, by following our advice, you will be able to broach the topic with confidence:

  • Prepare what you want to say and how you say it before approaching your friend.
  • Timing is critical. Try to pick a time when you won’t be interrupted and when both you and your friend are relaxed and happy.
  • Avoid talking to them before or after a meal.
  • Tell them your concerns and give them a chance to answer.
  • Avoid mentioning diets and weight loss but be honest about your feelings.
  • Prepare for the backlash but don’t take it to heart.
  • If they don’t want to talk, tell them you are there for them and encourage them to visit their GP.

It is important that you don’t keep your concerns to yourself because the sooner a disorder is dealt with, the sooner your loved one can get better.
