While it might be remembered as the series that launched global sensation, One Direction, series seven of the X Factor actually had quite a number of stand-out contestants.

While Matt Cardle and Rebecca Ferguson were pegged for stardom from the get-go, X Factor hopeful Mary Byrne also had the UK and Irish public eating out of the palm of her hand back in 2010.

An incredible singing voice coupled with a warm, down-to-earth personality made the Dubliner one of the most popular contestants in the long-running ITV show.

But after losing out to Matt Cardle six years ago, Mary’s star didn’t ascend quite as high as viewers and fans hoped, but that hasn’t stopped the former Tesco worker pursuing her dream.

Having released an album entitled Mine & Yours in 2011 followed by an autobiography called This Is My Life, Mary will now be performing alongside Cliff Richard on her upcoming Mediterranean Cruise ship performances.

And while Mary was known for her incredible on-stage persona – bejewelled gowns, ebony hair and show-stopping make-up – viewers were also given a sneak peek into the singer’s down-time get-up, and it endeared us to her even more.

Recently rocking flip-flops, cut-offs and a blonde bob, Mary smiled warmly for photographers outside Today FM studios after promoting her concerts with the one and only Sir Cliff.

And if the rumours are to be believed, Mary won’t be stopping there – Tesco’s most famous export is reportedly set to release a 60s-themed album in the not-too-distant future.

Yaaas Queen, yaaas.

It looks like Scarlett Moffatt can do absolutely no wrong as long as she's just getting her chill on at home and making us weep tears of laughter in the process.

But if she dares glam up for a night out or even drop a few lbs, a worrying number of her Instagram followers waste no time telling her to get back in her box. Really sound, right?

After uploading a shot of herself to Instagram yesterday, the Geordie lass was forced to read disparaging comments about her appearance.

Sharing a snap of herself rocking a powder blue coat dress, the TV sensation jokingly captioned it: "Being vain with my alien head #pose #selfie #celfie" but it looks like social media users weren't happy to leave it at that.

Taking aim at Scarlett's cleavage, one Instagram user wrote: "The look is nice but saggy boobs are a no!" while another remarked: "Oh dear someone needs a bra. #sorry."

The Gogglebox star wasted no time responding to these remarks, writing: "When you have size G cup boobs and everyone’s slagging your boobs off!!"

"I have a bra on here and sorry that I haven’t had f*kin surgery, I try and be a good influence to others to be comfortable in your own skin," she continued.

"There’s enough sh*t going on in the world, let’s build each other up instead of being negative!" she requested.

Thankfully, many of Scarlett's fans had her back on this issue, with one writing: "Omg the comments! You should be ashamed."

"Would you actually say that to her face?? I bet not, cowards. Beautiful Scarlett! Keep doing what you're doing!" she added.

We're with her on that one.

Unless you've been living under a rock for the past week, you'll know that a staggering number of people around the world have devoted a serious amount of time to catching a bunch of imaginary creatures with the help of their phones.

And, like everything else that takes the world by storm, it wasn't long before our social media feeds were awash with memes dedicated to the new game and posts detailing the impact it has had on society as we know it.

But if you –  like countless others – have had your fill of info on the trend, you'll be happy to know that there's a Chrome plugin which allows you to rid your feeds of all Pokémon Go references.

PokeGone (Props to whoever came up with that one) is a free extension which means you can log on without having to see anything about the game which is currently taking the world by storm.

Excuse us while we go do a little downloading…

In addition to being one of the first shows to give an accurate portrayal of female sexuality, noughties television sensation, Sex and the City, was known for its fashion-forward characters.

And its shoes – its hundreds and hundreds of shoes.

But while most of us are happy to allow the show its place in style history, there are others among us who are on a mission to remind us that the four New Yorkers – and their string of suitors – often fell short of the mark when it came to their wardrobe choices.

In an Instagram account called everyoutfitonsatc, die-hard Sex and the City fans can trawl through the casts' numerous ensembles and pour scorn on the somewhat questionable accessorising that went on back in the early noughties.

From Carrie's knee-high socks paired with open-toes shoes to Miranda's jaunty necktie teamed with a strapless dress, this account reminds us that when it comes to our favourite show of all time,it may be time to remove the rose-tinted glasses.

If you sense you might suffer some serious Love Island withdrawals after Cara and Nathan were crowned official winners last night, then it's time to pull up a pew to the programme's spin-off show.

That's right, the lads and ladies from one of TV's most controversial shows are more than happy to give viewers a peek into their lives as those last bikinis are packed away and the sand is blown off those passports.

According to Cosmo, ITV have announced that die-hard fans will be given a chance to follow the islanders as they head back to the UK and get a front-row seat for the fireworks which are bound to go off as they face each other at the wrap party.

"Dishing all the dirt on what happened when our Islanders got dumped from paradise, Love Island: Heading Home follows the contestants as they return to the UK," ITV said in light of the big announcement.

"Coming face to face for the first time since leaving the villa, what will happen when the Islanders are reunited at the series wrap party?" they asked. "Will it be round two for Terry and Malin? Will Tom forgive Sophie's dalliance with Katie?"

Finish off 'a summer of fun, frolics and feverish flirting' by watching those lovestruck lads and ladies adjust to life back in Britain.

Excuse us while we shriek all over ourselves.

We're going to come right out and say it – we adore the Obama family.

From the President's drop the mic public addresses to the First Lady's decision to ride shotgun with James Corden, the Obama family are the family you WISH you had if only everyone could just play it cool for five damn seconds.

And yet while President Obama broke the mould in so many, many ways, he remains steadfast in his traditional approach to one particular job – fatherhood.

Reminding the public that you can be schlick as a world leader but a total goon when it comes to your children, good ol' Barack decided to serenade his oldest daughter during yesterday's 4th of July celebrations in the White House, and we cannot get enough.

From his God-awful singing voice to the appreciative-but-please-stop side hug Malia goes for, this is just too adorable.

Ladies, fast forward to 4.00 for that oh-so-golden moment…

With debate surrounding the result of the Brexit referendum continuing to rage, more than a few of us are starting to pull at our collars as we're forced to admit that we haven't quite gotten our heads around the implications of the whole thing.

And while recent reports have bombarded us with endless information pertaining to the UK and the EU's relationship not to mention Ireland's role in the whole thing, some of us still need a little help understanding what the future holds.

Oh, and just when you thought you had it nailed, Boris Johnson had to go and throw another spanner in the works by pulling out of the race for Prime Minister leaving many of us totally flummoxed by political events over the last seven days.

If you have to remind yourself who's who and what's what when it come to European politics, you're not alone and the good folk behind comedy act, Foil Arms and Hog, NEED you to know this.

Take it away, lads.

You know you've got something seriously special when Simon Cowell not only tells you he's got an 'incredible feeling' about you, but also hits that Golden Buzzer and even takes to the stage to hug you, right?

One young woman, who is in no doubt she's going places after her first audition, is 16-year-old Calysta Bevier who brought the house down during a recent taping of America's Got Talent.

Taking to the stage in front of the all-star panel of judges, Calysta revealed she had survived stage three ovarian cancer before blowing the audience away with a spine-tingling rendition of Rachel Platten's Fight Song.

Clearly moved by the teenager's talent and determination, Simon said: "I love everything about you. I just had thing feeling when you walked out, I just can't explain it."

"I think you're really special. I've just got this really incredible feeling about you," he added.

Aw, prepare for some MAJOR feels with this one, ladies.

Let's face it, we all did stupid things at sleepovers back in the day.

From mooning out our BFF's front door to knick-knocking on neighbour's houses, our common sense went straight out the window the minute we saw each other in jammies.

So, we can totally relate to one 15-year-old girl from the States who actually managed to get her head stuck in a giant Barney the Dinosaur costume during a recent slumber party.

Proving that the excitement had clearly gotten too much for her, Darby Risner stuck her noggin inside a discarded Barney head and promptly got stuck.

After enlisting the help of emergency services who got to work with a lot of Vaseline and some intricate scissor work, the Alabama teen was finally freed, but not before her predicament hit social media sites. (Obvs.)

And unlike our Irish mammies who would have scared the bejaysus out of us with threats warning us not to be so stupid again, Darby's mam lolled as much as the teen's mates, laughing: "It gave her short little Barney arms since it was nearly at her elbows. It was hilarious."

Darby, you're a hero.

If you grew up in a sports-mad house, you'll be all too familiar with the roars of excitement and shrieks of delight that accompany any big match.

Learning to tune them out was part and parcel of family life, but sometimes – on very important occasions – the celebration was bigger than you.

Girls, sometimes the celebration was bigger than all of us.

Discovering that at an early age is the only way to navigate life in a football-obsessed house, and it looks like one little lad in Nottingham has just been officially schooled.

While watching Ireland play against Sweden with his Dubliner dad this week, Gavin Hughes became a prop in his father's display of celebration.

And, as is only right, the moment soon made its way onto Facebook and right into our hearts…

By this stage, we've all heard of the adorable gran who totally charmed the internet this week.

Proving good manners never costs anything, one young man's Nan made sure to say please and thank you to Mr. Google when doing a little research online.

And when Twitter user, Ben John, happened upon his 85-year-old grandmother's adorable internet search, he did what any upstanding millennial would do – he shared it online.

"Omg opened my Nan's laptop and when she's googled something she's put 'please' and 'thank you'. I can't" he tweeted alongside a photo of his Nan's attempt to chat with the search engine.

The post tugged on the heartstrings of internet users who shared it far and wide before it ultimately got the attention of Google itself.

Responding to the tweet from their UK headquarters, Google wrote: "Dearest Ben's Nan. Hope you're well. In a world of billions of Searches, yours made us smile. Oh, and it's 1998. Thank YOU."

Lads, our hearts.
