Eurovision

He spent 14 years touring with one of Ireland's most successful boybands, but it's only now that Nicky Byrne is beginning to feel like an artist in his own right.

"When you’re in a band like Westlife, you are given a producer’s song so you put your vocals on it and then you try to deliver that when it goes live," he told SHEmazing today, as news of his Eurovision 2016 bid went public.

"But when you are writing a song, that’s from you and your heart."

Sunlight, Nicky's uptempo and oh-so catchy Eurovision entry, has in fact been a work in progress over the last two years.

Indeed, after getting its international debut in Stockholm in May, it'll feature on Nicky's upcoming album – his first since finishing with Westlife.

"I knew there would be a solo album. All the lads had released theirs so I knew mine would come in 2016."

A passion for performing is something that hasn't left Nicky, even now that he's more often found behind a radio mic on his 2FM show than in front of a crowd.

"Standing on a stage, I love it. Georgina [Ahern, Nicky's wife of 12 years] goes to me ‘Jesus Christ’ because she couldn’t even stand on a stage and look out.

"But some people just live for those moments.

"With Westlife you were lucky enough to pop up out of the ground or fly in from the roof but we cant do that because of the stage they create in Stolkholm.

"It’s all about that three minutes; to perform, show personality and deliver the song."

With RTÉ backing him for Eurovision and a profile already built up in Ireland thanks to Westlife, it'd be easy for the 37-year-old to get complacent – but he's determined to make his own mark at a solo artist.

"For Eurovision, the Westlife thing is going to help but I hope here that just because I’m on 2FM doesn’t take from people actually giving the song a spin on other station."

"This is not a 2FM thing or an RTE thing, it's me."

Listen to Nicky's full track here, and tune into The Ray D'Arcy Show on February 13 to hear it performed live:

Westlife/Eurovision fans, you're in for a treat this May.

Just last week, we reported that singer Nicky Byrne was in talks to represent Ireland at this year's Eurovision, and it seems the news is indeed true.

RTÉ confirmed the news this morning, announcing that Nicky would be heading to Sweden in the hopes of winning with his entry, Sunlight.

The song was co-written by Nicky and Wayne Hector, the mastermind behind a whopping seven of Westlife's hits, including Flying Without Wings, Swear It Again and World Of Our Own.

Award-winning composer Ronan Hardiman was also on board.

"I am honoured RTÉ have chosen me and believe in this song like I do," Nicky said today.

"Like many of us, I have grown up watching The Eurovision Song Contest... I have a great memory as a nine year old, of dancing around our sitting room in a tri-colour sweatshirt when Johnny Logan lifted the trophy in 1987.

"This year I go one step further, and actually walk on that stage to represent my country."

For the last several years, RTÉ has used the "Eurosong" format to decide on its annual entrant.

"We have a long and proud history with Eurovision, but we’ve had mixed results over the last few years," RTÉ's John McHugh said of the decision to change tacks.

Nicky will perform Sunlight live on The Ray D'Arcy Show on Saturday February 13, before heading to Stockholm in May.

While Nicky Byrne has admitted that he was making a return to the music industry this year on his 2FM radio show, we certainly didn't expect him to be taking things international.

And by international we mean representing Ireland in the perhaps the most entertaining and ridiculous music compeition to ever be produced.

Yes, reports have circulated today that Nicky is in talks to fly the Irish flag at Eurovision in Stockholm this May.

"Most people will be shocked as he was never the strongest singer in the band but he’s a great performer, he has good stage presence and he’s very likeable so who knows?" a source has told the Irish Mirror.

“It’s just crossing the t’s and dotting the i’s at this stage but Nicky looks set to following in Jedward’s footsteps and singing at the Eurovision."

“Shane and Mark have their record deals and their albums so maybe the Eurovision could relaunch Nicky’s pop career.”

Married to Bertie Ahern's daughter, Georgina, the 37-year-old father of three has become a popular figure in Irish media.

Following the split of Westlife after 14 years in the business, the former popstar found continued success with his RTE radio show, co-hosted by Jenny Greene, reeling in an average 163,000 listeners.

We are not sure if this means that there will be no televised selection process on the Late Late Show this year, but if we can have Nicky with a decent song to represent us, we don't really mind!

They’ve represented Ireland not once but twice at the Eurovision Song Contest: in both 2011 and 2012, when they finished eighth and 19th respectively.

But now Jedward are hoping it will be third-time lucky for their unique double act: they’re going for European glory once again next year.

And this time they want to perform on behalf of the UK.

With the BBC making a rule change which allows the public to nominate an entry – the 23-year-old Dublin twins reckon next year will be their year.

Indeed, during a chat with Mirror Online, Edward admitted it’s a “fantastic opportunity” for them.

Furthermore, the former X Factor contestants say they are currently in talks with TV producers to launch their own reality show, and revealed that they want to become a presenting partnership powerhouse like Ant and Dec.

We can’t wait!

Yes, Ireland was knocked out of the Eurovision in last night's semi-final, but we may have found the country's new musical saviour.

Following in the footsteps of Johnny Logan, Linda Martin, Dana and Dustin, these four Irish lads are hoping to take to the stage at tomorrow night's final in Vienna to represent the Emerald Isle.

How? Well… "We had this great idea, we're gonna get YouTube to come down and make an amazing video for us, and it's gonna blow up, and they're gonna have to put us in."

As well as prepping like mad for tomorrow night, the lads are also working on their debut EP, including future hits like Don't You Love Me, Why Don't You Love Me, How Can't you Love Me and If I Text You More, Would That Be Okay?

Spoof? Yes. Worth a watch? Again, yes.

Ireland may not have made it to the Eurovision final, but this year’s winner is a massive hit in the celebrity world.

Around 180 million people tuned in last night to watch Austrian drag artist Conchita Wurst be crowned the Eurovision Song Contest winner with a score of 290, after belting out a roof-raising ballad Rise Like a Phoenix.

“This is dedicated to everyone who believes in a future of peace and freedom,” a tearful Conchita said as she accepted the trophy. “We are unity and we are unstoppable.”

Celebrities took to Twitter last night to congratulate the singing sensation –  the alter ego of 25-year-old Tom Neuwirth.

Radio One DJ Jameela Jamil wrote, “I have nothing but love for Conchita.”

Comedian John Bishop added, “It’s only a song contest but tonight it showed talent can overcome prejudice and ignorance. Well done Conchita – I am glad I saw that moment.”

Boy George said, “Gorge. A vote for gay solidarity!”

Former Steps singer Claire Richards seemed to think she had been the inspiration behind Conchita’s win writing, “I think Conchita nicked her performance idea from my tour solo!!! Long dress on a plinth!”

Hmmmm… maybe not Claire.

TV presenter Gabby Logan added, “Conchita the World Beater.”

We really are gutted for Kasey and Can-Linn.

Last night’s Eurovision semi-final featured Austria’s drag artist Conchita Wurst and promised to match the drama of Tuesday night’s Ukraine-Russia tension.

There were the usual crazy acts, bizarre performances and cringe-worthy songs that also featured in the first semi-final, but Irish viewers were more invested in this show as our own was to take to the stage.

While Kasey gave it her all, Ireland’s performance faded into a medley of very similar songs and performances, so it wasn’t all that surprising we didn’t make the final cut.

After the results were announced, the singer said: “We were delighted we got to represent our country on a world stage,” Smith said after the results were announced. “Being in the final would have been a bonus but you can just never predict how these things are going to go. We put our heart and soul into it and gave it our all. It’s given me a real taste for being on the stage and as far as I’m concerned, this is only the beginning for me. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience.”

The ten countries to make it through to Saturday’s final are Switzerland, Norway, Greece, Slovenia, Poland, Romania, Malta, Belarus, Austria and  Finland.

Finally something interesting happens on The Late Late Show!

Things nearly ended in a physical fight during last night’s Eurosong competition between Louis Walsh, Linda Martin and Aslan’s Billy McGuinness.

After Billy called the competition a fix due to Louis’ association with two of the acts, Linda marched into the audience to confront the Aslan musician and things got so heated, Tubridy was forced to step in between them.

You have to watch it.

Former X Factor contestant Eoghan Quigg is in the running to perform this year’s Irish contribution to the Eurovision contest.

One of five possible acts to take on the seemingly impossible task of winning the Eurovison for Ireland, Eoghan, who came third place in the 2008 X Factor at only 16 years of age,  will be performing The Movie Song written by Karl Broderick.

His album, self-titled Eoghan Quigg, was released in April 2009 and reached number one in Ireland.

Oh, and just so you know, here is what he looks like now:
