"Siobhán tagged 17 new photos of you." Words that strike fear in the heart of every hungover person come Sunday morning.

It's bad enough to hav to deal with a headache and hazy memories of the night before, without the whole world having to relive your every sweaty moment in glorious technicolour via Facebook.

Luckily, the folks in Silicon Valley have heard our pleas and have finally come up with a way to ensure that the general public is not subjected to every embarrassing photo of you. Facebook may not have intended that to be the main point of their new Moments app, but for us its definitely the main perk.

Launched yesterday, Facebook's new standalone app allows you to sync and share photos with the other people in those photos, all the while keeping things as private as you like.

So if you're at a wedding, party or other event, everyone present can log into a Moments group and share their photos with other guests at the touch of a button. Gone are the days of taking the same group shot over and over with different phones and cameras – simply take it once and sync it.

As for posting the evidence to Facebook later, you can choose to share a Moments album on your Timeline or keep it private… as long as everyone agrees.

"Syncing photos with the Moments app is a private way to give photos to friends and get the photos you didn’t take," Facebook's Product Manager Will Ruben explains.

We'll definitely be giving this app a go – and setting it to "Private" for now…
