It’s common knowledge that the world of fashion isn’t exactly open-minded when it comes to the definition of “beauty.”

With such a severe gap in the number of plus-size models (or anyone over a size zero) on the catwalks and on magazine covers, it’s no surprise that the fashion industry falls down in other ways, too.

A recent investigation by style site The Fashion Spot focusing on the number of people of colour featured on the covers of style magazines has highlighted just how difficult it can be for models to gain recognition if they do not fit the “perfect” ideals. In a survey of 44 major print publications from 2014, it was found that models of colour featured on just a fifth of covers during the year.

To make matters worse, certain magazines used only white models on their covers. Vogue UK did feature more than one group cover including models of different ethnicities, but writer Gillian Forbes noted that the magazine “hasn't featured a woman of colour on a solo cover in 12 years (Naomi Campbell got that honour).”

The piece was later updated to note that celebrity models including Beyoncé, Salma Hayek and Rihanna had featured on Vogue UK covers in the last 12 years, but that no other fashion models of colour had featured except for Naomi Campbell.

Of course, Vogue UK’s editors could argue that they are simply featuring the models of the moment, regardless of skin colour, weight or any other factor. However Gillian also notes that “one of Britain's most prominent and in-demand models, Jourdan Dunn, wasn't afforded a cover, despite her impressive body of work and overall popularity. Yet Cara Delevingne and Kate Moss were given two covers each… If a high-profile black model isn’t afforded a major cover in her own country, there’s a problem.”

Vogue UK is not the only magazine to be slated in the research – Vogue Russia, Paris, Ukraine and Teen Vogue also featured only white models on solo covers, as did Harper’s Bazaar US and UK. Coincidence… or selling tactic?

Fashion media has come a long way in recent years, but it’s disappointing to see these magazines fall down in such a big way.

It’s true that designers and publications are extremely strict about their choice of model – you just need to look at the body shape that dominates the catwalks to see that – but it’s distressing that the same strict decision-making might apply to something as basic as skin colour. Surely we have moved beyond that kind of small-minded thinking by now?

In this day and age, diversity should be a given, not something that is so glaringly lacking in so many industries.

In winter we're forced to cover up our lovely outfits in giant jackets and coats. So if anything needs to stand out, it's our accessories – specifically, our handbag.

Whether your bag is purely for show or whether it contains your entire life (laptop, wallet, make-up, tampons…), it's an essential for any style-conscious lady.

Here are a few we're dying to get our hands on this season…

1. The clutch
Unless you're seriously minimalist when it comes to personal possessions, a clutch bag is strictly for nights out, but it beats carrying your giant leather handbag through a nightclub any day.

Hard Glitter Clutch, €52, Warehouse

2. The shopper
A hold-all, functional bag will see you through well into next year. We love this leather and suede mix one:

Leather Suede Lucy Shopper, €69, Oasis

3. The satchel
Perfect for accessorising your winter woollies. How gorgeous is this structured burgundy one?

Panel Satchel, €29.99, New Look

4. The "holds everything, and I mean everything" bag
It's an overnight bag, an airplane carry-on and everything in between. We all need a bag with seemingly endless capacity for storage. So what if you need to replace the zip every once in a while?

Pebbled Faux Leather Tote, €25.45, Forever 21

5. The budget buy
If you're the kind of girl who wears a different bag with every outfit, budget buys are your best friend. We're in love with this navy snakeskin number:

Contrast Shopper, €22.99, New Look

6. The backpack
Festivals, nights out or general day to day wandering around – a backpack will see you through.

Pile Backpack, €29.99, H&M

7. The obligatory expensive one
A girl can dream…

Michael Kors Bedford Zip Top Satchel, €350, Brown Thomas

Fashion is a minefield, and while some people seem to make being stylish look effortless, for most of us it's not that easy.

We bet a few of these questions have passed your lips while trying to plan an outfit…

1. Why have I got nothing to wear?
The eternal question…

2. How does everyone else manage to wear something different EVERY DAY?
Are they magic?

3. Hmmm… I can probably get away without ironing this, right?
It would just get wrinkled again anyways. I’ll just iron the important parts.

4. Dry-clean only? Ah, lads.
Not a chance I’m shelling out €25 to have a skirt cleaned. To the washing machine with you!

5. How come this outfit looked so lovely before I left the house?
My skirt was NOT this short two hours ago. My hair was also not a frizzy mess.

6. Are my knickers totally visible right now?
These leggings are just glorified tights, aren’t they? I KNEW it. And now it’s too late to change.

7. Dear lord why are these shoes so painful?
Why do I even bother with heels?

8. Am I mixing prints in a stylish way right now or do I look like a hobo?
It’s a fine line.

Today is the Queen of Pop's birthday, and we have so much to thank her for. A lot of them were crimes against fashion – but without them, we wouldn't have the fond memories of the late '90s/early '00s like we do. Thanks Brit!

Here are the biggest fashion mistakes we made that we can thank her for!

1. When she tricked us into thinking all denim everything was cool.

2. When she tried to make 'good girl pimp' a thing.

3. When we NEEDED her red latex catsuit for Christmas. Thankfully, mom vetoed that one fairly quickly.

4. The curse of the low-rise jean that almost cost us our dignity many times in our early teens

6. Tinted. Sunglasses.

7. All of the times she made us think we would make sexy cowgirls.

8. When we thought we needed a crimper more than we needed air.

9. When we begged and begged for Skechers because Brit wore them.

10. When she made us plan our wedding aged 13 and it looked very…velvety.

We love when the fashion world gets a little tongue-in-cheek and pokes some fun at itself.

That's why we were delighted to hear that majorly posh French fashion label A.P.C. had created what has to be the cheekiest design of the season: the Douche Bag.

The minimalist leather bags come in metallic silver, white, grey and yellow among other colours, and go on sale next week. Rather than having the brand's name embossed on the front, the bags simply read "Douche." Although the word is a full-on insult in some countries, in French it does of course mean "shower," so A.P.C. got away with being kinda bold!

Speaking about the unisex backpacks, the label's creative director Jean Touitou said, "I will simply say this about the 'Douche Bag' bag: Product description: an excellent all-purpose pouch, for men. (Women can use it too). The name meaning: those who know don’t say, and those who say don’t know."

It's not the first time A.P.C. have come over all childish with their products – last year they teamed up with cosmetics line Aesop to launch Post-Poo Drops, deodorising oil to gently perfume the toilet bowl after "instances where vigorous activity has occurred in the bathroom." Oh… okay then.

Whatever about the Post-Poo range, we can see the Douche Bag becoming December's celebrity cult product – but at $135 (€107) a pop we're not sure if we'll be indulging ourselves!

Model Myla Dalbesio is a healthy and slim US size 10 (UK size 14), with gorgeous curves. Unfortunately, in the fashion world she is still sometimes classed as a “plus size” model.

Fashion house Calvin Klein hit the headlines this week when it featured her in its Perfectly Fit campaign.

Tensions were high when CK published the photos from the shoot, starring Myla alongside models Jourdan Dunn and Lara Stone.

The main reason for the overwhelming criticism was that CK had dared to refer to a totally normal body as plus size. Twitter was awash with users expressing their disgust and vowing to shun the brand’s products.

Yes, it does seem bizarre that a major fashion label would court controversy by insisting that a size 10 is anywhere near a large size, but the fact is that CK never said any such thing.

In a statement released after the backlash first began earlier this week, the brand said the Perfectly Fit campaign was designed to cater to “the needs of different women” and would hopefully be viewed as “more inclusive.” Why should that be viewed as a bad thing?

The plus size movement really gained traction back in 2010 and 2011, most notably with the appearance of curvy models Tara Lynn, Candice Huffine and Robyn Lawley on a Vogue Italia cover.

Since then there has been very little development with the use of models of larger sizes on the catwalk and in photo shoots. So CK’s decision to use a healthier model, even if she is only one or two sizes larger than the normal stick-thin catwalk figure, can surely only be a positive move.

Even Myla herself was quick to defend the label’s decision. “It’s not like [Calvin Klein] released this campaign and were like ‘Whoa, look, there’s this plus size girl in our campaign,’” she said. “They released me in this campaign with everyone else; there’s no distinction. It’s not a separate section for plus size girls.”

When compared to the Victoria’s Secret recent Perfect Body ads, which featured model upon model with the exact same boyish figure, CK’s new campaign seems like a very refreshing change. Yes, the choice of models are still not fully representative of “normal” women, but it’s surely a step in the right direction?

Rather than lashing out at fashion designers for not using curvy enough models, we should be celebrating the fact that progress is being made. The fact that a size 10 model can be included in a high-fashion photo shoot without the designers making a big song and dance about it is a great development. Instead of criticising it, we should be asking for more of the same.

It's two weeks before payday and you suddenly realise you have all of €50 left in your bank account. Cue a fortnight of Tesco Value meals, walking to work and checking EVERY pair of jeans you own for a stray fiver.

If this sounds like your life on a regular basis, the way you shop could be to blame

Here are a few bad habits to keep an eye out for next time you hit the shops… it's time to say goodbye to that mid-month money crisis!

1. You try too hard to keep up with celebs and style bloggers
Yes, we may spend the majority of our working day lusting over Taylor Swift's outfits but that doesn't mean we should be planning to replicate her look entirely with an all-out splurge in Brown Thomas. Celebrity fashion is a great source of inspiration, but always try to keep purchases well within your budget.

2. You shop now… and think later
That amazing winter coat might look absolutely stunning with your new leather boots, but it's not going to be quite so alluring when you're struggling to pay rent and bills next week. Try to keep track of your spending with an online banking app or simply by keeping receipts and taking note. Little purchases (or one big one) can soon add up to deplete your month's finances.

3. You shop by trend
Metallics and leopard print might be all over the catwalk this season but are they really necessary in your wardrobe? Your overall style (and your bank balance) will be much better off with a closet full of great basic pieces and one or two on-trend items, rather than a pile of one-season clothes that you know won't see the light of day after a couple of wears.

4. You buy a new outfit for every event
Night out with the girls? New outfit. Family dinner? New outfit. Work colleague's wedding? New outfit. Updating your wardrobe every time another social event comes around is a surefire way to run out of cash. Try on a few pieces at home, or borrow from a friend, before you go running off to Topshop in a panic.

5. You impulse buy
If you're anything like us, at least two thirds of your wardrobe consists of items you bought on a whim and will never wear, though you convince yourself you'll DEFINITELY need them some day. Next time you're tempted to impulse buy, step out of the shop and wait a day or two before making your decision. If you're still lusting after the item, maybe it's worth it. If not, well you've just saved yourself fifty quid!

6. You buy the same stuff over and over
"Yes but this is a SPECIAL pair of black skinny jeans." If your wardrobe is full of the same kind of items over and over, it might be time to shake up your spending habits. Go through all your duplicates, try them on and you'll soon realise you don't really need to buy seconds (or thirds) just yet.

7. You're a divil for online sales
When that 30% off email comes pinging into your inbox, it's as if the internet is calling out to you to spend, spend, spend. Wow, you had no idea you needed that gorgeous Zara dress that's now down to €80. Why? Well, because you probably DON'T need it.

8. You're a brand name snob
Okay, you make the odd trip to Penneys but aside from that you're a River Island/Oasis/Topshop fiend at heart. As for cheaper chain stores or budget shops, you'd never been seen dead buying something there. But the secret of the truly stylish among us is that they don't care where they buy their clothes as long as they fit well and look fab.

9. You shun charity shops
You can't bear the thought of shopping in Oxfam, but that vintage shop next door tempts you every time. Newsflash: they're pretty much the same thing. Yes, you'll have to root around the charity shop shelves for longer and you won't find something every time, but think how smug you'll feel when you walk out with that AMAZING dress/coat/shirt for a fraction of the price it should have been sold for!

10. You have no idea what's in your wardrobe
Unless you've moved house or had a spring clean recently, you probably have no idea what you'd find if you raided your own closet. Spend a few hours shopping your wardrobe next time you have the urge to hit the shops!
