Long before we had reality TV stars, we all took our fashion advice from our favourite singers and bands. Sometimes it was a good thing, and sometimes, well, let us just say the Spice Girls have a lot to answer for. Here are ten occasions when music videos influenced fashion:

The Spice Girls, and platforms

If it weren’t for those damn Spice Girls, we never would have had to suffer the pain of looking at old photos of ourselves sporting a pair of bright pink, glittery platforms.

Olivia Newton-John, and leg warmers and spandex

She just made it look so good, we had to give it a try!

Cyndi Lauper, and bad haircuts

Oh yeah, it looked good in the music video, but when paired with a school uniform and boring shoes? Not so cool.

MC Hammer, and ‘Hammer Pants’

These are kind of coming back into fashion now, and we’re glad. Sure, they’re kind of an acquired taste, but they are just so comfortable. Thanks, MC!

Nirvana, and dirty jumpers

If you wanted to be a true grunger, you needed a jumper that looked like you found it in a grave, and some messy hair. You can thank Nirvana for this one (which, actually, is an ongoing trend among some teens today!)

Christina Aguilera (and every pop star at the time), and belly tops

And if you had a belly top, you needed your belly button pierced. Parents across the globe must have cursed Ms. Aguilera for this trend.

All Saints, and combats
Now THIS is a trend we’re glad we got on board with. In fact, we might just run out and buy a pair of cargo green combats right now, for old time’s sake.

Avril Lavigne, and ties

Wearing a tie over a tank top was THE thing to do back in the day, thanks to Avril Lavigne. We can pin the ‘excessive number of bracelets on one arm’ trend on her too.

Beyoncé, and body suits

This is a more modern trend, but a favourite among many. We hope it dies out soon, so our children never need know the hardship of going to the toilet when you’re wearing a body suit.

Gwen Stefani, and red lips with blonde hair

She may have copied Marilyn Monroe here, but we took our lead from Gwen when she hit our screens as No Doubt’s front woman. If only we could have pulled it off half as well as she did!

The underwear as outerwear style is set to be huge for the coming fashion season, but many of us are sheepish to try this tricky trend. Ciara O'Doherty popped along to Debenhams to get a masterclass on how to nail this look with ease. Watch the video above to see the three gorgeous looks we came up with.

If you’ve ever spotted someone on the street and wondered where you could get a dress just like their’s, Kate Bosworth’s app is the thing you need.

All you have to do is snap a photo of the thing you’re looking for, and the app, called Style Thief, will do an image search online to see where it’s available to buy. In order to make money, Style Thief will then receive a commission of the retail sales.

Bosworth explained her idea: “Everyone has fashion envy. Everyone can relate to that feeling of looking at an editorial, for example – or a friend, or the runway, for that matter – wanting to steal something exactly as you’re seeing it, or something similar.”

There are a few other similar apps around, but none that have really taken the world by storm, so Kate has plenty of opportunity to cause a splash.

We think the idea sounds great, though it might be a tad awkward if we start snapping photos of strangers on the street!

Chanel are the latest fashion house to suffer an embarrassing dose of the photoshop fail.

Many people commented on the obvious photoshop of the model’s neck, which looks strangely longer than it probably should.

The bad photoshop job was first noticed by followers of the Chanel Facebook page who commented that the model’s neck took away from the amazing watches on display.

Do you think fashion houses go too far with unrealistic photoshopping, like this one?

With Longitude just around the corner, it’s time for us to start getting festival ready. While there’s nothing wrong with being prepared with some fancy wellies, it can be still fun to glam it up when it comes to our favourite festivals. Here’s a list of some fashionable footwear that you just might just get away with wearing at this year’s summer festivals:

Biker Boots

bikerboots
Practical and stylish, the biker boots are must have for this festival season.  Some are on the pricey side but fortunately there are some affordable pairs at our local high-street shops.

Runners

ALEXARUNNERS

Depending on how muddy the festival grounds really are, runners are the perfect festival footwear for keeping comfy and stylish while standing for hours on end.

Tall boots

Verging on wellies but not quite. Tall boots are not only perfect for the muddy festival grounds but stylish too.

Jellies

If you’re lucky and we mean really lucky, jellies are the essential fun footwear for this year’s festivals. This of course depends on the weather because no matter how colourful those jellies are they won’t feel nice when saturated with mud.

She has taken on the runway, gotten her own fragrance and mentored on The Face, but now it seems Naomi Campbell has fashion in her sights.

It seems Naomi has taken a leaf out of Kate Moss’s book as she prepares to launch her own fashion line – and we can’t contain our excitement!

The supermodel is currently in negotiations about possible collaborations, saying: “I’ve been approached by a few brands to design a line for them. It’s something that interests me and I’m in negotiations.”

Kate Moss, who has her own Topshop collection, may have been Naomi’s inspiration for starting her own line.

Talking about her friends who have their own stamp on clothing collections, Naomi said: “I’m always so proud of my friends who develop great lines in fashion. I’m genuinely happy to wear the clothes they create.”

It’s not just clothes that The Face host will be designing, she has her eye on accessories, lingerie and swimwear.

Wimbledon starts today, and as usual Centre Court will be abuzz with high fashion style for both men and women.

Even if you aren’t a fan of the sport, the tennis tournament always brings out some A-list celebs and we can’t help but want to gawp at their chosen outfit.

Alex Longmore, who has dressed the likes of Claudia Schiffer, says this year is all about the dress and colour.

The stylist said: “It will be all about the dress. Forget separates and trousers – it’s going to be all about knee-length dresses, inspired by the Duchess of Cambridge’s look.”

The stylist also predicts that this year will still be about classic tennis white, although their will be a few changes: “I predict an elegant Wimbledon this year with white taking centre court followed closely by an array of block pastel colours, and, for those celebrities that really want to hog the limelight, bold reds.”

Nick Ede, fashion and brand expert agrees with Alex, saying: “All in all, expect this season to be a sea of bright, strong colour, pretty pastels and bright white and neon accents. I can’t wait! But bring your shades!”
