Lena Dunham got fans talking last month when she revealed that exercise had helped her to deal with anxiety and depression in ways she had "never dreamed possible."

The actress and writer posted a picture of herself looking fighting fit in a crop top and leggings, praising fitness trainer Tracy Anderson for her improved physique – and her calmer mind. Lena has been using a mix of AcroYoga and resistance training, and says Tracy's methods have shown her "the light."

Lena's not the only one hitting the gym hard, though. Check out any red carpet pictures of late and you're more likely to see strong, toned arms and healthy bodies than caved in stomachs and gaunt faces.

As any fitness addict knows, there's more to life than depriving yourself of good food, and the high you get after a great gym session just can't be topped. Here are a few other female celebs who are embracing a healthier way of life…

Ellie Goulding
As well as being a keen runner (she completed her last half marathon in 1 hour 41 minutes), Ellie also boxes regularly and does high intensity yoga, saying "I treat fitness as an essential part of my life. I see it as [important] as a meal time, or something else I have to do, like go to a meeting." To top it off, she sticks to a vegan, plant-based diet. We're loving how fierce she looks in this video:

Charlotte Crosby
Geordie Shore's Charlotte dropped from a size 14 to a size 8 in less than a year, after some particularly unflattering bikini shots of her on the beach last summer prompted her to change her lifestyle. Her exercise programme, Charlotte's 3 Minute Belly Blitz, has outsold Frozen in DVD sales, and she keeps fans updated on her own fitness progress via her social media outlets.

Vanessa Hudgens
The High School Musical star has a naturally slim physique, but calls exercise her "serious addiction." To get her fix (and her washboard abs), Vanessa uses a mix of spinning, yoga and anything involving music. Speaking about the natural high she gets from working out, the actress said, "You just feel like you can accomplish anything. When you push yourself through a really hard workout, it’s a mental thing rather than a physical thing … and I love that. It’s a good self-esteem booster.” Word.

Rozanna Purcell
Irish model Roz was the envy of women all over the country last month when she shared this picture of herself looking seriously toned during a shoot for Primark. Chatting to SHEmazing! about her exercise routine, Roz says she cycles, swims and boxes regularly, and loves to run when she's injury free. Chatting about her first go at boxing, the 24-year-old said, "The first class almost killed me. Afterward I felt like I needed to go lie down for the rest of the day. But now I’ve found my stride and I’m loving it."

She wowed fans last week with an Instagram picture of her enviably flat stomach – and now Rozanna Purcell has revealed to SHEmazing! that boxing sessions are her new-found fitness obsession.

Rozanna at Friday's VIP Style Awards

Roz, who finished in the top ten of the Miss Universe 2010 competition held in Las Vegas and runs the immensely popular naturalbornfeeder.com, reckons that maintaining a flat stomach is “90 percent diet, and just 10 percent exercise.” Super-fit Ms Purcell is already well-known for competing in gruelling Ironman competitions, but lately she says that she's trying new workouts. “I’ve started boxing about three or four months ago in Beau Jack’s off Camden Street. I had friends tell me ‘oh you think you’re fit – you need to try these boxing classes.’

“The first class almost killed me. Afterward I felt like I needed to go lie down for the rest of the day. But now I’ve found my stride and I’m loving it. The classes are packed full of guys too so you really have no choice but to push yourself. “I still cycle or swim three or four times a week, and I run when I’m injury-free, but boxing is starting to take over a bit."

She adds: "My boyfriend Bressie keeps telling me I have to make a decision between boxing and triathlons – both for as long as I’m getting away with doing both, I’ll keep both up.”

The gym isn’t for everyone – an hour on the treadmill or even five minutes of a spin bike is enough to make some people avoid exercise altogether.

However, these days there is such a huge number of ways to get fit that you are bound to find something you love – without having to step foot near a treadmill.

Here are some fun alternatives to the regular gym classes you may just love:

1. Boxercise
Stressful day at work? Did you housemate leave the milk out of the fridge again? Then this is the class for you! Channel your anger into fat-burning with boxercise and you will feel stress-free as well as getting toned and fit!

2. Pole-dancing
Forget what you think you know – pole dancing is incredible. Not only does it tone and train your core, once you master some moves you are going to feel like a graceful goddess up there.

3. Anti-gravity yoga
There's no doubting the benefits of yoga on your mind and body, but if regular mat yoga has you feeling a bit bored, this could be the high-flying solution! Using material hanging from the ceiling, you will soon fall in love with this acrobatic fitness craze!

4. Ballet-barre
From Taylor Swift to Miranda Kerr, ballet barre is THE celeb fitness craze of the year – and for good reason. Not only do you tone your core and burn some major calories, you get to look like a freakin' ballerina while doing it!

5. Dance
Whether it be contemporary, hip-hop or ballroom, if you love to dance, why not make it your new hobby? Sure, you might feel shy at first but once you get to know people and learn a few moves you'll wonder what took you so long to get into it in the first place!

Kim Kardashian knows how to rock her curves, but she seemed to be throwing some shade at her current appearance in a recent Instagram post.

The reality star shared a throwback picture of herself and Kourtney at the Emmys back in 2009, and was quick to note that she had gained some weight since then.

Kim captioned the picture, "Since it's award season I will do my #TBT to the time Kourtney and I went to the Emmys. She was pregnant and I was about 15 to 20 pounds thinner."

Given that it's been almost six years since that picture was taken, during which time Kim kas given birth to the adorable North, it's understandable that she would have gained some weight. We hope she realises she looks just as fab now as she did then… plus she's ditched the hoop earrings on the red carpet which is always a bonus!

Fans shared their reassurance in the comments, with one saying, "Everyone changes body wise u look beautiful just the way u r," and another noting, "Yeah but now you have a child." True!

Kim has always been open about her health and fitness journey, and shortly after North's birth she revealed she had gone on an extreme liquid diet combined with an "intense" gym routine after ranting on Twitter about her "huge hips and butt."

We're glad to see a celebrity being honest about their body image issues, but we hope Kim realises that her curves are gorgeous!

January is only half over?! We can't believe it either.

Ideally we'd like to curl up in bed for the next two weeks, but Lady Gaga's latest Instagram snap has given us a bit of a kick up the bum to start looking after ourselves again!

The singer was recovering from a hangover earlier this week, but rather than having a duvet day with some drive-thru McDonalds, she instead took to the gym for a spot of bikram yoga.

Gaga posted a picture of one of her poses with the caption, "Starting my day off feeling strong, gotta sweat out the whiskey from last nights jam session." Good woman yourself!

Wearing just a black sports bra and leopard print knickers, the singer showed off her natural curves and toned figure – a great change from the super-skinny singer we once knew.

Gaga is a big yoga and pilates fan, as is evident from her social media feeds – just last week she posted this photo of herself rocking out while toning up, with the caption, "ACDC and Pilates equals I will knock you out b*tch. TNT, I'm dynamite."

All we can say is…wow! Geordie Shore’s Charlotte has had a hell of a few months, putting her all into losing weight and unveiling her new figure only weeks ago.

Now, it has been revealed that her DVD, released in time for the new year, has broken records to become the first fitness DVD to top a mainstream chart in over TEN years! Not only that, but the DVD has reportedly sold twice as many copies as…wait for it…FROZEN! Is that even possible?

According to The Daily Mail, when compared with the highly successful fitness DVD released by Davina McCall which sold 19, 913 copies, Charlotte is way ahead of the game with 41, 251 sold so far.

It seems that Charlotte’s 3 Minute Belly Blitz has become a firm favourite with those looking to lose a few inches, and Charlotte has become their inspiration!

The reality TV star spoke of her shock at the DVD’s success, saying: “I can’t believe my DVD has outsold Hollywood films like Frozen. Now I’m determined to keep the weight off. I never want to go back to that beached whale look I had before.”

The festive season really is a time of excess and indulgence, and it's easy to let your healthy habits slip.

Here are some common mistakes to avoid over the next few weeks…

1. Assuming all veg is healthy
Yes, vegetables are generally the best choice when filling up your plate, but be aware of how certain dishes have been cooked. Creamed veg or cream-filled soups should be eaten in moderation, and watch out for veggies that have been fried in butter or that have fatty or sugary glazes.

2. Not eating before a party
It might seem like a stellar idea to skip lunch so that you can make up for the lost calories with an extra cocktail, but eating less throughout the day will mean you're far more likely to overeat in the evenings. Mindlessly picking at plates of finger food is a surefire way to ruin all of your hard work. Keep healthy snacks like raw almonds on hand to keep hunger at bay before you head out.

3. Beating yourself up about skipping the gym
Christmas is a busy, busy time and some days it's impossible to fit everything in. If you've had to miss that spinning class or cardio session, it's not the end of the world. If you're finding that a daily hour long gym session is too time-consuming this month, try to fit in smaller exercise sessions – a 15 or 20 minute jog before your morning shower will do you the world of good.

4. Letting every day be a cheat day
You've promised yourself you'll be on top of your diet plan today, and yet your willpower disappears as soon as your co-worker arrives with a box of Roses. Try to save your indulgences for special treats – your mum's mince pies or that cheeky glass of Baileys.

5. Getting the office nibbles
Okay, you've had one biscuit from that Christmas box. Just the one, though. Until you get up to use the printer. Sure, just one more, so. It's easy to overeat on treats without noticing, so be aware of what you're snacking on and try to make healthier choices!

6. Cramming too much activity in
With friends and family to catch up with, your Christmas social diary can become over packed before you know it. Avoid burning yourself out by only saying "yes" to events you really can't miss.

Earlier this week, Made in Chelsea star Millie Mackintosh shared a picture of herself getting ready for the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, thanking her stylists for all their help.

Posing in a flesh-coloured corset and nothing else, the star’s slender frame was hard to miss.

Controversy was soon sparked by the model’s visible “thigh gap,” with comments posted on the picture saying things like, “I think she needs to eat a little more” and “How do you live with yourself knowing you may cause malnutrition in women because they desire to look like you and all of the #vs models? How do any of you???? It's honestly disgusting.”

Millie makes no secret of the fact that her lean frame is down to a lot of hard work in the gym and a clean diet. As well as various underwear shots, the star’s Instagram is also full of posts like this:

There’s no shame in having a slender body shape, especially if you’ve worked hard to be as healthy as possible. What’s scary is the growing trend of young women starving themselves to get similar results.

There is a serious lack of education out there about what it takes to have a healthy and slim body. Things have changed for the better in recent years with the growth of female fitness bloggers like Belfast’s Peanut Butter Girl, but there is still a perception among many that thin is healthy, and that the only way to be healthy is to eat less. The thigh gap trend is a worrying result of this belief that being skinny is the Holy Grail.

Open up any magazine or click into any fashion website and you’re immediately presented with images of stick-thin catwalk models. Some we know – Cara Delevingne, Kendall Jenner and co. – and some we don’t. The running theme is that they all have impossibly slender figures.

While some of their body shapes might simply be genetic – Cara herself has spoken about her own thigh gap, calling it an imperfection – the reality is, they can’t all be.

So let’s stop looking to the high-fashion catwalks for our health and fitness inspiration. Let’s instead focus on more fitness-friendly models like Millie Mackintosh. Yes, her body shape might not be for everyone, but we can all learn from her determination and commitment to staying healthy.

Next time you’re feeling like you need a motivation boost, check out some of the pictures from the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show – they're far more inspiring than anything you'll see at New York Fashion Week.

Slim? Yes. Fit? Yes. Malnourished? No. Something to learn from, surely.

No matter how healthy you eat, a sluggish metabolism will still limit the amount of calories your body burns for energy, slowing down weight loss.

Some people are lucky to have a super-speedy metabolism, but for those of us who don't, it's important to give things a kick start whenever we can.

You don't need to make any drastic changes to boost your metabolism – a few small things here and there will get things moving nicely!

Here are a few tricks to keep in mind…

1. Get a good cardio workout
Some tough aerobic exercise two or three times a week for 45 minutes is all it takes to keep your metabolism ticking along. Your body will keep burning calories at a higher rate for up to 14 hours after one exercise session – you can't say no to a perk like that! So head out for a run or a cycle or hop up on the treadmill to get your pulse racing!

2. Add intervals to your workout
Switching up the intensity of your workout can make a huge difference to your body's calorie-burning power. Run or cycle at a solid speed for two minutes, with a minute's slow running in between, and repeat. Increase the length of the faster intervals as you get fitter. This way, you're really getting the most out of that 45 minutes of exercise!

3. Eat breakfast!
There is just no excuse to skip breakfast – even a piece of fruit on the go is better than nothing. Your metabolism slows down over night to conserve energy while you're not eating, so a meal within an hour of waking will get things going again.

4. Eat something small before bed
We know late-night eating goes against all the weight loss propaganda, but a small snack is enough to regulate your blood sugar before you sleep. Many nutritionists recommend eating a teaspoon of almond butter just before sleep, so that you wake up feeling energised the next day.

5. Add some spice to your food
Cayenne pepper is the weight loss wonder food – a sprinkle over your meal is all that's needed to raise your body's temperature and in turn kick up your metabolic rate. Other warming spices like cinnamon serve a similar purpose!

6. Eat more dairy
The calcium in dairy products like yoghurt and cheese really helps your body's calorie burning efforts. A couple of portions of low-fat dairy each day are all you need.

7. Take a stroll
Sitting still for an hour or more at a time is a surefire way to reduce your metabolic rate. A lunchtime stroll outside or even moving from your desk to get a glass of water is enough to get things going again.

8. Drink more green tea
Skip the Barry's and go for some green tea instead – it's full of fab antioxidants called catechins which can raised your metabolic rate by up to 4% per day. It's a proven weight-loss tool too. If you don't like the taste, opt for a lemon or mint flavoured green tea instead.

If you're trying to stay in shape or maintain a healthy weight, it can be hard to tell which tricks are working for your body and which aren't.

Sure, you battled your chocolate cravings at 11am but then you ended up eating twice as much dessert as usual after dinner. Sometimes, it's better to relax your attitude to food and fitness and just do what feels right.

Here are some health rules it's okay to break every once in a while…

1. No junk food, ever
Denying yourself when you have cravings can often backfire later in the day when you overindulge without thinking. If you have a craving for something sweet or unhealthy and it doesn't pass, don't just block it out! It's better to eat something unhealthy and enjoy it in the moment, rather than overeating later and feeling guilty for it.

2. Only eat salads
Yes, plain salads are a great option if you're trying to eat lightly, but they lack the comfort of heartier foods. Why not swap that boring lettuce for a non-creamy soup, some grilled veg or a wholewheat sandwich? You'll feel fuller and more satisfied without harming your weight loss plan. Adding cooked grains or beans to a salad can also help to make it more appealing, without adding fat or sugar.

3. Exercise every day
Your body needs time to rest! If you're lacking in sleep, allow yourself a lie-in and skip that morning spin class. In the long run it'll be better for your health and fitness levels.

4. Control your portions
"Portion control" seems to be the word of the year for anyone with an interest in clean eating and fitness. But certain non-starchy foods like salad leaves, peppers, celery and cucumber do not need to be strictly controlled. If you find you're getting sick of tiny dinners or feeling unsatisfied, try adding extra amounts of these safe foods to your plate.

5. No eating after 6pm
Your body doesn't automatically store calories as fat if they're consumed at night. If you've stayed late at work or are starving after an evening workout, give your body the fuel it needs. Skipping meals for the sake of not eating after dark will just slow down your metabolism in the long run. Try to keep evening meals healthy – but don't deprive yourself of food!

6. No bread
Yes, white bread is a refined carb that is generally high in calories. But wholegrain breads are packed with fibre and will leave you feeling full without bloating. Carbohydrates are your body's preferred source of energy, so give in to your needs!

7. No fatty foods
Fried and greasy foods should generally be avoided if you're dieting – but their high fat content isn't the only reason they're bad. Certain foods contain high levels of healthy fats which your body actually needs to help absorb nutrients. Nuts, seeds, olive oil and avocado might be high in fat on paper, but they're better than a snack box from the chipper any day!

Congratulations to the star, does this mean a permanent move Stateside for her and fiancé, David McIntosh? Only time will tell but they have been spending a LOT of time over there these past few months!
