Without a doubt, Dr Charles Eugster has got to be the world’s fittest 94-year-old. In fact, he is the World’s Fittest Old Age Pensioner and believes good nutrition and exercise are the best ways to stay healthy.

Charles doesn’t take any medication and has no ailments like any other person in their nineties would have. However, he doesn’t believe it is just him who can be fit and healthy, saying: “For me, growing old is a joy; it’s wonderful, it’s one of the best parts of my life and that could be for everybody. Most of us can be healthy in old age.”

Proving just how fit he is, last year, the 34 times winner of the World Masters Rowing Championship completed the Strenflex European Championships where he did 61 chin-ups, 50 push-ups, 48 abdominal crunches and 57 dips – we can’t even do one chin-up, eek!

Working out in the gym three to four times a week, Charles believes you can change your ways, no matter your age: “Old age can be a chamber of horrors but it’s never too late to change your life and try something new.”

So, there’s hope for us yet!

Exercise is important for helping to keep your body and mind fit and healthy. However, some ladies are a little bit lax about working out – citing the fact that gyms are expensive or a lack of time.

Running is one of the easiest workouts you can do: it’s free, it’s right outside your door, you can go for however long you like and you can set your own pace.

Here are four tips for the beginner runner:

Slow and steady
For your first run, go slow and steady but remember to slightly challenge yourself. Don’t expect yourself to do 5km the first time – give yourself a chance – and go at a slow, steady pace.

Run/walk
If you haven’t run since primary school, it might be a good idea to go at a run/walk pace. When starting, run for 4 minutes and walk for 1 minute. As you get better, increase your runs and decrease your walks.

Deal with stitches
Even the most experienced runners get stitches, so expect it. If you do get one, simply slow down and breathe deeply.

Listen to your body
Your body may struggle at first but while you do want to challenge yourself, make sure you listen to it if it starts to hurt – you don’t want to end up with an injury after you have just gotten into the swing of it.

There is nothing like going for a run or enjoying a workout when you suddenly hit, the dreaded workout wall.

Thankfully, there are ways to get over it – see what we did there…

Here are five way so to push through the pain:

Visualise
Visualise yourself getting to the finish or doing one more rep. Remember, it’s all in the mind.

Mantra the pain out of it
Get yourself a mantra and use it when you feel start to struggle. A little “I can do it, I can do it!” or “nearly there, nearly there” should help you get to the end of your workout.

Set mini goals
Mini goals are a lot easier to accomplish than big ones. If you are running, say to yourself “I’ll just run to the next lamppost” and when you get to it say, “I’ll try going to the next”. Keep saying this, until you literally can’t run any further.

Go with a friend
If you are constantly hitting a wall at the same time in your workout, try bringing a friend along with your next time. There is nothing as motivating, as working out with a mate.

Listen to music
Try to lose yourself in your music just enough, so you don’t feel the wall hitting.

Remember the high when you get to the finish line – amazing!

Running is a great workout: it’s free, it’s right outside and you can go for as long, or a little, as you want! But, between leaving your home and returning, a number of things will go through your mind.

Before heading out
1. ‘Corrie’s on, I’ll go after’

2. ‘I can’t find my runners, maybe it’s a sign?’

3. ‘Where’s my t-shirt? Seriously, WHERE’S MY T-SHIRT?’

4. ‘Ugh, if I don’t go now, I’ll never go’

5. ‘I’ll do a few stretches and then I’ll go’

6. ‘I’m going, I’m going’

7. ‘Is my hair alright?’

Mid-run
8. ‘I’ll go for at least an hour’

9. (10 minutes later…) ‘maybe 30 minutes will be enough’

10. ‘I’ll go slow and steady’

11. ‘Ugh, am I nearly home yet?’

12. ‘Oh, another runner, better make sure I don’t look like I’m struggling’

13. ‘Breathe, breathe’

14. ‘Cramp, cramp, cramp’

15. ‘Please let the lights go red, please’

16. ‘Can’t. Breathe.’

17. ‘I can’t do this’

18. ‘Seriously need to upload more songs to my iPod’

Reaching home

19. ‘That was amazing’

20. ‘Definitely going again tomorrow’

Many women would kill to have a figure like Lucy Mecklenburgh, even before she got into amazing shape.

The former TOWIE star has revealed that mean online comments on photos of her made her realise that she needed to change: “The photos weren’t awful but there was a saggy bum, cellulite and a few nasty comments underneath … I was like, ‘Actually, these people are right. I’m not doing anything. I’m not looking after my body. I’m lazy.”

Lucy changed her ways and got fit and set up Results with Lucy to inspire others to get in shape too.

The star also revealed that the plastic surgery culture today frightens her: “It is frightening to me just how common plastic surgery is. It’s almost like going to get your nails done. I find it quite upsetting, especially the quick weight-loss surgeries.”

If you are slaving way in the gym, sacrificed all your tasty treats and still aren’t seeing the results you expect, there is definitely something going on. Ask yourself:

Are you doing the same thing over and over again?

Your body can get used to your workout regime if you are doing the same thing over and over again. Make sure you add various workouts and you will quickly notice a change.

Are you pushing yourself enough?

Make sure you are pushing yourself enough. If you can do ten reps of one workout comfortably, add on another ten. Keep pushing yourself until you think you can’t do it and keep going.  Your brain is probably saying no but your body is saying yes. Know your limits but be aware of how far you can push it.

Is your diet right?

Working out for hours in the gym won’t matter if you don’t have a healthy diet. Make sure you watch your portion sizes and calorie intake. Treat yourself every now and again though.

You’re doing everyhting you should be doing; eating healthily, exercising and still you can’t seem to lose those few pounds.

Well, maybe one of these reasons could be why!

1. Stress
Stress can cause you not to lose weight as it causes fat storage and increases appetite. Try to spend 10 minutes each day relaxing and calming through meditation.

2. Eating “healthy”
Sometimes you may think you are eating healthy, but in fact are not. Just because a yoghurt says it is “fat-free”, doesn’t mean there is not sugar in it. Make sure to read your food labels thoroughly.

3. Weekend waste
If you eat healthy Monday through Friday and then binge all weekend on take-away and alcohol, you are wasting all of your week’s work. Try to strike a happy medium or have a “cheat meal” rather than a “chat day”.

4. Skipping breakfast
Breakfast kick-starts your metabolism for the day and you shouldn’t underestimate the power of this when it comes to weight-loss.

5. Just cardio
Only doing cardio may be another reason you have plateued in your weight-loss. Try to mix up and vary your work-outs so that you incorporate fat-burning weight exercises too.

30 minutes of exercise, five days a week can seem like a lot, but what if we could do 60 minutes, maybe twice a week?

According to an article published in Applied Physiology, Nutrition, and Metabolism, frequency doesn’t matter as long as you get 150 minutes of exercise weekly.

Study author Ian Janssen, from the School of Kinesiology and Health Studies at Queen’s University in Canada believes “the total amount, type, and intensity of activity all have a much greater affect on your body than frequency.”

However, before you pick up a one day exercise, six day rest regime, bear in mind it won’t help you reach your goals. It will likely lead to muscle soreness as well because while you are working out less days a week you are going for longer periods of time.

So, stick to your 30 minutes, five days and to be honest, it sounds a lot easier than 150 minutes of intensive workouts one day a week.
