We’re no strangers to ‘trendy’ food these days; with things such as quinoa, kale and farro often featuring in recipes and on blogs as the super foods of our time.

Now, there is a new food trend, but it may not be what you’re expecting…

Vice president of culinary and pastry at New York City’s International Culinary Center, Candy Argondizza predicted to ABC News that cauliflower was going to be 2015’s trendy food, saying: “Cauliflower is a really interesting vegetable because it’s extremely versatile and there’s a deepness to the flavour that’s profound.”

Cauliflower already seems to be making an impact this year, with roasting the vegetable as a main dish becoming very popular as well as using pulsed cauliflower as a pizza crust for those who may be intolerant to gluten.

Many people have also started eating cauliflower 'rice' as an alternative to the grain.

Is it a food trend you will trying?!

As Auld Lang Syne rings out amongst the cheers and clinking of wine glasses at the stroke of midnight, at the very back of our minds will be the thoughts of the diets that we have promised ourselves we would definitely stick to this year.

But sticking to one can be hard and it's not surprising really considering there are some pretty strange ones out there. Very strange ones.

The baby food diet

This diet requires the person to substitute two or three meals a day with a jar of baby food – sounds good, we think not… Obviously, you are going to lose weight on a diet that restricts your calorie intake but we can’t see how this could possibly be healthy. For babies yes, but for adults maybe not…

The raw food diet

You'll certainly be eating more fruit and veg which can only be a good thing, right? But we’d have to spend so much time juicing, blending and chopping our food to make it edible we’ll be rushing for the rasher sandwich before you can say "carrot"…

The blood type diet

The diet is as it says on the tin – you can only eat food for your specific blood type. If you're Type A you should stick with a vegetarian diet, Type O's should stick with a high-protein diet with plenty of meat, and veggies but leave the dairy out while Type B’s need to steer clear of chicken, wheat and peanuts instead opting for eggs, low-fat dairy and veggies. Finally, AB types need to avoid caffeine and alcohol and stick with seafood and dairy. Apart from the impracticality, the worst thing about this diet is having to determine your blood type first.

The five bite diet

This involves you skipping breakfast and only eating five bites of food at lunch time and five bites at dinner time and that’s it. We’re feeling pretty hungry even just thinking about this diet. There is no way you could possibly get the right amount of nutrients doing this.

At the end of the day, the most effective way to maintain a healthy weight is to eat a well-balanced diet, cut down on the alcohol and sugar, and enjoy moderate exercise. Simples.

Like most people, we start daydreaming about our Christmas dinner around mid-November every year; we ponder the variety of potato, we fantasise about our mum’s secret recipe gravy and we imagine that first succulent bite.

Then today rolls around and we can’t bring ourselves to look at the bloody thing.

Every time we walk into the kitchen, we see it resting under some crinkled tinfoil and we know we’re going to have to start making some excuses pronto to avoid eating any more of that giant bird.

If you’re fresh out of excuses at this stage, then feel free to use some of ours. We won’t tell.

1. Dustin the turkey was the shining light of my childhood and while yes, I did indeed indulge yesterday, I can’t possibly betray him again.

So, no thank you, I will decline your kind offer of turkey curry.

2. Did you not SEE that pregnant Thanksgiving turkey video on YouTube?

How can I be sure I’m not eating that momma turkey’s baby? I can’t, so no thanks.

3. No, I’m sorry. It’s against my religion.

Yes, I was indeed a different religion on Christmas Day when I ate it. Thank you for noticing.

4. Turkey is unfortunately my least favourite meat…

…today.

5. I’m sorry I can’t possibly eat turkey without cranberry sauce.

Oh, you have some? I’m sorry, I meant without marmalade.

6. I found that turkey a tiny bit dry the first time around.

I don’t think I can afford to eat any considering the water charges.

7. Oooh more turkey! Do you mind if I eat it in the nip? It tastes better that way.

No? OK, I’ll sit this meal out so.

8. Eating turkey after the 26th is against everything I stand for.

Yes, my moral compass revolves solely around farmyard animals. Deal with it.

9. I’ll only have some if I can put my head in the carcass afterwards like a zombified Monica from Friends.

No? Grand, so. Your loss.

10. I will projectile if I have to look at one more piece of turkey.

But thank you, I’ll just help myself to this block of brie, tin of roses and tub of miniature heroes.

We didn't say they were bulletproof, but they're worth a shot, right?

We all get to a point over Christmas where we cram the final chocolate caramel in our mouths and vow that that will be the last grain of sugar that will ever pass our lips. Ooooh, warm mince pies? Eh, yes please.

Resolving to embrace a healthy, sugar-free diet is as standard a December resolution as resolving to be the best possible person you can be in January, but it’s not a simple task.

It takes dedication and perseverance, but it might be exactly what you and your body are looking for!

If you’re serious about trying a sugar-free diet in the new year, then here are some handy tips to get you started on this life-changing path.

1.  Remember it’s not going to be easy.

Like any big change in your life, it takes some getting used to so don’t expect to embrace the sugar-free life with open arms in your first week!

2. Do NOT go from eating sugar every day to banning it from your life entirely.

This is a recipe for disaster, so be sure to gradually reduce your sugar intake day-by day by no longer taking sugar in your tea or coffee, for example.

3. Do NOT replace sugar with sugar substitutes and sweeteners

You’re only going to have to start weaning yourself off those too, so don’t put yourself through it!

4. Familiarise yourself with labels.

You will be shocked by the sheer amount of sugar in the food we eat, so things that you may have deemed healthy in the past will need to be left on the shelf from now on!

5. Include as much protein in your diet as possible.

The protein you obtain from eggs, fish and nuts is extremely satisfying, so filling up on these will reduce your chances of being hit with a sugar craving.

If you truly want to cut down on your sugar intake or exclude it from your diet completely, it’s important to educate yourself on sugary foods, from fruit to fudge cake, be realistic with your goals and remember that a sugar-free life is possible!

And one more thing; if you slip one day and eat an entire chocolate cake, so what? Tomorrow’s a new day!

While hangovers may be the worst thing ever, it is quite nice having a day dedicated to eating as much greasy, fried, cheesy food as you possibly can.

Here are some favourite hangover foods we love in Ireland:

1. Tayto sandwiches
With real butter ONLY and Brennan's bread…heaven. Or you may be a King's person, which is totally fine too…no judgment.

2. Tea
It may as well be a food group, let's be honest. When we're hungover there is never a cup of tea far from us.

3. Hot chicken roll
Whether you like it plain, with ketchup, or even with cheese and coleslaw, hot chicken rolls will cure any headache.

4. Jambons
On any non-hungover day we will look at these and say to ourselves, 'Who eats those?!' Then we walk in after a big night out and they suddenly look mighty attractive.

5. Koka noodles
Boil the kettle, sprinkle, pour – perfection. #KanyeShrug

6. Big dirty fry
Pudding (both colours), eggs, brown bread, rashers, sausages, hash browns, fried tomatoes and pieces of triangular toast. Thanks mom.

7. Club Orange and/or Lucozade
All of the fizz makes the day less hard.

8. Cheesy beans on toast
It's fascinating how melted cheese can transform beans on toast.

9. Cheese chips
That bright orange cheese sauce poured over chips…yum.

10. 3-in-1
Chips, curry sauce AND rice?! We all remember our first 3-in-1.

Well this adds a whole new meaning to the term ‘junk food’!

A café in Bristol, England has come up with a novel way of serving the masses while ensuring that no food goes to waste – by making their meals from food that is past its sell-by date and has been rescued from supermarket and restaurant bins.

While the idea may not sound so appetising to begin with, the directors and volunteers from Skipchen reveal that they get their food from the skips as soon as they have been thrown away, and they are meticulous when it comes to food safety and hygiene.

Indeed, fans of the latest food sensation can follow the daily journey of their food, with the staff even posting pictures of the food they collect, as well as their menu for the day.

With a “pay-as-you-feel” system operating, Skipchen’s directors have said that they are hoping their innovative approach to dining will highlight the issue of food waste in the UK and beyond.

And it seems that Skipchen is fast-becoming the hip spot to eat your lunch, with Twitter users showing an overwhelming enthusiasm for the idea.

“Can’t wait for my first lunch @Skipchen…Fabulous idea,” writes one user.

Do you think Skipchen’s approach to dining should be adopted by more cafés and restaurants? Would you eat food that has been collected from skips?

1. I’ll go to bed early tonight

2. I’ll start going to the gym every day

You know exercise will make you feel better but this couch is soooo comfy…

3. I’m not gonna get drunk tonight

Well that bottle of gin you bought tells us otherwise…

4. I’m not getting with HIM again

Don't drink the gin then…

5. I’m giving up junk food

Iyxqm

Chocolate doesn't count though, right?

6. I’m staying in this weekend

WHO is going out?! I'm there.

7. Sure I don’t even like him, it’s only a bit of fun.

You think I’m gorgeous, you want to kiss me…

Some people aren’t born with the most varied palette and no matter what they end up trying to eat they will always resort back to the same old same old. You might have had sushi before, but forwhat ever reason you just stick to what you know. Here are things only people with fussy eating habits will understand:

1. Eating salad still just tastes like eating leaves
You have tried to eat healthier and made yourself some salads, no matter what, it still ends up tasting like you’re eating leaves. You put some sauce on it and mix it in with some ham and tomato, but to no avail. You feel like a koala bear trying to eat salad and it just feels unnatural to you.

2. Your eating habits haven’t changed since you were a kid
If anything your eating habits have gotten even worse as you’ve gotten older. You really try to stay healthy and eat your fruit and veg, but you still have the same reaction to eating broccoli as you did when you were a kid.

3. You look up the menu of the place you’re going to eat and realise there is nothing you like
When you’re going to a restaurant you will always have to check the menu to make sure there is something on it you can eat. You don’t do fancy, so you’re screwed if it’s some trendy Moroccan restaurant that only does couscous.

4. You don’t react well when someone tells you to try their food
There is a reason you got a burger and chips, it’s because that’s what you wanted . If you wanted the marinated duck you would have ordered it so stop trying to get me to try your food. You think that putting it in front of my mouth will change my mind, well it won’t so stop it.

19 Struggles Of Being A Picky Eater

5. It’s incredibly hard to order food when you’re sharing with someone
So you and your friend are a bit strapped for cash (what’s new) so you decide to order something then split it. You decide to go for Chinese but all you want is chicken fried rice while they want the Peking duck. You’re not having any of that so you just decide to get a pizza half and half.

6. People think that you don’t like food, but you actually love it
If anything you love it even more because you know what you like and you get such great satisfaction from eating the same thing. Being a fussy eater just means you don’t like certain types of food, and to you, nothing can compare to a good Chinese.

7. When you try something new and you don’t like it, you can’t hide your reaction

19 Struggles Of Being A Picky Eater

8. You would describe your favourite kind of food as American
Yeah, as sad as it may be your favourite type of food is American food, whether it’s burgers, pizza or fries it just suits you. You went on holiday there once and you couldn’t get enough of it. If youcould, you would have it for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

9. You always keep it simple when you’re buying a sandwich
You usually end up just choosing ham and cheese because it’s a lot easier than telling them to  take off everything from a chicken club. People will always give you a strange look when they hear you say no onions, mayonnaise or lettuce, so you just don’t bother.

10. You’re worried that there will be nothing that you will like when you go on holiday
It’s always a big step going abroad because you don’t know how to deal with the local cuisine. You might try one or two things, but anything that doesn’t resemble food you stay away from. You are just happy when you got to a restaurant that has some old fashioned grub.

11. The only dish you know how to make is an omelette
You learned how to make it a while ago and you were really proud of yourself at the time. You haven’t expanded it on it since and you love it because it’s so quick and easy to make.

12. You always give up too easily and end up ordering a takeaway
So you come home and you feel a bit tired and so instead of putting the effort in, you just decide to go with a takeaway instead. You have stacks of takeaway menus around the place and always know how to mix things up.

13. The last time you tried to make a proper meal you nearly burnt the house down
So you watched one cooking show and now you think you can make a roast duck. You did exactly the same as they did, but instead you completely burnt the duck and almost set the house on fire. You’ve learnt your lesson and from now on you just stick to what you know.

14. You force yourself to try something new and it doesn’t work out too well

19 Struggles Of Being A Picky Eater

15. Your parents always give out about what you eat
They were always telling you to eat your vegetables when you were young and now that you’re older they always ask you to try something new. No matter what they say they will never get you to eat something because it always sounds like a chore.

16. When you actually do like something new it’s usually your friend who convinces you
Every now and again you come across something that you like that is a little different. It is nothing too out of the ordinary, you’re still a fussy eater, it’s just you don’t mind having a tikka masala every now and again for a change.

17. You always get really annoyed when you get the wrong toppings on your pizza
A normal person wouldn’t mind it that much and would still eat it anyway, you have to pick off all of the toppings you don’t like so it’s just a normal pizza. It’s even worse when you take a bite without realising that there is mushrooms in it, because you hate mushrooms, all fussy eaters hate mushrooms, that’s an actual rule.

18. You look disgusted at your friend when they eat a three bean salad
You don’t understand how something that looks like that could be in any way appetizing.  They seem to eat it all the time, which makes you even more bewildered.

disgusted animated GIF

19. You don’t understand why anyone would eat something that doesn’t taste good
When you see someone eating tofu or quinoa you don’t really understand. Why would they eat something that doesn’t really have much of a taste. Their argument is always that it’s healthy, but you still can’t quite wrap your head around it.

20. When you have dinner at a friend’s house you just pretend to like the food
So your friend’s parents make dinner for youit’s quiche and you hate it so you just pretend that you like it. If you could, you would give it to the dog, but you know that you will get spotted. You just hope that next time it’s actually something that you like.
