Bloating – fluid building up between cells in your body – can be caused by poor digestion, too much sodium, or your period.

But according to experts, if you pay attention to what you’re eating, you can usually avoid it.

The best way to figure out what’s causing bloating is to write down everything you eat and drink and whether or not you feel discomfort afterwards.

You don’t have to totally avoid bloat-causing foods if you follow a few guidelines.

Eat vegetables cooked instead of raw. Cooking helps break down some of the fibre so your body doesn’t have to work as hard to digest it.

Go easy on bloat-causing starchy beans, including kidney, black beans and chickpeas.

Exercise for at least 30 minutes a day. This helps keep your digestive system functioning smoothly and cuts down on the production of air and fluid.

Eat slowly and chew your food thoroughly.

If you feel bloated, try drinking ginger, peppermint or fennel tea, or taking one of these herbs in supplement form. They help calm your digestive system.

There is something about macaroons that delight us ladies. It might be the colours, the light taste or the delicate appearance. Either way, we can’t get enough!

Macaroons also have a reputation for being very difficult to make. While they are no mugcake, they really aren’t that bad and with some practice, you’ll be a macaroon connoisseur in no time!

Why not impress your girls and make them some macaroons?

What you’ll need:

For the shells

  • 130g icing sugar
  • 115g caster sugar
  • 4 large egg whites
  • 120g ground almonds
  • pinch of salt
  • Food colouring of your choice (be sparing!)

For the filling

  • Butter
  • Icing sugar

What you’ll need to do:

  1. Preheat the oven to 160°C and line a baking tray with parchment paper.
  2. Sieve the icing sugar and almonds into a large bowl.
  3. Using a mixer, whiz the egg whites, caster sugar and salt until the mixture forms stiff peaks.
  4. Add any food colouring you are using.
  5. Slowly and steadily, fold the almond and sugar mixture into the egg whites. This should take a while if you are working slowly enough.
  6. Place the mixture into a pipe and create consistent, small, round shapes onto the baking tray.
  7. Bang the tray once on the counter to settle the macaroons.
  8. Leave the macaroons at room temperature for 15-20mins.
  9. Bake for 15-20mins.
  10. Combine the butter and icing sugar to make the butter-cream and spread it in between each macaroon once they are cooled.

Psychologists at the University of Bourgogne in Dijon, France have released a study that reveals how smelling fruit before making a food choice can help us stick to healthier choices.

The study was conducted in two groups, one sat in a room fragrant with pears while the other sat in an unscented room.

Following this the two groups were presented with a three-course dinner. The smell of the fruit only affected how the dessert choices were made rather than the starter of the main course.

It showed how the room that was exposed to the fruit smell were more likely to make a healthy choice.

While more than half of the group sat in the fragrant room chose the fruity dessert option, three out of four of the other group chose the unhealthier option of a chocolate brownie.

Hmm, maybe that apple at the bottom of your bag may come in handy after all.
