Going out for dinner should always be an enjoyable and fun experience; new foods, great company, nice wine. However, if you are trying to be healthy and change your eating habits it can be difficult to make the right choices.

Of course, if going out for dinner isn’t an everyday thing, by all means go for it; dessert and all! A lot of people have jobs (or social lives!) that require them to eat out quite a bit and so sometimes they need to make healthier choices.

Here we have listed some of the most popular types of restaurants and some healthy choices you can make when eating out.

Indian

  • Swap kormas for tomato-based dishes for a less calorific dish. The spicier the better in terms of metabolism – how hot can you go? Tandoori dishes are great as they are really flavoursome but don’t have a sauce and are the lightest item on the menu in an Indian restaurant.
  • Go for rice OR naan, not both. Skip the poppadoms altogether – they’re oily, not filling and definitely not healthy.

Mexican

  • Have beans in your burrito instead of meat and leave out the rice. Beans are a great source of protein, low in fat and taste amazing. Even better, a lot of Mexican places often have burrito’s in a bowl, meaning less bread, more rice and veg.
  • If you are having meat, go for chicken as it is leaner than beef or pork.

Chicken

  • Fried chicken is becoming popular here but good for you it ain’t. Try see if the place has chicken that isn’t deep-fried; often places will have some chicken dish that is marinated and grilled instead.
  • Skip the chips and go for a side such as salad or corn on the cob instead.

Italian

  • Go for tomato-based dishes rather than cream or cheese based sauces and your tummy will thank you for it.
  • See if you can get a sprinkling of feta on your pizza  rather than lots of melted cheese, which will leave you feeling bloated and sluggish.

Like we said, these swaps are great for people watching what they are eating or have to eat out a lot; always enjoy your meal out and treat yourself, you deserve it!

Soup is great for bulk-making those weekly lunches – just cook ahead of time and store in the fridge or freezer. Healthy and satisfying, this soup is great with brown bread on those cold winter days.

What you need:

  • 2 carrots
  • 1 onion
  • 2 stalks celery
  • 1 leek
  • 1 parsnip
  • fresh parsley
  • 1 tsp vegetable bouillon powder
  • salt and pepper

What you do:

  1. Chop the onion, carrot, parsnip, leek and celery into pieces; you’ll be blending it anyway so it doesn’t need to be perfect.
  2. Heat a tbsp of olive oil in a large saucepan and add all the veg. Cook for about 5 minutes and season well.
  3. Add the tbsp of bouillon powder and cover the veg with boiling water.
  4. Cook over low-medium heat until the veg has softened.
  5. Add the chopped fresh parsley.
  6. Allow to cool and use a hand-blender to blend the soup.
  7. Serve with your favourite brown bread.

This is a really easy recipe to put together. It’s basically hardening melted chocolate, but by adding  a few ingredients you can make it a little more special. Wrap it in a ribbon or put it in a cute box with some coloured paper for the perfect gift.

What you’ll need:

  • 300g good quality dark chocolate
  • 100g almonds
  • coarse sea salt

What you’ll need to do:

  1. Line a flat baking tray with parchment paper and set aside.
  2. Lightly toast the almonds under the grill, keeping a close eye because you don’t want them to burn.
  3. Remove and when cool, coarsely chop the almonds – you want a good mixture of big and small pieces and you can even leave some whole.
  4. In a glass bowl over a saucepan of simmering, water melt the chocolate.
  5. Combine half the chopped almonds with the chocolate.
  6. Pour the mixture evenly over the baking tray and sprinkle the remaining almonds on top.
  7. Leave to harden overnight or for about 2-3hrs.
  8. Sprinkle the coarse sea salt over the chocolate bark, break into pieces and serve.

Lobster, mmm. We’re excited.

The successful restaurant, Rock Lobster, has left its Donnybrook location and is looking for pastures new in the capital’s city centre.

Rock Lobster in Dundrum Town Centre’s Harvey Nichols has experienced great success since its opening in December, which we were very excited about.

Speaking about the move, owner Niall Sabongi says; “We’re very excited about what’s ahead … we know what our customers love, and the success of our association with Harvey Nichols had just reinforced the importance of having the best possible location. Donnybrook has been good to us, but the city is where we want to be now”.

Can’t wait to have this great restaurant on our doorsteps!

We’re not too sure how we feel about this, but we like beer and we love sweets so we’re definitely willing to give it a try.

Sweet company, Jelly Belly, known for their outlandish flavours and wild ideas have gone one step further and created a beer-flavoured jelly bean.

After some deliberation it has been decided that the company would go with a German Hefeweizen-inspired ale flavour. Speaking about the sweet’s development, Ambrose Lee, development manager with Jelly Belly said; “This took a few years to perfect. It was challenging flavour to get right but we think we nailed it”.

The flavour will be officially launched on the 26th January in Cologne, Germany.

Model, student and runner-up of last year’s Great British Bake Off, Ruby Tandoh, has landed a book deal.

Ruby lost the bake-off title to Frances Quinn, but gained attention with her many tears on the show and an attack by chef Raymond Blanc who said she was “so thin” and made him “doubt of her love for great cooking, baking,”.

We all know chefs have a temper but that was a bit unnecessary!

The book, Crumbs, will be published this year by Chatto and Windus. It has been said that there were up to nine publishers fighting to give her the deal.

Judging by her baking skills on GBBO, this is one book we’ll be adding to our kitchen shelves.

Kale is one of the best foods you can eat, it’s higher in iron than beef and contains powerful antioxidants. It’s also no longer a challenge to find kale in Irish supermarkets, as can be the problem with some other superfoods.

These kale chips can be used in place of crisps to give you that crunchy, salty fix you need without casting your healthy regime aside altogether.

What you’ll need:

  • 2 handfuls of kale, washed and dried very well
  • 2 tbsp extra virgin live oil
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt

What you’ll need to do:

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C Line a baking tray with parchment paper.
  2. Wash and dry the kale well, divide it into bite sizes.
  3. Massage the kale with the olive oil, getting it into all the crevices. Put each piece onto the baking tray.
  4. Place the kale in the oven, checking frequently because there is a thin line between crispy and burnt with these bad boys. Overall, it should take approx. 5-7mins.
  5. Sprinkle with the salt and paprika and serve.
