game of thrones

Game of Thrones is fantastic for so many reasons, but for me, it’s all about the empowered female characters.

I can’t think of any other show at this level of success that has demonstrated such a wealth of awesome characters – a whole host of whom happen to be women.

On the surface, it’s easy to dismiss the entire GOT setting as a total man’s world,  but what I love about the show is that all characters are treated in an explicitly equal manner. There is a richness to each person whose journey we follow, no matter how long or short.

It’s exactly that wealth of detail that has had me (along with millions of others) hooked on Thrones for years.

Here are my top four fiercely fabulous GOT women…

Brienne of Tarth
A female knight, the majority of her life that we’ve witnessed on the show has been steely to say the least. She still demonstrates a tender kindness on more than one occasion – one of my personal favourites being a scene in which she gives a decent burial to three hanging corpses that she encounters on her travels. Nice one!

Catelyn Stark
Renowned on the show for her display incredible love and loyalty towards her family, it is always Catelyn's mission to keep the Stark family together. Her character is not without flaw though – her relationship with her husband’s son Jon Snow is rocky, but her loyalty towards Ned is admirable, and unwavering to the end.

Ygritte
Yet another tough nut, always eager to assert herself in an otherwise exclusively male group. Throughout her relationship with Jon Snow she appears to almost be fighting their firey mutual attraction – logical enough, seeing as they’re kind of supposed to be sworn enemies. I think most of us would succumb too, to be fair.

Gilly
Gilly's relationship with Sam is proof that love can blossom even in the darkest of circumstances – it’s probably the most touching of all the pairings that we see in GOT. A seemingly meek, waifish girl, it’s ultimately the desire to protect her child that gives her incredible strength and grit.

Deirdre Foley is a history grad, sceptic, wearer of red lipstick and self-confessed 'beauty maniac'. She is also the co-founder of fabulous Irish beauty blog, Viva Adonis

The Game of Thrones season five premiere aired in the US on Sunday night, and unless you managed to stave off sleep and stay up late to watch the first Sky Atlantic showing in the VERY early hours of Monday morning, you probably tuned into the second showing here last night… with the possible addition of the three extra episodes that leaked online.

Through some superhuman feat of will, we avoided Twitter enough yesterday to prevent seeing any spoilers, and we won't include any big ones here in case you haven't gotten around to watching the premiere just yet.

What we have done instead though, is rounded up some of the very best Twitter reactions to the GOT return – and there were a LOT to choose from, for example…

1. A few words from the most patient husband of all time
"Is he yer man from Love/Hate?"

2. The woman who forgot she was still in the office (not Westeros)
An easy mistake to make…

3. This viewer who summed up our feelings on GOT in 140 characters
Hit the nail on the head.

4. That theme tune… give us two weeks and we'll be fast-forwarding again
But right now it's like sweet sweet nectar to our ears.

5. This smarmy fecker generally being a smarmy fecker
Oh just GO AWAY WOULDJA.

6. This wise fan who chose NOT to watch the leaked eps.
Smart…we wish we'd had the same restraint!

7. This viewer who learnt a lot about womankind last night
#lifelessons indeed.

Belfast fans of Game Of Thrones’ Kit Harington were less than impressed with the actor’s recent words on their hometown.

The actor appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers when he was asked what it was like to live in Belfast, replying: “It’s wonderful … for two or three days.”

Kit has lived in Belfast for the past five years as part of his role as Jon Snow in the hit show. Unlike Kit, much of the rest of the cast travel quite a bit; filming in places such as Malta and Spain.

The host of the show was less than helpful to the situation when Kit told him he had to be careful what he says as not to offend the people of Belfast, Seth rather scathingly replies: “Oh, I wouldn’t worry about the people of Belfast.”

Kit then goes on to talk about Belfast's 'wonderfully depressed tourist board' that counts the 'most bombed hotel in Europe', the doomed Titanic and the 'most depressing TV show in history, Game of Thrones, as it's main attractions.

Ouch, Kit!

Fans of the show from the city have been voicing their opinion on Twitter; with the Deputy Lord Mayor of Belfast even offering Kit and the entire Game Of Thrones cast a tour of the town:

There are so many great TV lovestories out there that warm our heart and make us believe in true love. Then, there are these lot…

Destructive, annoying and just downright disastrous, here are eight of TV's worst couples:

Carrie and Big – Sex and the City
They may have ended up together but Big didn't have a patch on Aiden and treated Carrie so badly most of the time. Not that she was much better, mind.

Rachel and Joey – Friends
Friends rarely got it wrong but this may have been the worst storyline of all time…EVER!

Kris Humphries and Kim Kardashian – Keeping Up with the Kardashians
Anybody could see they weren't meant to be but the lavish wedding went ahead anyway…only to result in Kim filing for divorce 72 days later.

Blair and Dan – Gossip Girl
Now these two were pretty good together, that we cannot deny – but Dan isn't Chuck. End of.

Barney and Robin – How I Met Your Mother
The married couple survived a few years before getting a divorce – because we all know where Robin's heart ultimately lies (albeit controversially!)

Piper and Alex – Orange Is The New Black
Piper and Alex are very complicated and destructive so far. Their relationship is based on lies and betrayal. However, who knows what will come next season…? Could it be true love?

Jamie and Cersei Lannister – Game Of Thrones
No need to explain this one…*shudder*

Nick and Jess – New Girl
We waited and waited and then it finally happened but it just wasn't…right.

Game Of Thrones actress Lena Headey has confirmed that she is expecting her second child. Speculation that Lena was pregnant began when she was photographed with bump last week – something she was unsurprisingly not so happy about.

Confirming her pregnancy to People magazine, Lena said that she hoped she could have her privacy back: “I’m happy to confirm that I’m having my second child this summer. I only hope that this announcement can help me to regain some of the privacy I have recently lost to prying photographers and ask that they please respect my privacy and let me enjoy this time.”

Lena, who plays Cersei Lannister in the hit HBO show, is thought to be dating her former co-star, Pedro Pascal since last year– though this has not been confirmed by either party.

Lena is already a mum to five-year-old Wylie with her ex-husband Peter Loughran. The couple divorced in 2013.

Congratulations to Lena on this wonderful news – we’re sure little Wylie is really excited! We really hope the paparazzi respect her desire to be left alone to enjoy this happy time in her family.

It sounds as if there may be a little baby joining the Game of Thrones crew!

Lena Headey, who plays Cersei Lannister in the hit HBO show, has sparked rumours she may be pregnant after she was spotted with a bump earlier this month and then again this week.

The actress is said to be dating her former Game of Thrones co-star, Pedro Pascal who played Oberyn Martell in the last series of the show – though neither has confirmed the romance.

Lena shared the cute photo below on her Instagram account last April with the caption: "sunshine love", meaning the couple will be celebrating almost a year together – how sweet!

Lena is a mum to five-year-old Wylie with her ex-husband Peter Loghran whom she divorced in December 2013.

Cersei will be hitting our screens again in April when GOT returns and we cannot wait to see what the evilest queen of all has in store for us this season – eek!

Congratulations to the star if this happy news is true!

EastEnders actor Danny Dyer has revealed that hit HBO show Game of Thrones has rejected him, not once or twice but THREE times! Ouch.

While we really admire his resilience, we have to wonder why he keeps putting himself forward! The actor made the revelation on The Jonathon Ross Show, saying: “I’ve been u for it three times, I got three knockbacks.”

According to fellow guest on the chat show and GOT star, Dame Diana Rigg, the problem could lie in his accent as she said to him: “I’ll put in a good word for you as long as you lose the cockney accent.

Harsh words! We’ll have to wait and see if Danny takes her advice!

Danny currently plays the role of the Queen Vic landlord, Mick Carter in the popular soap but it looks as if he might not be staying around for long if he is looking for roles in Game Of Thrones

Just before Christmas, HBO treated us ot a teeny tiny teaser of Game of Thrones' upcoming fifth season.

Now the full trailer has been released, and we can't contain ourselves!

US viewers at an IMAX screening of Season 4's last two episodes were given a special surprise at the end when the Season 5 trailer began playing.

Although HBO has not yet released the trailer via their YouTube channel, we reckon that will happen later today. For now, get watching and prepare to get VERY excited.

There is hugely exciting news for Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner this morning! It has been announced that the talented young star will take on the role of Jean Grey in the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse.

Director Bryan Singer announced the news on Twitter last night, along with revealing that Alex Shipp would take on the role of Storm and Tye Sheridan is to be the new Cyclops: “Meet our new and brilliant young mutants: @Alexshipppp as #Storm @SophieT as #JeanGrey and @TyeSheridan as #Cyclops #XmenApocalypse.”

The role of Jean Grey has been played by Famke Janssen since 2000.

This is no doubt that this is only the beginning for Sophie, who has portrayed Sansa Stark in the hit HBO show since 2011. Obviously over the moon about her new gig, Sophie tweeted shortly after the revelation: "OMG."

We're delighted for her – congratulations Sophie!

E! have been a left somewhat red-faced after they mixed up Game of Thrones actress Sophie Turner with another actress at last night’s Golden Globe Awards.

Sophie, who plays Sansa in the hit HBO show, took to Twitter to address the mix up, hilariously writing: “#TransformationTuesday But alas it’s not a Tuesday. Nor is that me. @eonline I thought we were tight.”

Sophie was confused for a fellow actress named Shelby Steel who has similar auburn coloured hair and fair skin – though we’re not sure we would confuse them!

E! have refrained from commenting on the mix-up yet, but we have to say that Sophie's reaction was pretty epic!

If you're expecting some sneak peeks of next season's Game of Thrones, you're about to be as disappointed as we were…

That said, while the teaser may be short and sweet (ten seconds long) it has reminded us that the next season isn't all that far away…yay!

From the looks of things, it seems that Bran isn't the only Stark child to have unusual powers, eek!

G'wan Arya!
