With a town in Co Cavan still coming to terms with the sudden loss of five of its residents, social media users have taken to Twitter in their droves to draw attention to insensitive reporting on yesterday's tragic case.

The bodies of Alan and Clodagh Hawe, along with their three sons, were discovered at their home yesterday after a relative was unable to gain entry to the house in Oakdene, Barconey.

Commenting on the nature of the tragic discovery, Gardaí revealed that investigators were of the opinion that an individual within the home was responsible for the deaths.

"We believe all the answers are within that house – so therefore the most likely scenario is that one person in that house may have caused the death of the others,” Garda assistant commissioner John O’Driscoll said at a press conference.

After authorities confirmed they weren't looking for anyone else in relation to the deaths of the family of five, members of the public and various media outlets did much to reverse the strides our society has made in relation to mental health.

Reminding the wider public that tragic cases like this must be handled with extreme sensitivity, Twitter users took to the platform to air their views.

Yesterday, the good folk at Met Éireann told us that we'd likely be in for a wet and windy weekend, but we're a hopeful bunch and crossed our fingers that it was just a a passing blip.

And then this morning they issued a status yellow weather warning.

In place up until 6pm today, the warning affects Wexford, Clare, Cork, Kerry, and Waterford and comes after violent winds and heavy, thundery rain rocked the country last night.

Hot on the heels of Met Éireann's forecast, the Republic's police force took to Twitter to offer similar advice.

In words which would be music to our ears on a weekday but are much, much less appealing as we kick off the weekend, an Garda Síochána basically advised us to sit this one out.

"It wet and windy out there. Unless like us you have to get up I'd suggest turning over for another snooze. If you have to go out be safe," they wrote. (sic)

"Will do, wouldn't want to get done for refusing to follow the direction of a Garda," responded one Twitter user.

Further to this, forecasters have urged anyone planning trips to the seaside to exercise caution due to high spring tides, aggressive sea conditions, and strong winds.

And if you need us, we'll be back in bed… the Guards told us.

A warning has now been issued to pet owners in the Cork area, after a family dog was attacked seemingly for no reason while he lay in his own back-garden.

In a heart-wrenching post on an animal charity's Facebook page, images of the injured pet were afterwards posted – prompting an outraged response from hundreds of people.

Shared via ArcAnimal Rescue Cobh – it read: "Word of caution to any dog owners in Cobh – it's a fright to God when you can't even keep your own family dog out in the back garden without him being abused.

"Our family dog who wouldn't hurt a fly has been minding his own business in the back garden when some lowlife poured some sort something over him which has been described by the vet as a sort of chemical.

"The holes in his back are from someone poking him with an iron through the fence.

"So everyone please keep an eye on your dogs and if you see any suspicious activity around a house please report to the Gardai! We are absolutely devastated that someone would do this to our dog."

In response, Peta Ireland has also offered up a €2,000 reward for information that leads to the discovery of the perpetrators of the vicious attack.

"It's imperative that any community faced with a cruel and callous act such as this take measures to find the culprit and bring him or her to justice," Peta's Elisa Allen said.

"Animal abusers are a danger to everyone – they take their issues out on whoever is available to them, human or non-human – and must be caught before they act again."

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Garda Confidential Line on 1800-666-111.

Well, it has been one of the hottest weeks that gloriously unpredictable Ireland has basked in a long time.

And suffice to say that ice-cream sales have been through the roof as countless numbers of us cool down in the heat.

Now, one eagle-eyed observer has taken to Reddit to share a snap that some online commentators have found controversial.

Entitled, 'the gardai just bought an ice-cream for someone in the back of the van,' upon closer inspection, it seems that the image shows members of the Irish Prison Service at work.

With their high-security van open at the rear, it seems that the guards are handing someone incarcerated there an ice-cream.

One of the two visible prison services personnel can also be be seen sporting standard-issue handcuffs on their belt.

There was a mixed response to the post on Reddit, with some users feeling an ice-cream is an inappropriate treat for a prisoner en route to or from a court hearing or jail.

The image was shared yesterday, although there is no suggestion as to what part of Ireland the photo was taken.

A Gardaí investigation is underway after the kidnapping of a mother and daughter in Dublin early this morning.

The pair were picked up at their home in Artane close to 5am by three armed men. They were held hostage for several hours and driven around while tied up in the back of an 09D VW Caddy van.

It's believed the target of the incident was the father of the family, who works for a cash-in-transit firm. He was forced to arrive to work as normal and then to drive his GSLS security van to an area near Dublin Airport to deliver around €200,000 in cash.

He then locked himself in the van while awaiting the arrival of Gardaí. Thankfully all family members were found safe and well, with the mother and daughter rescued from the van in Dunboyne, Co Meath.

Flights at Dublin Airport were delayed this morning as Gardaí surrounded the van.

Gardaí are appealing for information on a small white box type van parked near the Corballis Road Business Park, Dublin Airport between 7am and 8.30am today.

They are also looking for information on any 'suspicious activity' in the Artane Road area of Dublin or the Dunboyne area of Meath this morning.

A man who fell ill on an Aer Lingus flight became “extremely violent” before falling unconscious and dying on board the plane.

The Lisbon-Dublin flight EI 485 had to be diverted to Cork when the dead man, aged 24 and a Brazilian national, bit a fellow passenger who was attempting to restrain him.

A 44-year-old Portuguese woman onboard the same plane has now also been arrested. It is believed that she was travelling with the dead man.

Gardai allegedly found 2kg of a powdered substance in her luggage and she is currently being detained under the Drug Trafficking Act, according to RTE News.

The Irish Mirror reports that the crew yesterday evening broadcast an emergency Pan Pan message three times in quick succession and advised air traffic controllers of an incident on board the Airbus A320-200.

The pilot requested clearance to divert and land at Cork Airport, telling controllers that there was a man “running amok” and that he had “injured one or two passengers”.

It is also understood there was a doctor and two nurses on board who tried to assist the restrained passenger.

In an astonishingly account, John Leonard, who was also on the plane, told Cork's 96fm that the Brazilian man was "on the ground shaking violently".

He went on to explain: "The noise he was making was like something I have never heard before. It's not something you'd hear everyday. It was like deep anguish is the best way I could describe it, very, very troubled.

"Not screaming in a sense, you know if you'd hurt yourself or something, just very guttural, from deep within him."

Mr Leonard furthermore said that it was a "very violent end". He stated: "To die that way in the back of an aeroplane, it's not right. It was not very pleasant at all."

All 168 passengers and six crew members were removed from the plane in Cork while gardai, airport paramedics and an ambulance rushed to the scene.

The passenger who suffered from the bite was also taken to hospital as a precaution.

The Irish Mirror adds that although the dead man wasn't Irish he “may have been studying in the country”.

Describing the incident as a “medical emergency,” Aer Lingus said last night in a statement: “Flight EI 485 Lisbon to Dublin diverted into Cork due to a medical emergency on board.

“There were 168 guests and six crew members on board. The flight landed safely at 17.40 local time.”

With his wife, Nicola, his three young children, Lucy, Alex and Andrew, and a host of dignitaries – including Michael D Higgins and Enda Kenny – in attendance, the funeral of Garda Tony Golden has now taken place.

The service was held at the small St Oliver Plunkett's church in the parish of Blackrock, Co Louth at 12noon.

Prior to the service the funeral cortège, led by Garda Commissioner Nóirín O’Sullivan, had made its way through the locale

Businesses in the area have shut for the day as a mark of respect, with most residents instead lining the town's streets.

Most impactful of all, however, was the sight of 35-year-old Garda Tony's coffin being escorted by thousands of his serving colleagues, many of them in uniform.

The church itself can only accommodate some 300 people, so most stood in the grounds, where big screens broadcasting the funeral have been erected.

Tony was killed on Sunday when he responded to a local 999 call.

He was shot and shortly afterwards died alongside the 24-year-old shooter, Adrian Crevan Mackin, who turned the gun on himself after fatally striking Garda Golden.

The killer's partner and the mother of his two children, Siobhán Phillips, 22, remains in a critical condition in a Dublin hospital after also being shot in the head by Crevan Mackin.

This afternoon, the dead garda was remembered as a role model for the community; his brother, Patrick, also described him as a "big gentle giant".

And in his homily, chief celebrant Fr Pádraig Keenan told the congregation that the killing of Garda Golden was "cold blooded murder". He reminded the mourners that Co Mayo-native was the 88th garda to die in the line of duty.

He continued: "It is 88 members too many. He like all the others is mourned by the entire nation.

Fr Keenan went on to say that too many hearts have been broken, and too many lives shattered. There is no place for violence in our society, violence is wrong, always wrong, he stated.

Symbols brought to altar by heartbroken family members include photographs; a club jersey and hurley from the Stephanites GAA club in his native Ballina, Co Mayo; as well as a TV remote control, a soft drink, a bar of chocolate and packet of crisps to recall his cherished "time out".

Garda Golden will now be laid to rest at St Paul's Cemetery Heynestown.

As further details of the killing emerge this afternoon, a shocked nation continues to mourn the late Garda Tony Golden.

The 35-year-old was gunned down in the line of duty yesterday evening in Co Louth by Adrian Crevan Mackin, a suspected IRA member who had been on bail.

Adrian Crevan Mackin afterwards turned the gun on himself

Crevan Mackin, 24, took his own life after shooting Garda Golden – who was unarmed, in uniform and responding to a 999 call alone at the time of his death.

The killer had also shot his former partner and the mother of his two children, Siobhán Phillips, 21. This afternoon, she remains in a Dublin hospital receiving life-saving treatment for her critical injuries, which include serious head wounds.

Siobhán Phillips, seen with Crevan Mackin, is in a critical condition

The Newry-native gunman was due to appear at the Special Criminal Court in Dublin at the end of this month. Following a joint Garda-PSNI operation to target dissident republicans he had been arrested and charged with IRA membership at the beginning of this year.

Ms Phillips had already reported an earlier incident involving Crevan Mackin to gardaí – and her relatives had also expressed concerns for her safety.

Meanwhile, dozen of tributes to Garda Golden – who had more than a decade of service to his name – have been made over the last 24 hours. The Garda Representative Association described him as "an Irish hero who died putting his life on the line for his community".

Calling it a tragedy, President Michael D Higgins said he wanted to express his "deepest sympathy to the family and friends" of Garda Golden.

Garda Tony Golden is survived by his wife, Nicola, and their children

Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald featured on RTÉ's Morning Ireland today, telling listeners that the "death will be mourned by the entire nation, grateful for the service which he gave to it".

She continued: "Gardaí go out everyday, it takes courage to do their job, going out to face the unknown as they do on a daily basis."

And local Omeath resident Marie McGuinness told herald.ie that the father-of-three “was a gentle giant and an absolute gentleman".

The garda had been based in the now-closed Kill O'The Grange station in south county Dublin, but was deployed to Co Louth some six years ago.

He lived with his young family locally in the town of Blackrock, and originally hailed from Co Mayo.

Garda Golden leaves behind a wife of nine years, Nicola O'Sullivan, as well as two daughters and a son under the age of eight.

His parents Breege and David, who still reside in Ballina, are also said to be heart-broken and shocked by the tragedy, as are his parents-in-law, Tony and Iris.

A member of the gardaí has been shot dead in Co Louth this evening.

The gunman is also dead, while a woman has been taken to hospital in a serious condition with gun-shot wounds.

An Garda Síochána is treating the case as one of murder-suicide.

The dead garda is in his late 30s and is the father of three young children under the age of eight.

RTE reports that he left Omeath Garda Station this evening and called to a house on the Cooley Peninsula near Carlingford to deal with a domestic dispute.

He entered the property and was confronted by a man yielding a handgun. Journal.ie describes the shooter as "a well-known dissident Republican".

The area has been sealed off and the State Pathologist has now been notified.

A garda spokesman said shortly after the shooting: "Several people have been injured after an incident including a member of an Garda Siochana."

The spokesman later confirmed that the on-duty garda had died, along with one other person.

The shooting happened only a few kilometres from the location where Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe, 41, was shot and killed on January 25, 2013.

No one has ever been charged with his killing; he was the first officer to be shot dead in the line of duty since the 1996 death of father-of-five, Jerry McCabe.
