Ah, the gym. It's like Marmite; if you love it you cannot get enough, if you hate it the smell is enough to make you puke.

Notoriously, gyms in January are ten times busier than normal as people's New Year's resolutions kick into gear.

Not all of these gym-goers will make it to February:

1. The pre-work professional
Always in before six in a suit and runners, these people mean business. They hop on the treadmill do a solid two hours and off they go to work for another 34.

Catchphrase: "Can't talk, gotta run – so late for a meeting with my CEO byeeeee"

2. The relaxed yogi
Always barefoot and pleasantly calm, the yogis will make you feel zen even when 'leg guy' is grunting while squatting in the corner.

Catchphrase: "Would you like some nettle and liquorice tea?"

3. Leg guy
Yes, he was always going to be next.  Drinking a protein smoothie while lifting ten of thousands of kg, the natural habitat of leg guy is in front of the mirror.

Catchphrase: "Do you even lift, bra?"

4. The Bridget Jones
This is us to be honest. Not a regular gym-goer but always striving to get fitter.

Catchphrase: "HOW has it only been fifteen minutes since I got here?"

5. The Insta-snapper
Gym-gear? Check. Two-hour intense workout done? Check. Make-up still miraculously perfectly? Check. Mirror? Check. Snap, snap, snap! Inadvertently makes The Bridget Jones never want to come back to the gym.

6. The fit mom
She's had HOW many kids?! Hope I'm like that one day….

Catchphrase: "The gym is my 'me-time'"

Sport England have launched their Girl Can campaign – and it is incredible! Women of all different shapes and sizes take on sport from basketball to dancing and spinning – and nail it, of course!

Featuring slogans like “I jiggle therefore I am”, “hot and not bothered” and “sweating like a pig, feeling like a fox” the video shows the gals killing it to Missy Elliot’s Get Your Freak On.

The aim of the campaign is to encourage women to take up more sport and exercise and to cure the fear of judgment, as Jennie Price of Sport England explained: “We looked very carefully at what women were saying about why they felt sport and exercise was not for them. One of the strongest themes was fear of judgment. Worries about being judged for being the wrong size, not fit enough and not skilled enough came up time and time again. We want to address that.”

We’re not sure about you but that song is definitely going on our workout playlist!

Whether you love the gym or you get most of your exercise lifting a purse crammed with neglected membership cards, chances are you have been to one at least once.

They're pretty much the same the world over and if you've managed to leave a work-out session without experiencing any of the thoughts below, we want to know your secret.

Teach us your ways because the rest of us are struggling here.

1) Will everyone see if I try to un- wedgie myself? Oh, they will. Ah, well.

There’s more where that came from, anyway.

2) I’m sweating so hard in between my boobs right now. Is that good?

Fit boobs! Yeah!

3) Why is that girl wearing make-up? Should I be wearing make-up?

 Yes. No. Yes. No.

4) Where did she get her cute gym outfit? I never get cute gym outfits.

Oh my God, are people laughing at my Magic Mike  T-shirt?

5) Will that giant ball hold my weight? I’m not chancing it.

I’m not being THAT girl.

6) Woah. That’s heavy. I’m putting this down now.

Walk away.

7) I can’t work this machine. Oh my God, I’ll have to get off without doing anything.

Everyone knows my shame.

8)  I seriously need to fart right now.

This is HORRIFYING.

9) Look at your man. What a sap.

I mean seriously, what a SAP.

10) Is it time for the sauna yet? I’ve been here for what…only FIFTEEN MINUTES?!

Clock’s broken. Clock is BROKEN.

Going to the gym just isn't for anyone – some people love it and some loathe it. Exercise is essential for our mental and physical health, we get it.

1. Removal
Must get out of these pajamas and off the couch. We will not be succumb to this relaxation anymore. NO – I’ll go now.

2. Dress Code
What to wear, what to wear. Queue raking through your wardrobe for 20 minutes.

3. Transport
If you have to get the bus there will be less of a chance you will go. If you have a car or are getting a lift it will be slightly easier. The whole way there you’re trying to procrastinate and if there’s anything you can remember you have to do instead – you will do it. No luck so far and you arrive at your destination.

4. Arrival
Get out your gym membership card and off you go. You are starting to feel happy you have made this decision. You get to the changing room and scope out the room. This locker looks good – ah there is something in it. This one – oh it’s taken. That one – ah yes finally. You put a lock on it because no one will be taking your new iPhone. iPod out, water filled, “LET’S DO THIS!”

5. Machine Referral
Good it isn’t too packed. "Oh God is that…it is. oh no no no no." Just hide behind behind the bodybuilders and they won't see you.

9. Staff Encounter
“Excuse me, where is your towel?” “Oh, sorry, I must have left it at home. I completely forgot it”. “Don’t let this happen again it is unhygienic.” Eek!

We all have those good days where we hit the gym and feel great. Then there are days where you would rather eat your shoe than go to that place.

Here are the excuses we tell ourselves on those days:

1. “If I go now it will be really crowded.”
Especially with all of those body builders around taking up all of the space.

2. “I just sneezed two times. I might be getting sick.”
Cough cough, can't go! Now where's my duvet?!

3. “I’ll probably be tired all day if I go to the gym before work.”
We can't have that now can we?

lazy animated GIF

4. “I’m still a little sore from yesterday.”
Does this mean something is changing?

5. “Oh, it’s leg day today…”
Dear God, do NOT skip leg day.

6. ”I haven’t eaten enough food to go workout today.”
This is definitely a valid excuse.

7. “I’m going out tonight so I best relax beforehand and save my energy.”
Sure you'll be burning all those pesky cals on the dancefloor anyway, same thing!

8. “I didn’t sleep well last night.”

9. “I’ll just go in the morning…”

Brooklyn Beckham has stepped out for the first time since news of his cute romance broke – and it looks like he was working up quite a sweat!

Brooklyn was at a SoulCycle class in Santa Monica, California yesterday with his dad David – and by the look of this snap, he is starting to look very like his pops!

The 15-year-old is enjoying a six-week summer break in LA, and is apparently spending a lot of time with his new girlfriend, actress Chloe Moretz, while he’s there.

While Brooklyn was enduring a gruelling hour of indoor cycling with his dad, Chloe, 17, was hard at work signing copies of new book If I Stay at Barnes and Noble in Miami, Florida, on Saturday.

Lets hope the pair make some time to hang out during their busy schedules!

Bressie and Roz Purcell have been together for a while now, so she obviously felt they were close enough so that she could get away with drawing a massive penis on his back and sending him off to the gym.

And of course, being Bressie, he walked around topless in the gym (we NEED to find out which gym this is!). He took to Twitter yesterday to give us some advice:

“Life tip. If your girlfriend draws a tattoo on your back innocently make sure to inspect. Just walked around the gym with a penis tattoo”

Well played, Roz. Well played.

Taylor Swift has been spotted leaving her gym quite often lately and the strange thing is that she always looks immaculate.

Now, we don’t know about you, but when we leave the gym, we are not looking too great.

However, it has been revealed that if we want to look as great as Taylor then we need to give ourselves an hour to primp and preen before strutting our stuff back to the car.

In fairness, if we had a group of photographers waiting for us on the way out we probably wouldn’t leave without letting the redness go down at the very least, so we can’t really blame her.

Makes you glad you’re not famous sometimes, eh?!

The gym is very busy around this time of year, as people attempt to get some last minute abs before they go away for their two week sun holiday. Spending more time in the gym, you can observe certain types of people who share the floor with you, and grow to hate them.

The Grunter
Whether the weights are actually too heavy or they just want to make it look like they’re working ridiculously hard, there is absolutely no need to be grunting like a woman in her 37th hour of labour.

grunting

The Overly Sweaty Guy
People sweat different amounts, and I accept that, but why is it that the sweatier a person is, the less likely they are to wipe down a bench or a machine after they use it?

The Shouter
Self-motivation is really important in the gym, for obvious reasons. But it’s called self-motivation, meaning that it can be done inside your own head. There is absolutely no need to shout at yourself for everyone else to hear when you’re struggling to complete your set, or congratulate yourself once you have finished said exercise.

shouter

The Social Media Addict
I’m totally against any posting of pictures or checking in at the gym, but as long as you do it without disrupting anyone else I suppose it’s not that bad. Doing it while sitting at a machine, however, is not acceptable.

The Naked Changing Room Girl
We’re all for people being comfortable in their own skin, but we don’t want to see naked girls ambling around the changing room.

naked shower guy

The Talker
In the changing room, or out in the reception area, by all means talk to as many strangers as you like. They might not be up for a chat, but it’s far less annoying for them than going up to them during an exercise that they’re probably struggling with enough without having someone trying to become their new best friend.

talking

The ‘Expert’
No one has ever actually seen one of these people do any exercise. Instead, they prowl the gym floor looking  for people who look like they might be struggling and providing some ‘helpful’ advice about how what they’re doing is wrong and what they should do to maximise their workout.

Warning: NEVER follow any advice you get from one of these people.

expert

The Machine Hogger
Much like at a hotel on holiday, this person will put their towel on a machine and then wander off to the water fountain or something, as if they are the only person who wants to use this particular piece of equipment for the next 20 minutes.

towel

The Poser
Mirrors are installed in a gym to allow you to see your form while doing an exercise, to avoid injury and maximise the effectiveness of the exercise. They are not there to tense your muscles or strike poses.

posing

The Inconsiderate Asshole
Why is it so hard to put the free weights you were using back on the shelf where you found them?

asshole

The Beautiful People
It’s not really their fault that they’re distracting everyone of the opposite gender from whatever exercise they’re doing, but productivity just drop significantly when a particularly attractive person is in your eye-line.

distraction

The Inappropriately Dressed Person
I once saw a guy trying to do a workout in jeans and hiking boots. It annoyed me way more than it should have.

wrong clothes

The Show Off
Doing some ridiculously complicated exercise that would be impossible for the average gym-goer just because they’ve practised it for six months straight. They’re also usually in pretty good shape, which is also annoying.

There is no denying Millie Mackintosh’s fabulous figure – and now she has let us in on the secrets behind it!

It’s not all fun and games for this star though and Millie admits that she works hard for her body and eats healthy.

However, her aim isn’t to the lose weight, but to be toned and strong – we love that!

The former Made in Chelsea star told New! magazine: “Generally I work out five times a week. I won’t always work out with a personal trainer, I do classes too. I’ve been doing a mixture of Pilates, spinning and Barrecore … instead of losing weight, it’s about seeing abs.”

Millie went on to describe her healthy regime, admitting that she does have a cheat day (phew!): “It’s about discipline with what you eat because you can work out but if you eat sh** you’re never going to have a defined stomach … I love eggs for breakfast, so I’ll have an omelette or frittata. I love smoked salmon too, and avocado – so I have fats and protein … For lunch I have a chicken salad with vegetables and quinoa then salmon, broccoli and sweet potato for dinner … I still have cheat days at the weekend, I like to cook a roast.”

Millie is known for her love of a healthy lifestyle and is often pictured in the gym, but it’s nice to see she has her cheat days just like the rest of us!

Wow! Vanessa Hudgens is definitely our new gym inspiration after this impressive selfie!

The actress uploaded the selfie to her Instagram account with the caption: “Oh snap hard work paying off #abs #fitnessfreak #healthylife #stayfit #hustlin.”

Vanessa is known to be a big lover of the fitness lifestyle and is often seen attending Reformer Pilates classes.

She has spoken previously about putting on 15 lbs to play the character of Apple in her recent movie, Gimme Shelter. The actress said that following the movie, she worked hard to lose the weight as she “wasn’t comfortable.”

It’s so refreshing to see a celebrity who doesn’t shy away from the hard work they put in to achieve the figure they want – it’s even more motivation for us, ladies!
