Nutritionists might encourage us to think of food only as fuel and to eat only when we need to, but the truth is that many of us have a very different relationship with food.

Whether you're a foodie who Instagrams every bite, or a serial dieter who categorises every piece of food as "good" or "bad," for most of us food is about so much more than sustaining our body – and not all of us have a good relationship with our eating habits.

If you suspect your attitude to food and eating could be affecting your weight, your health or other aspects of your life, it's important to recognise where the issues lie and to know how best to fix them.

Here are a few signs your relationship with food is not all good, and some simple fixes, too.

1. The sign: Your eating is tied to your emotions
Do you find you mindlessly polish off a chocolate bar without noticing when you're stressed at work? Or that all your good diet intentions go out the window when you arrive home wrecked in the evening? Many of us turn to food in times of boredom, tiredness, frustration, anxiety or stress, and end up using it as a crutch for other, larger issues.

How to change it:
Next time you find yourself reaching for something to eat when you know in your heart you're not hungry, ask yourself what else your body might be craving. If you're tired, anxious or stressed, try some deep breathing exercises, yoga, a short walk in the fresh air or a nap if possible. If all else fails, a cup of tea or even some hot water with lemon will give your hands something to do and should take your mind off thoughts of food.

2. The sign: You lie to yourself (or others) about your eating habits
You only opt for a green salad when you're out for lunch, but know you'll spend the evening working your way through everything remotely tasty in the cupboards if there's no one around to see. Once the wrappers are at the bottom of the bin, it's like it never happened, right?

How to change it:
If you feel you're overeating, it's time to face up to what you're consuming every day. Keep a food diary for at least three days, and you should be able to better identify when and why you binge or needlessly snack.

3. The sign: You beat yourself up about food "failures"
You're at home, craving a takeaway pizza. An hour later, you're still craving it, so you give in. The next day it's all you can think about and you feel guilty for letting yourself down. If this sounds like you, it's a sure sign you're in the "food is the enemy" camp.

How to change it:
If you find yourself giving into a craving, accept what is happening, savour the food, and move on. One pizza is not going to ruin things – and we bet it's downright tasty.

4. The sign: The number on the scales has a huge affect on your mood
When you're a few pounds up, you automatically feel depressed and worthless, but when it's a few pounds down everything is rosy again.

How to change it:
Water weight, the time of day you weight yourself, and what you've just eaten, all have a huge affect on your weight at any given time. Avoid the scales and focus on being a healthier, more energised you by exercising and eating well. Health is not a number.

You may have an upset stomach for a number of reasons. Whatever the reason, try these home remedies to help get rid of that sick feeling. You will be surprised how effective they are and how you have most of them in your kitchen cupboard already.

Burnt toast
It may not sound too appealing for everybody, but the char takes in the toxins that are causing you to feel sick.

Ginger
Ginger is a well known cure for upset stomachs and in fact, it is true. It neutralises stomach acid which is causing the sick feeling. It is available in many forms, but we especially love it as a hot drink.

Peppermint
The menthol in peppermint leaves is very helpful for when you are feeling sick. Try sucking on a sweet or making yourself a peppermint tea.

Fresh lemon
The smell of citrus in lemons can calm your stomach. Cut it in half and position it close enough that you can smell it.

Frozen fruit
Sucking on frozen fruit may not sound particularly effective, but it is. The sharp flavour of a lemon or lime can cure your stomach and help you take your mind off it.

Poor Sam Smith has been in a bad way for the past while, but it looks like he could finally be on the mend.

Even though he won't be able to speak for three weeks, he is getting an operation on his vocal cords and is hoping to be back to singing his heart out within eight weeks.

The star took to Instagram to share the news with his followers.

He captioned the photo below: "Bad news. I have my operation booked for next week, so getting really nervous. But by doing this in 8 weeks time I'm gonna be able to sing like never before so it's worth it. I am so sorry to all. Dreading the next month thou, I can't speak for THREE WEEKS after the op. "

Sam recently told his fans that he hadn't been able to speak in three days because he suffered a haemorrhage on his vocal cords, causing him to cancel a number of shows in Australia. He then flew to the US to seek help.

The singer was "very upset" to have to cancel shows but hopefully he will be back to his old self soon.

Us women love it when our eyelashes are looking naturally long and beautiful. Yes, this can be achieved with mascara and fake eyelashes, but if you want your lashes to be clump free and not full of glue, here are some tips to improve your own eyelashes.

1. Remove eye make-up
Sometimes your eyelashes need a break from mascara, you can also damage them by roughly taking off your make-up. Remove make-up carefully and give your lashes a break.

2. Olive Oil
Olive oil is great TLC for your eyelashes, this will help them to grow longer and remain strong.

3. Vaseline
Apply Vaseline regularly to your eyelashes at night to promote growth and make them thick and strong.

4. Trim your eyelashes
Even though it doesn't sound like a good idea, trimming your eyelashes slightly every few months can stimulate the lash follicle and make them grow faster.

5. Balanced diet
Having a balanced diet can be great for the health of your lashes. Most fruits, green vegetables, meat and eggs are just a few of the foods that are good for your eyelashes.

Many people tend to skip breakfast because they can be in a rush in the morning. However, it is a very important meal and you should try your best to make time for it. Here are five reasons why you should never skip breakfast.

1. Focusing
Your body was fasting over night so your brain needs a top up of glucose to focus. This will make it much easier to concentrate.

2. A healthy heart
Breakfast can lower your blood pressure and reduce your risk of getting diabetes. The lower levels of cholesterol mean you are at less of a risk of getting heart disease.

3. Boost your immune system
Breakfast can activate your immune cells and help you fight common colds and flus.

4. Weight
Fasting can increase your body's insulin response, this can increase fat storage and weight gain. It also prevents over-eating and you will not be hungry and picking at unhealthy food throughout the day.

5. Energy
Eating a balance of carbohydrates, fiber and protein in your morning meal can give your energy levels a boost.

As exams are approaching for many people, it is important to try and remain as calm as possible. We know this is easier said than done, but these tips may help. Remember to take care of yourself.

1. Get enough sleep
There is no point trying to learn things at 2am when your brain and body are in shut down mode, get some sleep and start again refreshed.

2. Eat properly
You need the energy to keep you going.

3. Don't compare your abilities with your friends
You all have different ways of absorbing information, so don't let their techniques make you feel bad about your own.

4. Take breaks
Taking the occasional break is important so that you don't become tired and run down.

5. Think positively
Just remember that exams are not the end of the world, so try your best but don't get over stressed. Try to focus on what you currently can do, rather than what you currently can't do.

If you're lucky enough to be a lover of both tea and coffee, you are better off drinking more tea. Here are five reasons why.

1. Tea will keep you going for longer
While both contain caffeine, the coffee high ends quicker meaning that for a day of work it will not last as long as the effects of tea.

2. Tea has more antioxidants
These will help you look and feel great, and tea is full of them.

3. Tea is better for your weight
Green tea can help you to lose weight and the only weight gaining option to add to your tea is sugar. Now let's have a look at that large, double caramel frappuccino with extra cream, shall we…

4. Tea can help to reduce stress
While the reason is unknown, we all know a good old cuppa lifts us slightly in our darkest hours.

5. Tea can be good for your teeth
Tea stains your teeth less than coffee. The tannins can also kill bacteria that cause cavities.

Protein World have caused major controversy with a recent weight loss advert.

The billboard features Australian model, Renee Somerfield, flaunting her toned body in a bikini, next to te words "ARE YOU BEACH BODY READY?".

The ads which are on display around the London Underground have sparked outrage. A change.org petition has been started, social media anger, and the posters are being destroyed. Some people believe that the message is stating that only women who look like Renee are ready for the beach.

"We are a nation of sympathisers for fatties," Protein World tweeted to one user who asked for the adverts to be removed. They then added: "Why make your insecurities our problem?"

Renee has now responded to critics of the ad by saying they are body-shaming her while they blame the campaign of body-shaming.

The model told Huffington Post: "I think nearly every ad campaign you have ever seen is open to interpretation. But saying the ad is body-shaming by body-shaming the image is very contradictory. Two wrongs don’t make a right."

"I am a real person behind the image. I work very hard and live a healthy and active lifestyle which is why Protein World chose me for their campaign. I couldn’t work every day as a full time model by starving myself, dieting or not looking after my body. Nourish your body, be kind to it and it will love you right back, no matter your size," she added.

She went on to say: "I agree that ALL bodies are ‘beach body ready’. Skinny, curvy, muscular, petite, tall, short, young and old. Confidence is beautiful no matter what size you are…. Your reflection doesn’t define your worth."

Many people have praised Renee for her honest and mature response to her critics.

She finished off by stating: "Confidence comes from how you feel. I feel my best and my most confident when I am fit and toned…. I love moving, being strong and always full of energy. I think there is definitely a noticeable difference between ‘skinny-toned’ and ‘skinny-soft’ – you know when a girl works for her body."

We usually tend to feel guilty after spending an evening munching on endless chocolate bars, but now you don't need to. Chocolate does have it's benefits, so here's 5 very good reasons to keep eating it.

1. It relieves stress.
You may have noticed that anyway, but it's also been scientifically proven. The perfect way to end a bad day.

2. Number skills
Apparently the flavonoids in chocolate help people with their number skills. Pretty handy to calculate how many bars you can eat in one day.

3. It's good for your heart
Eating a small amount of chocolate could help reduce the risk of heart disease. We know, we hated the word "small" in that sentence too…

4. It can protect your skin from sunburn
All thanks to those flavonoids again, we love those little guys. People who have more of them are more protected from UV rays.

5. It's good for your bones
Like any dairy product, milk chocolate is a good source of calcium, more so than cocoa-rich dark chocolate.

Clad in a neon pink sports bra, grey sweatpants and a light grey jacket – all from Penneys – Roz Purcell got just about everyone talking this week… or rather, her abs did.

Shooting an Xposé segment featuring the Irish clothing retailer’s new summer workout collection, the former Miss Universe Ireland took to Instagram to give fans a behind-the-scenes glimpse of her look.

The image, which quickly notched up close-to 1,900 likes, was notable for Roz’s particularly toned and taut stomach – something which wasn’t lost on her fans. “Best pic I've ever seen of her #abs,” commented one Instagram user. “Look at this for perfection… jealous doesn't even cover it,” said another. “I hate sit-ups!” joked a third follower.

But speaking exclusively to SHEmazing! today, Roz is typically modest about the image. “I promise, it’s all about clever angles and knowing how to hold yourself,” she laughs. “Every model knows how to do that.”

Shockingly, the 24-year-old also admits that as recently as last year, she struggled with persistent and painful bloating. “Eight months ago I couldn’t eat anything without getting seriously bloated,” she confesses. “It didn’t matter what I ate, the end-result would be a sore, swollen stomach.

She adds: “I went for a load of food intolerance test but they came back clear – which in itself is quite unusual. So I just kept telling myself that it was nothing and that it would gradually go away. But then as the weeks went by it only got worse. There were times I couldn’t sleep at night because of the pain.”

She says eventually it was a neighbour who encouraged her to go to hospital. “I bumped into the doctor that lives in the apartment below me one day and he said he was taken aback at how ill I looked. At first I thought, ‘oh, thanks very much!’ but he said I looked really drained and puffy.”

Roz went to hospital, where it was explained that a parasite was living in her gut. “I was told it was chronic, which means it had been there for at least six months,” she explains. “So I either picked it up in Jordan, where I had been with World Vision six months previously, or in Austria where I had done an Ironman. Part of the swim segment had been in water next to a heavily polluted river, so it could well have been that.”

The Tipperary-native was subsequently treated with antibiotics. “Though that in itself was tough on my stomach,” she says. “My doctor explained that the drug I was taking was basically like chemotherapy for my gut.”

Unsurprisingly, these days she doesn’t take her digestive health for granted: “I make sure I get a pro-biotic in everyday. I don’t overload my stomach with big meals because I prefer eating little and often throughout the day. I’d snack on things like prunes too.”

It’s the diet fad that refuses to go away: juicing. Yes, despite the fact that it’s more-or-less starvation otherwise-sane folk are opting to juice away their lumps and bumps via three-, five-, or even (gulp!) seven-day programmes.

Wheatgrass, kale, spinach, lime, celery, cucumber, beetroot, and carrot are for the more ambitious juicers – novices opt to integrate apple, kiwi, orange, berries, and grapefruits in a bid to make their concoctions more palatable.

Nicole Richie says she's a big fan of juice

Most plans recommend a course of four juices over the course of the day. Water and herbal teas are permitted to keep those (many) hunger pangs at bay, but caffeine, alcohol, and – more importantly – food is out. Still, advocates swear you can shed up to a stone in five days.

Some opt to go it alone, whizzing up ingredients freshly themselves. Others feel they need expert intervention, having the juices delivered to their door at a cost of at least €80.

Kathryn Thomas, Julianne Moore, and Millie Mackintosh are just some of the names who have given juice a go. Nicole Richie is another fan, admitting “I am what you can call a juice fanatic. I always carry around a green juice. They provide lots of energy when I’m running around.”

Gwyneth Paltrow is more cautious, however. Writing for the Telegraph, she commented: "I've done juice cleanses in the past, and in my 20s I did the Master Cleanse, which left me hallucinating after 10 days," adding: "Be aware: a juice detox can crash your metabolism and lead to future weight gain."

Here, we take a cold hard look at the pros and cons of juice diets:

Good: Stick with it and the plans are a great way to kick-start a general healthy-eating plan and crack bad dietary habits. Your stomach will shrink and you’ll subsequently be satisfied on less food.

Bad: Mid-way through day two you’ll be sorely tempted to dive head first into the biscuit tin while simultaneously ringing the chipper for an emergency delivery.

Good: If you don’t regularly integrate fruits and vegetables into your diet, juicing is a great way to make sure you’re hitting your vitamin and mineral targets

Bad: Most Irish people don’t eat enough fibre as it is – and by blending your ingredients into a juice, you’re removing pretty much all the fibre present in the first place.

Good: If you’re panicking because you don’t fit into your wedding dress a week before your Big Day, juicing could well solve that problem for you.

Bad: Unless you’re committed to overhauling your diet long-term, you’ll quickly put back on any weight lost via juicing very quickly.

Gwyneth Paltrow has warned that juicing can lead to weight-gain

Good: Some people claim that once ketosis – where your body begins to break down stored fats – kicks in around day three you’ll no longer be hungry.

Bad: You’ll be miserable for most of the diet. Every tiny morsel of food will seem almost impossibly tempting; every waft of freshly-baked bread or hint of sausages grilling on a barbecue will send you insane.

Good: You’ll free up time ordinarily spent preparing and eating meals, allowing you to read the book you never finished, catch up on much-needed sleep, or watch a box set.

Bad: You’ll become a social recluse. You won’t be able to meet friends for a drink, lunch, brunch or dinner. Being around food while you sip water would probably prove too much, but you won’t have the energy or concentration span to bother anyway.
