Could Kelly Osbourne be the latest celeb to embrace the vegan lifestyle?

The TV presenter uploaded a photo to her Instagram with the caption: “No use crying over spilt milk! Milk is the liquid devil! Humans are the only living species that drink another animals milk!”

Er, that’s great and all Kelly, but weren’t you the face of a Make Mine Milk campaign back in 2012?

We guess she’s changed her mind about cow’s milk since then…

Jennifer Lopez has also recently revealed that she has undertaken the same vegan challenge that Beyoncé and Jay-Z also completed.

It’s safe to say that any woman in the world would love to have Miranda Kerr’s clear and glowing complexion.

The Victoria’s Secret model knows exactly what to do to achieve this – and she’s shared it with us. Yay!

According to Miranda, the secret behind her figure and skin is a simple SALAD! “Every day I eat a big salad with finely chopped spinach and kale, fennel, and macadamia nut oil … fresh lemon squeezed on that with apple cider vinegar. Add feta cheese, olives, cucumber.”

Sounds delicious!

Miranda was speaking at an event for her company KORA Organics where she also praised the company’s rosehip oil with doing wonders for her skin: “I put it on every night. I really believe it makes a big difference to my skin. It’s full of antioxidants and essential fatty acids.”

New research has shown that tummy trouble is costing the Irish economy a whopping €45million every year!

The study, carried out by All-Bran, surveyed 500 women aged between 18 and 60 and found that most women (89%) experience embarrassing stomach complaints, such as bloating or gas, at least once a week.

Sound familiar?

One in five (21%) of those who work admitted to taking at least one day off in the last 12 months as a result.

On top of this, one in five (21%) women who have taken time off for tummy woes worry that it has harmed their prospects of a promotion, pay rise or bonus.

13% of women fear it has negatively impacted their relationship with their boss, while a quarter (26%) admitted to avoiding the work toilet for fear of being shown up by their stomach.

More than half (60%) also said that the problems make them feel unproductive and unable to perform at their best at work.

Outside work, the impact can be just as hard to digest. 15% women have missed out on social events or family occasions due to the state of their stomach whilst almost half (49%) said tummy niggles make them feel self-conscious about showing off their body on holiday.

The research also found that almost one in five (18%) of women skip breakfast at least twice a week, which is one of the main causes of poor digestive health.

In response, All-Bran is launching a new campaign – SOS: Save Our Stomachs – to encourage people to up their daily intake of fibre, which is scientifically proven to improve digestive health.

SOS spokesperson, Dr Ciara Kelly said, “Many women see stomach complaints as a normal part of everyday life – but, for the majority, it doesn’t have to be that way.

“Having a healthy diet which you like, by eating healthy foods that you enjoy is the first step towards better digestive health.  Most of us could see a big improvement just by eating a high-fibre breakfast, like All-Bran, every morning.”

Alessandra Ambrosio has been a Victoria’s Secret Angel for some time now and she knows what it takes to stay in shape.

The model appears on the cover of June’s Self magazine and looks absolutely incredible – but doesn’t keep how she does it a secret. Phew!

Alessandra did admit that prior to the birth of her daughter, Anja, she didn’t work out very much at all, but then that all changed.

“When I started Victoria’s Secret at 21, I never worked out … Then when I got pregnant with my daughter, I gained about 60 pounds and had to walk the Victoria’s Secret show three months later. That was the first time I really had to fight to get my body back into shape.”

The model even shared a few exercise tips: “I’ll do three sets of 25 Supermans … I don’t really do much for my arms: throwing my kids in the air helps already. Plus, as a Brazilian I know the last thing a man is going to look at – even after you feet – is your arms!”

Hmm, we’re not sure we’ll be putting down the dumbbells quite yet!

Feeling a little worse for wear after the weekend? Well then, you might want to give this article a miss!

New research has suggested that even one big boozy night out could cause permanent damage to their health.

Researchers in the US say that even one heavy drinking session can cause bacteria to leak from the gut, causing increased levels of toxins in the blood.

Eek!

The researchers, at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, say these toxins cause the body to produce immune cells involved in fever, inflammation and tissue destruction.

“We found that a single alcohol binge can elicit an immune response, potentially impacting the health of an otherwise healthy individual,” said lead author Gyongyi Szabo. “Our observations suggest that an alcohol binge is more dangerous than previously thought.”

Binge drinking is defined by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) as five or more drinks for men, or four or more drinks for women, in about two hours, depending on body weight.

Some scary post-weekend reading!

Scientists have been baffled for years over why the French have such low rates of heart disease.

It certainly isn’t anything to do with all those yummy pastries and cheeses!

Their love of red wine was considered a likely factor – but a new study claims to have proven this theory wrong.

Past research has suggested that resveratrol – present in red wine – may help prevent heart disease, have anti-inflammatory effects, and even reduce the risk of cancer.

Taking a further look, researchers from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine looked at urine samples from 783 Italians, age 65 and older, who were a part of the Aging in the Chianti Region study.

Researchers tested their urine samples for resveratrol, then followed up with the participants for nine years but found no association between resveratrol levels and cardiovascular disease, cancer, or all-cause mortality.

So does this mean we should ditch the vino?!

Physician nutrition specialist and author of The Calendar Diet, Melina Jampolis, was surprised by the results of the study as she’s not totally convinced red wine isn’t a heart-healthy option.

“Nutrients don’t work in isolation,” she said.  “Heart disease and cancer usually develop over decades, and this study only looked at nine years.”

Jampolis also said that past studies have shown associations between wine consumption and a decreased risk of conditions like prostate cancer, diabetes and metabolic syndrome.

The bottom line?

The nutritionist said that while you shouldn’t overdo it, this study is no reason to stop having a daily glass of wine if you fancy it!

Today is National Time to Talk Day in Ireland.

The Green Ribbon Campaign has set aside today to promote open discussion about mental health and mental health issues.

Many young people today suffer with mental health problems, but they don’t have to suffer alone. Today aims to break the silence that surrounds mental health and mental health issues.

National Time to Talk Day was launched yesterday by former Dublin Rose and broadcaster with 2FM and TG4, Siobhéal Nic Eochaidh, who has experience with mental health problems: “Talking was so important to me when I went through a tough time. It is important that people realise that you don’t have to be an expert to start talking about mental health. All you have to do is let someone know you are there for them and simply listen.”

Workplaces, schools, colleges and homes across Ireland  are being encouraged to start talking about mental health as part of Time to Talk Day.

Here are some tips on how you can start a positive conversation with your friend or parent on mental health:

  1. Ask how you can help – everyone’s experience is different
  2. Just listen – it’s ok not to say anything or not to have the answers
  3. Avoid clichés – “Cheer up”, “Pull yourself together” and “I’m sure it will pass” will not help the conversation
  4. Show support – check in, text, ask how they are doing. Tell the person you are there for them and mean it.

The Green Ribbon Campaign is using the month of May to hold hundreds of local and national events to raise awareness about mental health and to get people talking about it.

Director of See Change, John Saunders, welcomed these campaigns, saying: “It is inspiring to see more than 50 ambassadors coming forward to openly talk about their own experiences of mental health problems as part of the Green Ribbon Campaign. Anyone of us can go through a tough time but the silence around mental health stops people seeking help and can make the experience of being unwell even harder.”

Leg cramps can be pretty painful but do you know what to do when they happen?

There is nothing worse than getting a leg cramp in the middle of the night. Thankfully there are ways to stop it.

What causes them?
Muscle cramps can be caused by a number of things including over exercising, switching from a high heel to a low shoe, when it’s cold outside or when you are dehydrated.

How to relieve them?
The best way to stop a muscle cramp when it is happening, is to stretch and massage the muscle. Try taking a warm bath to relax the pressure or place a heat pad on it. Alternatively, an ice pack can also help. Make sure you don’t put the ice pack directly onto the skin as it could burn it. If it is still there, try walking around or leaning against the wall.

How to prevent them?
Make sure you stay well hydrated and maintain a healthy diet. Stretch everyday and before exercising. Limit the amount of caffeine you consume.

It seems polar bears are not just cute, snow animals, they may hold the key to helping us treat heart disease.

According to Irish scientists, understanding how the bears consist on a diet of fat and little water could help treat the disease caused by a number of factors including high fat diet and high cholesterol.

Dr. Mary O’Connell from UCD says: “If you think about having a diet which is entirely animal fat-based, you’d be pretty sick. Polar bears have mastered the art.”

She added: “They live on mostly ring seals, and eat the blubber. In many cases they only eat the blubber, their entire existence is based around fat. In terms of their body mass, up to 50pc can be fat.”

While their diet doesn’t sound particularly appealing  the “cool thing” about it is the way they metabolize the fat and turn it into water.

Dr. Mary said: “Polar bears don’t drink water. If you think about it, where would they get fresh water anyway? So they don’t drink.”
