Living an environmentally friendly, economically savvy, safe, happy and stress free life isn’t as easy as we’d like. These people however, have designed homes for themselves that make this kind of life, slightly more achievable. Check out five of the smartest homes ever created:

The Recycled Home
When design student, Lynda Elayna Spratley got tired of her long commute to college, she decided to move into a parking garage behind her college. She became one of the first residents of SCADpad, a three-dorm compound built and styled by the students and staff of Savannah College of Art and Design to prove that underused public spaces can recycled, if you will, into homes.

1

The Disaster Proof Home
The Archie family were left pretty much homeless when their house was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. However, with the help of the Make It Right Foundation, they now live in a disaster proof home. With reinforced walls, it can withstand winds of up to 209 km/h, there are hurricane shutters that can be screwed on to protect the doors and windows; and the whole base is bolted to 8 feet of concrete-and-steel stilts, which protect the house from flooding. Pretty impressive!

2

The Tiny Home
When Macy Miller fell into financial trouble during her divorce, and had to sell the house she had shared with her husband, she decided enough was enough, and built a teeny tiny, but perfectly formed little house. For $11,000. Her expenses have halfed, and since her house is built on a trailer, she can easily move if she needs to. Perfect!

3

The Responsive Home
When retired Marine Sergeant John Peck woke up from a coma with no limbs, he had a lot of challenges ahead of him. He wouldn’t be able to open doors, and he couldn’t even reach the presses to get food, let along eat it. To combat some of his issues, Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation designed a home to suit his needs. He can now adjust lighting and height of his kitchen cabinets with the touch of a tablet, and he has a bidet so he can use the toilet by himself.

4

The Mindful Home
Hilda Brunwasser has Parkinson’s disease, but she couldn’t afford home help. So instead she installed Lively, a system of sensors attached to her pillbox, key chain and more that alert her loved ones to irregularities in her schedule. Her son no longer worries as much his mam being home alone, the perfect solution!

So many of the stereotypes of Irish people tend to be exaggerated and untrue. Not these ones however, these are true! All true!

1. We have big families
Well, not every single person but families do tend to be a lot bigger than other parts of the world. Every time you walk down the street with your gran you meet at least five cousins you never knew existed.

Big family

2. We’re very welcoming and friendly people
Not that we’re bias or anything, but we’re pretty sure Irish people are the friendliest ever.

Welcome (2)

3. The Irish swear a lot!
We do, but we do it in a sweet, messing kind of way, you know? Like oh, you cheeky bastard (Translation: Oh you clever lad!)

4. We can’t get enough of those delicious potatoes
Sadly, it’s true. We all have a deep love affair with the potato on a sub-conscious level. Peel it, mash it, boil it, roast it, fry it, EAT it! Potato is the number one vegetable or side dish at every Irish family’s dinner table, even now.

In Love

5. We put off stuff all the time
We tend to have a habit of putting stuff on the back-burner. As goes the famous saying: “Ah, sure it’ll be grand.”

CCC

6. We all love the drink
It’s what we have become known for all over the world! We start drinking at a very young age, and by the time we’re 18 the novelty is gone.

Runkk

7. Irish people have the gift of the gab
We do LOVE “the chats.” If an Irish person can say something in 10 words they’ll usually use 100. If you ask us a story, make sure you have the time to hear it!

Chatting

8. The majority of Irish people think Bono is an eejit
The Irish are proud of many of their own artists and celebrities, like Oscar Wilde, Samuel Beckett, Brendan Behan and Glen Hansard, to name but a few. But Bono, the lead singer from U2 is an absolute dose.

You don’t need to be a yoga practicing, green tea drinking, flowery skirt wearing goddess to practice Feng Shui in your home. Here are some of the basic things you can do to create that safe and inviting atmosphere that Feng Shui promises.

Make the entrance to your home entrancing
If your doorway is covered in cobwebs and the paint is peeling off, this is not Feng Shui friendly. You need to make the entrance to your home as inviting as possible with some plants, wind chimes or a welcoming mat. The entrance is considered the mouth of chi where all of your opportunities come in – so make it pretty.

Arrange your furniture in the empowered position
The empowered position is a place where you can see the entrance to the room, but aren’t directly in line with it. Your bed and desk should always be in this position, as well as any sofas where you might spend time reading or watching TV. Apparently this comes from the idea that you will never feel truly comfortable if you can’t see what’s going on in the room.

Get rid of hazardous furniture
If you keep catching your clothes on the corner of your desk, or bumping into the armchair every time you walk around the corner. Your home needs to feel like a safe place to be, and anything that threatens this security does not abide by Feng Shui.

De-clutter
According to Feng Shui, we are energetically connected to everything we own, so if we have too much stuff, it sucks our energy. Get rid of it!

Fix things that need fixing
You need to look after your home, and mould is a big no no.

Let nature in
It’s important to have nature in your home, as we come from a long line of ancestors who lived out in the wild so according to Feng Shui, we will feel more at home if there’s nature around us.

Create the right amount of activity in each room
Your bedroom is for sleeping, so make it relaxing. Your kitchen, however, is more active, so you can jazz it up a bit. Consider what you use the room for most and decorate accordingly.

Consider your colours
If there are certain colours that make you feel empowered, surround yourself with them. Colours are more important than you think!

So what if all your friends are off having the time of their lives without you? Having a weekend to yourself is actually something to look forward to. A little down time never did anyone any harm, and there are PLENTY of things that need doing in the house….

Organise your bits and pieces
If you’ve got a busy lifestyle and aren’t meticulously tide 24 hours a day, chances are things have gotten a little bit messy. Now is the perfect time to file away your receipts, tidy your wardrobe, change your bed sheets, clean out your make up bag – all those things you always say you’re going to do but never seem to get the chance.

Catch up on your reading
Nothing beats curling up in a pair of clean pyjamas with a good book and a mug of tea. If you find you’re too tired after work to concentrate on a book, a weekend to yourself is the perfect opportunity to give your library card a work out.

Practice your cooking
It can be risky trying a new dish on a week night – you don’t have time for mistakes and probably just want something without too much fuss. At the weekend though you can try your hand at just about anything, and if it doesn’t work out? Well, that’s a lesson learned. Call the Chinese instead. Win, win.

Watch a film by yourself
Contrary to popular belief, watching a film by yourself does not make you a loser. If you don’t like crying in front of people but want to flush out those emotions, it’s the perfect time to watch Marley and Me, or if you’re not really a dog person, The Notebook should do the trick.

Get crafty
Remember that tea cosy you made in primary school? That was pretty good, right? Pick up those knitting needles, sewing kit or set of paints you have hidden at the back of the closet and let the creativity flow! Make personalized creations for home decor or customized gift for any occasion. And don’t forget to add printed labels for that final and unique touch.

Miley Cyrus has been left terrified after an obsessed fan was arrested outside her home.

The Wrecking Ball singer has been granted a temporary restraining order against the man – who thinks Miley is communicating with him through her songs.

An LA judge granted Miley the stay-away order against 24-year-old Devon Meek, after he was arrested by police outside her house, as he tried to get close to the singer.

According to court documents, “Meek, who we are informed and believe suffers from delusions about Ms. Cyrus, believes that the singer/actress/celebrity Ms. Cyrus communicates with him through her songs and is telling him to come to see her so that they may be together.”

The man is currently in a psychiatric hospital but has reportedly said he will keep trying to get to Miley once he is released.

A detective wrote in a statement that Meek told officers they should shoot him in the head if he could not meet the pop star.

You may have thought emptying the bin, keeping the floor clean and the counters clear was enough to keep your home bacteria free – well think again!

Here are some things in the home you should be cleaning but probably aren’t.

1. Hairbrushes/toothbrushes/make-up brushes
Anything that goes in your mouth or on your skin in any way will benefit from regular cleaning.

2. Shopping bags
Your resuable shopping bags should be thrown in the washing machine or wiped out about once a week to get rid of any nasties.

3. The phone
Whether it be your mobile or a landline, you speak into it on a regular bases so wipe it down. Also, those with touch-screens are texting and then pressing the phone to their faces. If that’s not a way to transfer bacteria to your face then we don’t know what is!

4. Shower curtain
To get rid of any mildew throw your shower curtain into the washing machine.

5. Any door or press handle
Everything you touch with your hands could benefit from a clean. Door handles, press handles, oven knobs etc.
