Interior design changes and evolves with each passing decade – but which decades did it worst?

1. Victorian
So grand and vast, the rooms were huge, the colours rich and everything looks like it can’t be touched. Not that it isn’t pretty or impressive, but it’s not very practical these days is it?

2. 1970’s
The mustards, the browny-oranges, the weird shapes that took over everything? No, no and no.

3. Contemporary/2010’s
White and minimal. Where does all our stuff go? Homes look more like hospitals these days!

Nothing is sexier than reading – remember, it was handing over his library that put Beast in Belle’s good books (geddit?).

So why not turn your home into a book haven by cleverly constructing a “book nook” or a reading space.

This can be so easily done by choosing a corner or a window ledge and making it comfortable and cosy with use of blankets, duvets, pillow and even fairy lights.

Spaces like these would be so relaxing and cosy on those cold winter days or lazy summer afternoons. All you need is a coffee and some music to complete a dream day.

Transforming your stairs into book shelves or even just painting classical book names onto your stair crooks can liven up your home and add some personality.

Correct storage and cleaning of your fridge is essential for hygiene. Do you know where your milk is best kept in your fridge? Hint: It’s not on the door.

Top + middle shelves

  • Milk, yoghurt and any other dairy product should be kept on the top shelf and at the back of the fridge as this is where it is coldest. It is also a good idea to store cheeses in a lunchbox.
  • Condiments can be stored on the door of the fridge.
  • Leftovers/cooked meat should be carefully covered and kept on the middle shelf.

Bottom shelf
The bottom shelf is the only shelf that should have any raw meat or fish on it. They should also be covered well; this is too ensure there is no raw meat juices dripping onto any other foodstuffs which can be highly dangerous and very unhygienic.

Fruit and veg drawers
No need to tell you what goes in here surely, it’s in the name! This drawer is for any fruit and veg you have that need to go into the fridge, such as lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, strawberries etc.

Cleaning mirrors and glass can be a pain; streaks, steam and stains can drive you up the wall. These quick and economical cleaning tips are really helpful and will always ensure you can see yourself in your windows and mirrors, what more could you want!

Mirrors

  • The best way to clean mirrors is to use water mixed with washing up liquid and then to wipe it down with kitchen paper. No need to drench it – a little will do. Use more kitchen paper to really bring out that shine and get rid of any streaks.
  • Does it take longer than you have for your mirror to defog after a shower? Use a cloth or kitchen paper and use some shaving foam for a quick fix.

Windows

  • The best way to clean a window is simple, economic and works wonders. Just mix some water with plain old white vinegar, tear up a newspaper and get to work! Soak some of the newspaper in the vinegar mixture and clean all your windows, using extra newspaper to dry and bring up a great shine.

Former star of The Hills and The City, Whitney Port has had an exciting few months, having got engaged to Tim Rosenman, producer of The City, last November.

Whitney let Domaine Home into the loft she shares with her fiancée and reveals that it’s the first time she has ever lived with a boy.

The loft decor is very nature-inspired with plant patterns and soft fabrics. The colours are eclectic and vibrant, with  mustards, navies and intrinsic shapes everywhere.

Whitney’s wardrobe is open-plan, which we love – if you have it, flaunt it! That looks like an amazing collection of clothes, which is no surprise considering Whitney is a clothes designer.

However, having finally finished the decorating, Kourtney is bored already and has decided to put her home on the market.

The decor is very Alice in Wonderland, with vibrant colours and patterns. It’s hard to know if this will make the house easy or hard to sell – only time will tell.

Fresh herbs add a touch of colour and a subtle sweet smell to your kitchen and are also great to have on hand when cooking.

If you’re like us and terrible at keeping green things alive, here are the four easiest herbs to grow.

1. Mint
Mint can grow fast, so it’s best to keep it in a separate pot to the rest of the herbs. A bit of maintenance is required to grow mint; however it does not require too much light, which makes it perfect for an Irish kitchen.

2. Chives
Chives do not need much light to grow and are easy to maintain.

3. Basil
It’s best to grow basil in the summer months as it requires several hours of sunlight to thrive.

4. Parsley
Parsley can be slow to take off, but once it does it won’t need much light or maintenance.

You’ve hit one of the big milestones of your relationship and are now living together. This is where things can sometimes go pear shaped so below are some ways you can create harmony in your home and in your relationship.

1. Give each other room
It’s hard to share your space with someone but sacrifices need to be made, so no, your tanning products do not need to take up one entire shelf.

2. Breathing space
Being around someone 24/7 is not healthy, so be sure to make time for your friends. After all, they’re the ones who will be there if things don’t work out. Maybe plan a girly night out and your partner can have a night in with their friends or vice versa.

3. Take turns doing chores and making dinner
Resentment will grow if these household necessities are not shared. End of.

4. Date night
It’s important to get out of the house and have fun together. It can be too easy to just stay in and watch a movie but it will benefit your relationship more to get out there; maybe the cinema or dinner, or both!

5. Little things
Buy them their favourite biscuits, cook their favourite dinner, leave funny notes, make surprise cups of tea or bring out the rubbish. Never mind the last one – that’s crazy talk.
