ice-cream

Every-so-often, New York City sparks a food craze: last year it was Cronuts – and this year it seems to be an innovative type of ice cream that has fans queuing for hours to get their hands on.

It only opened in July, but 10Below in Manhattan's hip Chinatown already has a cult following – fuelled by Instagram posts featuring its quirky, cold creations.

Popular flavours (there are currently a total of eight on offer) include I Love You A Latte, cold-brew coffee with chocolate chips, Monkey Business, crème anglaise, Nutella and banana, and an Oreo-packed Cookie Monster.

It's ice cream – but with a twist inspired by Thai ice cream rolls.

The frozen concoction is created by pouring liquid homemade ice cream onto a cold plate which has been chilled to minus 10C (hence the name).

The expert 10Below staff then mix in toppings, flatten it out like a crepe, and then scrape it into ice-cold rolls with a putty-knife-like tool.

They sell for €6.25 a pop and the New York Post has already called it the summer's "most Instagrammable dessert".

Taking about four minutes to create, the creators call you over to their cold plate before they begin so you can get a front-row view — understandably leading to countless social media-friendly posts.

Originally founded by Richard Tam, 23, before long his 28-year-old brother, Wilson, and their friend, David Chen, 22, were on board too.

Richard first saw the technique in a Facebook video of a friend’s trip to Thailand, and he jumped at the chance to leave behind accountancy to turn his ice cream-making hobby into a career.

It seems the resulting sweet treats pass the taste-test too: one 23-year-old who tried out 10Below told the New York Post that her Monkey Business was like "having Beyoncé serenade you in ice cream form".

“Every single bite was the perfect blend of Nutella and frozen banana,” she added.

Any chance of 10Below coming to Ireland, so?? In the meantime, you can follow the guys on Instagram here.

Just in time for the end of summer (sorry, someone had to say it), this new take on the ince-cream cone just blew everyone away.

This is called a puffle cone it will have you craving ice cream treats all day long. Apologies for anyone avoiding sugar-based snacks, but this was too good not to share.

It looks like bubble wrap, but it acts like a wafer cone. The absolute geniuses as Cauldron Ice Cream developed this creation for their menu just three weeks ago, and it has made their Instagram account a tastier place ever since.

Without a doubt this is one to add to your food bucket list. One of the shop’s 26-year old partners told Cosmopolitan the cone is based on an egg waffle.

The egg waffle is a popular street snack from Hong Kong, it is made using an egg-based sweet tasting batter.

Another bonus to these tasty confections is that you get to pair them with some of the best ice cream flavours you can imagine. Cauldron does red velvet cake flavour with actual red velvet cake, no impersonations allowed.

Our Red Velvet is always on point. Say NO to Red Velvet paste!! Real Red Velvet cake in your ice cream or nothing! #creamteam

There is also the fact that puffle is just a fun word to say. The humble 99 may be facing some stuff competition with these delicious frozen treats now in existence.

Puffle cones are the kind of food that Instagram users dream about featuring on their accounts.

Ice-cream lovers of Ireland can celebrate tonight as it has been announced the much-loved American chain Baskin-Robbins will be opening shops across the nation.

The specialty ice-cream chain, is owned by the same people as Dunkin Donuts, so you know it’s going to have some incredible flavours for you to choose from. We have our eyes on the 'Hokey Pokey'; white chocolate ice cream with crunchy honeycomb candy pieces and a caramel ribbon.

The brand is seeking to improve their presence in Europe and the Irish Times reports that possible locations include Dublin, Cork, Waterford/Wexford and Belfast. Initially.

Meaning there could be a shop coming to your neighbourhood before you know it! Amazing.

Vice President of international development for the brand Jeremy Vitaro said about the news:

“We feel our value proposition – high-quality ice cream, ice cream cakes and frozen beverages, served in a friendly environment and at a great value – will resonate well with consumers throughout Northern Ireland and The Republic of Ireland.”

Ice-cream cakes? Yes. That is a phrase which certainly resonates with us.

Baskin Robbins are responsible for the creation of more than 1,200 ice cream flavours. We honestly can’t wait to try them all. Every single one.

Founded in 1945 there are now close to 8,000 Baskin Robbins shops in almost 50 different countries. Now Ireland gets to be one of them. Yay!

Ice cream fans rejoice.

Now everyone has the chance to create their own customised Magnum ice cream. Have you ever thought your favourite Magnum flavour would be perfect if only you could have it dipped in gold leaf and edible flowers? Well, now you can.

The Magnum pop-up shop will be officially open in Arnotts Dublin this Thursday until 23 August. So you have plenty of time to experiment with all of the delicious, delicious toppings they have on offer.

The toppings aren’t just the usual hundreds and thousands or syrups either. You can choose from options such as goji berries, crushed popcorn or even chilli flakes.

Judging from the photos, it’s really a luxury ice cream kind of affair. The humble 99 has just gotten a seriously fancy makeover, and we couldn’t be more excited.

The toppings are based on local suppliers so yay for us being able to dip our favourite magnum in chocolate and then coating it with honeycomb pieces.

The luxury Magnums are all about providing us with “indulgent pleasure.” So, no need to hold back on the toppings then.

The pop ups have been appearing all over the world with some foodies really going for it in the luxury ice cream department. In Melbourne ice cream aficionados were topping theirs with blueberries, gold flakes, rose petals and white chocolate. Yum!

The My Magnum Experience has a team of dedicated Magnum Pleasure Makers to ensure all your luxury ice cream needs are met.

We feel like this is going to be a pretty big deal, especially if that elusive heat wave sticks around for a while.

Just as you’re feeling totally prepared for our oncoming heatwave, you remember that while cooling down with your favourite frozen treat sounds delightful; you’re trying to ditch the sugar.

It’s a tough challenge, especially when the weather is beautiful and everyone is sitting outside digging into some long awaited ice-cream cones.

Don’t worry though, there’s a number of just as delicious frozen alternatives that will satisfy your cravings and help you stick to some healthy habits too.

Ben & Jerry’s

No seriously. Not only did these guys save the day for those of us who need a little dairy-free treat, their Greek yoghurt line takes some of the guilt out of your favourite ice cream brand. The range of flavours is also delicious and they come in single serve tubs. Bliss.

Coconut milk ice cream

Ok, so we hadn’t heard much about this one either, but after a little digging we discovered this vegan-friendly option is perfect for those hot days when you just need to treat yourself. It can be a little harder to find in supermarkets but if you’ve got some free time, we found an excellent tutorial for those feeling adventurous.

Nice Cream

Are you even on Instagram though? If you are, and you follow any food blogs at all, you will have seen this bad boy floating around. Foodie hipsters have been championing the “banana plus anything equals bae” line for a while now, but this is actually delicious. We found you an easy guide if you haven’t tried it yet.

Rejoice all poor lactose intolerant souls! Ben & Jerry’s have heard you cries for help and are coming to rescue you. Oh and the same applies to any vegans out there who may be guilty of craving some dairy goodness from time to time.

Following a petition that was signed by over 27,000 people co-founder Jerry Greenfield has said that the company are working on a dairy-free frozen treat. He said that "In the US there are (dairy-free) alternatives from smaller companies but Ben & Jerry’s will be first mainstream company that will do that and will also do it in a really delicious way."

The company got people cheering when they responded to a tweet back in April.

We’re not the only ones that think it’s a pretty big deal, with the man himself saying he thinks it’s a “big thing” for Ben & Jerry’s to be working on the product.

And for anyone who isn’t a fan of bananas, have no fear. Some of the easiest alternatives to frozen dairy goodness are known as banana ‘nice-creams’ by food bloggers worldwide. Unfortunately bananas just aren’t for everyone, but Ben & Jerry’s have you covered. The team are working on coconut and almond milk based alternatives.

The dairy-free ice cream should be available to U.S customers next spring, and just a little later for everyone else.

The wait is sure to be worth it!

Today is Cinco de Mayo – when Mexicans celebrate their national identity with a series of festivities and parties.

And while traditional Mexican fare is usually on the menu to mark the occasion – think spicy shrimp cocktail, tortilla bean soup, and cheesy nachos – we’re definitely a huge fan of HB’s twist on convention: a Mexican-inspired Cornetto taco.

Yup, this taco-shaped crispy waffle shell is filled with creamy vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce, and is topped off with a delicious chocolate and peanut-flecked layer.

Oh and it's in fridges right now, priced at €1.80.

HB said today: “We’re bringing a Mexican twist to the Cornetto range and we reckon people are going to go loco for Cornetto Taco.”

We couldn’t agree more. In fact, we don’t care if it’s raining out – it’s officially May and a HB Cornetto taco sounds almost obscenely delicious. Hola!
