Let's be honest; the world of social media can be a cruel, cruel place.

From cyber bullying to the rise of online trolls, social media platforms play host to a barrage of negative commentary on a daily basis.

Eager to combat this, Instagram's co-founder and CEO, Kevin Systrom, has announced that the company has created tools which the public can use to avoid encountering negativity on their accounts.

"Today, we’re announcing new tools and programs to keep Instagram a safe and positive place for self-expression."

"Since the beginning, we’ve tried to make Instagram a welcoming place for everyone. Our community has grown to 800 million, with 500 million using it every day. It’s more important than ever to strengthen our commitment to safety and kindness," read the organisation's official blog.

According to the the CEO, the platform will be introducing a tool which allows users to block comments from certain people.

Previously, users had the ability to turn off all comments, but the new function allows you to filter comments, and block certain people from having a say on your posts.

"Over time, we’ve launched a number of tools to help you manage the comments experience, and today we’re introducing more," the blog continued.

"Starting today, if your account is public, you’ll see a new way to choose who can comment on your posts — from everyone to just groups of people, like people you follow or your followers.".

"Also, whether your account is public or private, you’ll be able to block other accounts from commenting on your posts. In June, we launched a filter to block certain offensive comments in English, today we are expanding this filter to Arabic, French, German and Portuguese."

" The filter will improve over time, enabling the community’s experience of sharing to improve as well."

We love this.

Nowadays you're as likely to see a group of young women deadlifting serious weights on the gym floor as you would a group of young men, but there's no denying that that hasn't always been the case.

As recently as a decade ago, phrases like 'size zero trend' were commonplace among the press and public as society focussed its attention on the waif-life appearance of high-profile individuals.

Thankfully, the passing of time has seen a change in both the perception and approach to health and wellbeing.

One quick scroll through any social media feed will throw up countless hashtags including #GirlsWhoLift, #StrongNotSkinny and #GirlsWithMuscle – labels which all highlight the popularity of weightlifting among the female population.

And yet despite the focus on fitness, strength and health among many Instagrammers, there exists a narrative that suggests women should not dedicate themselves to a routine based on weightlifting.

And Kelsey Wells isn't having it.

The fitness blogger, who boasts more than 847,000 followers, took to Instagram this week to tackle the negative dialogue which surrounds women who weightlift.

Sharing a photo of herself in three different aspects of her life, the mother-of-one encouraged other female weightlifters to ignore the criticism.

Comments along the lines of "you're looking manly" or "careful you don't want to be bulky" or "weightlifting isn't feminine" never cease to amaze me I choose not to respond to negativity, but I do have something to say about this and I want to say it loud and clear. NOT in response to those who have left negative messages and comments, but instead to ALL MY FELLOW WOMEN who have ever received a similar comment or been told they need to do/be something different to be beautiful or feminine. THE ONLY THING A WOMAN NEEDS TO DO TO BE BEAUTIFUL AND FEMININE IS TO BE HERSELF. We empower ourselves when we are living our truth and doing what we are PASSIONATE about with our WHOLE HEARTS. I was always a girly girl growing up and I love getting dressed up on occasion. What has surprised me though is finding I feel most beautiful when I'm gross and sweaty in the gym when I'm pushing myself in my training, and even more so as I'm wrestling on the floor with my son or any time I'm looking into that little face and teaching him about his world. . There is 100% beauty and femininity in lifting weights. Just as there is in dancing. There is beauty in MOTHERHOOD. There is beauty in marriage. There is beauty in being a homemaker. There is beauty in being single. There is beauty in pursuing a career. There is beauty in education, in learning both inside and outside of school. There is beauty in public speaking. There is beauty in private, sincere conversation. There is beauty in writing and cooking and cleaning and singing and playing sports and playing instruments and anything and everything else you might enjoy, because simply there is SO MUCH BEAUTY in YOU, you just need to choose to see it. And it has nothing to do with what you look like. So free yourself of the opinions of others and the beauty standards of society. Pay attention to the moments in life you FEEL beautiful. What are you doing? DO MORE OF THAT kelseywells.com/app

Day to day along my journey it seemed nothing was different, yet looking back at myself three years later I realize EVERYTHING has changed. Not through drastic breakthroughs, but rather small consistent efforts and a lot of hard work. Yes, physically I am stronger. But the reason I have stuck with it through the years and will never stop is because fitness has helped me FEEL strong. Learning how to nourish my body and consistently exercise and train efficiently has completely changed my body composition. In the same vein, learning how to work hard and push through challenges and embrace self-belief has completely changed my mentality and self-perception. Caring for myself physically empowers me mentally and emotionally. I do what I do, because above all else, I want YOU to know that YOU can empower yourself through fitness too.www.kelseywells.com/app . #transformationtuesday #transformation #beforeandafter #fitnessmotivation #fitnesstransformation #fitmoms #fitspo #fitspiration #sweat #workout #girlswithmuscle #healthyliving #fitmums #fitchick #fitlife #strongwoman #selflove

Finishing her post with a nod to the future of her followers, Kelsey wrote: "So free yourself of the opinions of others and the beauty standards of society. Pay attention to the moments in life you FEEL beautiful. What are you doing? DO MORE OF THAT."

Unsurprisingly, Kelsey's followers have been quick to share their enthusiasm for her post, with one writing: "I feel so motivated how you talk and express feelings for real women."

"I follow you because your strength is a beauty that I hope to have someday! And not just your physical strength but your mental strength as well. LIFT ON SISTA!" added another.

Thanks to the rise of social media and a certain Kardashian clan, female beauty standards have changed somewhat over the past few years.

We've said bye-bye to thigh gaps and hello to voluptuous curves – and while many may see this as a step in the right direction, others suggest the new 'ideal' has simply changed from one unattainable body type to another.

One girl who believes this to be true is 15-year-old, Juliana Delacruz.

The Texas native recently earned the praise of her social media followers after she posted a picture of her petite figure, along with the caption: “just because I’m not ‘thick’ it doesn’t mean that I’m not able to love my body. #selflove”.

According to The Independent, the Instagram post received over 50,000 likes, though Juliana has since her her account.

In an interview with Yahoo LifeStyle, Juliana revealed how she deals with negativity around body image.

“I overcome this negativity by fighting with positivity. The only reason why I post about it because I want other girls who experience this to know that they’re not alone.”

She also has this advice for anyone who is struggling with self-love:  “Not everyone is going to think we’re beautiful. Everybody has their own opinion and we should try our hardest not to let the opinions bring us down.”

“I know that we all have insecurities and it’s something we can’t change but we’re all so different and unique that we should express ourselves the right way and not let what other people say or think define you.”

Cara Delevingne has caused quite the stir with a recent Instagram post, with many fans accusing the star of condoning a “not like other girls” mentality.

On Friday, the model/actress shared a photo of a girl perched on a step surrounded by books, along with the caption “One girl loved reading so much she forgot how to take a selfie.”

The image clearly rubbed some people up the wrong way, as the comment section was immediately flooded with negative feedback from angry users.

Some thought she was suggesting that people who take selfies are somehow less intelligent than people who read often, with one user asking: “Why can't ya be both?”

Following the backlash, Cara revised her caption to say: "Wow! The backlash on this picture is heavy!! I am not trying to say that I am better than anyone. It's a nice reminder to me and to anyone. The power of getting lost in a book."

We can certainly understand where both sides are coming from, as selfies are often wrongly associated with an obsession with vanity and/or a lack of intelligence, and it's a tricky topic to approach without ruffling a few feathers along the way.

When we think of Ireland's top bloggers, we often think of glamorous events, flawless makeup and a penchant for trendy clothes and a bouncy blowdry.

It's not too often that we see influencers open up about their 'flaws' or issues, but Rosie Connolly, winner of the Most Stylish Influencer award at the SHEmazing Awards, is opening up to her community of followers about her struggle with her skin.

Rosie shared a new bare-faced photo of herself to tell her followers to embarce themselves and not allow their percieved flaws to take a toll on their confidence.

A post shared by Rosie Connolly (@rosieconxxx) on

'Laying it all on the table… my skin, unfiltered, no makeup, no products. I've suffered from acne since I was about 18 and have gone through every product, every medication and every remedy you can think of.'

'Some worked, most didn't, but right now nothing is healing it. It's painful, inflamed, irritated and is of course taking its toll on my confidence. Why am I posting it here for the world to see?? Well, I'm 27, happily engaged with a gorgeous little boy, amazing friends and family, living a life I love, but I STILL get so hung up on my skin and allow it to get me down, change my mood and batter my self esteem.'

'So I can only imagine how much harder it would of been for me if I was a teen growing up now with acne.'

'So many flawless pictures all over social media lead you to believe that you're the only one who's suffering or "flawed,"' she said.

A post shared by Rosie Connolly (@rosieconxxx) on

'It shocks me to hear how many people have felt so ashamed of their skin problems, young or old.'

'Do I want to show my skin like this….? Hell no! But does it change me as a person… absolutely not. My skin issues do not define me, they do not make me "ugly", they are nothing to be ashamed of and for that reason, I'm sharing with you all.'

'If it helps just ONE person to accept themselves for who they are, "flaws" and all, then it was worth it,' she finished, showing her support for her followers.

A post shared by Rosie Connolly (@rosieconxxx) on

This isn't the forst time Rosie has shared a candid snap of herself sans makeup.

The blogger previously shared a selfie using the hashtags #EmbraceTourFlaws to encourgae her followers to be comfortable in thier own skin.

Her posts, which pop up on our Insta feeds among the Facetuned visages of others, are a welcome relief from the perfectionist attitude which grips the social media site.

'As a result of acne I have been depressed with low self esteem,' reads one comment.

'It's not easy being authentic in a superficial society. Thank you for this post & for helping us sufferers. It truly helps.'

We have to commend the blogger on her honest post that's sure to help so many of her 149,000 followers.

What comes to mind when you think of Alan Carr?

If it's an earnest expression, a broad smile, and wide-rimmed glasses, you're not alone.

In fact, along with his trademark laugh and filthy sense of humour, Alan's appearance has undoubtedly helped to create his on-stage persona.

So, it's no real surprise that Instagram was left reeling last night when the 41-year-old revealed a very different look.

Long gone is the goofy grin and animated expression, and in its place remains a bearded, brooding and, dare we say it, smouldering Alan.

I think being a hipster suits me

A post shared by Alan Carr (@chattyman) on

Alongside a photo of him staring unsmiling into the camera lens, Alan wrote: "I think being a hipster suits me."

Unfortunately for Alan, not everyone was impressed, with some fans and followers suggesting the comedian revert to his previous clean-shaven look.

"Didn't recognise you ….. please lose the beard," wrote one while another added: "Omg hunny no. Love u, but no." (sic)

"Sh*t didn't recognize you! Although, you could be a stand in for Tom in Castaway 2," joked another.

The verdict might be out on Instagram, but we gotta say, we're liking the new improved Alan.

With 390,000 followers to her name, Jessica Olie has most certainly made a name for herself in the world of social media.

But what happens when your own personal story no longer correlates with the one your followers hold of you?

Jessica, whose Instagram page is a smorgasbord of intricate Yoga poses, sunsets and inspirational quotes, speaks of an enviable, and wholly well-balanced life,  but behind the scenes, the Instagram star has been struggling massively with anxiety.

And this week, Jessica decided to address the issue after hinting at its growing intensity over recent weeks.

Uploading a video of herself performing a series of yoga poses, Jessica wrote: "I always try to keep it as real as I can on here. I'm aware that my posts haven't been "normal" or "uplifting" the last few months."

"They've been quite heavy and emotional. I cannot pretend to be ok or feel inspired because that's not how I feel," she admitted in a post which has been liked more than 100,000 times since yesterday.

I always try to keep it as real as I can on here. I'm aware that my posts haven't been "normal" or "uplifting" the last few months. They've been quite heavy and emotional. I cannot pretend to be ok or feel inspired because that's not how I feel. I've made peace with the fact that maybe not everyone will like this version of me but maybe a few of you can relate to what I'm working through and know that you are not alone. We are not alone. Yesterday I didn't leave my bed until 5pm. I didn't open the curtains or check my emails. I didn't change my clothes. My day was spent trying to breathe through anxiety attacks and quiet my mind that had found itself in a dark place. This is not me but it's a part of me, a side of me that I've had to confront a lot over the last few months since my dad got diagnosed and every day, every hour, every minute is so different. This morning I set my alarm for 5am and forced myself to get out of bed to do the things that I would usually do. So I took my mat and flowed and cried as I watched the sunrise over the city, with the sound of the waves right next to me. I'm not sure I would have gotten out of bed again today if I hadn't made the conscious choice that this is what my mind and my body needed. I'm learning to feel through the moments where I need to stay in bed all day and the moments where I need to pull myself out of it. Today is a better day. – J x | #LETSSTARTYOGA #aloyoga

"I've made peace with the fact that maybe not everyone will like this version of me but maybe a few of you can relate to what I'm working through and know that you are not alone. We are not alone."

Offering her followers an insight into the reality of living with anxiety, Jessica continued: "Yesterday I didn't leave my bed until 5pm. I didn't open the curtains or check my emails. I didn't change my clothes."

"My day was spent trying to breathe through anxiety attacks and quiet my mind that had found itself in a dark place."

Like many people who suffer from anxiety, Jessica was left stunned by its manifestation, saying: "This is not me but it's a part of me, a side of me that I've had to confront a lot over the last few months since my dad got diagnosed and every day, every hour, every minute is so different."

Jessica admits that she has to make a conscious decision to pull herself out of her stupour, explaining: "This morning I set my alarm for 5am and forced myself to get out of bed to do the things that I would usually do."

"So I took my mat and flowed and cried as I watched the sunrise over the city, with the sound of the waves right next to me. I'm not sure I would have gotten out of bed again today if I hadn't made the conscious choice that this is what my mind and my body needed."

Acknowledging the importance of listening to your body, Jessica finished the heartfelt post with the words: "I'm learning to feel through the moments where I need to stay in bed all day and the moments where I need to pull myself out of it. Today is a better day."

Growing up I was never the kind of person to sit and read a book in my spare time and my parents never forced me to either (which I am thankful for). I just figured that I didn't like reading and that was that. In the last few months, at age 24 I've read more books than I ever thought I would, I guess you could say I surprised myself. It wasn't that I didn't like reading I realized, it's actually more to do with the fact that I hadn't found any books that interested me enough which made me WANT to sit down and read until recently. Here are a few of my favorites… ones I'm currently reading/have already read/planning to start reading: – You're a badass – you're a badass at making money – the 5 love languages – The subtle art of not giving a f*** – UnF*** yourself – I thought it was just me (but it isn't) – when things fall apart __________________________________________________ I'd LOVE to know your recommendations for self help/healing/spiritual/guidance books Comment below #LETSSTARTYOGA #aloyoga _____________________________________________________ inspired by @the_southern_yogi | PC: @velimir.stjepanovic | wearing all @aloyoga

Instagram stories officially took over from Snapchat stories in terms of users a few weeks ago, but it seems that the social media giant hasn't quite worked all the bugs out of its systems.

Instagram users have been taking to social media platforms in their droves to complain about one particular issue when it comes to Insta stories.

It seems that users are unable to adjust the volume while watching Instagram story videos.

Instead, when they try to turn the volume up or down, the volume in the app cuts off completely.

Instead, the ringer volume of the phone itself begins to adjust, rather than the volume of the story video.

Peeved story watchers have had to exit out of stories, and ex-out of the app itself and re-enter in order to get the sound to work again on a particular story they were watching.

It is not known yet if the volume vendetta is a glitch or simply something Instagram needs to work on in a future update.

Here's to hoping they sort it out fast, is the angry mobs on Twitter are anything to go by.
