Ireland

So, it's no secret that we Irish like the odd drink or two, but how much alcohol are we actually consuming compared to our European counterparts?

Researchers at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) collaborated with colleagues from more than 40 European countries, and have finally come up with a clear answer.

As part of the  European Social Survey, a large study conducted every two years in around 30 European countries, researchers asked almost 2000 participant's questions based on their health, lifestyle and drinking habits.

Rather unsurprisingly, the Irish were found to drink the most overall, while Portugal and Britain topped the list when it came to binge-drinking.

Terje Andreas Eikemo, professor of sociology at NTNU, explained how these findings will help identify the measures that need to be taken in order to curb alcohol consumption.

"In the past, we could say that drinking alcohol and smoking affect people's health, for example. Now we can go farther back in the causal chain, and identify where measures should be taken."

The study also confirmed a link between social status and excessive alcohol consumption.

"Overall alcohol consumption is highest in the upper social strata, but binge drinking is most common in the lower social strata,'' he explains.

What's more, European men were found to have consumed almost twice as many units of alcohol as women, with women in Israel and Central and Eastern Europe found to drink the least.

European Union leaders have agreed today that Northern Ireland will automatically become part of the EU if a future Border poll shows favour of a united Ireland.

The decision was made at a meeting of EU leaders in Brussels to discuss the implications and effects of Brexit on Ireland which concluded this afternoon.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny said that Ireland’s difficulties in regards to border negotiations were understood by European leaders.

The leaders of the remaining EU states also approved guidelines for how the EU trading bloc will conduct its Brexit negotiations with the United Kingdom.

An Irish firefighter, who was pictured giving a "singed" rabbit water has received huge praise online for the kind deed.

Tom Collins, a firefighter situated in Cork, was pictured online holding a tiny rabbit while feeding it water from a bottle.

Since then, he has received loads of positive feedback, which he says is "hugely unexpected."

"It's hard to explain, I put up a simple post with the picture that my colleague Adrian Collins took, and to get such a positive reaction on Facebook is really humbling," he told Breaking News.

Tom explained that he normally wouldn't come across many wild animals while fire fighting, but this little rabbit actually came up to him.

"We were dealing with the fire when the rabbit actually approached us, he looked a little worse for wear and his fur was singed," Tom said.

"I gave him a wash and a drink of water and he was happy to go off on his own again."

The picture has obviously touched many, with it receiving nearly 1,200 reactions on social media.

We can't help but smile at the kindness of this fireman.

Since its beginning back in 2010, it's safe to say that Tayto Park has been our answer to a theme park in Ireland.

With an actual rollercoaster (yes, we finally have one!), to a deadly little zoo, we have great craic every time we head down to Meath to check it out.

Here, we count down the top 7 things you know that will happen when you go to Tayto Park for the day:

7. Getting lost when trying to find the Tayto factory

One of the best attractions at Tayto Park is getting to see the crisps actually being made.

And it'll feel like you're following the yellow brick road when trying to find the factory… but seeing our fave snacks in production is pretty cool.

6. The Twisted Chip

When you first walk into Tayto Park you see everyone walking around with one of these twisted Tayto crisps.

This turns into a quest to find the Twisted Chip restaurant… and it doesn't disappoint. YUM.

5. Cú Chulainn Coaster

Being Europe’s largest wooden rollercoaster with an inversion, everyone flocks to this the moment they arrive in the park.

That turns into riding it multiple times throughout the day, and it gets better each and every time.

4. The 5D cinema

You don't realise how good this is until you're actually sitting in the cinema.

And with water splashing, wind blowing and your seat moving, it's totally not what you would expect.

3. The zipline

This is certainly one for all ages, but not for the faint-hearted!

Once you're up the top of the climbing wall, you can see the whole of Tayto Park, and then the rush of the zipline ride will blow you away.

2. The Lodge restaurant

After seeing all of the animals and going on all of the attractions, it's fair to say you're just dying for a feed.

And The Lodge gives you a cavery meal option, as well as loads of healthy snacks – what more could you want?

1. The MEERKATS

Right beside the Twisted Chip hut is where the meerkats live and they're possibly the coolest animals ever.

Sit back, enjoy a twisted chip, and watch the meerkats at the end of an action-packed day. Perfection.

With a match against Slovakia scheduled for Monday night, Ireland’s senior women’s football team would normally have spent this week focusing on game tactics and strategies.

However, preparations came to a halt on Wednesday as the ladies entered into talks with the FAI.

Earlier this week, the squad held a press conference where they highlighted numerous issues and a general lack of professionalism in the national program.

Proper training gear, gym membership and qualification bonuses were just some of the concerns the team wanted to address and it now seems the ladies have managed to strike a deal after nine hours of talks.

16 players, three PFAI representatives, two SIPTU officials, and PFAI General Secretary, Stephen McGuinness, consulted with the representatives from the FAI via a mediator in a Dublin hotel on Wednesday night.

The lengthy talks proved successful for the squad with a financial package, estimated to be in the region of €100,000, agreed upon.

According to The Irish Examiner, the payment of a €300 match fee, additional win and draw bonuses, compensation for loss of earnings and appropriate tracksuits were among the some of the issues addressed in the comprehensive deal.

In a statement, SIPTU’s Ethel Buckley, hailed the victory as a “landmark agreement [which] was only possible due to the organisation, bravery and commitment of the national team players.’’

She also spoke about what the result meant for gender inequalities in Ireland: “I think this dispute is bigger than football… I think it touched something in the country, even among people who have no interest in football, because it spoke so much to gender relations in the country right now.''

''And it was striking that it was out of football, something which has traditionally been seen as quite a male bastion, that this push came for women’s rights generally.”

Ireland's ladies were back in business last night, and preparations are in full swing for their clash with Slovakia on Monday.

There has been a lot of controversy surrounding the Ireland’s women’s international football team and the FAI recently.

Earlier this week, team members called a press conference in order to voice their concerns regarding the lack of professionalism within the national team program.

Players revealed that they had to change in public bathrooms before matches and claimed they often have to share tracksuits with the youth national team members.

The team suggested that they may refuse to take part in their friendly against Slovakia on Monday if the situation doesn’t improve, and it seems that today the girls will not attend training ahead of that match.

Ollie Cahill, PFAI Ireland Player Executive, said: "At a team meeting the members of the Women's National Team decided that they are unfortunately unable to attend today's training camp.

He added "The players have not taken this decision lightly. The players wish to make clear that they simply want the FAI to respect their right to choose their own representatives and have all the outstanding issues which are affecting their ability to achieve their maximum potential for their country resolved in a swift, amicable and professional manner."

The team and their PFA Ireland and SIPTU representatives will attend a meeting this evening to discuss the issues.

It looks like Celebrity Big Brother might be coming to Ireland.

Coco Television, who are behind some of our favourite shows such as Irish First Dates, Don't Tell The Bride and Room To Improve, have apparently claimed the rights to the reality show.

A source told the Irish Sun: "Big Brother has never been done in Ireland but Irish broadcasters are now so risk averse to new programme ideas, it's a safe show and could provide content for all three TV3 channels."

TV3 will reportedly secure the rights from Coco Television, so they can air the first ever Irish version of the show, to compete with RTÉ's Dancing With The Stars.

We can only image what this would be like!
