The whistle wasn’t blown for summer’s official start as a child until your mam unearthed the paddling pool from the shed, and set about covering last year’s holes with masking tape and plasters.

And while sitting in a semi-deflated rubber contraption in front of our neighbours doesn’t exactly entice right now, there is a lot to be said for being able to cool down after spending time with clammy commuters during the current heatwave.

If you’re a step away from doing the Ice Bucket Challenge without a nomination, then it’s high-time you check out the waterparks and swimming pools in your locality.

And we've taken a look at our top five!

1. Leisureland, Co Galway

With three swimming pools to choose from, swimmers of all levels will be guaranteed a good time at one of Ireland’s most famous water and fitness centres.

From lane-swimming to water slides, there’s a reason we spent our childhoods begging for a weekend in Salthill.

2. Funtasia Waterpark, Drogheda

Located just two minutes from the M1 motorway, Funtasia Waterpark is super easy to reach for Dubliners in need of a cool-down during the heatwave.

And if slides and water activities are your thing, then a day spent at Funtasia is exactly what you’re after.

3. National Aquatic Centre

While a host for international, national and provincial competitions, the NAC is also open to casual swimmers in dire need of a splash.

The AquaZone is considered one of the most technically innovative water parks in Europe and boasts a whole host of attractions including the Wave Pool, Lazy River and Flow Rider.

4. Splashworld, Tramore

Whether it’s a wave machine or water park you’re after, this leisure centre has it.

Located in the sunny south-east, Splashworld is heaven for anyone who’s mad for a dip but has no intention of venturing into the sea.

5. Benone Complex & Strand

If an outdoor heated plash pool sounds like heaven right now, you may want to earmark a weekend in Co Derry.

The Benone Complex & Strand in Limavaddy is just a stone's throw from one of Ireland's longest beaches, and is the place to go if glamping and swimming is your thing.

It is finally time to break out the short shorts as the hottest day of the year so far is scheduled in for next week.

According to the Irish Mirror, temperatures are set to hit 27 degrees in parts of Ireland this coming Tuesday making it the best day of the year to date.

Temperatures will range from 23 to 27 degrees around the country, with the best places to catch some rays being inland counties like Laois and Offaly.

And just to make sure we finally get some Vitamin D, Met Eireann has predicted that the weather for the whole of next week should be good with Monday ranging from 21 to 26 degrees, Tuesday being a scorcher and the rest of the week being a comfortable 20 degrees.

Monica Geller Courteney Cox is in Ireland!

The actress has touched down on our fair green isle with her partner Johnny McDaid as she joins Bear Grylls in the wilderness.

Court shared a picture with her man which saw them standing on a balcony with the sea in the background.

She captioned the post: "In Ireland as my love @johnnymcdaid sends me off into the wilderness for the @beargrylls show. It's already raining!"

(Try living here 24/7 Courteney!)

The Friends star and Johnny were meant to marry in Ireland last year, but called off their wedding only weeks beforehand.

Hopefully she'll fall back in love with our country as she travels it with Bear!

The results of last week's gin and tonic festival are in and it turns out the best place in Ireland to enjoy your G&T is Davy Mac's bar in Waterford City.

Over 100 venues took part in Great Irish Beverages' nationwide search for the best gin and tonic which required each bar to design their own signature drink.

Davy Mac’s – which opened last Christmas – won the public vote with their Drumshanbo Gunpowder Gin and Elderflower Fever Tree Tonic.  Wow!

The bar's gin of choice, Drumshanbo, is distilled by hand at The Shed Distillery in County Leitrim.

Not only is Drumshanbo Connaught's first gin, it's also only been on the market for eight weeks.

Since Davy Mac's serves 60 types of gin and is now officially the best place for a G&T in Ireland we think we could be tempted to Waterford.

Us Irish are well known for our questionable drinking habits, but the results of a new study by the Health Research Board are truly shocking.

According to the research, the average Irish drinker consumes 11 litres of pure alcohol per year.

That in itself mightn’t mean much, but when you convert it into pints of beer and bottles of wine things get really scary.

11 litres of alcohol equals 445 pints of beer, 29 litres of vodka or 116 bottles of wine per person per year.

And the bad news doesn’t end there.

The report also found that alcohol-related discharges from hospital cost Irish taxpayers €1.5 billion in 2012 – that’s more than 10% of the total amount spent on public healthcare that year.

The study stressed that it's not just what we drink that's the issue, but how we drink it as binge-drinking is still massive problem in Irish society.

It was the video seen by millions – not just in Ireland, but around the world too.

Yes, in a Euro championships marred by thuggery, Ireland supporters have been winning over their own fans – and making a few local ladies blush at the same time.

Meet Carla Romera: a stunning young Bordeaux woman who works as a lifeguard and loves the beach and bikinis.

She was the centre – quite literally – of attention when Ireland were beaten 0-3 by Belgium in her home city at the weekend, being playfully ambushed by dozens of boys in green.

Le top ces irlandais Ils aiment bien les françaises je crois #delire#euro2016#irish#france#bordeaux#france

A video posted by ~ CARLA ROMÉRA ~ (@carla_rm_) on

Posting her own video of her amazing experience to her Instagram account, Carla showed her appreciation for the 'top' Irish, whom she reckoned 'liked the French'.

In it she can be seen surrounded by 'les verts' – who treated her to a rendition of Can't Take My Eyes Off You, and latterly, Hey Baby.

In conversation with Mail Online, she also revealed: "I want to say that I am very proud of the Irish, it was a magical time filled with kindness and joy."

In her own video, one lucky Irishman can also be seen smiling in Ms Romera's direction – his charm eventually seeing him steal a cheeky kiss by the end of the crowd's rendition.

Now all that's left to find is that young gentleman – who has amassed his own following of female supporters following the video's release.

Although several requests as to his identity have been made online, as of yet he remains nameless.

We know, we know. We lost against Belgium and it has us a little down, but this video that has surfaced on Twitter has really warmed our hearts.

In the vid, posted soon after the whistle blew in Bordeaux, a young Irish fan in a wheelchair is being led around by a group of Belgium supporters.

They're chanting behind her as she waves and smiles to the crowd of people passing her.

With so much fighting going on between football supporters over in France at the moment, it's nice to see that we can all have a good time together, no matter what country we're from.

We LOST. 🙁

In the UEFA Euros 2016, Ireland played against Belgium, with kick off starting at 2pm.

The first half of the match was super frustrating for Ireland, with no score by the end of it.

At the start of the second half Belgium scored in two minutes of throw in, and then proceeded to score an additional two goals after that.

The score was Belgium 3 – 0 Ireland at full-time.

We're all really disappointed, but are eager to see the come out of our next match against Italy.

Niall Horan is taking a break from his work today to go out and support the boys in green.

The Mullingar man is feeling very patriotic donning an Ireland Jersey and I'm sure like the rest of us, he's eager to see how today's match ends.

The team are playing against Belgium, and at the moment neither teams have scored.

The One Direction star took to Instagram to show off his new Ireland jersey.

He captioned the pic: “Here we go. Cmon Ireland.

“Off to the pub to watch the boys in green. Wearing it with serious amounts of pride today.”

YES Niall! COYBIG!

The nation is going to have a brilliant view of  thePlanet Mars tonight!

Mars comes close enough for us to see every two years, however, something even greater is that tonight it will be the closest it's ever been in a decade.

Many people will flock to their local park or back garden to see the planet, as it's visible to the naked eye.

But, if you really want to make a night out of it, Astronomy Ireland is inviting people to its Dublin headquarters to see Mars through its huge telescopes.

Chairman of Astronomy Ireland, David Moore said: “Be it decades or centuries into the future, the future of mankind is in space.

“I mean some of the kids looking through telescopes, there is a good chance some of them will end up living or working on Mars.”

We absolutely love the Irish fans over in France at the moment.

They're just going about their days singing, dancing, and catching up with ex-Boyzone singers.

Yep, in the latest video of the Irish at the Euros 2016, Keith Duffy is in the middle of a huge group of fans and he's having the time of his life.

Spotted on Joe.ie, he starts singing No Matter What, and it's like no version you've ever heard before.

We love it. Gwan' the Irish!

Kate Middleton and Prince William touched down in Northern Ireland yesterday.

The couple were there to attend the Northern Ireland annual Garden Party in Hillsborough Castle.

Kate looked as lovely as ever as she mingled with the guests, wearing a cream coat and matching hat.

Kate also started off the party by planting a tree in the middle of the castle's estate.

The day seemed to be a success as Kate and William were snapped having fun in the Irish sunshine.
