The HSE has issued a warning in Ireland against Lyme disease.

Lyme disease is mainly spread by ticks and people who engage in outdoor activities are likely to be more at risk of being in contact with the disease-carrying ticks.

The HSE said that those who work in forest or grassy areas should be extra aware of tick bites by using insect repellent, wearing long clothing and checking for ticks after a day outside.

In a small number of cases, Lyme disease can cause severe debilitating heart and nervous system issues.

"Ticks are tiny spider like creatures that feed on the blood of mammals and birds and will also feed on the blood of humans and occasionally dogs," said Dr. Paul McKeown, HPSC Specialist in Public Health Medicine.

"Ticks are more numerous and more active in the summer months and protecting against tick bites protects against Lyme disease. The most effective way to prevent Lyme disease is by preventing tick bites."

First Dates Ireland aired its second show on RTÉ2 last night, and we just can't get enough of the Irish humour.

As much as we love the UK version, the Irish show seems to come up with absolute gems.

From Gemma who ended up on a SECOND date with Mark (who didn't seem to remember her), to Kias who wore no socks and asked how long will it take Ciara to sleep with him (erm), it was definitely one to remember.

Here are the Twitterverse's best reactions to the antics in The Gibson Hotel last night:

Macklemore is currently travelling around Ireland with his wife and daughter, and something very special happened on our fair green isle.

Mack's wife, Tricia, took to Instagram to share a video of their daughter taking her first steps in Belfast.

The parents are so uncontrollably happy that when she finishes they leap into each others arms. IT'S SO CUTE.

“Yesterday in Belfast, Northern Ireland…. Sloane’s first steps. Watch me try to help and then she gets up on her own!” Tricia captioned the clip.

The family seem to be having a great time travelling across the Emerald Isle, and some of his Instagram photos are just hilarious. Here's to more happy memories!

Top Gear hosts Chris Evans and Matt Le Blanc are coming to Ireland this weekend to film a part of the new series in Kerry.

Speaking on BBC Radio 2 this morning, Chris said: Mr Le Blanc and I are going to Ireland on Friday to make a Top Gear film – actually a couple of Top Gear films that will be combined.

"We're thinking of going to the Dingle area."

Matt then began to mention all of the lovely pubs and restaurants on our fair green isle, but Chris shut him down, saying they need to stick to a schedule.

"We haven't got time for any of that. Technically we'll be working obviously, but we'll try and eke out some time."

The new series is set to air next month, yet the latest reports suggest all is not well between the two hosts.

Irish Little Mix fans, we hope you've been keeping your eyes peeled over the last 24 hours, as the glam foursome have officially touched down in Dublin for the first of two shows at the 3Arena.

While Jesy and Jade seem to have been staying under the radar. Perrie and Leigh-Anne took some time out yesterday and today to enjoy Ireland's capital, starting off with a nice cuppa.

When in Rome and all that…

Of course, if you follow Perrie on Snapchat, you may have spotted her checking out some other Irish delicacies.

Like a brown bread ice-cream cone:

Or, for dinner, a big dirty plate of Chinese – maybe she was hungover?

The singer also hit Temple Bar, which for once looked pretty quiet:

And she even stopped to enjoy a few tunes from some buskers – in the form of Irish band Keywest.

Before hitting the hay, the singer tucked in to some cookies and milk courtesy of her hotel.

Not the worst way to end a day of sight-seeing.

There have been no updates from the girls today as yet, but with their gig kicking off in mere hours, fans won't have long to wait to see them in the flesh.

Absolutely amazing events were held all over the country last weekend to celebrate Ireland's 100 years of freedom, but nothing pulled on the republic's heartstrings more than RTÉ's Centenary show.

Held in the Bord Gáis Theatre, some of Ireland's greatest talents all joined together to mark the occasion of the 1916 Rising.

Imelda May, Gavin James, The High Kings, Danny O Reilly, Roisin O, Seo Linn and Sharon Shannon were just some of the people involved on the night, and the Irish couldn't help but take to Twitter to share how proud they were of our green isle:

If you missed it, the whole show is live on RTÉ Player. Believe us, you won't be disappointed.

Unless you've been incredibly disciplined with that Lenten "no chocolate" promise, you've no doubt already tucked into your first Easter egg of the year.

But did you know just how many eggs us Irish folk will consume in total this Easter? We'll give you a hint: it's a lot.

Repak Recycling have tallied up some interesting figures based on Ireland's chocolate-eating habits, and the results will give you a bit of a shock.

But if you can't binge-eat chocolate on Easter Sunday, when can you really? Behold, Ireland's Easter weekend in numbers…

17,700,000 – The number of Easter eggs we'll munch our way though in Ireland this year

2,136 – The amount of chocolate, in tonnes, we'll end up eating

4,200,000 – The number of marathons ONE runner could run on the calories contained in those eggs

€38,500,000 – The amount we'll spend on Easter eggs this year

shut up and take my money glee fangirl

8 – The amount of eggs eaten on average in each Irish household

19,650 – The level of packaging, in tonnes, we'll generate this Easter

161 – The number of Boeing 747-800 aircrafts we could fill with all that cardboard, plastic and foil

Repak Recycling are encouraging chocolate lovers to #BeAGoodEgg this Easter and recycle their packaging. You can locate your nearest recycling facility at Repak.ie – especially useful if you'll be travelling over the weekend.

Tomorrow, Good Friday, all of the Republic of Ireland's pubs and off-licences will be closed, with most restaurants also banned from selling alcohol.

As it's the only other day aside from Christmas Day when alcohol cannot be sold here, people tend to get pretty panicked.

But – as comedian Frankie Boyle learned when he suggested he might be playing to his first "sober audience" in Dublin tomorrow – there are ways around every law.

Like pillaging the country's off-licences today, Thursday, for example.

One look at Twitter confirms that yep, that's exactly what most people are planning to do.

This lad is taking no chances – he's bringing the whole squad

Even Bishop Brennan is in on the whole thing

And keeping in the religious theme, here's the REAL meaning of H-O-L-Y Thursday

We're loving this poem

Oh, and this one

'PLEASE, GIVE ME ANYTHING YOU HAVE'

It's not just alcohol we'll be saying goodbye to

Tomorrow's motto: Be Prepared

Someone needs to erect a warning sign at Dublin Airport arrivals

Of course, there are some perks to this kinda-sorta Bank Holiday

With Game of Thrones and Star Wars both filming here last year, it seems that Ireland is becoming even more popular when it comes to films and TV shows.

And now The Disney Channel wants a piece of the action. The network is currently filming a new musical TV show in Northern Ireland in hopes it will become as popular as High School Musical.

The show titled The Lodge is set in Montalto Estate in County Down but it's also setting its sights on Castlewellan and Tollymore Forest.

David Levine, director of programming for the Disney Channel in the UK and Ireland said: “Northern Ireland has a great production pool and up until now it has been mostly known for swords and dragons.

“Disney Channel is bringing songs and dancing – we have a great, talented cast who can not only act but sing and dance and we have original songs.”

“We’re investing quite a bit, and you have production, post-production, builders, sets and filming in multiple locations here.”

The Lodge will film in Co Down until this summer, with it set to air on Disney in September.

Jimmy Kimmel has been all about Ireland and St. Patrick's Day on his popular US talkshow Jimmy Kimmel Live this week.

The infamous presenter has spent the past few days trying to figure out how to pull the perfect pint of Guiness.

Earlier in the week, he had the Guiness Brewery Ambassador, Eoghan Clavin, on to help teach him how to achieve that perfected Guiness look.

While Jimmy's own pint went very well, when he tried to have some American fans pull them in an Irish pub on Paddy's Day, it's safe to say that the results were not half as good.

The host tuned in to Rock and Reilly's Irish Bar in West Hollywood for a pint-pulling contest and the finished products were definitely a bit ropey.

Watch the hilarious video below:

St Patrick's Day is something of a global holiday at this stage, and while here in Ireland we're content with a few pints of the black stuff on March 17, other countries feel the need to go all out.

Here are just a few of the Paddy's Day "traditions" that we (thankfully) steer away from on the Emerald Isle.

1. Using Guinness as an ingredient (in anything other than stew)
Guinness in a pint glass – yes. Guinness in stew – yes. Guinness in brownies, cheesecake or cupcakes – no,  no and NO.

2. Dyeing beer green
Are you enjoying that neon green lager? REALLY though, are you?

3. Dyeing rivers green
We're looking at you, Chicago.

4. Dyeing anything green, in fact.
A green loaf of soda bread does not a Paddy's Day lunch make.

5. Greeting people with obscure phrases as Gaeilge
"Go n-éirí an bóthar leat, a Shéamus!"

6. Playing It's A Long Long Way To Tipperary at full blast
Thousands of incredible great songs have come out of Ireland, sadly that's not one of them.

7. Affectionately referring to March 17 as "St Patty's Day"
#paddysnotpattys

8. Saying "Top of the mornin' to ya!," even in jest
"Top of the mornin' to ya, random Irish person! Can you tell us the way to the Guinness Storehouse?"

paris hilton gross ew disgusted grossed out

9. Having t-shirts made bearing your family name
No true Irish person would be seen dead in a t-shirt proclaiming they were one of "The Killarney O'Shaughnessys," and that's just a fact.

As today marks Proclamation Day in Ireland's 1916 Centenary Programme, schools all over the country gathered to express their vision for Ireland's future.

And over on Twitter, Newstalk decided to get adults in on the event too, by asking people what being Irish meant to them.

The results, unsurprisingly, were brilliant.

#BeingIrishMeans…

Unpronouncable first names

Having strange tea-making rituals

Never being able to serve tea to visitors without the obligatory kilo of biscuits

Taking strange pride in our ability to complain

Always saying thanks to the bus driver, unless they've committed a cardinal sin

Never being without someone to talk to

Ah, it's good to be Irish!
