In perhaps the greatest Christmas gift they will ever receive, Irish sportstar Shay Given and his fiancée Becky Gibson have welcomed a baby daughter into the family earlier this month.

The happy couple announced the arrival of their daughter, Grace, on Facebook.

The pair are snapped beaming next to the Christmas tree with little Grace dressed up in a Santa suit.

The happy couple announced their engagement earlier this year.

Becky, who work in PR, looks healthy and happy after giving birth to grace on December 1.

"Nothing compares to the love and energy that can be found spending time with the ones you adore," said the 29-year-old wrote on social media.

Shay has two other children from his previous marriage. The 39-year-old goalkeeper split from his wife of twelve years in 2013.

Another Christmas break, another long line of weather warnings in Ireland.

Met Éireann has released a YELLOW marine weather warning as strong south to south east gales will arrive on all Irish coasts and the Irish Sea which may reach strong gale force between Mizen and Erris head.

Then a second YELLOW wind warning has also been released for Galways, Kerry, Mayo, Donegal, Clare and Cork.

Winds of up to 95km/h are expected this evening, especially along the coast lines.

A Met Éireann spokesman said a new storm is to blame, named Storm Frank, and told the Irish Mirror, "This is from another powerful Atlantic storm out to the West of Ireland which may produce some damaging gusts over Ireland and further flooding."

We don't know about you, but this is our excuse for staying indoors tonight!

The show that we all love – and kinda hate at the same time – is coming back to Ireland. Hurrah!

Yes ladies, Come Dine With Me will be gracing our shores once more and this time they're looking for fruitful and exciting applicants.

The series will be filmed in March, from the 13 – 18 and it wants more people living in and around Dublin, having previously filmed in Limerick and Cork.

The popular series saw Roz Purcell, George McMahon and Brian Kennedy battle it out in 2012, so now it's your turn.

If you fancy taking part (because who doesn't?!), then send an email over to cdwm@shiver.tv with all of your details.

You never know, you could be the next person to win that coveted grand.

If there's one Christmas tradition we need to partake in, it's the annual Official Office Chair Race, held in Kerry.

It not only sounds like MEGA fun, but it's also for a good cause, with donations being made to St Vincent de Paul.

The crew over at the Tralee Chamber Alliance shut down the whole main street – the weekend before Christmas, we might add – to hold the office chair race in which local businessmen and politicians race in their office chairs. #Standard.

Some popular Kerry faces were among the contestants, including TD's Michael Healy Rae and Martin Ferris.

But Cllr Brassil was disqualified from the competition as he cheated and got someone to push his chair ahead of competitors.

You really can't beat the Irish having the craic!

With all the lights and festive flare running rampant in our lovely little capital during the Christmas season, you would think that all of the locals would be in soaking up all the atmosphere of town in December.

When actually, most of us are trying to avoid town like the absolute plague.

1) The crowds

I just want to walk up Henry street, buy a lipstick in MAC and go home.

WHY ARE YOU ALL MAKING THIS SIMPLE TASK SO DIFFICULT.

2) The traffic

It doesn't even matter if you manage to avoid rush hour because in December, you can look forward to traffic ALL the time.

3) The queues

Want to walk around Dublin with a nice hot chocolate and soak in the festive cheer?

Make sure to pencil in the twenty minute queue for said hot chocolate. And also for anything else you may want to purchase

4) The over zealous shoppers

You really learn at Christmas that people are actually RUTHLESS.

Do not go up against an Irish mammy with a load of shopping bags on the street because you will LOSE.

5) The slow walkers

Yes Dublin is beautiful and yes the lights are sparkly but I really just want to be able to walk up this street at a reasonable if not brisk pace. Thanks.

6) The people who cannot use umbrellas

Particularly relevant this year, is the onslaught of umbrellas because we are now forced to do our Christmas shopping in literal STORMS.

Guard your eyeballs with your life people.

7) The drunk people

Don't get us wrong, we LOVE getting drunk at Christmas.

But we don't like those who use the festive season to get so drunk that they literally destroy everything in their path (including the festive spirit).

8) Penneys… in general

All we want in life is to be able to go into Penneys and fill our baskets up with handy stocking fillers.

But the crowds are exhausting and don't even get us started on the queues. And good luck if you want to get a matching festive PJs set in a size ten.

9) Public transport

Public transport at the best of times can be painful, but in December all modes of shepherding people to and from town become literal travelling boxes of sweat.

The Luas gets a particular shout out on this one.

We may just be feeling a bit grumpy after spending the last few weeks Christmas shopping but we do still think Dublin is amazing at Christmas.

(But we personally won't be heading in til the New Year)

It may be as cold as the freezers they store the ice cream in, but that won't stop us!

Jinny Joe's ice cream shop is already a favourite spot in Crumlin, but now they've taken their yummy ice cream to Meath Street in the City Centre.

The shop opened just last week and despite the cold weather, it hasn't stopped people from getting their ice cream fill.

They have everything from Oreo sundaes, Bounty bar sundaes, and even Ferrero Rocher sundaes.

And they're not skimpy either! Just look at all the mouth-watering toppings.

The owner of Jinny Joe's, Paul, told the Daily Edge that his shop differs to the rest due to its adventurous menu.

"We listen to the customers, and make the change. Kids are so creative, we make them what they want, and of course all the tasting is done personally," he said.

He also regarded his menu as an open book, which he makes up everyday on a chalkboard, rather than a set sign.

"Next week for example, we've got an ice cream pizza." Did you hear that?! Ice cream PIZZA.

"It's the usual pizza base, topped with nutella and an ice cream base instead of cheese and tomato sauce. Customers can then pick the topping to go on top."

It's the stuff of dreams, ladies.

Let's be real. Apart from turkey, the taste of Christmas is gingerbread.

The little ginger men and houses make a great treat to munch on every year, and if you're in and around Dublin this season, drop by to one (or all) of these places for the BEST gingerbread experience of your life:

1. The Morrison's Miracle on Strand Street

As part of the Morrison Hotel's Christmas menu, there is a FAB cocktail with bacardi, gingerbread syrup and lime juice. What more could you want?!

2. Gingerbread house from the Natural Bakery

For the best gingerbread houses you've seen (and eaten), the Natural Bakery's are top notch. And there are loads of locations around Dublin and Naas to get one.

3. Gingerbread pot au creme in the Gibson Hotel

Because there's nothing cuter than these yummy treats.

4. Gingerbread hot chocolate from Butlers

Forget Starbucks pumpkin spiced lattes because Butlers gingerbread hot choc's are the way to go.

5. Gingerbread vanilla chocolate fudge brownie shake from Sweet Republic

Just LOOK at it! You can grab one of these from Sweet Republic on Bachelor's Walk.

Once December hits, most of us love getting into the Christmas spirit.

The glistening trees, presents, turkey and decorations are some of the things we all enjoy about the festive season.

But these few people around Ireland have taken their decorations to a whole new level… and we LOVE it:

1. Bath Avenue, Dublin

2. Dalkey

3. Tallaght, Dublin

4. Cork

5. Artane, Dublin

6. Inchicore

It's only been a few weeks since Storm Barney hit us, and then its sister Storm Clodagh rushed onto our shores.

And yesterday, we met Barney and Clodagh's big bro, Desmond.

Storm Desmond hit Ireland with a bang, with many roads closing and planes diverting to Shannon Airport and even Manchester Airport.

But that didn't stop us having the craic with Des though, as many people on Twitter proved that us Irish just can't deal with the windy weather:

1. Like the person with this sound advice:

2. The name is also a major talking point:

3. And we can't even see ourselves on the weather forecast:

4. Desmonds all around Ireland are taking offence too:

5. Saying that, not many people are keen on the name:

6. Not keen at all…:

7. And this tweet certainly speaks for the whole country:

8. But in the end, all we can do is hope it ends soon:

A Gardaí investigation is underway after the kidnapping of a mother and daughter in Dublin early this morning.

The pair were picked up at their home in Artane close to 5am by three armed men. They were held hostage for several hours and driven around while tied up in the back of an 09D VW Caddy van.

It's believed the target of the incident was the father of the family, who works for a cash-in-transit firm. He was forced to arrive to work as normal and then to drive his GSLS security van to an area near Dublin Airport to deliver around €200,000 in cash.

He then locked himself in the van while awaiting the arrival of Gardaí. Thankfully all family members were found safe and well, with the mother and daughter rescued from the van in Dunboyne, Co Meath.

Flights at Dublin Airport were delayed this morning as Gardaí surrounded the van.

Gardaí are appealing for information on a small white box type van parked near the Corballis Road Business Park, Dublin Airport between 7am and 8.30am today.

They are also looking for information on any 'suspicious activity' in the Artane Road area of Dublin or the Dunboyne area of Meath this morning.

Not only is it windy, rainy and generally horrible outside but to add insult to injury, it is also really REALLY cold.

We are all pretty much freezing all the time, but there is always that one person who is constantly colder than everyone else.

You know the ones, they come to the office in twenty five separate layers, hog all the heaters and can withstand the sweatiest nightclubs on the planet without breaking a sweat.

Sound familiar? Here is what it is like to be constantly cold.

1) You have resigned yourself to the fact that no matter what, your fingers will always be freezing.

2) Electric heaters are your everything.

3) You get in trouble at home for turning on the heating ALL the time.

4) You keep an hot water bottle close by at all times.

5) You can't deal when someone suggests you should sit outside.

6) Getting out of the shower is the most dreaded part of each and every day.

7) You have no going out clothes because you spend all your money on coats and knitwear. But your coat game is on POINT.

8) You would probably rather wet yourself than get out of your warm bed at 3am to go to the toilet.

9) You realise that living in this country is life playing a really cruel joke on you.

New York-based Pfizer and Allergan, which has its HQ in Dublin, have today merged – creating the world's biggest drug company.

The deal is said to be worth an astonishing €145bn.

In a statement, the company – which will be called Pfizer PLC – has pledged to continue its “discovery and development of new innovative medicines for patients.” And it added that the merger “brings together two biopharma powerhouses to change lives for the better”.

Head of Pfizer Ian Read will now be chief executive and chairman of the organisation, with Dublin-based Allergan boss Brent Saunders becoming president and chief operating officer.

The move also allows Pfizer to pay a lower rate of corporation tax through its newly-acquired Irish office – potentially saving the company hundreds of millions annually.

The Allergan factory is based in Westport, Co Mayo and employs close-to 1,000 people in Ireland. Principally it manufactures the likes of contact lenses, breast implants, anti-depressants and Alzheimer's drugs – and is also well-known for making the anti-wrinkle treatment, Botox.

Pfizer, which was founded in New York in 1849, is already the manufacturer of Viagra, along with statins, antibiotics and vaccines, and cancer and HIV drugs – some of which the WHO deems "essential" for global healthcare needs.

It already employs around 3,200 people at seven sites in Ireland – making it one of the biggest providers of jobs in the country.
