Batten down the hatches, there's a storm a brewin'.

Hurricane Ophelia is set to pay Ireland a visit next week, after it sweeps across the Atlantic.

The storm is being noted for it's unusual pathway, pushing past Spain and Portugal and coming to land in the UK and Ireland.

It is expected to hit Irish shores sometime on Monday.

Before the tropical storm lands, it is predicted to push a band of warm air towards us first.

This could lead to high temperatures across the weekend.

While Ophelia is currently a dangerous storm, by the time it lands, the high winds should have subsided.

According to Met Éireann:

'Current indications suggest a stormy day for Monday is possible, but uncertainty on the detail remains, due to the nature of the track of the Atlantic storm system.'

'The situation will be monitored throughout the weekend but at the moment it looks like it will be a windy day with further spells of rain.'

The weather has been a bit of a mixed bag as of late, and it looks like that won't be stopping any time soon.

According to Met Éireann, we can expect some temperamental weather over the weekend.

The forecaster predicts a mixture of bright sunny spells and heavy showers over the country.

This is set to include the occasional thundery downpour.

Moving into Saturday, the day should be mostly dry, with a spell of rain on the Atlantic coast.

As we move into Sunday, the weather will get more severe, with heavy rain and scattered showers.

'So at the moment it looks like the worst of the weather will be on Saturday night into Sunday, and we can expect some heavy rain and also some strong winds with some gales along the west coasts,' Met Éireann Meteorologist Matthew Martin told Breaking News.

Known the world over for our love of the gargle, it looks like Ireland's reputation as a nation of hard drinkers may be up for debate after a recent study determined that Ireland has dropped from the heaviest drinking nation to just above average.

17 years ago, Ireland was recognised as the heaviest drinking nation out of the 27 EU countries surveyed, but figures collated from a 2014 European Commission show that Ireland no longer holds the top spot.

Currently, Ireland takes the 12th spot, with the public consuming an average of 10.6 litres of pure alcohol per person.

However, despite the 23.6 per cent drop over the last 14 years, this figure is still 4.6 litres more than the global average.

Commenting on the findings, Eunan McKinney spokesperson for Alcohol Action Ireland, reminded the public that while the drop is, indeed, welcomed, it's important to remember our consumption is still twice the international average.

"We drink twice as much as global norms, and that, mixed with a cultural normalisation that disregards its impact, has fuelled our national crisis with alcohol."

"If Ireland were to follow the low-risk guidelines on alcohol consumption, 11 standard drinks for women and 17 for men, our target would be seven litres," he added.

Leo Varadkar will kick off his three-day visit to Canada with a bilateral meeting before marching alongside Justin Trudeau in today's Montreal Pride parade.

The Taoiseach is then expected to travel to Toronto where he will discuss CETA and trade agreements between Ireland and Canada.

Ahead of the visit, supporters of the Repeal the Eight campaign started a viral hashtag #justinformleo, calling on the Canadian Prime Minister to approach the issue of Ireland's abortion ban, and educate Leo on the progressive Canadian system.

Ailbhe Smyth from the Coalition to Repeal the 8th said: "I would really like to see someone like Leo Varadkar would have an understanding that it is not enough to come out in favour of one aspect of human rights while completely ignoring another."

Leo is also expected to meet with business and tourism leaders and attend a reception with the Irish community in the city.

It has been announced that the Special Army Forces will play a much bigger role in supporting the Gardaí in responding to potential terror attacks.

This means that the Irish soldiers will work alongside the Emergency and Armed Support Units.

They will be the first responders on the scene in the event of an attack in Ireland.

This follows recent efforts by the Gardaí and the Dublin Fire Brigade to extend their training exercises.

Ireland’s minimum wage is set to go up by 30 cent from the start of next year.

As of January 2018, minimum wage will be €9.55 an hour.

It means an extra €12.00 in the pockets of those in full time employment per week.

More than 120,000 workers are set to benefit from the increase.

'While modest, the Low Pay Commission’s recommendation to increase the rate by 30 cent an hour to €9.55 is a welcome but very small step in the right direction,' Labour spokesperson on Worker’s Rights Senator Ged Nash told The Sun.

'Frankly, this government has a lot to be modest about when it comes to delivering on its own promise that work should pay.'

'With a miserly 10 cent increase last year and a modest 30 cent recommended for next year, the Fine Gael-Independent Alliance government is making extremely heavy weather of their pledge to hike the minimum wage rate to €10.50 per hour.'

Getting out of bed this morning was made so much easier by the presence of that big, golden ball in the sky, right?

But if years of Irish weather has taught us anything, it's to take each day – if not each hour – as it comes.

Thankfully, however, the good folk at Met Eireann have assuaged any fears that we'll need a brolly by lunchtime with their latest forecast.

According to those in the know, Ireland will experience unusually warm weather with this week, with temperatures set to reach 27 degrees over the next few days.

And yes ladies, this unlikely figure does indeed put us on par with some of the continent's most popular holiday destinations!

"Today will be warm, dry and sunny with highest temperatures of 20 to 25 degrees, warmest in the midlands and coolest along coasts due to onshore breezes," reads the online forecast.

Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end, and midweek will see a dip in temperature along with the risk of showers.

"There's a risk that a spell of rain on Wednesday will turn heavy. There'll be more rain on Thursday, mostly in the west, it will sweep eastwards and clear overnight on Thursday night."

"Temperatures will be down a little in a moderate to fresh southwest wind. The further outlook towards the end of next week is for a cooler few days to be followed later by higher temperatures once again."

You hear that, high temperatures once again? We'll take what we can get, frankly.

The Taoiseach of Ireland, Leo Varadkar, is the new cover man of Time Magazine.

The European edition of the magazine, which will be published in full on July 24, will see Leo grace the front cover, while inside, he talks about his new position as Taoiseach of our country.

The author of interview, Jennifer Duggan, writes: "Varadkar takes up the post of Taoiseach at a time when the Republic of Ireland has emerged from a deep financial crisis and its economy is turning around.

"But he knows that, especially given external threats such as the neighbouring UK's withdrawal from the European Union, continued progress is not guaranteed.

"He brings a straight-talking style to the office."

The interview took place at the beginning of the month, July 7, and he frankly talks about his sexuality, Brexit and Ireland, and Donald Trump.

This will be an interesting read.

Along with 13 Reasons Why and Big Little Lies; The Handmaid's Tale has fast become one of the most-watched TV series' of this year.

For those of you who haven't seen it yet (where have you been?), it takes place in a dystopian future, where fertile women are held captive to conceive children for sterile women and men.

The Handmaids are forced to live under a fundamentalist dictatorship, and the acts that take place on the show are both shocking and at times, hard to watch.
