Ireland has been enjoying plenty of sunshine and high temperatures over the past week. The public has certainly been making the most of this heatwave with thousands flocking to their local park and beach to soak up the sun.

Unfortunately, a group of beach-goers ruined one of Ireland’s most-loved beaches – Brittas Bay-over the weekend, leaving the local community disgusted.

Brittas Bay Beach Care shared a shocking video of the beach which has been covered in empty beer bottles, cans, plastic bags an, wrappers.

The video has already accumulated over 2,000 views and people are truly horrified by the state the beach was left in.

One user said: “People are disgusting. Bring your rubbish home or to the nearest bin if the bin is full bring it home. This is just shameful.”

“Lazy, dirty people,” another added.

The team had no choice but to organise a Beach Sweep, which will run from 7 pm to 8 pm this evening. They’re seeking the public’s help in tidying up the beach and one generous citizen has already kicked off the cleaning spree.

The Brittas Bay Beach Care team explained: “We just popped down to see how our beach is doing this morning at 9.30am, to find a beach visitor cleaning up the sand at the South Beach entrance. They had seen the news stories about beachgoers littering and wanted to do their bit, so bought some bags down!”

“They said they wanted their children to see this is unacceptable behaviour,” they added.

The team shared a vital message that everyone needs to remember when heading along to the beach during the heatwave: Leave only your footprints.

The Irish Blood Transfusion Service has called on the public to donate blood this summer as these months can be some of the most challenging for the service.

They need at least 15,000 donors per month for the blood supply to remain at a steady level.

The service has specifically asked for people who are O positive, O negative, A positive and B negative to donate.

Operating Director of the IBTS Paul McKinney said: "The summer months are always a challenging time for blood donation – children are on holidays or doing exams, the evenings are long and fine, or there are other distractions such as the World Cup.”

He has asked people to donate before they go on their holidays.

By donating blood you can help people live happier and healthier lives. Thousands of people need blood in Ireland’s hospitals, especially those who are undergoing surgery, recovering from cancer or have been in a serious accident.

Last night, the Domestic Violence Bill passed its final stages in the Dáil, putting in place important measures that will aid victims of psychological abuse.

This move follows a recent report from Women's Aid that they received 10,281 disclosures of emotional abuse during 2017.

In order to help the victims of such abuse, some of this law's key measures include improving courts access for victims and criminalising controlling behaviour. The bill still has to go back to the Seanad before the President can sign it into law.

Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan says that the Domestic Violence Bill is one of the most important pieces of legislation passed by the Oireachtas in 2018.

"The new offence of coercive control sends a clear consistent message that non-violent control in an intimate relationship is criminal," he told BreakingNews.ie.

"The effect of such behaviour may be as harmful to victims as physical abuse because it's an abuse of the unique trust associated with intimate relationships."

Women's Aid Director Margaret Martin commended the passing of the new legislation, and the light it sheds on the fact that abuse goes beyond the physical.

"It's really important that there is move away to understand that domestic violence actually includes so many different forms – whether it's physical, emotional, sexual or financial," she noted.

"An awful lot of people, they may never be physically abused but they may live with the high level of fear and threat and control and I think it's great to see that that's now going to be an offence."

Fianna Fail TD Jim O'Callaghan says that this is also a teaching moment, and more needs to be done to educate young men on how abusing women is unacceptable.

"The only way we are going to be able to resolve the problem and ensure that domestic violence is reduced is through a legislative response – we have that here, but also we need further responses," he observed.

"We need in particular to be able to educate and inform young men of the unacceptability of using violence against women."

We are heartened to hear that the Domestic Violence Bill will help victims of abuse receive the protection and support they need.

Yesterday, fans of Gay Byrne were saddened to learn that the legendary broadcaster is facing a diagnosis of prostate cancer.

Making the candid announcement on his Lyric FM radio show on Sunday afternoon, the former Late Late Show host revealed that he will be absent from the programme next week because he is expected in hospital to undergo a series of tests.

Last night, the 82-year-old offered The Irish Sun a glimpse at how he intends to cope with his health concerns when he told the paper he has no option but to maintain a positive outlook.

“You don’t have any choice but to have a positive outlook,” said Gaybo.  “You have to have the best outlook possible.”

“You have to remember there are a huge collection of fellas who have survived prostate cancer.  They all survived and are doing well and why couldn’t that apply to me?”

Discussing his decision to make the news public, the father of two said he wanted stop the production of rumours.

“I just made the announcement because I wouldn’t be doing the show next week and to stop the rumours starting that I was dead or gone.”

He explained that doctors think he has “a little cancer of the prostate” but admitted that they won’t know for sure until the end of next week.

It is an unfortunate regular occurrence that we decide to take the M50 to our mates gaff and then completely forget to pay the bloomin' toll by 8pm the next day.

When those white envelopes arrive in our postbox, we are filled with a knowing sense of fear.

But we ALWAYS pay our fine.

Well, one cheeky motorist has purposefully tried to evade paying the dreaded toll but he should have known that there is simply no messing with eFlow.

And it seems that most of us have accepted this fact as the compliance rate for paying the charge is at 96.7%.

Despite this, that still leaves a massive €1.5 million worth of tolls unpaid every year.

The motorist in question managed to rack up a €25,000 fine as the State has been forced to take serious action against those refusing to cough up the toll fare.

The high fine rate given to one motorist was the result of five separate convictions in which the judge applied a €5,000 euro charge on each case as the recipient had failed to turn up in court.

And according to eFlow, there are a number of "hardcore offenders" who have each racked up over a hundred unpaid tolls. There has also been 46 vehicle seizures.

These people have clearly not figured the automatic debiting system online because it's the greatest thing EVER.

Pay your toll people.
