Love Island is back on our screens for the next eight weeks, but there are more than a few issues which need to be addressed.

We're talking racism, we're talking homophobia, we're talking ablism, we're talking sexism, we're talking class, we're talking body diversity…the whole can of worms.

Each of these topics deserve to be tackled individually, no doubt. Bear in mind during this article that, as a Caucasian woman, I cannot speak for the experiences of other ethnicities and it's incredibly important to listen to their personal stories rather than another white woman's take on their livelihoods.

In this article, it's time to talk about the racial bias in the infamous reality television show, which sees Islanders couple up in the hopes of winning the £50,000 cash prize. Does everyone have a fair chance, though?

One tweet in particular did the rounds last night and is currently on 37,000 likes and 5.7 thousand reweets for the point it made about former contestants-of-colour.

From Malin and Marcel in series two and three, to Samira in the fourth season, and now Yewande in the latest episode: People-of-colour are always chosen last for the coupling.

These statistics are troubling when we hear how much racial abuse has been sent to Yewande Biala, the Irish candidate who works in cancer research as a scientist. 

Members of the public are literally questioning her nationality despite the fact she has an Irish accent and refers to herself as Irish, and trolls persistently send abuse her way online.

Former Love Island contestant Samira Mighty has now expressed her fear that Yewande will experience the same micro-aggressions and racism as what she was subjected to last season.

She ultimately failed to find love on the show, with the male contestants evidently not finding her attractive. She left the show after a failed coupling with Frankie Foster, but is now speaking out.

"I feel like there has been so many comparisons between the two of us," she told Metro.co.uk. "The only thing that is similar – it’s not even the colour of our skin – it’s that she is a shade of brown.

"I was trending on Twitter when the line-up came out because of the comparisons. I’m different from her. I’m a theatrical person and she’s a scientist. I think our personalities are different. You can even see it in the first introduction video."

23-year-old Yewande is of Nigerian descent, and has faced criticism online for her choice of men and even her preference for wearing a wig instead of a weave. The standards aren't the same for Caucasian contestants.

Samira also expressed frustration about the pressure for people-of-colour in the villa to choose each other as a couple, such as Sherif and Yewande:

"If Sherif does pick her, people are going to say “Oh okay, there is a black couple” and then it’s going to be cliche. It’s just weird. Everyone chill out. It’s now 2019, we should be able to do whatever we want."

Another ex-Islander, Marcel Somerville, has bemoaned the racial bias in the show after the contestants coupled up, and Yewande was picked last.

"Love Island flashbacks," he tweeted. "Black guy, black girl and mixed race guy all left unpicked. Mad!!!" the former Blazin' Squad member wrote,

None of the female contestants stepped forward to indicate their attraction to him back in 2017 while he was in the competition.

This year, newbies Yewande Biala, Sherif Lanre and Michael Griffiths were all sidelined during the first episode, with Scottish contestant Anton Danyluk causing trouble already.

Before the start of this year's series, fans of the show asked ITV to remove Danyluk after an image of him wearing blackface makeup was discovered from six years ago.

Somerville explained the deeply offensive nature of blackface on his Instagram story, explaining that it "invokes a racist and painful history". Blackface only conceals racism, and yet ITV allowed him to stay on the show.

Last year, Samira was the first woman-of-colour to take part in the show's history, and only one man out of sixteen in the villa were interested in her. A gorgeous West End performer, who boys aren't attracted to? What?

In Samira's time in the villa, Megan Barton-Hanson (the blonde and slim contestant) was referred to as “everyone's type on paper”. It seems that Lucie Donlon, the blonde, slim surfer model, is this year's Megan.

Anton and Joe are already vying to win the heart of the 21-year-old, with Anton seeking to ditch Amy (another slim, blonde contestant) who he's been paired up with presumably very soon.

Is it just micro-aggressions, or are narrow-minded Eurocentric ideas of beauty unavoidable in this show?

From a huge lack of body diversity as well as racial, the reality show is catering for a miniscule amount of the population when it comes to representation.

It's easy to dismiss it as just car-crash tv, but millions of people watch Love Island, and seeing the same type of beauty ideal over and over again is disturbingly damaging.

Jameela Jamil opened up on Twitter about her sadness and anger at the lack of body types represented by the show, whose bosses claim it's because they want the contestants to be "attracted to one another."

Jamil and the show's host, Caroline Flack, disagreed on their stances about diversity, with news websites painting Jamil as angry and irrational.

In reality, she was just trying to express concern for under-represented body types, ethnicities, gender and abilities.

The show is undoubtedly telling us that only slim, toned, blonde, white, big-breasted women are beautiful enough to catch a man, and only tall, white men with bronzed abs are good enough to be deemed attractive for women.

Stereotypes and tropes surrounding people-of-colour are undoubtedly present, such as Jamil's experience of being the 'angry brown woman'. 

However, it's women-of-colour that appear to be experiencing the most difficulties.

Valerie Ross of Scientific American wrote about the non-verbal behaviour towards reality tv stars of different races affecting the viewers' prejudice, and her data is overwhelming.

On-screen body language towards people-of-colour can increase unconscious prejudice in viewers, according to Tufts University research.

Esteemed journalist and researcher Cheryl Thompson has also written about the portrayal of black women on reality tv, pointing out three key tropes; the 'Mammy', the 'Jezebel' and the 'Sapphire'.

Three racial stereotypes of black womanhood which came to light at various historical moments in Western media culture. 

The 'Mammy' has links with servitude and the trademark subservient, mothering figure. The 'Jezebel', born out of chattel slavery, was seen as a sexually depraved, immoral and lascivious black woman. The 'Sapphire' was born on television; angry, emasculating and loud black women. Recognise the signs?

Lack of representation on television can be seen outside of the reality genre, but the experiences of Love Islanders-of-colour speaks for itself. Everything is trying to tell them that they don't fit the ideal of beauty, just like the lack of ethnicity on runways, ad campaigns and film.

Serena Williams could never get the amount of sponsorships in fashion as her blonde, slim tennis players, who weren't even close to her talent. Naomi Campbell and Tyra Banks revolutionised modelling for black women, but experienced immense difficulties in the process. Black women still rarely get cast in lead roles in film, theatre and television.

What does this tell you about who the public want to see on their screens? Not to mention the lack of care they give towards the mental health of Islanders. The damage which a lack of body diversity and ethnicities does to viewers is undeniable, if you don't see yourself then you assume you aren't enough. You would feel invisible.

One argument I have heard for the lack of diversity is that 'token' candidates such as a plus-sized Islander or woman-of-colour, face a barrage of abuse online as they are clearly the lone representatives.

It's important to take their mental health into account, can they handle this level of online racial or body-orientated abuse? The fact that they have to choose between being represented but abused as a result or not seeing themselves on a screen at all is depressing and unfair.

Yet the less the public see of other races, genders, classes, body types and abilities, the more they will misunderstand them and hold high levels of ignorance. Ignorance leads to consequences.

ITV bosses are about to get some SERIOUS hate mail after the latest comments on body diversity. Brace yourselves for this one, people, it's an absolute corker.

Richard Cowles, creative director of ITV Studios Entertainment, are claiming that the reason Love Island is lacking body diversity is because they want the contestants "to be attracted to one another".

The 2019 islanders for season five were unveiled last Monday, and fans of the show quickly took to Twitter to vent their frustrations.

The contestants are typically toned, slim and bronzed with gleaming white teeth; zero change from the last four seasons. Former stars of the show also expressed concerns at the lack of physical representation.

“I think we try to be as representative and diverse as possible,” Cowles sais​​​​​​d “It has to come back first and foremost- it's an entertainment show and it's about people wanting to watch people we've got on screen and then reacting and falling in love with one another.

“Yes we want to be as representative as possible but we also we want them to be attracted to one another.” *Sharpens knife*

The  Love Island boss continued to dig a bigger hole by saying the show isn’t encouraging people to aspire to a certain body image, it just chooses participants based on who they think the public want to watch for eight weeks.

So basically, only this one narrow body type can appear on television, because the public refuse to watch any other varieties of physiques. Wow. 

“We're saying here's a group of people that we want to watch for eight weeks, and we want to watch them fall in love,” Cowles added. “That's not at the front of our mind, but we do want to be as diverse as possible.”

Former islanders Alexandra Cane and Malin Andersson both spoke out about their disappointment over the 2019 line-up.  

Cane tweeted: “Where the curvy girls at?” while Love Island 2016 star Andersson, wrote: “And I thought they would have some diversity. Meh.”

A spokesperson from ITV2 later said:

“When casting for Love Island, we always strive to reflect the age, experiences and diversity of our audience and this year is no exception with a cross section of different personalities and backgrounds in the villa." Maybe strive a tad harder, eh?

The reality show has also received complaints about the lack of care for the mental health of contestants, following the suicides of Mike Thalassitis and Sophie Gradon.

While the series came under scrutiny for reasons of mental health and compassion on social media, it seems the public are still commenting on the bodies of those involved in the new season 

The show has since introduced aftercare processes in a string of changes.

Some fans are even calling for the show to be removed from the air entirely, especially after The Jeremy Kyle Show drama.

One thing is for sure, they need to do better. Full stop.

We genuinely thought that reality television stars in this day and age earned their fare share of cash, otherwise why are they so hell-bent on staying relevant?

Apparently not this year. According to The Daily Star, the stars of 2019's Love Island will be paid just £250 a week this summer. That's not even minimum wage, so it's fairly surprising.

Thousands of young men and women have applied to appear on the ITV2 show this year, despite the recent suicides of ex-contestants Mike Thalassitis and Sophie Gradon.

The winners of the cash prize receive £50,000… which is quite the step up from their weekly wages. Dani Dyer and Jack Fincham won the competition last year, and earned plenty more through sponsorships and appearances,

However, some past contestants claim the show fails to properly prepare the participants for the difficulties of appearing in public and on social media.

The Daily Star have affirmed that the ITV bosses are paying the islanders just £250 a week to  “compensate” for giving up time to be on the show. If they last the entire eight weeks, they bag £2,000, which isn't much.

The majority of contestants only last a couple of days, and get just £250 as a result. One source said: “Everyone now knows that stepping into that villa brings good and bad things.

2017 contestant Zara Holland has even called for the show to be taken off the air. 

Strictly Come Dancing's AJ Pritchard's brother, Curtis, has just been announced for the 2019 line-up. The 23-year-old is already a fan favourite, so time will tell whether he becomes one of the 'originals'.

Love Island has faced numerous complaints from body confidence advocates, who point out the show's lack of diversity when it comes to body shapes and sizes.

The smash hit ITV2 reality show has been under pressure over the course of four seasons to include a wider range of body types, and it seems the bosses have finally taken some action.

The 30-year-old health campaigner already has achievements under her belt, as the first plus-size model to walk at London Fashion Week. 

She's set to join Tyson Fury's baby bro Tommy in the Spanish villa when the show kicks off on June 3. An inside source spoke to The Sun about the diversity issues which the show has promoted:

"Previous years have been criticised for a lack of diversity among contestants. This year producers are determined to have more variation among the Islanders."

The stunning size 16 model encourages people to adore their bodies on her podcast, dismissing the idea that a career should be based around your weight.

"This is my natural weight and I’ve been able to make a career from it. If I was to stop liking cake and lost weight then I would probably lose clients because when you get down to a size 14/12 it can be harder to get jobs."

Love Island features contestants with identical, gym-obsessed physiques, which can often lead to controversy given their audience of young women and girls.

The casting announcement has arrived just after an insider revealed that the show will see more variety in terms of the islanders' bodies.

"With everything that’s happened, bosses know that the show will be under intense scrutiny this year so they’ve gone back to see what it is the viewers want, and if there’s anything they can do to make it better."

They continued: "One thing that keeps coming up is the lack of body shape diversity. Viewers want to see girls and boys with bodies they can relate to. The ITV2 series is also bringing in new measures to protect the mental health of contestants after they leave the villa. This was seemingly as a result of the suicides of two former Love Island stars; Mike Thallasitis and Sophie Gradon. 

Other names on the love list for this years' show include; Rochelle Humes' sister Soph Piper, AJ Pritchard's brother Curtis, Big Brother star Lotan Carter, Ted Pullin, Sav Berry, and American model Delilah Belle Hamlin.

Love Island kicks off Monday 3 June on ITV2, we're excited to see the positive vibes that Jada can bring to the show.

Reality television star Jess Shears has just confirmed that she's expecting her first baby with former Love Island co-star and husband Dom Lever.

The couple appeared on the popular ITV show in 2017, and have just shared a lovely image of their sonogram alongside a snap of Jess' growing baby bump.

Dom shared the image to his Instagram, captioning the snap, "Living the dream." His 25-year-old wife posted an identical image, writing, "The best is yet to come"

This will be the first baby for the couple, who got engaged just three months after the series ended after getting off to a bumpy beginning.

The pair got married in Greece last October in a small ceremony attended by only 22 guests.

The couple are also infamous for their staged wedding on Good Morning Britain back in February of 2018, but the live TV nuptials weren't legally binding.

Eight months later, they tied the knot officially and now there's a brand new family member on the way. We wish the newlyweds a warm congrats on the pregnancy, and can't wait for more baby bump photos.

The Jeremy Kyle Show has been permanently cancelled by ITV after the death of a guest.

Steve Dymond was found dead on May 9 after taking part in the programme a week earlier.

Carolyn McCall, CEO of ITV stated: “Given the gravity of recent events we have decided to end production of The Jeremy Kyle Show.

“The Jeremy Kyle Show has had a loyal audience and has been made by a dedicated production team for 14 years, but now is the right time for the show to end.

“Everyone at ITV's thoughts and sympathies are with the family and friends of Steve Dymond.”

Love Island bosses have apparently decided to not pay an on-air tribute to reality star Mike Thalassitis at the beginning of season five.

The former contestant, who took part on the 2017 series alongside Chris Hughes, Kem Cetinay and Olivia Attwood, was found dead in the woods near North London in March.

The Love Island producers have decided to honour Mike in a tribute on ITV’s on-demand service, which plays the 2017 series and will soon be available as a box-set.

An insider told The Sun: "It felt more appropriate to do it there." It was recently claimed that contestants will have to pass STI tests and mental health screenings to gain acceptance to the new series following Mike's death.

“Bosses want stars to be safe mentally and physically. Their biggest nightmare would be someone contracting an STI, so potential contestants must have several rounds of medical tests," the source continued.

The hugely popular TV dating show returns the first weekend of June with a brand new crop of hopefuls seeking love and fame.

The suicide of 2016 contestant Sophie Gradon last year has led to a major shake-up for the 2019 series, with safeguards to look after contestants being introduced.

The creative director of ITV Studios wrote in a statement on the new initiatives: “When something so awful happens we naturally enter a period of soul searching and ask whether anything could have been done."

“This review has led us to extend our support processes to offer therapy to all Islanders and not only those that reach out to us," he continued. Social media, mental health and reality tv appear to go hand-in-hand.

Richard Cowles insisted Mike's death had nothing to do with the show, but improvements had to be made: "The key focus will be for us to no longer be reliant on the Islanders asking us for support but for us to proactively check in with them on a regular basis.”

Dame Carolyn McCall,  ITV’s chief executive, insisted it would be ‘extremely tenuous’ to link the show to his passing; "I don’t think anybody has made a direct link between what happened to Mike and ‘Love Island’ and that is very important to say."

The countdown to Love Island 2019 has been ticking over for months now, and we're damn tired of waiting. We want sun, pretty people to watch/judge and hilarious memes and we want it now.

Thank the Gods, the start date has finally been 'revealed' ahead of the show's fifth series.

Fans of the hugely popular ITV show are eagerly anticipating the return ever since Dani and Jack took home the trophy last year. Rumour has it we'll be seeing a host of new singletons on Monday, June 3.

The Love Island UK Twitter account spilled the saucy secret, after presenter Caroline Flack revealed earlier in the month that she had begun filming for the ITV show and would soon be meeting the new stars.

"What’s really exciting about this week is that we start filming for Love Island 2019," she divulged to her followers on Instagram.

"And by the end of the week I’m going to have potentially seen the cast for this year, which is really exciting and mad that it’s come around this quick." 

She continued, "So I’ll let you know what happens, it’s going to be a long, hot summer and all that." There's only about three weeks to go until the show prep begins.

During a workout, she added, "I’ve just trained with Bradley Simmons, he put me through utter hell. Making me do weights I should not be lifting, but he says we’ve only got three weeks before Love Island starts, so we’ve got to work hard."

We'll have to work hard to wait another 26 days for the next season's debut. Fingers crossed the producers reveal who the cast are soon enough, we're DYING to see them.

It seems like Kaz Crossley has officially moved on from her Love Island romance with Josh Denzel, with ANOTHER former Love Island-er; Theo Campbell.

They seem to stick to their pack, this lot. Kaz pretty much confirmed the rumours swirling about her romance with Campbell on a PDA-filled night out.

Theo appeared on the ITV show back in 2017, and seemed smitten with Crossley. He even put her on his Instagram Story (GASP).

“They’re seeing how things go and taking it day by day. They’re having fun and getting to know each other," the source continued.

“It’s not exclusive but they like each other’s company. However, with so many commitments like sponsorship deals and TV shows, they don’t have a lot of time together. So for the time being, they’re having a bit of fun.” Good for them.

The pair met while filming a reality show in Thailand in March, and all those Insta snaps send the rumour mill flying.

The first photos from series two of Liar have just been released and we’re even more excited about the show’s return.

The TV series that gripped the nation in 2017 is finally making it’s long-awaited return to the screen.

The psychological thriller is set to air later this year with both Joanne Froggatt and Ioan Gruffudd returning.

Coronation Street actress Katherine Kelly will join the cast as DI Karen Renton.

We were completely wrapped up in the drama of Liar and have been itching to know what will happen next, especially after that final shot of Andrew Earlham’s body lying in the cold, dreary marshes.

The writers of the show commented on the second series and you’re going to love what they have to say.

Harry and Jack Williams spoke to TV Times about the return of the thrilling series. They explained that series two will be set before Earlham’s death.

“There are certainly a few suspects and we hope to explore that further. Andrew has been missing for several weeks and then we see his dead body in the empty marshlands. The question is: what happened in those missing weeks that led to Andrew’s demise?” they commented.

"Joanne Froggatt and Ioan Gruffudd are back. We’re delighted that anyone frustrated by the cliffhanger will be rewarded for their patience. Questions are answered and the title is central."

Harry commented: "It’s a different lie. Who’s lying about what? The audience will be figuring that out."

In the wake of the tragic passings of former Love Island stars Mike Thalassitis and Sophie Gradon, the ITV show have considered their aftercare that they offer the contestants.

Mike, who took part in the 2017 series of the show, was found in a North London park last week, with police confirming he died by suicide aged 26. 

Sophie was a contestant in the villa in 2016 and her body was found at her parents home, in June 2018 – she was 32-years-old. 

Tributes poured in for the pairs the times of their deaths, with former co-stars calling for a stronger support system to be put in place for when the emerge back into the real world after a summer on the show. 

The show’s producer Richard Cowles wrote to The Metro that, ''When something so awful happens we naturally enter a period of soul searching and ask whether anything could have been done.''

Richard went on to outline the system in place – there's three key stages; pre-filming, filming, and aftercare.

He wrote, ''We work with both an independent GP and a psychological consultant to provide an assessment of the physical and mental health of each of the shortlisted cast members and their suitability for inclusion on the programme. The medical team also contacts each Islander’s GP to check they feel that person is able to take part. We ask for full disclosure from potential cast members to these health professionals so that so that we can support them appropriately.''

He continued, ''Care continues whilst the Islanders are in the villa. We have a medical team on location which includes a psychological consultant. They not only look after Islanders’ healthcare needs, but also monitor them to check that there are no emerging signs of any problems developing whilst they are in the villa.''

However in light of Mike's passing, changed are being put into place.

Richard wrote, ''This review has led us to extend our support processes to offer therapy to all Islanders and not only those that reach out to us. And we will be delivering bespoke training to all future Islanders to include social media and financial management.''

He added, ''The key focus will be for us to no longer be reliant on the islanders asking us for support but for us to proactively check in with them on a regular basis.''

Fellow Love Island stars Jess Shears and Dom Lever are among the stars who have hit out at the ITV show for it's lack of care.

Jess posted on social media that, ''Shows offer you “support” but realistically it’s only while you are in their care. Minute you get home & are no longer making them money it’s out of sight out of mind. There should be ongoing support & also financial advice. Life after these shows isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.'' 

We hope that with these revisions in place, that future tragedies can be avoided.

Love Island bosses and producers are allegedly eyeing up reality stars for their 2019 season, and have their eyes set on one very famous lady's beau.

Seeing as literally EVERY couple from the 2018 series except winners Jack Fincham and Dani Dyer have split up, so we need some tasty new drama to follow.

Despite the fact that the show won't return for another three months, it's been reported that ITV producers want former The Only Way is Marbs star Ercan Ramadan to star in the show.

Vicky Pattison's boyfriend has received the call; with producers said to have broken their ban on "z-list reality stars", whatever that means…

The insider said: "Love Island casting agents are approaching people with low-level fame to take part in this year’s show. Ercan was approached by casting producers in January."

Continuing, they said; "They told him he'd be a perfect fit for the show and that they really wanted him on board. He knows it would be good for his career but he's with Vicky now, so he's not sure how to play it."

Another Love Island insider said Ercan was NOT approached by the show's producers, but may have been asked to audition by a casting team. Alright then…mixed messages much?

What would happen to his relationship with Vicky if he accepted their offer? We have many, many questions.
